Chapter 17
“You need to understand that the Blacks were more rigid on areas of behavior than most of the other Pureblood families,” Augusta started as she sorted through the mass of old parchments relating to marriages between families from decades before. Voice not booming like it normally was, she added, “That had to do with the intermarriages and some problems that came from that. The last few generations were worse about it as serious mental issues came into play. In fact, they were downright controlling and would, indeed, invoke those clauses at the drop of a hat. Anything that looked like you were betraying the House of Black and they pulled that out with no warning. From what I can remember, they did it to plenty. Andromeda and Sirius were booted out before they got involved in the marriage bit, so they never had to deal with it. It's my understanding that Andromeda was left pretty much penniless by her side of the family, though she got an inheritance from one of the other relatives that were also booted that wanted nothing to do with the rest. Sirius—that's obvious. He was the last of the males and I doubt Wallburga wanted the family name to die out. Despite her hatred of her son, she wouldn't let that happen. And I'm sure that Sirius knows all about that codswallop, having had it drilled into his skull from an early age like most of the men.”
Pleased with what he was hearing, Albus nodded as he helped sort through the books and papers on the table. “I think we can use this to help.”“Probably,” Augusta agreed with a nod. “It can only give you a hand. Even if Sirius just takes the first step in yanking that permission, he can force a change that can only help the rest of us.” Stopping, she looked around the table then added, tone hushed, “I think he can completely take over Narcissa, Draco and Bella's vaults. And part of their husband's if it's proven that the dowries they were given went into those or it was used to invest. We just have to find something here to give us a hint as to what he can do.”“Let me ask this,” Severus started, leaning forward, elbows resting on the table. When the intimidating woman looked at him, nodding, he pressed on, “Why wouldn't Narcissa say something to Draco? She made it clear he didn't know.”“Probably plenty of reasons,” Augusta snorted. “Sirius was a hellion. No one here would claim otherwise. And he didn't buy into all this nonsense. Though he was a cad, he was softhearted and did what was right, rather than follow this tripe. I'm sure Narcissa didn't think he would take that step because of how it would affect her son. Sirius wasn't the sort to do that. He would come at you, wand ready, but not resort this kind of foolishness. Then there was what went on. I mean, she was in no danger because of his wanted status. After all, that would have put him in danger. Then came that trip through the Veil. He was dead. Once that happened, that left her and Bella as heads of the House of Black. Probably Bella because she was older, even if she was an escaped convict. Narcissa probably thought she was in the clear until Sirius came back through that Veil, so there was no need. Then Draco started with the nonsense. It was probably then that she realized how precarious the position she found herself in was. And I'll bet my wand part of it was to protect him from knowing how bad her family was when it came to so much. Plenty do that. The Longbottoms as well. All that went by the wayside a couple of generations ago when it comes to us when one of the 'black sheep' took over and did away with it after the 'normal side' pretty much died out.”Stopping, the older woman looked at the people gathered there then told them, “You need to realize there is plenty of speculation about what's going on there. Among many. The story is juicy enough that it's running rampant all over. There have been bits in the paper about it, talking about possible issues and scientific evidence of those that have returned, but most is just outlandish tales of what's going on with the three of them that come from no known source. Narcissa has to have heard them as well, then began to panic slightly, wondering. After all, she knew Sirius growing up, so she knows what he's like. With what Draco's spouting, threatening, whatever, even if it's just chin-wagging like he's known for, she has to know that it'll get back to Sirius. If even a quarter of what everyone's hearing is true, she knows she had to shut him up as it's likely to set Sirius off. If Sirius does go off, Narcissa has huge problems. Nullifying that marriage contract might be the least of them, depending on what's written in it. She can lose everything she inherited from her family. My sources tell me that's a lot to lose.”“Anything that is considered communal property acquired during the marriage is forfeited as well because the contract was voided. She would only get minimal support from Lucius because Draco would be considered illegitimate. And Lucius would lose almost everything with it going into a trust until a legitimate Malfoy heir was born. At this stage? The House of Malfoy would probably be gone as well as I don't see Lucius being able to produce a real heir before he dies. Like the House of Black, the House of Malfoy has intermarried so much that they are only producing the one heir, something we all know signals problems with the genes.”Taking that in, Severus gave a slow nod. Smirking slightly, he said, “I don't think, even if his parents do talk to him, Draco's going to knock it off. He's so used to getting his own way, doing what he wants without suffering consequences, or having his father bail him out, that I doubt this sinks in. Either that or he’ll think Black won't do it.”