Chapter 17
“What's this?” Sirius asked, taking the parchment from Tom. They were eating lunch in the kitchen and Tom had shown up.
As Sirius started to read, with Harry doing so over his shoulder, Tom explained, looking plenty smug, “An advanced copy of an article which will hit tomorrow's Prophet.”“This is great,” Sirius said with a grin and chuckle. While the article wasn't written by Skeeter, it sure seemed to use some of her tactics while taking after Fudge and the Ministry for not only hiding the fact that Peter was in custody, but the lack of any real effort to find Harry. They did point out there was some, but it wasn't nearly enough and it seemed like the efforts to find him were taking a back seat to plenty else not nearly as urgent. As they pointed out, the amount of days Harry was gone meant he could be anywhere and any clues there might have been in the first couple of days were probably gone. It then asked what had been done to find him as the public had no idea, just vague mumblings the Ministry was working on it, nothing more. Then it tossed out there a copy of a memo by Fudge which showed he was putting more effort into helping the person who caused the mess than doing anything to find the victim of it. Another point made was not nearly enough was being put in place to ensure more foolishness such as this didn't happen again at Hogwarts. They even called out the Board for not doing more. Then they smacked Albus and the heads of houses for partially allowing it to happen. They showed proof in the form of several excerpts of letters over several years from many recommending more help at the castle to assist with the mass of students. Each time the Board didn't take the suggestion and let it go on knowing there was an issue.“Plenty won't like this,” Harry said distractedly as he read.“No, they won't,” Sirius agreed with snicker, shaking his head as he read the proof they gave. Then he said, tone distracted as he read more, “I didn't know people had suggested such steps as monitors before.”“They did years ago,” Tom told him, leaning back and crossing his legs after taking a cup of tea from an elf. “Before the first war. And the student population wasn't as big as it is now. I'm sure you know the teachers tend to let the students govern themselves. It was that way even when I was in school.”After handing the parchment to Harry once he finished reading, he scratched his chin and shook his head. “I can see where it would help. Lots of the nonsense would stop if they had a few around and it would take the stress off the teachers.”“I agree completely. The Board, from my understanding, not only didn't think it necessary, but didn't want the added cost, though it wouldn't be much as they could find plenty of volunteers who would work for a minimum of money and a place to live.”“They should have,” Harry said quietly, putting the parchment on the table. “It would stop a lot of junk that's happened, honestly.”After hearing Tom agree, he asked, “Is this going to help get Sirius cleared?”“Yes,” Tom told him firmly with a nod. “My understanding is most, even plenty of my followers, don't know Wormtail was in custody. They've done everything in their power to keep it secret while they fumble. Having it out there will call them to task for it and force their hand in some way. With how we managed to get him there, they have all the proof they will ever need.”“Good,” Sirius said with a small smile, slipping his arm around the grinning Harry and pulling him close.“My understanding is Fudge is already working on your pardon papers,” Tom told him, sounding smug once more, lifting his chin. “Some sources have told me he had to dig to find the template for the official one. It tells me he's planning on it even without the article. My guess is he'll move faster once it hits.”“Idiot,” Sirius grumbled, shaking his head.“You'll hear no argument from me there,” Tom snorted, fighting the urge to roll his eyes. While Fudge had his uses, he couldn't stand the inept, foolish man. In fact, the next election he would have those who followed him, including the ones with plenty of clout and money, back a candidate he had already chosen. He wanted someone in the office who could help his agenda, not bumble.Harry leaned against Sirius and looked at the parchment still on the table. While it was good as he wanted Sirius cleared, there was another topic he wanted to know about. It just came down to he was hesitant to ask as he didn't want details. After a few moments of internal debate, he asked, softly, not looking up, “What's going on with Draco? I know what was said in the paper and what you've talked about, of course, but I was wondering if there was more.”“Fudge finally saw sense and is backing away from Lucius. As there is little mitigation that will help him, aside from his age, which won't be enough, Draco will feel the full penalty for what he pulled,” Tom told him, an evil glint to his eyes. “My understanding is he probably won't get the same sentence as an adult, but he's going to Azkaban. For a long time. The same with his two goons.”“If I remember right, he'll get some kind of break because of his age,” Sirius tossed in, giving Harry a squeeze. “Unless it's changed a lot, it'll be about ten years knocked off.”“That's about all,” Tom told him, planning to push for the full penalty. “In this case, he knew just what he was doing and the effect of the bomb. He also knew it was wrong, hence the reason he went about brewing it the way he did. For the first time in his spoiled life, he will have to answer for what he did and it'll involve a penalty Lucius can do nothing about.”Though Harry nodded, he said nothing. He honestly wasn't sure how he felt about it, though he wanted the oik to pay for what he caused and took away from him.“If I learn any more, I'll let you know,” Tom said. Then he stood with a soft groan and told them, “If you need anything else, send an elf.” He then swept out.“Arse,” Sirius muttered without any heat. Looking at Harry, he grinned then said, “Let's finish eating then find something to do. I'll go talk to him later about brooms. I say we go out and muck about flying again. What do you think?”“Sounds good to me,” Harry told him with a smile then picked up his fork and took a few more bites. He was actually looking forward to flying, honestly, and just goofing around. It made the whole mess a little more bearable. Anything to help was something he'd try at this point.
