Chapter 17
“Lucius, your son is a genius,” Remus said happily as he went through what Charlie had sent them. “He put this together when the rest of us missed it! That is a damned good job.”
“It is,” Lucius nodded, looking entirely smug over what his son had managed. “What he came up with gives us plenty to work with. While we aren't sure it's exactly what happened, my leanings are that it's quite close to correct.”“As am I,” Remus agreed distractedly as he took notes then sent them off to various places, including the twins' store, so they were all caught up with the information. “We just have to figure out if it is, or as close as we can get it, and the why behind it. That and how he managed. I think we have clues there, but we have to put them together.”“And get new information because what we have isn't nearly enough to make everything we know slide into place,” Lucius added, looking over the mass of parchments scattered on the table. Most of it dealt with what they knew of the bonds as the evidence leaned them all towards the bond being what drove the incident.“That we need as well,” Remus admitted with a soft sigh. “Unless you have a way to find out, we just have to wait for something to manifest that gives us the hint we need.”“I have nothing,” Lucius told him, slumping slightly. “Everyone else is trying as well and they don't either. In cases like this, waiting for something new will probably just end up unleashing more issues.”“An observation that I won't quibble with either,” Remus said softly, leaning back in his chair after sending the last off. After glancing around at the mass spread out all over, he suggested, “Since the elves are coming in shortly to do the warding, what do you say we go downstairs to the kitchen, have a snack and just relax for a time. We've been so focused on the mess going on that we've not done that much. Perhaps some time off will help us focus better and allow something we've missed to click.”“Not a bad idea,” Lucius admitted with a nod. “Instead of the kitchen, maybe the backyard. It's a rather nice day. Some time out of the house might do us good.”“Excellent suggestion and I like the idea,” Remus smiled.“We'll do that. While we relax, I'll have the elves produce the books on wall treatments and furnishings. As they'll be starting on our floors as soon as the warding is done, we can have an idea of what we want.”“And yet another great suggestion, Lucius,” Remus told him with a nod. “A good way to make the time pass.”Once he summoned an elf and gave it instructions, Lucius nodded. “Let's go get some fresh air. We might not come up with anything, but we'll feel a tad better.” Then he stood and planned to do just that.
Severus was seated in the back room of the joke shop, rather than being out front. He had come in under a disillusionment spell so no one saw him and stayed out of sight since then, not something he minded. While they were having problems with the tether slightly, it wasn't unmanageable. The two red headed menaces were dealing with it once they figured out just what they had to work with. And they learned that as long as they came back every so often to spend a few minutes, they wouldn't have too many issues. That was fine with him.
To stave off boredom, he had brought plenty to work on, such as bits with the nightmare they were researching. Elves were popping in and out if he needed more or to bring information gathered since they left. That kept him plenty occupied. He also brought along reading material of the pleasure sort and whatnot, so he was handling it just fine. In fact, he didn't mind. The room had sound proofing wards up, so he wasn't distracted by the noise from out front. Since it was summer, it seemed like there was plenty of traffic since opening, something that would have made him mental. As he looked over the latest from Lucius and Lupin, he nodded at the information. Oh, he loved what it contained and how it was put together. Once he pulled the book over he was compiling everything in then jotted it down, he looked at the pattern from the debacle and had to agree with Draco's assessment. Poetic justice if there ever was any. While the information was good to have and gave him a sadistic smirk, it helped nothing but added to a pile of bits they couldn't piece together. It all fit, he was sure of that, but the how was something none of them knew. After leaning back and crossing his legs, relaxing, he once more read through what was there. As expected, nothing was clicking when it came to how it all might relate. The only part was the bond marks, but that was a given. They just didn't know how it might relate or why the bond did what happened. It was a case of not enough information, sadly. Until they received more, in some way, nothing was going to fit. With a dry snort, he tossed the book on the table beside him. As he wasn't getting anywhere with it, except frustrated, it was time to put it aside. If he focused elsewhere and something was about to click, it might happen because of the distraction. Instead, he picked up the list of what he was moving tonight from his home. While he had