Harry led Ron and Hermione into an empty classroom and sat down while Ron and Hermione took seats facing him. “Okay, I can't tell you much just yet, because it’s going to take me some time to figure out what exactly to say and how much to tell you. I can tell you that what I’m doing is not dangerous to me, and this isn’t the last time I’ll be called on to go on a mission. You’ll just have to be okay with that.” He said.
Hermione pursed her lips. “You can’t tell us much, or you won’t tell us much?” She pressed.Harry groaned. “Trust you to make that distinction. If I could find a way to tell you right now, I would, trust me. But I need to talk to Dumbledore first and figure out exactly how to word it. It’s a bit of an unusual situation, and I’m not sure how to explain things without it sounding really bad. And it’s not that bad, really. At least, I don’t think it is.”Ron shrugged. “If you need some time, I’m fine with it. You’ll tell us when you’re ready.” He said.Hermione sighed. “I wish you didn’t need to think about how to tell us, because that means it must be something big. But if it’s nothing dangerous, that’s at least something good. If it means that much to you to tell us a certain way, I suppose I can give you the time you need to find out what that way is.”Harry smiled at them both. “Thank you. I’ll tell you soon, I promise.” He told them.Hermione nodded. “I know you will. Now, let’s get back to the common room. We have a lot of homework to do, we should get started immediately.”Ron groaned and Harry smiled. At least some things never changed.*****Harry stood in front of the gargoyle, glaring at it. He’d just tried fifteen different sweets in an attempt to figure out the password, to no avail. “Can’t you just let him know I need to talk to him?! It’s really important!”After a few more minutes of glaring, he was admitted. “Thank you.” He spat to the gargoyle.“Harry, my dear boy, what brings you here today?” Dumbledore asked, beaming at him.Harry sat in the chair he’d come to regard as ‘his’ chair and sighed. “I need help in figuring out how much, and how full stop, to tell Ron and Hermione about Draco. Should I just tell them everything? Or should there be parts I leave out?”Dumbledore steepled his fingers. “You make a good point, my dear boy. I believe it would indeed be unwise to reveal everything regarding the spell. Namely, you and Draco’s lack of feelings toward each other. Let them believe that this is a love match, and it may be easier for them to accept it. Of course, you’ll need Draco’s consent for this ruse, but I should think that wouldn’t be too hard to procure.” He said calmly.Harry nodded. “Right. Hermione’s bound to find out that it’s a love-based spell anyway, so having her believe we’re in love from the first is all to the good.”Dumbledore inclined his head. “Ms. Granger is indeed a clever witch, and telling her that you don’t feel romantically inclined toward Draco with this spell in place would surely cause alarm with her. She’d also be less likely to believe you capable of harming Draco, however unintentionally, if she is under the impression that you two are together.”Harry sighed, but nodded in agreement. “So just a small lie.” He said softly.“It is a necessary untruth, Harry. I wish it were not the best way, but it is.” Dumbledore said. “As for how to tell them, the best way is usually the simplest: Just tell them, the way you would anything else. Take them aside and explain the situation, in a well-warded room, mind you, so that any reaction they may have, Mr. Weasley’s especially, will be contained away from prying—and extendable—ears.” He said, the twinkle creeping back into his eyes.Harry snorted. “Merlin forbid someone employ those things against me.” He said in amusement.“I’ve found them to be quite prevalent in the school of late. I have several of them here, as a matter of fact.” He pulled out a mass of ears and string from a drawer on his desk. “Mr. Filch has been confiscating them left and right.”Harry laughed. “Well, that explains the healthy rumor mill at Hogwarts lately!”Dumbledore chuckled. “That it does, my boy, that it does!”“Well, I’m going to head to the Room of Requirement for a bit to chat with Draco and get his agreement for the rest of the plan.” Harry decided.“Here.” Dumbledore wrote him a pass. “In case you miss curfew. Try to be quick.” He said.“I will.” Harry promised, and left.*****Harry slipped into the Room of Requirement and saw Draco, reading his charms book. “Hey.” He said.Draco didn’t look up. “Missed me, or what?” He asked, then met Harry’s eyes, grinning.Harry laughed. “Not quite. Actually, I just came from talking with Dumbledore, and he had an idea.”Draco raised a brow. “What idea would this be, exactly?” He asked.“Well, I’m going to tell Ron and Hermione about you tomorrow—““So soon?” Draco asked.“Yeah. I don’t like keeping secrets from them. But Dumbledore thinks it would be a good idea to let them believe we’re in love, and I agree.” He finished.Draco opened his mouth to respond, but Harry rushed on.