We go shopping the next day and I find the airplane I want for Mr. Weasley. We look all over for something for Mrs. Weasley and settle for an at home spa kit and I pick one up for Hermione too.
When we get back to my place I start packing stuff. “When are we leaving? How long will I be there?” I’m starting to freak out a little. I know I’ve already met his family, but this is a holiday.
“Well, the Portkey will leave in about 3 hours.”
“WHAT?!” I spin and look at him. “You didn’t tell me that. I’m not ready. What do I need to take?” I run to my room and grab a bag. “When do I come back?!” I yell to him.
“Tomorrow evening.” he sounds very calm. I go out to look at him and he’s lying on the couch with Snow on his chest. My cat is a traitor.
“UGH!” I go to my room and pack a nice outfit to wear for tomorrow. Sensible night clothes, and some toiletries. Then I jump in the shower and scrub well and put a bit of make up on. I dress in something else that is presentable to wear in front of his family and finally call myself ready. I wrap the gifts for Hermione, Mrs. Weasley, and Mr. Weasley and realize I don’t have anything for Charlie. I could never get anything as incredible as the bracelet but I had bought him a few different dragon things but nothing serious, little knickknacks and a really cute stuffed dragon. I had already put them in the mail. I hope that he wouldn’t be too disappointed with me.
I filled Snow’s dishes and called myself ready. Charlie was sitting on the couch looking at the coffee table, I noticed he had a two handled mug that didn’t look familiar at all.
He looked up at me. “You ready?”
“Um… I guess?”
He chuckled and took my bags. “You will hold one handle of the mug and I’ll hold the other…”
“Wait, that’s a Portkey?” I interrupted.
“Anything can be turned into a Portkey, this happens to be ours. So we’ll each hold a handle. It will start to glow, DO NOT LET GO. And then we’re gone.”
I look at him and I know my eyes are wide with concern and fear. He reaches over and kisses me. “It will be fine. I promise.”
I nod at him. I can do this. I’ve traveled though a fireplace for god’s sake. I can be sucked into oblivion by a mug, what’s the big deal. I think I’m going to puke.
“Ok, Grab it. We have about 45 seconds.’ he’s staring at his watch.
He’s got my bags and is holding the mug in one hand. I grab the other handle and stare at him. He smiles at me and then there is blackness. Oh my god. This is horrid, worse than the floo.
Suddenly I’m sprawled on the ground with my face in the dirt. I look up and see the Burrow. Why in the hell can’t I show up here without being covered in dirt!? Charlie helps me up and cleans me off.
“You ok?”
“Yeah. That’s what you are going to do come see me? Everytime? Twice?”
He chuckles at me again and grabs the mug off the ground and wraps an arm around me as we head to the door. “Completely worth it.” he says.
The smell of baking greets us as we open the door. I can hear music playing but other than that it’s quiet.
“MUM!” Charlie yells and I jump a mile.
“Oh Charlie dear! You’re here.” She comes bustling in drying her hands on an apron. “OH GINA, you’re here too. How wonderful!
‘I thought they knew I was coming.” I say to him.
“Oh, dear we didn’t know if you’d make it, what with the mess with the Minsitry. I’m so glad you’re here. Happy Christmas.” She hugs me and gives me a kiss on the cheek. “Come in, come in.. ARTHUR! Charlie and Gina are here.”
Mr. Weasley comes in and shakes my hand. “Good to see you again.”
“Hi Mr. Weasley.”
“Into the kitchen with you. Are you hungry?”
“No mum, we ate at Gina’s.”
“Really? Do you cook Gina.”
“Yes ma’am. I can cook and bake. I wouldn’t be able to open a restaurant, but it’s not bad.”
She looks at me for a minute, smiles and then nods like something has been decided. “Would you like any help Mrs. Weasley. I’m sure anything I can do would be slower than what you do, but I’m willing to do what I can.
I help bake bread while Charlie and Mr. Weasley go to the living room. Mrs. Weasley tells me stories about her kids when they were younger. The challenges of raising Fred and George and everything that Ron, Harry, and Hermione have done. This family is incredible, they seem like normal people, with the exception of the magic. But underneath they are some of the bravest people I’ve ever met. I start to feel like I don’t deserve to be there.