fought this off until now, hoping against hope that there was some way to break the bond, the time had come for him to realize it wasn't in the offing. No, it was time to bow to the inevitable and move everything he wanted. Mostly that was books and other personal items. For the most part, the furnishings and whatever would stay. It wasn't as though he cared about any of those bits anyway. Honestly? As far as he was concerned, everything in that house could rot and he wouldn't care. It was just a place to store his books, nothing more. Hogwarts had always been his home, well, since school and he went back to teaching. He didn't care about that damned house.Making a note to move his lab equipment over, he also made one to see about finding a place in the basement to set it up. As of now, he didn't need it, but one never knew. Better safe than sorry on that. Lucius had also sent a small book of furnishings and what they could do with decorating. He wasn't bored enough to go through something like that yet. As long as the colors on the basics didn't make his eyes bleed, he didn't care. Well, that and everything was comfortable. Beyond that, he didn't give a damn about decorating schemes. If the twins wanted to take that on, they could. If not, just so it was nice and clean, it could stay the way it was. Well, as long as he wasn't faced with Gryffindor colors for everything. A basic, simple whatever was good by him.As he was perusing his list, though he was sure everything he wanted was on it, he looked up when the door opened. As expected, it was the twins. It was probably time to come back and spend several minutes together so the tether didn't give them issues. However, as he watched, the two were going over something on a sheet of parchment, talking in low tones. “Something amiss?” He asked, going back to his list.“Nothing huge, no,” Fred told him distractedly.“Just having issues with something we're experimenting with,” George told him with a sigh.“We can't get it to do just what we want,” Fred groaned.“And we can't suss out where the problem is either,” George added, flopping down in a chair by Snape.“Do I want to know just what deranged idea you've come up with now?” Severus asked with a snort, wondering if he should prepare to shield himself against fallout from an experiment gone wrong.“We've been asked by a few of the girls for hair color changing potions,” Fred started explaining.“Nothing that lasts forever, mind you, but for like a week,” George told him.“They want more of the odd colors,” Fred pressed on.“Though normal ones were asked about as well,” George continued.“We thought it wasn't a bad idea,” the two said together.Thankful it wasn't something completely deranged and was relatively harmless, Severus nodded. “What's the issue?” That he was curious about as this was probably more Potions based than dealing with Charms or Transfiguration.“The colors are not only doing odd bits, but either fade too fast or stay too long,” Fred sighed, slumping as he looked over the sheet he held.“And we can't figure out why,” George groaned, also slumping.“Dare I ask what, or who, you're testing this on?” Severus asked, now curious about a solution. He knew the basic potions for such endeavors, but this wasn't one he had heard of.“Our pygmy puffs,” Fred chuckled.“We figured if we could get this down, we could tweak it enough to apply it to them,” George grinned.“That way we can do custom colors, such as for houses,” Fred pressed on.“Coats of arms,” George continued.“Favorite colors,” Fred added.“Bits like that. Nothing too deranged,” they said together. And that was a harmless bit of testing from Severus' point of view. Now highly curious what they were working with, he held his hand out for the paper. “Let me see. If its potion based, I might spot the issue.” Oh, he sure as hell wasn't going to give too much of an assist, but this would stave off the boredom he was dealing with.Fred handed over the sheet, trying not to grin at his brother. “It's not harmful to the puffs.”“We've made sure of that by doing the initial tests on ourselves,” George added.“Once we got the basics down, we pressed on to them,” they said together. To let them know he heard, Severus nodded distractedly as he went through the potion they had there, tracing the ingredients, how they were put together and such. Though he wouldn't say it aloud, it was ingenious. They had taken a potion that wouldn't be taxing for first years and tweaked in a way he hadn't seen before. And the way they had gone about it wasn't simple or easy, but it was functioning. Amazing.Once he read through it again, Severus was now actually curious what the problem was as what was written down should work. He then began asking questions about the reaction, what was going wrong and if they knew where the problem might lie. Though he didn't necessarily want to help the two menaces, this was curious for him, so he wanted to find the solution.
“It's not the wards,” Bill told Remus and Lucius as he sat down at the table outside. Harry and Sirius were beside him after he finished going through everything he knew to check.