“I know we’re not, but Hermione’s bound to research the spell into the ground, and the only way she’ll accept it is if we pretend we are. Otherwise, she’ll want to know how we got it to take, and she’ll hound us until we explain the situation we were in earlier, and she really won’t like it. At all.” He explained. “Plus, she’ll probably believe I’m mistreating you unless she thinks we’re in love.”Draco raised a brow. “Can you lie that well, Potter? Ow, Harry.”Harry sighed. “Yeah, don’t call me that.”“Noted.” Draco drawled. “But, really, can you lie that well?” He pressed.Harry smirked. “I think I can.” He walked over to Draco. “Besides, we have actions that can give that impression.” He said, punctuating that statement with a fierce kiss, all tongues and teeth and lust.Draco moaned.Harry broke the kiss and winked. “I think we can pull it off.”Draco snorted. “I’ll thank you not to kiss me like that in front of the—“ He stopped at the hard glare from Harry. “In front of Weasley and Granger.” He amended.“Good save. But, yeah, I think a lighter kiss should do it, just to show them that we’re comfortable around each other. They are going to want to meet you, you know.” Harry pointed out. “And it’s important to me that you learn to get along with them. After all, this spell is permanent, and I refuse to cut them out of my life, so you’ll be seeing rather a lot of them in the future.”Draco nodded. “Well, I’m a great liar, so I think we’ll be able to do this, provided you can hold up your end. Was that all?” He asked.“Yeah, that was it.” Harry grinned. “I’ve got to get going, now. I’ll see you later!” He said, then hurried out of the room and back toward Gryffindor Tower.Draco stared at the door for long minutes after he left, wondering when he’d begun to feel affection for Harry. Because now, after seeing him again, he couldn’t continue to deny that it was there. He actually liked the bloody prat.‘Ow, right, the wonderful man.’ He amended, and the headache eased up. He sighed. It was going to be a long two weeks before he’d see him again.*****Harry sighed at he pushed some eggs around on his plate. So now he knew what he was going to tell Hermione and Ron. It was just a matter of when he had left to decide.‘No time like the present.’ He thought, realizing that the longer he put it off, the harder it would be. ‘Better to do it sooner, so I can stop worrying over their reactions, and not have to lie weekend after next, when I go back.’Right. So after class, it was.*****Harry led Hermione and Ron to an unused classroom and warded the door heavily, then sat down in a desk.Hermione and Ron sat in desks in front of him.Harry sighed. “So, I’ve been thinking about how to tell you this, and I talked to Dumbledore about it, and…”Hermione raised a brow. “You’ve decided to just come out and say it like you always do?” She asked.Harry flushed. “That’s about it, but you probably won’t like it much. It’s nothing dangerous, really. Do you remember when Draco Malfoy disappeared?” He asked.Hermione nodded. “Yes, and your mission started that very day. Do you mean the two are related?” She asked.Ron grimaced. “Tell me the ferret’s not on our side now.” He said with obvious distaste.Harry sighed. “Don’t call him that. And yes, he is. But it’s more than that. He needed a way to get out of joining the Death Eaters, and he came to me for help with that. He found a spell that would allow him to cut his blood ties to free him from his father’s expectations in order to serve someone else. And he chose me for that.”Hermione frowned. “Serve? What do you mean?”Harry hid a wince, knowing that this was going to be the part that got the worst reaction. “He’s my slave, now.” He said softly.“What?!” Ron shouted, jumping up. “What the bloody fuck do you mean by that?! Do you seriously trust that he’s telling the truth?”Harry sighed. “Yes, Ron, I do. We didn’t know exactly what we were getting into in the beginning, but we’ve got things pretty much figured out now. He’s basically my property now, and I’ve found that I’m a bit protective. I trust him. He’s got no one else anymore.”Hermione was biting her lip. “Harry, when you say ‘slave,’ what do you mean?” She asked.“I mean it exactly as it sounds, ‘Mione. I can order him to do whatever I want, and he has to obey. I could order him to fight on our side, if I wanted. I’m not going to, but I could, and he would. He’d have no choice but to do as I say.” He finished.Hermione shook her head. “But that’s awful, Harry! How could you do that to another person? Slavery is illegal!”“Not this spell. This one is willing slavery, so it’s still legal. He had to really want it for it to take. And it did. He’s perfectly happy being owned by me. He knows that it’s better than he’d have it under Voldemort’s control.” Harry told her.“He’s just using you.” Ron spat.Harry sighed. “How do you figure that, when I’m in the position of control here?”