“I heard you were here, working like a house elf no less.” I smile before I turn to see George leaning against the door jam. “Don’t just sit there, give us a hug.”
I get up and give him a hug. He squeezes me tightly, like he really had missed me. “I’m so glad you waited for him.” he whispers in my ear. I pull back and look at him. He shushes me before I can ask about that comment and goes to his mom for a hug.
I’m left standing there wondering what he was talking about.
“Oh I’ll be right back. I need to ask Arthur something.” Mrs. Weasley says, almost absently mindedly.
“George, what are you talking about?” I whisper.
“Six months is a long time. He’s been in a right state for all of them. Even with the letters he was worried that you would move on. I’m not sure what happened between you two, but it seems to be strong. When he finally got a Portkey I think he may have cried. There wasn’t enough time to warn you he was coming so he was worried about what he would find.”
“He found me talking to my cat.”
George laughs as Charlie walks in. “What are you laughing about?”
“That dear brother is between Gina and me.” He gives me a huge conspiratorial wink and I let out a short laugh.
Not much later we go to bed. I get Ginny’s room while Charlie and George take George’s old room. I figure I’ll never sleep, but I find that I do. I feel a comfort spread through me that I’ve missed and I drift to sleep.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“HAPPY CHRISTMAS!!”
The door of the room I’m in bangs open and George is in the room followed by Charlie who is trying to pull him back out.
I sit up and rub my eyes. “Merry Christmas.” I saw and smile at the guys in the doorway. They really are beautiful.
“Come on, get up. Mum’s making breakfast and everyone will start showing up soon.” George calls over his shoulder as he leaves the room and heads down the stairs.
“Hey.” I say to Charlie. “Merry Christmas.”
“Happy Christmas.” we look at each other for a while. “I’ll let you get dressed. See you down stairs.”
After I get dressed and get downstairs I tell Charlie I’d like to give his parents their gifts before everyone else gets there. He gathers his parent and I go to the tree to get the gifts. I jump back and let out a small scream.
“What’s wrong?” Everyone comes running in.
“I’m sorry, the lights. They’re…” I lean closer. “They’re…”
“Fairies.” George fills in for me.
“I’m never going to get used to this.” I whisper to a fairy that starts posing and sparking for me. I smile at her and turn back to the Weasleys.
“Sorry about that. I was caught off guard. I wanted to give you your gifts before everyone else came.”
I hand them their gift with protests and “You didn’t have tos”. Mrs. Weasley opened hers and I explained that they were the muggle equivalent to potions and they were for relaxation and pampering. She opened different jars to smell them.
“It’s lovely, thank you. And if I do say so myself, I quite deserve a bit of pampering.” She shot a look at her boys and I giggled.
Mr. Weasley opened his gift and he stared at it for a long time.
“You can’t ride in it, but you can control it. I brought extra batteries.” He looked at me wide eyed and open mouthed.
“This is incredible.” he whispered. “Molly dear, do you mind if I give it a go before everyone gets here?” Mrs. Weasley pursed her lips and looked at him.
“I’ll help with anything that needs done.” I volunteer.
“Very well Arthur.” she shakes her head, but smiles.
I help with dinner and people start to show up. Ron and Hermione come first and I give her her gift. She gives me a huge hug and thanks me.
“I’m so glad you are here. We were all so worried about how everything had gone.” she told me.
Bill and Fleur arrive next. Fleur comes to the kitchen and Bill and Ron go to the yard where we can hear the guys whooping and laughing.
Ginny arrives and give me a tight smile. I don’t know how we’re going to get along but I don’t really care. Percy and Penelope come seconds after Ginny. They are all very polite.
I hear another whoosh in the fire place and I get excited. Harry and Draco. They are the only ones not here. I walk to the living room and see Harry step out of the fireplace closely followed by Draco. I smile as I see them, they don’t see me right away as Hermione is hugging them. Draco sees me first and he looks shocked.
“Gina. I had no idea you’d be here.” He gives me a hug and squeezes me just like George did. I’m starting to believe that they really do like me.