“I didn't figure it was,” Remus sighed, shaking his head. “Sirius and I checked for everything we could think of and detected nothing amiss. Did you find anything else in it?”“Yes,” Bill told him with a nod. “And odd spell that I'm not sure what it is. I took readings and wrote down every bit of information I could get on it.” He then pushed the parchment over to Remus. “I haven't seen it before. Sirius checked as well and it's the same there for him. All we know is it's not original to the wards, though it's wrapping around and infusing into them in some way.”“We thought to have both of you look at it as well to see if you can think of something we didn't when it comes to this and spells to figure out what it is.” Sirius told him, relaxing back with a beer, crossing his legs and putting a hand on the back of Harry's head.“We'll take it on when we get done here,” Lucius assured him, reading what was there over Remus' shoulder. “I have a feeling the readings are going to match parts of the spells found on the ones that caused the problems over here.”“I'll bet it is too,” Bill told him, putting a hand on Harry's knee and giving it a squeeze. “Whatever happened isn't done. Not sure what it is, of course, but maybe someone can sort it.”“So far no one has managed, but we'll send it along,” Remus sighed, tapping the parchment with his wand so it went to those in the house that were working on the matter. He would owl it to Albus later after putting the right spells on it. “Every little bit of information helps, though. That's how we have to look at it. It might not mean something now, but can later.”“True. It's just frustrating to have all the clues and not even part of the answers,” Sirius snorted, shaking his head.“An assessment none of us will argue with,” Lucius groaned. “We'll just sort as we get it and try to put it all together. All we can do.”After figuring there was no need to chew that topic to death, Remus changed it. With a sigh, he said, “We've got some bits to catch everyone up on. You saw the bit Draco came across with.” Seeing nods and grins, though Harry looking a tad guilty over it, Remus told him, “We have another mystery to add to the pile. How Draco stepped in front of Charlie.” Then Remus walked them through what Charlie sent along with that. When he finished, he said, “Draco made it clear that even normal impulses weren't there, that he just did it with no reason he can think of. Lucius and I are of the opinion that its bond related. We're the only two that the mark didn't feel like it was on fire with. The others all reported a similar reaction. Which I do believe adds credence to the point of what happened with all of you is that the bond probably fed plenty of it, from all three of you because of what you were feeling. It's affecting something in us. Severus compared what he felt to the summons from He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named in pain and intensity. I think that is a big clue, for all of us.”“Sounds like it,” Sirius nodded. “We're the only ones that had the show of the colors, though.”“I have a feeling that if it continued on, everyone more closely involved might have manifested the same light show, for lack of a better word.” Lucius added, looking between the three. “They were describing something almost identical to what you did.”“Narcissa is taking this on as she's focusing on the bonds,” Remus tossed in. “We think, because your bond seems better developed, that it manifested more.” Smiling at tad at Harry, he added, “And the fury that was building over so much. Harry, you are the type to not put up with much and your reaction is different than the others that were involved. They all admit it. We do get everyone was fed up, but you're the type that tends to stand up rather than just let it go. That probably drove it.”“Maybe,” Harry mumbled, looking down and thinking parts over. “I was at the end, honestly, even before that bit. She just—I don't want to play this game with her.”“And you don't have to,” Sirius told him, giving his back a pat.“Nope,” Bill told him with a tiny grin. “Playing is done. We both hit the end a while back. It just came down to you had all you could take. Nothing more.”“I believe, as I've said before, past history factored in heavily,” Remus soothed. “It was coming. This just pushed it faster.”“Yeah, I get it. It's just what happened,” Harry sighed, shaking his head. He understood that this wasn't something he consciously did, but it didn't help the guilt. While he was furious over so much and wanted to give that lot a piece of his mind, he hadn’t wanted to hurt them.“Just keep reminding yourself that it wasn't your fault,” Remus told him gently. After seeing a nod, he changed topics once more. “Lucius and I decided to spend the time while the elves work on the warding picking out decorations and furnishings for our floor. As yours is done, we'll pass along the book the elves created for us so you can do the same thing.” He then copied the book and passed it over to the three. “Lucius assigned a couple elves to help you with what you need. Feel free to pick out what you want. If you can't find anything you like, we have some catalogs ordered.”“We'll find something from this, don't worry,” Sirius grinned, taking it. While he wasn't much into the decorating shite, his thought was not only was it something the three of them could do together and have some fun with, but change the damned house into something that didn't invoke the bad memories so much of what was around did.Lucius smirked at the look on Sirius' face, figuring the top floor would probably end up most interesting when it came to decorations. After a shake of his head, he pressed on to the mundane of how to direct the elves on what they wanted.
After putting his robe on the bench at the foot of the bed, Lucius slid between the sheets with a soft sigh of contentment. While the decorating of their floor wasn't done, they at least had a new bedroom suite, including a bed that was not only far softer, but bigger. That pleased him. The following day, the elves would have the warding done on all the floors, so they would start on the decorating.
Once he settled into a comfortable spot, Lucius sighed softly, smiling a tad. Though it was a small comfort item, it vastly improved his mood in many areas, bringing him a creature comfort he hadn't felt for what seemed like years. As of now, he was done with his nightly ritual, so Remus was taking his turn in the lavatory. He tended to take far longer, so they decided he would use it first. That had become the ritual for them and they were comfortable with it, so it continued. Lucius didn't mind as it gave him a bit of time alone. As the bond made it to where they couldn't separate much, any time alone was good.Being tired, he gave a soft sigh then looked up as Remus came out. As of now, they had a longer tether and could shut the door, so they once more had privacy, another improvement. Separate beds weren't in the offing, though. The bond just wouldn't allow it. They were used to it by now, so it wasn't a great hardship.Once Remus slid into bed, Lucius gave a sigh and turned. “You took the Wolfsbane then?”“Right after it was delivered,” Remus assured him, settling into a bed softer than anything he had slept in since being at Hogwarts. “This is most comfortable.”“Indeed,” Lucius nodded with a smirk. “If we're stuck, we may as well be comfortable in the circumstances.”“I do see the logic in that,” Remus chuckled. With a soft groan, he turned on his side, facing Lucius. “This is nice, though.” Hand under his head, propped up on his elbow, Remus looked at Lucius, feeling a tug of some kind. He wasn't sure what it was, but it was there and it was pulling him closer, wanting this to press on somewhat.Lucius, too, was feeling that tug. Instead of fighting it like he would have in the past, he leaned forward, that tug guiding him. As he did, Remus did as well and they met in the middle, kissing softly. It wasn't the passionate sort either of them had shared in the past with partners, but it was there.Slightly stunned, Remus wasn't sure what to do when they broke it off. Though disconcerted and a tad red, he didn't comment. Instead, he smiled and said, “Sleep is in order, I think. After all, one never knows what tomorrow will bring.”“Oh yes,” Lucius agreed, flustered himself and unsure what to make of the kiss, though he would quietly admit to himself that he enjoyed it. Settling down, he shut his eyes and thought over what just happened. As strange as it was, he liked it and wanted more.As was now the norm for them, Remus pressed close to Lucius and shut his eyes. He, too, was thinking about the kiss and the pull for more. That he wouldn't indulge in tonight, though. No, it could wait.
