Chapter 17
Sipping his first cup of coffee for the day, PJ glowered at the two birds doing the demented bird dance before he could get his mail. If Poe wasn't bad enough when it came to this, tossing Edgar into it made it far more elaborate and longer. That he didn't need the first thing in the 'morning'. Sighing when it didn't look like he was getting his mail anytime soon, PJ took his 'breakfast' from Remus then asked, digging in, “Anything coming up tonight that I need to know about?” With all that had gone on, the house usually had plenty of people in and out as there was a lot to deal with. If that was the case tonight, he wanted warned so he could find something to do away from here.
“We're good tonight,” Sirius told him with a nod, snickering at the two birds. “There's some bits being taken care of, but they aren't here. So, we thought, if you didn't have anything planned, we'd go out for a while. Something like grabbing dinner and then doing something else. Remus said Tonks doesn't have anything planned either, so we thought the four of us could go out and have some laughs.”“Don't encourage them, Sirius!” PJ said with a playful elbow to the ribs. Refilling his cup after downing all the coffee, PJ grinned a little, “That sounds like fun. Where are we going, do you know?”“There's a little Magical out of the way pub we thought would be nice. It's usually fairly busy, we won't end up noticed much, but off the beaten path so we won't have to worry about trouble.” Sighing, Remus added, shaking his head, “That or the press. We know that's a concern now, so we don't want to go to some of the more popular places for fear of one of them showing up or someone talking.”“The less of that, the better off we're going to be,” Sirius told him with a snort. “We'll have fun, though. If it looks too overly busy or we get a bad vibe, we'll head to a Muggle place of some kind. We just thought we could all use a night off with all that's gone on.”“Sounds good to me,” PJ nodded after the barmy bird finally deigned to give him his mail. A quick look showed him nothing he had to tend to right off. Though there was one from Flourish and Blotts giving the details of what was coming, the exact times and all the needed information for it. That he'd take a gander at later when he had time. He'd done a few of these by now, so he knew the standard and could deal easily.“Alastor does want to bring everyone over tomorrow who’s helping with the book signing so you know just who you’re dealing with. Some I'm not sure if you've seen more than in passing, so it's quite wise.” Remus explained.“Nothing I have a problem with,” PJ said, sending the mail off then digging back into his food.“He's asking about that auto-dial feature bit on the phone and if you have a way to set it up to ring his. There was something in the manual that can do it by voice. It was his thought that if you knew how, you could set it up for his number to send off a signal that there's something wrong.” Sirius told him, petting Edgar then tossing bits of his biscuit between the two birds.“I know how,” PJ nodded between bites of food. “I'll set it up when I get his number. If it goes off, he'll know there is a big problem.”“That is wise,” Remus added. “The store has a code they gave Alastor to use if they spot issues. He wants that passed on as well.” Smiling a tad, he told PJ, a soft chuckle in his voice, “Just be prepared as Alastor is rather paranoid. He knows what he's doing, but is—slightly over the top.”“Too many years of people taking after him, so he sees Death Eaters in the shadows,” Sirius grinned. Quietly, he added, “There's no better protection for you, though. That's why we wanted him.”“Understood,” PJ nodded, grinning a tad himself. Sobering up, he added, “Paranoid isn't a bad thing with this nightmare going on.”“No shite,” Sirius told him with a sigh, shaking his head. “Not to worry; we'll make this as unobtrusive as we can and just hope we can head off anything bad before it looks to start. If not, just glue yourself to me like we've got a sticking charm on us and I'll make sure you stay safe.”“No problem there,” PJ assured him. “I do not want to get caught in another nightmare like the one in Hogsmeade.”“We're trying to do all in our power to make sure that you don't get caught in something similar,” Remus assured him. “We're afraid it might come because of that article from Skeeter. They might just attempt it to strike at Sirius as they know it's likely to set him off. So, keep on your toes. If anything does happen, let us handle it. There'll be plenty of us around and we all know exactly what we're doing. That's the reason Alastor wanted some of us along.”“Will do,” PJ nodded.“Kingsley is trying to get us an emergency Portkey to use in case this goes pear shaped. Flourish and Blotts mentioned it, actually. They don't want it out there that something happened to an author they had in for a signing. It wouldn't look good.” As PJ looked like he was going to ask, Remus nodded, “It sounds like he'll get it. He took the request straight to Madam Bones in his position as liaison with the shop keepers in the Alley. We'll know in the next couple of days. If he does, it'll be programmed to bring you and Sirius right here. Then you stay put until we get back. The DMLE may need you for a statement after that.”Though he liked all the protections being put in place, PJ snorted then grinned. “This is the biggest hassle I've had to go through for a book signing. Even more than the one I did at one of the huge stores in New York City.”“It's not nice, we get it, but we want you to stay safe. If that damned article hadn't hit, we wouldn't have to go to these extremes,” Sirius told him, looking a tad angry at that. “We'll manage, just keep that in mind. We're also going to see who we can get to be in the Alley at that time to keep an eye on anyone that might be tarrying about. We need that as well.”Smiling, Remus told him, “And we've had no shortage of volunteers for this particular duty. Most are more than willing to take it on. That's quite good. I'm sure part of it is they're doing it for Sirius, but just as much you as well.” Chuckling, he added, “Most are quite pleased to know a published author and are willing to help.”Grinning a bit sheepishly at that, PJ shrugged, “As long as it helps. All that matters, I guess.”“The way to look at it,” Sirius told him with a clap on the back. “Let us handle it and it'll all go fine,” he assured him once more. Changing topics, he asked about what else might be coming they needed to know about. He wasn't sure there as his godson had mentioned a few other bits he had to do over the next few weeks. Those he wanted to know about before hand for obvious reasons.
