Chapter 17
Hermione had somehow fallen asleep with her head resting on the side of the bed and Sirius holding her hand. When she awoke the next morning, her neck and back were stiff from the awkward position. Pulling herself upright, she yawned.
Sirius stirred, his grey eyes fluttering open. "Hermione?"
"Yes, love, I'm right here." She took his hand, trying to soothe him. He tried to sit up, gasping as he did. "Relax," she whispered. "Don't strain yourself."
"Are you all right? Did you sleep in that chair all night?" he inquired.
Hermione nodded. "I did, but I'm all right."
"You should have slept in the bed," Sirius chided her. "Especially in your condition."
She snorted, a laugh escaping her lips. "In my condition? I'm pregnant, Sirius, not dying. Besides, I slept in the library plenty of times during my previous pregnancy."
"Well, that won't happen again," Sirius said. "I won't allow it."
"You won't allow it?" Hermione inquired incredulously. "Sirius, I think you better take a moment to collect yourself. Your pain killers are addling your brain."
"They are not!" Sirius protested. "I'm being serious."
Hermione let out a laugh. "You should know by now, Sirius, that I am not a woman who can be bossed around so easily."
"I wasn't trying to boss you," he weakly protested, realizing his mistake. "I'm only looking out for your well-being, Hermione."
She gently patted his hand. "Relax, Sirius. I know what I'm doing. I don't need you to boss me around. I've done this before."
"I know that," he snapped. "But I wasn't there for you. I want to be this time, Hermione. I don't want you to have to do all this alone."
"I won't, Sirius. I have you with me. But you need to trust me, all right?"
She sat there, holding his hand. His eyes had closed as he thought over her words. She held her breath as she waited, hoping he would agree. Eventually, Sirius nodded. "I trust you, Hermione."
"Good," she replied, taking his hand and pressing a kiss to it. "I was almost afraid to tell you."
"Why?" Sirius asked. "I was a bit shocked yesterday, but I'm very happy. I love you, Hermione, and I have always wanted to have more children with you. I love you."
Hermione smiled, tears welling in her eyes. "Sirius, I love you, too. I love you so much." Leaning forward, she placed a gentle kiss to his lips.
"Do you think Eridanus will be all right with a sibling?" Sirius inquired.
"Perhaps," Hermione said. "He's too young right now. He'll be almost two when the baby is born so we'll just have to wait and see."
"I love you both so much. You and Eridanus are my world."
Hermione stood. "I'll summon the Healer. She should come and check you over; make sure you're healing all right."
Sirius watched as she left the room. Letting out a sigh, he closed his eyes. He didn't mean to fight with her. She was his world and he hated when he somehow messed things up.
But he was afraid. He wasn't there through her first pregnancy so he wasn't sure how to act. What would be expected of him? He was still trying to get the hang of being a father to Eridanus. How in Merlin's name was he supposed to raise two children?
Hermione returned with a healer in tow.
"Well, Mr. Black, let me just check you over." The young medi-witch ran some diagnostic spells, checking various things. When she finished, she turned to the couple. "Your vitals look good, sir, but I suggest you stay here one more night. I would rather be one hundred percent sure you are healed."
Sirius nodded. "Thank you."
"If either of you need anything, be sure to let me know." The Healer left.
"I'm going to go check on Eridanus and bring him to come see you. I'm sure my parents are wondering how you are," Hermione said, glancing at Sirius. "Will you be all right?"
Sirius nodded. "I'll be just fine. I know Remus is actually stopping by in a little while. Go and change. I'll see you later."
"All right." Hermione gently kissed him on the lips. "Love you."
"And I, you," he replied, watching as she left once more.
Hermione appeared outside her childhood home with a pop. Walking up to the door, she knocked.
"Come in!" her mother called.
She entered the house, going into the kitchen. "Mum, it's me."
Amelia looked up from the couch. "Hermione, thank goodness! Is everything all right? We were so worried."
Eridanus looked up at the sound of his mother's voice. "Mummy!" he cried, waving his hands in the air.
Hermione immediately went to him, taking Eridanus into her arms. She sat down on the couch and pressed kisses all over his chubby face.
"Well?" Amelia pressed. "Is Sirius all right?"
Eridanus took a seat in Hermione's lap. "He was hurt pretty badly," Hermione responded. "But he's on the mend. I think he'll be released tomorrow."
"That's wonderful news. I feared the worse," Amelia admitted.
"It's a dangerous job," Hermione said, sighing. "But he loves his work, Mum, and I would never ask him to stop. He gets the most excited look in his eye when talking about his cases. Being an Auror is his world."
Amelia patted her daughter's hand. "I know, sweetheart. It's a dangerous job but someone's got to do it."
Hermione nodded. "Would you mind making some tea? I could really use some."
"Of course, dear," Amelia said. She moved into the kitchen to make the tea.
Alone with Eridanus, Hermione hugged her child tightly. "Daddy's okay," she whispered. "We'll go see him in a bit, yeah?"
"The water's on," Amelia said, taking a seat next to Hermione once more. "So, what is it?"
"What's what?" Hermione asked, looking up at her mother.
Amelia arched her brow. "Hermione Jean Granger, I know you inside and out. Something is bothering you, now, tell me what it is."
"I'm pregnant," Hermione whispered.
Silence filled the room. The only thing that could be heard was the sound of the ceiling fan. A sharp whistle filled the room.
"That'll be the tea," Amelia said, standing up and leaving the room.
Hermione groaned. It seemed her mother wasn't too pleased with the news. What would her father say? He'd probably be angry as well.
Amelia returned moments later, setting two cups of tea on the table. Hermione reached forward, taking one of the cups.
"Don't be mad, Mum. It's unexpected, yes, but I knew I always wanted to have more children with Sirius," Hermione said firmly. She took a sip of her tea.
"I know that, darling, and I respect that. It's just, well; I always imagined that would be far off."
"Well, it's not," Hermione said. "There's not much I can do to change this situation. I love Sirius very much. I love Eridanus and I love this baby." Her hand came to rest on her abdomen. "I would really like your support with this, Mum."
Amelia sighed. "I know, sweetheart, and you have my support."
"Thanks, Mum," Hermione said, giving her mother an appreciative look. After finishing her tea, she stood. "I'm going to go take Eridanus to see Sirius."
"Would you like me to come?"
"No, I'm all right," Hermione said. "We'll stop by in a few days."
Amelia hugged Hermione tightly. "Let me know if you need anything."
"Thank you," Hermione said. "Love you, Mum."
"Love you too, Hermione." Amelia watched as Hermione and Eridanus disappeared into thin air. She shook her head, wondering how she would break the news to her husband.