“He’s a Slytherin, Harry. It’s what they do!” Ron shouted.“Slytherin is not evil, Ron. It’s a house at Hogwarts, nothing more. If you can’t see past it, maybe I’m giving you too much credit.” Harry snapped.Ron gaped at him.Hermione sighed. “Ron, Harry’s right. Maybe we do need to give Malfoy a fair chance. Obviously, Harry knows him better than we do, now. If he trusts him, the least we could do is give him the benefit of the doubt.” She said.“But he’s a Slytherin. Death-Eater-in-training. Harry, you hated Malfoy!” Ron said.Harry sighed. “I did, and I was wrong. I’ve seen the person he really is now, and he’s not all that bad. Can you give him a second chance? For me?”Hermione nodded. “I’m willing to. What was the name of the slavery spell you used?” She asked.“Amore Schiavo.” Harry answered.Hermione frowned. “Doesn’t ‘Amore’ mean love in Italian?” She asked.Harry chuckled. “Yeah, it does. And… Well, he’s different now. I’ve seen a side of him I’ve never seen before.”Hermione pursed her lips. “I have to say, Harry, I really don’t approve of this at all. Slavery is abhorrent, and to think that you’d put someone in that position willingly-““It was his idea!” Harry protested.“Still, it’s wrong. I’ll reserve judgment, for now. But if I think, after seeing how he acts around you, that you’re mistreating him, we’re going to have a very long talk about this situation.” She said, pinning Harry with an intent stare.Harry nodded. “I hope so. I don’t want to end up like Voldemort, or worse. At least I know you’ll keep me in line regarding Draco.”“Why should we care how Harry’s treating him? With all the things he’s done to us, I’d say he deserves it.” Ron groused.“This is exactly what I was hoping to avoid.” Harry said. “Ron, if you can’t be civil even when he’s not here, why should I let you be around him?”Ron gaped at him. “You can’t be serious!” He fumed.“I am. I won’t let you be around him if you’re going to act like this. It’s the least I can do for him, after he’s made himself so vulnerable to me.” Harry said firmly.Hermione nodded in approval.Ron gaped for a moment, then shut his mouth and scowled. “Fine, I’ll be civil to him. I suppose he’s already been taken down a few pegs, what with being your slave, and all.” He groused.“He’s given up everything, Ron. He’s cut his blood ties to his family, he’s been disowned, he even had to hand over control over his very magic to me. If I don’t want him to perform a spell, he can’t do it. This is real life, Ron. It’s not just fun and games. I’m not the kind of person to take something like this for granted.” Harry said wearily. “Just promise me you won’t make this any harder on him than it already is.”Ron sighed. “I promise, Harry.” He said.Harry smiled at him. “Thank you, Ron. Really.”Hermione smiled warmly at Harry. “So far, it looks like you’re going about things the right way. Maybe things aren’t as bad as they sounded at first. I’ll wait and see.” She said, standing and walking over to Harry. “So when can we see him?”Harry smiled. “I was thinking maybe this Sunday, for lunch? You could meet us in the Room of Requirement, that’s where he’s been staying.” He said.Hermione nodded. “That sounds fine. Ron, are you willing to meet with him, and see how things go?”“I suppose.” Ron said.Hermione smiled at him. “I’m going to look up this ‘Amore Schiavo’ spell, Harry. Do you know which book it’s in?” She asked.Harry grinned. “I can’t exactly remember the title of it, as I was a bit more preoccupied with the particulars of the spell we were working toward the few times I read it, sorry.”Hermione just nodded. “I figured as much. Well, it sounds like a love-based binding, so I’ll start there.”Ron made a strangled sound. “Love-based? Harry, tell me you haven’t fallen for the git!” He pleaded.Harry took a deep breath, looked into Ron’s pleading blue eyes, and said firmly, “I can’t do that, Ron.”Ron looked pained. “You- But- Ginny!” He finally declared. “What about Ginny?”Harry blinked. This one, he could answer honestly, at least. “Ron, Ginny’s like a sister to me. I’m quite gay, and very not interested in her, even if I liked girls.”Ron closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “Fine.” He said, opening his eyes again. “But you’d better let her down easy, understand?” He asked, eyes boring into Harry’s.Harry nodded. “I’ll do my best, Ron. I’d never want to hurt her.”“I’m going to go back to the common room.” Ron said.“No, you’re coming to the library with me.” Hermione said firmly. “You need some quiet time to cool off, so don’t argue.” She finished, pulling him bodily from the classroom.Harry just sat there for long moments after they left, contemplating the dust motes dancing about him. ‘Well, I did it. And they’re still my friends.’It was a bit of a hollow victory, due to the lie he had told, but at this point, he’d take what he could get.‘Time to tell Draco to expect guests this weekend.’While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