“I have a question,” PJ started as he was sitting on the bed. They were getting ready to go out, so he was getting dressed. Seeing Sirius motion him to go on as he came out of the loo in only his trousers and socks after finishing shaving, he continued. “Does Remus have any idea what we're exploring with this bit? I mean seeing where it goes, of course.”
Sitting on the bed with a groan, Sirius looked at PJ, resting his elbows on his knees. Sighing, he said, “No. He has no clue what happened. Though, well—he might have some as I mentioned you a couple days before I moved you in. His leanings had to be that it was something sexual as that has always tended to be the pattern. I think it just might have gotten lost in who you really were.”Rubbing a hand over his face after standing up and doing the zip on his jeans, PJ groaned then shook his head. “If it does work out, I sure as hell don't want him blowing his stack with the two of us over it. He's one that is mild-mannered and rolls with the punches, I know that, but I’m not sure how well he'd take getting blindsided with that bit, Sirius.”Flopping onto his back, Sirius moaned and scrubbed both hands over his face. “You're right, of course.” Sighing, he tried to think. After tossing it back and forth, he said, “I'll pull him aside in the next couple of days and let him know what's going on. He's swifter about picking up plenty than most give him credit for, he just hides that he has. I'll see what he says on it then go from there. Nothing to worry about.”“Good. I'll let him snarl at you over it,” PJ grinned, slipping his shirt on then starting to do up the buttons. “Don't fancy getting growled at by him.”“Thanks a lot, PJ,” Sirius snorted, grinning as he did.“Hey, you've known him longer than I've been alive, so you know how to go about it better,” PJ snickered. “At least to come out of it without having to reverse whatever he did to you. So, it's your job.”“I did not need reminded of our age difference again, PJ!” Sirius groaned, standing to finish dressing. “I can happily do without that observation, thank you very much.”“From the gossip I've heard, you tend to like them younger anyway, so my age wouldn't be that odd,” PJ grinned, glancing at him. Before Sirius could ask about that, he rolled his eyes then told him, “I'm a reporter, Sirius! I saw the research on you lot. Young and good looking was repeatedly mentioned when it came to you and your partners. That and you told me the same thing yourself.”“I do have a bit of a reputation for that, I admit it,” Sirius told him, trying to look sheepish, grinning and scratching his goatee.Rolling his eyes, PJ just shook his head, but was still grinning.“I get the point, I'll get with him over the next couple of days and lay it out without giving details I'm damned sure he would Silencio me over. He'll deal accordingly, don't worry.” Sirius told him, pulling his shirt on and starting to do up the buttons. Grinning, he chuckled, “After all, he can't say too much as Tonks isn't much older than you!”Laughing at that, PJ told him, “Make sure you point that out if it looks like spells are going to start flying.”“I plan to. Trust me, I have a huge self-preservation streak when it comes to him,” Sirius told him, shoulders shaking. Sobering up, he said, “Don't let it stress you, I'll manage. He might get miffed at first, but he'll come around.”“I hope so, because I do not want to face him every morning if he's upset. The looks he would give aren't something I think I could take,” PJ snorted, sitting back down to pull his boots on.“Yeah, he can give the evil eye real well,” Sirius admitted, shivering at the memory of those. “I'll manage, don't worry.” He just wasn't exactly sure how he was going to pull this one off, though.