Nose buried in the paperwork he was holding, trying to suss out what to do with a tricky piece of legislation, Tom about jumped out of his skin when there was a sharp rap on the door. Head jerking up, he let out a soft sigh when he saw Sirius standing there. This was the first time Sirius had sought him out, so he was startled as he wasn't ever disturbed except by Nagini. After tossing the parchment on the desk, he leaned back and asked, “Is something amiss? And where is Harry?” As he didn't feel anything 'off', he assumed everything was fine, but wanted to make sure.
“He's fine, just asleep. Nagini is staying with him, so I left her there so I could come talk to you about something.” Sirius told him, coming in and flopping in a chair in front of the desk. After stretching his legs out with a groan, he crossed his ankles then launched in, “There is something I wanted you to pick up, though I'll pay for it, and a bit I want to ask you about.”“What do you need and I'll arrange what I can,” Tom told him, curious what it could be. He didn't expect anything outrageous, of course, as the two weren't likely to ask for such bits, but he hoped it wouldn't be anything tricky to get his hands on or that he had to go into Muggle areas again.“Two new brooms,” Sirius told him with a sigh. He was a bit tired himself and planned to join Harry when he finished talking to the evil git. Then he explained, “We've been mucking about on them and I thought it would be good to have some new ones.”“Easy enough and I'll ensure they're here tomorrow for you,” Tom told him, thankful it was something simple and the elves could tend to it for him without an issue.“Good,” Sirius nodded. “We were also wondering if we could set up a Quidditch pitch. There's a field by the croquet court big enough to have a smallish one. Not sure what we can do about the hoops, but I'm fairly certain the elves can fashion something for us.”“I don't care,” Tom told him honestly. He didn't use anything outside, though liked what was there because it was nice and was a status symbol for himself. “I'll have the elves pick up the hoops and balls as well for you. They can tend to setting them up.”“Appreciated,” Sirius nodded. “We were also wondering about some of those tent things to keep the rain and such off so we can cover the croquet court with it. We like the game and it gives us something to do, so we wanted something so we don't get wet as the weather grows worse.”“I have a weather dome around here. The elves will set it up on days you need it. I'll also have them pull out some various other outdoor games that came with the house. The two of you can decide what you like,” Tom told him, pleased. At least he wasn't asking for anything hard to procure or deal with. If the two were occupied with whatever, they were less likely to cause issues for him.“Good,” Sirius said. Then he changed topics, “I'm telling you now, I'm taking a break from research. Not only am I coming up with nothing that can help us, it's frustrating as hell. Unless you know somewhere else to look, I doubt I'm going to find anything in those books. Instead, I'm going to spend time with Harry doing whatever.”Taking in all Sirius said, Tom nodded. Taking the first topic, he said, “Research—I've found another way to go about getting what we need. Don't bother until I receive the research from another source. I'm not sure if we'll get all we need, but I think this is the best way.”When Sirius nodded, he pressed on to the second part of what Sirius mentioned, “Is Harry doing better?” He assumed he was a little as they were going outside and mucking about, but wanted to make sure.“He's improving,” Sirius told him honestly. “It's not by leaps and bounds, but some. He's staying awake longer and taking an interest in some bits, like flying. It's just slow going.”“Good,” Tom sighed, pleased. “Nagini said she can't get him to talk about much and is concerned,” he said, leaning back in his chair and crossing his legs. “I'm not sure if you can give her hints I can't, but you might want to think about it. While you can't understand her, she can understand you, so you can impart it directly. If it doesn't work, you might have to take it on by yourself as I don't know what else to do to help.”“Not sure there,” Sirius admitted with a sigh and shake of his head. “Let me think on it and I'll pass along to her what I can. I know part of the issue, but I'm sure not all of it. Harry—well, he isn't going to talk about some of it, honestly, so I'm just pressing on for normal.” He then made a mental note to see if he could wiggle around to figure out what was bringing most of this on. The situation was probably a large part of it, but Sirius was convinced there was more to it than just the whole bond bit. He just didn't have a clue where the worst was coming from. Hell, he didn't have a clue, honestly. So, he had some work to do.Tom rocked slightly in his chair and laced his fingers then rested his hands on the desk. “We do need to start setting up something for Harry's schooling. As we don't have to worry about so much they do in school and can go at his pace, we do need to tackle it. I'm not sure about NEWTS or if we can ever manage there, but he does need to press on for his own sake.”“Yeah, not something I thought of,” Sirius admitted with a groan, head going back. After thinking over the topic for a few moments, he said, “Let him get in a better place before we go that route. As his career isn't an issue with some classes, it means we can drop a few. Let's see what I can come up with.”