I laugh, “I didn’t know either until last night.” He hugs me again and whispers to me.
“I’m so glad that this worked out.”
I pull back. “George said something similar to me. What has been going on?”
“For the last 6 months Charlie has been alternating between depression and a kind of manic fever to get to you. We’ve been worried about him but since he works in Romania it’s hard for us to check on him. He contacts George, Harry and me more than anyone else, I’m assuming because we’ve spent more time with you.
Just then Harry walks up, “Gina, I’m surprised to see you, glad but surprised.” He too gives me a hug.
“Alright everyone, breakfast!” Mrs. Weasley calls from the kitchen.
We cram around the table and again I’m hit with a feeling of longing for family. Mr. Weasley talks nonstop about the airplane and I grin, glad that he liked the gift. People are talking over one another and reaching across each other, laughter and playful punches. It’s the best Christmas I’ve had in a long time.
After everyone is done eating and Mrs. Weasley magics the dishes off the table Charlie gets everyone’s attention.
“I have an announcement to make.” He says loudly. Everyone stops talking and looks at him. “As many of you, if not all of you, know the last 6 months have been difficult for me. I can’t explain the depth of what I feel for Gina, but it’s there.” I blush as everyone looks at me. “I had tried to give this long distance thing a go and it didn’t work. Not for lack of trying. Gina, for whatever reason stuck with me through muggle letters. That in itself is quite painful. I showed up at her place a few days ago quite unannounced and not knowing what kind of greeting I would receive. It was everything I could have wished for.” George lets out a wolf whistle. Everyone laughs and I blush even more. Charlie takes a deep breath and looks at everyone in turn then looks straight at me. “Gina, if it’s ok with you. I’ve gotten a job with the American Magical government working with branch for the Regulation and Conrol of Magical Creatures. I will be moving there. I’d be living about an hour away from you with a couple of other wizards.”
The kitchen falls completely silent. Everyone is staring at Charlie while he stares at me. After a moment I hear George whisper “Brilliant.” and Draco whisper “Excellent.”
“I know it’s sudden. I didn’t tell any of you because I thought you’d try to talk me out of it and I didn’t know if it would work out so I didn’t want to have to go through more discussions than I needed to. Gina, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you but I think I had gotten both of our hopes up before and honestly I didn’t know how you’d react. I can always refuse the job but it’s mine if I want it.”
No everyone looks at me. “Charlie…”
“Why don’t you two go for a walk?” Mrs. Weasley suggests.
“I forgot a coat.” I say, stupidly, stupidly but it’s the first thing that comes to my mind.
“You can borrow my cloak. Go on.” She pats my hand
George shows up next to me and fastens the cloak around me. I just stare at him. Draco is over his shoulder. They are both smiling. “Just listen to him, please.” Draco says and George nods in agreement.
Charlie is waiting for me at the door and I head toward him. He doesn’t take my hand but stuffs his in his pockets as we get outside. I see a gnome run across our path and I don’t even react. We walk for a ways before Charlie speaks.
“I am pretty sure I went about that wrong. I seem to do that a lot when it comes to you.”
“I’m just shocked. Why would you do that? Why would you want to leave my family?” The idea is crazy to me.
“I don’t want to leave my family, but I want to be with you more than I don’t want to leave them. Does that make sense?”
“Not in the slightest. You’re family is incredible.”
“But if I work for the government I will have access to Portkeys and be able to come visit them more easily than I’ve been able to get to you.”
“Do you really want this Charlie? You’d give up working with dragons and seeing your family as often as you do? I can’t ask you to do that.”
“You’ve not asked me to do anything. If you had I might not be so keen on it. But you’ve been so patient and accepting and I can’t stop thinking about you. I want this, but I won’t do it without your approval.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A week after I return to school from break I’m helping Charlie shop for things he’s going to need for his new place. He did it. He moved here to be with me. It’s hard to balance the muggle and magical worlds but we are working on it. We see each other every weekend and once during the week. He’s met my friends and they love him. I’ve pulled my pictures out of the night stand and put them in frames. I’m happier than I should be and I grin like a fool most times but I’m happy and Snow is still a traitor.