Seated in the library with Remus about midnight, a couple hours after they came home, Sirius had laid out the basics of what was going on with PJ, including that encounter, though not giving details. Sirius then waited for what his old friend had to say.
Though there had been some raised eyebrows and looks that told of not liking some bits, Remus hadn't said anything yet, other than to ask for clarification on parts. Now he just looked like he was thinking it all over. That was a plus. It was even better that his old friend's wand hadn't been pulled. Though Remus was mild mannered, he actually expected that at some point during this. He was just now waiting to see what else might be asked or what he had to say on other bits.Thinking it over, hard, Remus sighed then shook his head. “Leave it to you to make something already plenty complex even worse, Sirius!”Snorting at that, Sirius couldn't help but grin just a tad. “I'll take the blame for part, but not all of it. PJ has his share there as well.”“True,” Remus admitted with a small smile himself. Rubbing a slightly trembling hand over his face, he admitted, “I don't know what to think on this, I'll be completely honest about that.”“It's complicated,” Sirius admitted honestly. “And I've not helped that at all. PJ admits he should have stopped it, but didn't as I hit something with him that just—well, you know. Since then I've made it worse as I'm the one that kissed him after he moved in. He pulled me into one of his own when I broke it off, though.”Groaning, he admitted softly, “I couldn't stop thinking about it, something I'm real honest about, and the attraction is there.” Quietly, he then added, “I also freely admit he's my type, something that attracted me to him in that bar. Since we talked it over, I understand why he went about it the way he did. I would have made it real clear something was wonky if he told me who he was while we were sitting there and that would have drawn attention we didn't need.”“What are his leanings, other than what you've mentioned, do you know? I mean on this as well as normal.” Remus clarified, wanting the full scope of the situation before he decided what to think of it and how to proceed from here.Blowing out a breath, Sirius started with the easiest first. “He admits he's bisexual. What he also admits is that he's not been in a real relationship before, though he’s had plenty of casual ones. Rather like a younger version of me, from my understanding, though for different reasons, at least at first.”Seeing Remus about to ask, he explained, “In school it was because of what he had to hide. He's not said it outright, but I get the feeling he was worried about someone discovering his secret. Since then—he was a bit like me in that he wasn't ready to settle down. For him, though, it was school and his career. At least that's the feeling I get. Well, add in still hiding who he really is.”“Those I do understand,” Remus nodded, thinking it over. “At least he was cautious enough to stay wary about protecting himself. And I get the other as well. He's done quite well for himself, in both areas he works. Anything personal would have taken a back burner if he was this focused.” Arching a brow, he asked, “And the relationship?”“He wants to try,” Sirius told him honestly. “He's the one that—well, I was apologetic over it, but he said something along the lines of not to regret it because he didn't when it came to the kiss. We then talked it over later that night, rationally. He also admitted the attraction was mutual. From what he told me, he just thought I wouldn't be interested.” Snorting, he gave a sheepish grin then admitted, “He was sure as hell dead wrong there.”“This is Harry, Sirius,” Remus finally said, tone soft, but a sigh to his voice. “How are you going to reconcile that? I do understand that he's been gone a long time and PJ doesn't really resemble the child that left, but they are the same person. We've known him since he was an infant.”Thinking that over, Sirius was silent for several minutes, trying to think how he wanted to word what he was going to say. Then, quietly, he said, looking at the floor, “I agree with something that Harry said in that interview; Harry is dead. In a way. That little boy—he's long gone, Remus. He died the year Harry left. We only really knew him for a little over two years. One as an infant and the other his third year at Hogwarts. What came after were letters that didn't allow him to show the growth he went through. We were all so damned worried about getting caught with them or someone figuring out who we were writing to that we never got to see the changes in him. He was right when he told me that I still saw him as that little boy. I think you did too, didn't you?”After pondering that for a few moments, Remus let out a reluctant sigh then nodded, “Very true. While the writing style changed over the years to show maturity, I keep hearing the voice of Harry his third year when I read them. He just didn't cover any of the more 'mature' topics with us to show any kind of aging. It was all kept to the mundane. We didn't even hear about the weather as he didn't want to give clues where he was.”