Charlie opened his eyes and looked out the window. There wasn't anything to see, of course, but it was there. Like normal anymore, Draco was in bed with him, curled up and breathing deeply, obviously asleep. He was holding him with one arm draped over his side.
At first, he was uncomfortable with this whole bit, but he wasn't anymore. Something about it relaxed him. He didn't know why either. It was just there. It seemed like it affected Draco as well. Since it started, he had calmed down and stopped with some of the behaviors that made him completely mental. Though he couldn't be certain if it was just this, people talking to him about compromise or a combination of those and other bits. He honestly didn't care what it was, just so it smoothed out what was going on. That's all that mattered to him. After feeling Draco shift in his sleep, he looked down. It was nothing, of course, just Draco turning slightly. There was some mumbling with it, telling him a dream was probably involved as well. Giving the younger wizard a squeeze, he shut his eyes. Then he rested his head against Draco's. He wasn't sure why he did such bits, but there was a pull that way. As tired as he was, he didn't feel like trying to fight it. Draco, too, seemed to feel it as he shifted in his sleep once more, just slightly, pressing tighter to him. With a smile on his face, Charlie, too, soon fell asleep.
Head coming up after another dream, Severus gripped his wand under his pillow and looked around, squinting. With a groan and shake of his head, he relaxed. Once again he was in the middle, stretched out on his stomach, with one twin on either side of him. Letting loose of his wand, he sighed. While it was still slightly odd, he was dealing with it the only way he knew; going with it.
After the twins seemed to shift in sync, pressing to him, both draping an arm over his back, he flopped his head back down on the pillow and was asleep soon after. As he drifted off, the thought crossed his mind that this was the best he had slept in years. He wasn't going to analyze it more than that, even if he did remember in the morning. If it helped, that's all that mattered to him.
Though Harry and Bill were asleep, Sirius wasn't. Unlike most times when he found it hard to drift off, it wasn't nightmares about or memories of Azkaban that brought it on. In fact, he was fairly relaxed. He was sure that he would fall asleep quickly once he was finished thinking. It was the thinking that was keeping him awake.
While there was some guilt about what he knew was coming over the whole bond, as sex would come into it, he was finding that he rather liked the whole bit and honestly didn't want it broken. Oh, by now all of them were dead bang certain nothing could manage that, but even if they could he didn't want them to. He agreed with what Harry said during that whole mess when he shouted he didn't want it broken. As it was, he was with Harry all the time and could do what he promised. While adding Bill in was odd, he was dealing with it and liked that as well.Bill wasn't someone had known well, just through Order meetings. Getting to know him now made it to where he could understand what Harry saw in him. No, he didn't have the physical attraction to Bill that Harry did, but he liked being around him. He was smart, funny and all manner of other bits on top of the fact that Bill adored Harry in a way no one besides himself and Remus did. How could he not like someone that was so smitten with his godson? He couldn't. And he didn't feel the need to fight it. After all, they were stuck together so he might as well like it.Since that first kiss, there were others, especially right before bedtime. Harry's comment of it being hot to see resonated now more than it did before. It was hot, plenty, to see Harry and Bill kissing. And he assumed it was the reverse as well, like Bill mentioned. He liked those kisses, though they weren't passionate and needy like the ones you shared with someone in those moments of passion, but they were better in their own way because of who was doing the snogging. Yeah, he was going to go with that as well and not bitch. Not only that, but he was looking forward to it pressing further. As he let his eyes finally shut and pressed tighter to Harry, he decided, like the other two had, that he didn't want this broken or even want anyone to try because he liked it just how it was. While he hadn't ever really considered settling down with anyone, even before Azkaban, he was now. Though it was forced on him, he rightly didn't give a damn. It was probably the best thing that had ever happened to him and he would go with it.