“That may be,” Arthur admitted after tossing aside another parchment that was no help. “It's just—none of us know if Sirius would take this step. At the moment, it's doubtful he can with all that's going on there and what they are dealing with.”“Let it go on,” Molly huffed, crossing her arms over her chest. “Let him keep going and for it to get worse. He doesn't know what he's pushing. Sirius isn't in good shape, from all we've heard, and if Draco continues, it might push him there. That can only help. Even him taking the first steps and scaring Lucius and Narcissa half out of their wits by doing that can give us the advantage we need.”“That I do tend to agree with,” Albus nodded. “Let's see if we can find out just what he can do then, maybe, we can see what Sirius is willing to take on. If he's able, that is. I can have Arthur give him all the information we have and a rundown of what we want to accomplish from it, then see what he says. We just need to make sure that we have everything we can get to see what he can manage before we take that step. Remus may be up to researching, but I doubt if Sirius is. And if it involves them leaving the house, none of them will manage it.” Shaking his head, he added, “As it is, they have enough huge problems on their plates that this won't be something they could take on at the moment.”“Which means we come up with all we can before we get it to them,” Minerva said with a firm nod. “Let's see what we can find. All of us have various contacts we can use to see if we can ferret out a copy of that contract. I do know they are generally sealed somewhere, but we might want to see if we can find it. Some influence, what with all that's going on, might go a long way and we may be able to get our hands on it.”“I'll try that as well,” Albus told her with a nod. “Let me see what I can do or who I can contact that might be able to manage it. Give me some time.” Distractedly, he said, tossing more parchments that were of no help aside, “We might want to see what Rufus can do for us. He is serious about ending this. If it's something we think we can use, he might manage where we can't. Let me see what feelers I can put out.”Glancing through another mind-numbing, jargon filled contract from the distant past, Severus shook his head and tossed it aside. However, for the first time in a long time, he had some hope that if they found something big enough that they might start swinging this war in the direction they needed it to go so it could all end. At least it might give them a foot in the door. That they desperately needed at the moment.
Looking between his parents, Draco shook his head, “He can't do that.”“Yes, he can, Draco,” Narcissa told him softly. “It's written into our marriage contract he could do that. You are—what you're saying, even if you don't mean it, is taking after the bondmate of the head of the House of Black. In doing that, he can invoke what's in that contract. We just explained to you what could come of that if he does.”“He wouldn't,” Draco told her mulishly, crossing his arms over his chest, looking at his father and waiting.Groaning, Lucius said, “We don't know if he would or not. Sirius didn't care about such matters in the past. All of us would tell you that. At the moment, though, we aren't sure what shape he's in. The mere fact that they are holed up alone, not going out, tells us there are major issues there. What they are, we don't know. In fact, we only have hints from some of what Severus told your mother. Couple in how protective he is of Potter, and he might. Especially if there are problems readjusting from the year on the other side of the Veil.”“The Dark Lord wouldn't let him. Neither would the both of you,” Draco said, looking between the two.“If he decided to invoke those clauses, nothing can stop him,” Narcissa told him, shaking her head. “It's within his rights as head of the House of Black. If he starts down that road, we have no way to fight it. We could negotiate with him, but it comes down to him being able to do what he wants because of how that contract is written.”“Why in Merlin's name did someone write that into a marriage contract?” Draco asked, voice rising in pitch, trembling from anger. “And why did you sign it?”“Something similar is written into all Pureblood marriage contracts, Draco,” Lucius told him after a sip of brandy. Shaking his head, he said, “Including from the Malfoy end. Mine was just different because there are no others left, so, once father died, it was a moot point. As for not signing? There was no choice. You signed it or there was no marriage. It was that simple.”“Were you going to force this on me too?” Draco asked, voice a low snarl. He couldn't believe this or what it could mean! In fact, he hadn't heard of it before. No one, anywhere, had mentioned anything about it.“No,” Lucius told him, voice having a hard bent to it. “That ended with me. I wouldn't force that on you. We just can't do anything about the past. There's also the fact that we didn't think this would end up an issue after Wallburga and my father died.”“All of this because of Potter!” Draco snarled, grinding his teeth.“Leave it, Draco,” Lucius told him, tone cold and hard. “You need to drop that line, now. And you need to stop what you’ve been spouting. It's best we not poke that faction of this mess. Let what's coming play out. You stay out of it. Say nothing more. Definitely don't spout any of that to anyone that might pass it back to Potter or Black. Doing that can result in dragging all of us into a nightmare I have no way of countering.”“I cannot believe this!” Draco huffed, shaking his head. He didn't say more than that aloud, though. No, he wouldn't let his parents hear it. What he did plan was to make Potter pay for this latest round of humiliation. It was all his fault and he would get revenge.