“I say we just focus on the major areas and drop potions. If he wants to take it, we can manage, but there's no need if we don't have to.” Tom suggested. “We also don't have to worry about specific lesson plans. While he needs the theory, you can easily incorporate some of it with other areas.”“Yeah, I'll start doing that bit,” Sirius agreed with a nod, thinking that idea was a good way to go about this mess. He just wanted Harry's input in it before he decided. After all, it involved him and he had a choice in how they went about the matter. As he had plenty to do and didn't think Sirius felt like just 'talking', Tom asked, “Is there anything else then?”“That was all,” Sirius said, standing with a groan. Though he was being civil, something he really didn't know the why behind other than he and Harry were basically prisoners in the home and had to play nice, he still didn't want anything to do with the arse. So, he would vacate the premises and get back to Harry before he woke up. With a soft groan, he then stretched. “I'll leave you to it then,” he sighed then nodded to him before showing himself out. He was planning to take a nap anyway as he was tired.Though Tom nodded, he said nothing, watching Sirius go. So far this was going at least somewhat smoothly. As he didn't want a huge fight with the two since he knew plenty Sirius didn't about the bond, he didn't want to cause one if he didn't have to. Yes, he planned for Sirius to stay in the dark as long as he could manage so he couldn't pull or invoke something not easily countered. When Sirius left and he could hear him making his way down the hall, Tom gave a sigh himself then straightened up planning to get back to work. There was much to tend to so his plans went right and he had to keep watch on other areas so it didn't end up going pear shaped. To manage, he had to stay on top of plenty.Once more focusing, he delved back in, planning to clear as much off his desk as he could manage before the day was out. Though he made a note about what Sirius requested, he wanted to knock a few things off first before he summoned an elf to tend to it.
When Sirius came back into their bedroom, he gave a sigh of relief. Harry was in the same position as when he left, still breathing deeply. He assumed he would sleep the whole time he was gone as they had mucked about a lot and both were tired, but he was worried. While Harry would be fine on his own, he wanted to make sure Harry wasn't left alone. It was more concern of the vague sort than anything specific.
As he walked towards the bed, he could see Nagini curled up on the pillow above Harry just as she was before he left. The snake still right unnerved him because of her massive size and what she was, but he was learning to deal with it. From what he knew from Harry, she was just trying to help and was friendly. He would take his godson's word for it and go from there. After kicking off his boots and stripping down to his boxers, he slid into the bed then curled up to Harry, holding him close. Honestly? Holding Harry helped him as much as it did his godson. As they both got something out of it, he would go with it and not ponder it too much. Shutting his eyes with a sigh, he started to relax.“That you, Sirius?” Harry asked, opening his eyes a tad, still mostly asleep. While he assumed it was, in his sleep muddled state he wanted to make sure.“Just me,” Sirius assured him, giving him squeeze and kiss on the shoulder.“Good,” Harry sighed, relaxing and shifting to press back against Sirius. While the uncomfortable thoughts came again, he didn't want to do without Sirius' touch as he was certain it was the only thing getting him through this nightmare still sane.“You fine?” Sirius asked to make sure, though he thought he was as Harry was quite relaxed.“I'm good,” Harry assured him, smiling a tad at the touch. “Just felt the bed move and it woke me, nothing more.”“Nothing to worry about,” Sirius assured him, cuddling him close. “There was just something I wanted to take care of.” With a bit of a grin, he added, “It'll be a surprise for you and you'll love it.”While Harry was curious, he was too tired to really inquire too much about it, just nodding. Hearing Nagini hiss softly on the pillow above him, he reached up to pet her on the head. Then he asked, “She bothering you here?” From what he could tell, Sirius was still right unnerved by her, probably for plenty of reasons.Though he looked at the snake and was slightly wary as reptiles weren't like having something warm-blooded near you, he figured him being uncomfortable took a backseat to the good she was doing Harry and how she was attempting to help. “She's fine there as long as she doesn't slither over me or lay on top of me while I sleep,” he finally said.Harry listened to her impart her assurances she wouldn't then passed them along to Sirius. Quietly, he added, “Her hissing is rather relaxing, honestly. Somewhat soothing for some reason. I rather enjoy it.”“As long as you do, it's all that matters,” Sirius told him though he didn't feel the same way about the noise. He'd put up with it though. As he lay there, he looked at his godson. You could tell Harry was tired, of course, but he was also plenty relaxed, something good. Hand starting to stroke Harry's side, he told him, keeping a soft voice and gentle tone, “Just to reiterate what I've said; you can talk to me about anything, Harry, you know that. It doesn't matter what. We've discussed plenty of personal bits over the last year or so. I get where some of this is coming from, but I'm sure there's more there. If you talk about it, and you know I'll keep it to myself, you might feel better. Well, either that or we can figure out a way to work with whatever it is.”