Chapter 17
"Ginny, come on," Hermione said, turning bright red. She tried to tug Ginny along, but the redhead wouldn't budge. "People are staring."
Jane smirked. "Come on, Hermione, it's not every day a witch gets to see Muggle London."
Hermione sighed. "I know, but she's causes a scene."
The three of them had ventured into Muggle London to go shopping for baby furniture, clothes, and other supplies. As they had entered the department store, Ginny had noticed there was a small machine that dispersed hand sanitizer when one ran their hand under it. She had immediately become interested, running her hand under it multiple times. Since they were in the doorway of the store, the three of them had gained quite an audience.
"This is so cool, Hermione! Have you seen this?" Ginny asked, running her hand under the sanitizer dispenser once more. "It's like magic," she whispered.
Hermione couldn't take it anymore. "Merlin, Ginny, come on! We don't have all day and I don't want anyone to call the police."
Ginny turned to her, a confused expression on her face. "Why would someone call the police?"
Hermione took her arm and dragged her into the store. "Because you were just staring there with a fixed fascination on something that's every day for Muggles. That's not normal, Gin. People might have thought you were unwell."
"Unwell?" Ginny hissed. "I feel just fine!"
Jane laughed. "She's means psychologically, dear. People might have thought you were a bit… slow."
Ginny's face turned red. "Those horrid Muggles! How can they think such things?"
Hermione and Jane laughed. "It's just how the Muggle world is," Jane explained. "People are very judgmental."
"Well, shame on them," Ginny hissed.
Hermione shook her head. "All right, you two, we can here for baby supplies. We might as well get started."
"Lead the way," Ginny said, an excited smile on her face replacing the frown she just had.
"Come on, the baby department is this way," Jane said, leading the two girls to the next floor.
As they traveled up the escalator, Ginny almost caused another scene. Hermione quickly stopped her, promising to explain it later when they weren't surrounded by Muggles. Ginny grumbled something under her breath but agreed.
"Well, why don't we pick out some clothes first?" Hermione suggested.
"All right, but don't buy too much! A lot of people will buy you things for your baby shower," Jane explained.
Hermione sent her mother a glare. "I don't have many friends, Mum, in case you haven't noticed."
"Well, be as that may, you do have two aunts and Ginny. And Angelina. And your wonderful mother," Jane said, a mischievous smile on her face. "So don't you worry. Angelina has everything covered."
Ginny grinned. "I agree with you, Mrs. Granger."
"Call me Jane, darling," she replied. "But let's get some clothes. You should get various sizes because some babies are born so big they won't fit into newborn sizes."
Hermione cringed, rubbing her bump. "Let's hope not."
Jane laughed. "Don't worry, dear, I'm sure childbirth is much easier in the wizarding world than it is in ours."
Ginny cringed. "I wouldn't be so sure."
"Anyways," Hermione said with a huff, wanting to change the subject as soon as possible. "Let's look at these clothes."
The three of them started to peruse the racks and Hermione couldn't help but smile. They were so many cute clothes and outfits that she couldn't help but wait for her little girl to be born.
"Hermione, look at this little dress!" Ginny cried, holding up a small pink dress that had ruffles all over it. "It's so cute!"
Hermione grinned. "That's adorable."
Ginny put the dress back and continued to look through the clothes. "Oh, I can't wait for my little niece to be born. Aunt Ginny is going to spoil her."
Jane laughed. "Not as much as Grammy will."
Hermione sent Ginny a stern look. "Ginny, my baby is not a dress up doll," Hermione warned her.
"Yeah, yeah," Ginny mumbled with a wave of her hand. "Now come on, let's get some clothes."
Hermione collapsed into a chair, breathing heavily.
"You all right?" Jane asked worriedly.
"Fine," Hermione replied. "It's been awhile since I've done that much walking."
The three of them had decided to stop at a café for dinner after they had finished their shopping. They had had a very successful day.
Hermione had picked out a crib and some matching furniture for the baby's room. Clothes, diapers, and other supplies were also picked up. While Hermione had fun, she couldn't help but feel incredibly anxious about the entire experience.
Shopping for her baby had made everything feel even more real and that frightened her. She couldn't help but feel like she was going to be an awful mother. Everyone assured her otherwise but she was still frightened.
Her baby would be born and she would be a mother. There was no escaping the situation.
"Hermione?" Ginny pressed worriedly. "Are you sure you're all right."
"Fine," Hermione replied, snapping out of her negative thoughts.
"Okay. You had spaced out for a moment or two there and I was sort of worried."
Hermione frowned. "I'm sorry. I don't mean to worry you both."
"It's all right, dear," Jane said, gently patting Hermione's hand. "I understand. The whole situation is nerve wracking and sometimes you feel overwhelmed."
Hermione nodded. "That's it exactly."
"You'll adjust. The first few nights you'll be very confused, but trust me, it's normal," Jane explained. "When your father and I brought you home, we both just sat down and stared at you. We didn't know where to begin!" she said with a laugh. "But you'll just know. Gut instinct will kick in and you'll be a pro in no time."
Hermione smiled at her mother's words of encouragement. "Thanks, Mum."
"And we'll help you, Hermione," Ginny said. "I'm sorry I wasn't here from the beginning, but I'm here now, and I plan on doing my best to help you."
"A lot of people care about you and Percy; you'll receive the help you need, darling," Jane said.
Hermione smiled, a few tears sliding down her face. "Thank you. Thank you both so much."
Jane smiled. "Now, why don't we get something to eat? I'm starving."