Sprawled out on the settee is his mother's old room, Sirius was holding Harry to his chest. Like normal anymore, he was tired, though it was midday and he had slept well the night before. It was just readjusting and the stress that came from it. The upside, though, was it was getting better. He wasn't nearly as tired as he had been. Which meant that it was improving when it came to many areas. That's what they needed.
Holding Harry close, he stroked up and down his stomach under his shirt. He knew that the more they touched and had close contact with Harry, the more it would help all of them. With everything that Harry was dealing with at this time, he really needed that. He also knew that Harry was stressed to a certain extent because of what he was dealing with. The other side of that, though, was in order to keep him moving down the path they were on, he needed to push this. Because the truth was that he and Remus couldn't take much more of the submissive Harry. It was getting better, no doubt there, a lot better than it had been, but they still had work to do. That meant pushing it. And only he could really do that. That's what he was working on.Little Paws had been a tremendous help in what they were working with. As his dog, Harry could do plenty more than normal. Which was the start on the path they needed. Now they had to translate that into not using Little Paws. He was doing good with that as well, though he wasn't up to what he was with Little Paws. In fact, if asked to do some of it as 'Harry', he ended up plenty stressed, though not throwing him into the anxiety attack it had that first time after Dumbledore was over. He did know that the more they pushed it, the less Harry would end up stressed. It was just hard to deal with while it was going on, nothing more.Glancing down at Harry, Sirius pulled him closer, kissing him on the temple. Making decisions and choices the other day had been great and what they needed. Now he was trying to push that further. The more he managed that, the faster this would end and they could get back on the right track. At this point, he was making it more complicated to make those choices by giving Harry multiple ones to choose from. That was stressing him out, no doubt there, but it was working. It was getting easier on Harry to do that. And that was what they needed.“So, what do you want to do, Harry? Take a nap, go out and fly, find a game we can all play or is there something else you want to do?” Stopping, he waited. These weren't the simplistic choices they had been giving Harry, so it would take more out of him than the others had done. He just hoped it wouldn't overly stress him.Stiffening up, starting to shake slightly, Harry let out a ragged sigh, eyes sliding shut. Once more, the bond and spells began to war with each other, pulling him in two different directions that made him feel like he was going completely mental. It wasn't as bad as it had been, of course, but it was still there and not something he liked nor was it easy to deal with. Clenching his fists as he tried to work with what Sirius asked of him, Harry opened his mouth to impart what he really wanted, but closed it again as he couldn't seem to manage. Then he opened it again, stammering softly.Figuring Harry just needed some gentle reassurance, Sirius gave him a squeeze then said, tone gentle, “Whatever you want. I want to hear what it is you want to do. You can say whatever you want and voice your opinion. That's what we want from you; our Harry that has free will to say and do what he wants.”Nodding to let Sirius know he heard, Harry stammered slightly then said, tone very uneven and soft, “I just want to curl up in bed with both of you.” Once it was out, he felt much better, like a weight was lifted off him. Sagging against Sirius, he panted heavily, though he was grinning slightly. It was getting easier to do it, that's for sure!“We can do that,” Sirius nodded, grinning himself. That wasn't something he thought Harry would want to do, but it was something all three of them would like. Sitting up, pulling Harry with him, he said, “Let's go into our room. The bed is more comfortable.” Nudging Harry, he waited for him to stand. When he did, Sirius noticed, as usual, he was looking down at the floor. That was another bit that he needed to work on. Standing with a groan, Sirius slipped an arm around Harry, holding him close. Kissing him on the side of the head, he said, gently, “You don't have to look at the floor, Harry. In fact, I'd rather you not. I just want you to act normal.” Seeing his godson raise his eyes and look at him, though appearing uncomfortable, he grinned. “That's our Harry! Now, come on, we'll get one of the elves to drag Remus away from his decorating binge and join us. He probably needs a break anyway.” With that, he began to guide Harry towards their room.