“Thanks,” Harry told him softly, still feeling plenty tired. Though he didn't make any kind of indication he was going to say what was bugging him most.As this was typical Harry, Sirius expected nothing, so he was going to nudge a tad. “Can you at least give me a hint about one of the bits bugging you? I figure it's probably more than one thing.”With a sigh, Harry curled deeper under the covers, but also pressed back to Sirius tighter. Thinking it over for a few moments, he finally gave up a small part of it and told him, “Just—let's say Draco took something from me that meant more than almost anything in my life and it bugs me.”Sirius was happy he was at least getting a hint he could work with, though he had no clue what Harry meant by that. So, he asked, “What did he take?”As this was just a small part of all that was bothering him and not something too horrid, Harry explained quietly. “What we used to have together. It was the closest relationship to having a parent I've ever known. He took that away with this stunt and changed it to where it won't ever be like that again.”Sirius thought over what Harry said, trying to suss out what he meant then he figured it out fairly quickly. Tossing the sex into the mix, even if it wasn't 'real' in some way, the little oik had changed their relationship plenty. While he had pushed it aside in working with so much else which was going on, it was there for him as well. Like so many other couples, once you took the step of making something sexual, there was no going back to the way it was before as it would always be there. Then there was the realization that what happened was Harry's first sexual experience other than snogging. So, it had turned his world upside down as he didn't have experience of any kind to compare it to.“Now I get it,” he finally admitted quietly, resting his head against Harry's. Beyond those words, he didn't know what to say to Harry to make it better as there was no changing it, no matter how much he wanted to. “We'll manage, Harry. It's changed and not something we ever would have wanted, but we're together. In the end, that part is all that matters. I get to take care of you like I promised and you're with me all the time. We'll make the best of it.”“It's just—I want the other back, though I like the together,” Harry admitted quietly, not opening his eyes.“So do I,” Sirius told him honestly. “We'll just deal with what we have the best we can. It's all we can do.”“I'm trying,” Harry told him with a sigh. “It's just not that easy.”“No, it's not,” Sirius conceded, giving him a squeeze. “Just give it time to adjust. We've had such a lot of shit thrown at us in a short time that we're still in a big of turmoil over it. It'll settle and we'll press on, all we can do. As long as we stick together, we'll get through it.”“I know,” Harry muttered, not really wanting to talk about it more as it gave him a mental ache, the only way he knew how to describe the feeling, to think about it. However, he did add, to make himself see a bit of an upside to this nightmare, “I like the together bit. It's better than the mirrors.”“So do I,” Sirius told him honestly, smiling sadly since Harry couldn't see it. “We'll have fun, don't worry. And find a way to get through this. As long as we're together, we'll make it.”“We will,” Harry told him softly. Focusing on the hissing and how it felt to be held, he started to drift off again because he just didn't want to deal with so much. It was the easiest way to handle it as the sleep let him push it aside. As he didn't have any other way to take it on, he would go with this.As he listened to Harry's breath deepen, Sirius lay there holding him. Thinking over what Harry said and trying to figure out the full meaning behind it, all that came to mind was he wanted to hex Draco within an inch of his life for this stunt. The little brat had no idea what he had taken from his godson and what kind of relationship he had forced him into. Now that Harry mentioned it, he realized just how much it had changed what was there and he hated it. Probably as much as Harry, if not more. Yeah, revenge was coming at some point, he just didn't know how he would manage. But he would. For both of them.
As the two finally dozed off, Nagini lay there still hissing. Harry liked the sound, so she would continue. While she did, she thought over what she heard, trying to process it in a way she could fully comprehend what they meant. Though she didn't fully understand, she was thankful Harry gave her a starting point for talking to him. It was easier than going in with nothing as she had been. Later, when they were alone at some point, she would have him explain what he meant. When she understood, she would go from there and try to figure out the rest. It would help. Getting Harry to talk it out in the guise of explaining might do him good anyway. It was at least a start.
Still hissing softly, the massive serpent shifted on the pillow to a better place, making certain not to disturb the two. She would stay here until Harry woke, unless Tom needed her for something. He seemed to like the hissing and it helped, so she would continue. For her, it felt good to feel useful as Tom wasn't this way. While she adored Tom, she was coming to realize she liked these two as well, just in a different way. It was nice with them around and she was sure Tom would feel the same way soon, if what she sensed was right. Good. The three would do well together and be happy eventually. She liked that idea and would help all she could.