“Which has not helped my leanings on this,” Sirius admitted with a groan. Leaning back in his chair and closing his eyes, he said, very quietly, “PJ is—he's—well, he's someone I'm attracted to, in plenty of ways, beyond the physical. That factors in, don't get me wrong, but it's more. I adore his sense of humor, how smart he is, what he's managed, all of it. He's not perfect, just like I'm not, but he's just bloody amazing. One of the things I like best is just talking to him, about all kinds of things. Part of it is getting to know him. Most times, the fact that he's Harry vanishes, Remus. This is PJ, someone so different it's hard to meld the two images. And I'm damned sure that's factored into this. Unlike Harry, who used to do whatever to protect everyone else, PJ is one that knows not to put himself in danger. He lets us lead the way. Harry would have never done that. I'm sure that it was something Albus was pushing as he let so much go on, but this is the complete opposite. Oh, he's plenty strong willed, don't get me wrong, as I doubt if he put his foot down, either of us would get anywhere with him, but he's smart enough to not pull what he used to. And I love it. It's a give and take, the way it should be.”Snorting, he grinned, “Even at Hogsmeade, I think, somewhere in me, I expected him to do what Harry was known for; go on full attack when the spells started heading my way. He didn't. While he didn't just stand there or cower behind me, he didn't throw himself into the fight in the way Aberforth did. What he did was help in a strange way. Though I admit when I told him to vanish, he didn't. That was Harry, at least shades of him, but he did it for the right reason; that Patronus of his.”“I can see that, yes,” Remus admitted with a slow nod. Sighing, he looked down then shook his head, “I would point out the age difference, but that would be rather hypocritical of me considering Tonks.”“It would,” Sirius snorted, shoulders shaking. Seeing the arched eyebrow and that 'look' from his friend, he laughed. Sobering up, he said, softly, “PJ is amazing, Remus. And that's what I'm attracted to. Oh, that body is part of it, I won't deny that for a second, but I adore the rest as well. He's someone I actually want to get to know, for more reasons than its Harry. I don't think I need to tell you it's not something I've ever wanted, either before or after Azkaban.”“No, it's not. You were the one that always wanted to play the field. We all saw the looks you got in school and afterwards. While you partook in the favors of plenty, that was all,” Remus admitted softly, shifting around with a soft groan. Getting comfortable, he sighed then looked at Sirius. Voice soft, he asked, “Is this really what you want? To be with PJ? It's not a way to keep Harry close to you and get to know him better?”Once more trying to find the best way to word what he wanted to say, Sirius was silent for several long moments. When he thought he had the perfect way, he started. “I'm sure. The fact that PJ is Harry gets lost most of the time, Remus. I see PJ, someone I adore doing whatever with. Like tonight. We just sat around and shot the shite, nothing more, having a couple beers. Not once did I think who I was sitting next to was Harry. That was PJ. He is so different that I have to remind myself this is Harry. There are overt reminders of that, of course, but when we're doing whatever and it doesn't relate, this is PJ.”Looking Remus dead in the eye, he said, “And PJ is the most amazing person I've ever met in my life. He's got that cockiness and some of the smugness that comes with his age, like we had, but he's so different than anyone I've ever known that it's pulled me that way. And I don't want it to stop. I adore it, completely. He seems to as well. It's just—we fit, in an odd way, and it's great.”A slow smile spreading over his face, Remus gave a nod. “I understand. As long as you two realize that if it starts to look like the romance part isn't working, you need to pull back.”“We've discussed that as well,” Sirius confirmed with a determined nod. “This wasn't something we came to a choice about lightly. I promise. What I think is we'd both regret it for the rest of our lives if we didn't try. Because I can damned sure guarantee that I would be beside myself to know that PJ was out seeing someone else. There were already thoughts along that line before we decided to give it a try. I'm sure it would get worse if he got involved.”“Understood,” Remus told him with a sigh. “Only we could end up in this situation, Sirius! It's karmic debt or something for all we pulled in school.” Hearing Sirius laugh and agree, he then told him, “I think we need to bring one other person into the secret.” Before Sirius could protest, he added, “Tonks. She's not going to say a word to anyone, you have my assurances. We're good, Sirius, damned good, and will protect the secret with everything we have, but we need more help. She's perfect. You know her, she'll help. I'll talk it over with her and let her know, if you agree.”“I agree; she's safe to do this with,” Sirius nodded. “Let me talk to PJ first. He's involved and has a say, so I won't just agree for him.”“That's fine,” Remus told him, assuming it was coming. Smiling once more, he added, “And we need to do bits like tonight more often. It was quite fun!”“It was and we will,” Sirius assured him, finally relaxing. He was sure he and Remus would have a few more talks like this in the coming weeks, but the worst was done. For that, he was thankful. Now he could press on with PJ and not have to worry about his oldest friend figuring it out then throwing a wobbler.