Feeling Harry curl up to his chest, Sirius kissed him on top of the head then stroked his hair. “I like this,” he said honestly.
“So do I,” Harry told him, shutting his eyes and clinging to Sirius. Being held by Sirius and Remus, both, made everything feel more manageable to him. It also made him feel so much better. There was something reassuring about it that he couldn't get any other way. The way he could hear their heartbeat and feel the heat from their skin made him feel better in ways he couldn't begin to describe.“Remus should be up here shortly, from what his note said,” Sirius told him softly, still holding him close. “Honestly? I could use a nap. I'm sure he could as well. You? That's obvious with as stressed as you are.” Looking down at Harry, he asked, hoping to push it just a little further without too much stress, “Is there anything you want right now? Like a blanket, something to drink, anything? That way we can get all settled in.” Once more, he stopped and waited. As Harry had managed this before, he was sure he could do it again. And the more he managed to make choices, the easier it was going to get on him.Shutting his eyes as he rested his head on Sirius' chest, Harry mumbled, it not taking as much effort as it had before, “A kiss.” That made him feel better. Since this nightmare started, Sirius and Remus hadn't done that. Well, not in the way they used to. It was the kind of thing Sirius had just done, like one on the top or side of the head, not the other kind. He got why they didn't. Even in the state he was in, he understood that what he was exhibiting was making them uncomfortable, but he missed it. More than he ever thought he would. Those always made him feel better and wanted. Not understanding that right off, Sirius' brow furrowed as he thought it over. Then he thought he got it. Stroking Harry's head, he asked, “Like on the lips?”Nodding as he looked up at his godfather, Harry said nothing, hoping Sirius understood and it didn't make him uncomfortable. That he didn't want, but the kissing was something he adored and wanted to continue despite what was going on.Without thinking about it, Sirius leaned down and kissed Harry softly, reaching up to run his fingers through his hair as he did. Feeling Harry give him a squeeze, Sirius kissed him more, loving how it felt to have Harry hold him the way he was. He hadn't done that since this nightmare started. No, this wasn't something that was sexual in nature, just the soft, wonderful kind of kisses that they had shared plenty of in the past. The passion that usually came before pressing on to something sexual wasn't there. He would admit to himself that he missed this as well, though he hadn't realized it until this moment.Breaking off the kiss, Sirius looked down at Harry, then stroked the side of his face. Smiling, he said, “I liked that.”Smiling back a little, Harry nodded, feeling better.Seeing the expression on Harry's face, something more than what he had seen since the mess started, Sirius asked, gently, “It helped, didn't it?”“Yes,” Harry told him honestly, still gazing at him. It made him feel so much better, like all that was 'normal' in this mess was pressing on just how it had and the affection made him feel good in a way nothing else could.“I'm going to remember that,” Sirius told him honestly. And he would, that's for damned sure. If it helped, he would keep on doing it, especially since it was something that wasn't sexual in any way.
“It's probably the affection and feeling like he's wanted,” Remus told his old lover softly. Stroking the sleeping Harry's head, he added, “We haven't done that because of what he's exhibiting. I'm sure it did help, in plenty of ways.” Blowing out a breath, he shook his head then added, “And it's not something we thought of either. Neither of us. We've done affectionate in other ways, but laid off in some areas because of how we perceive it. Maybe we shouldn't have done that.”
“Second guessing helps nothing,” Sirius told him softly. “And as long as it helps, since it isn’t anything sexual, we'll go with it. Both of us.”“Of course,” Remus nodded, smiling. “Just see if you can get out of him why and how it helps. If we know that, we can adjust accordingly in other areas.”“I'll do that as well,” Sirius assured him. Giving the sleeping Harry a squeeze, he let his own eyes drift shut. He was tired, that's for sure, but he felt better than he had before the kiss. Maybe, just maybe, that kiss helped more than Harry. If it did, it was only a plus, for all of them. Good! After he woke, he would see what else he could come up with along those lines. If the kissing helped, there was bound to be more. And he would figure it out. All there was to it.
