Chapter 16
“That smells great,” Sirius told Molly, peering over her shoulder as she cooked. It was the day Hank was coming over to eat and he was checking to make sure all was attended to. He then added, grinning, “Thanks for bringing everyone over for the cleaning party. Remus and I were going to tend to it, but we were putting it off as long as we could manage.”
“You're welcome and thanks,” Molly told him with a smile, stirring the gravy. “It's the least all of us can do. We're all aware just what he did and I had plenty of offers to help.”“Quite thankful there,” Sirius chuckled, shaking his head. “We can do fine, of course, but you do better.” Looking around at all the food, he grinned when his stomach growled at the delicious smell. “I think I'm going to enjoy this as much as he will,” he admitted.“It sounds like it,” Molly admitted, smiling bigger. “Nothing fancy here, warning you now, but some good food. I'm sure you'll both like it. Pulled out what I know most like. Dessert is in the larder with some other bits which need served cold. You'll have plenty.”“Didn't want anything fancy, just a good home cooked meal since I know he doesn't have those much, if at all,” Sirius told her, looking around at what all she had fixed. He knew there was a nice roast in the over with all the trimmings, something which smelled delicious. There was also her famous fried chicken. Yeah, it would be a huge spread and he would enjoy it as much as Hank!“Are you certain you'll be fine, Sirius?” Arthur asked as he set the table. “I do understand what he's done and how he saved you, but he is a shady one.”“It’ll be fine, trust me,” Sirius assured him. “I know what I'm dealing with and he won't cause problems. Hell, we have plenty of those with Dung and his sticky fingers, not to mention he wants to use the place to store his stolen whatever. Hank isn't that way.” Then, with a sigh, he said, “He's all about money, I know this and it's quite clear. However, he won't help the other side, something he's made just as clear. From what he's said, I doubt any amount of money could persuade him to help them. He's just a true gray when it comes to so much. While some of what he deals with is frowned upon, it's not illegal. One of the bits he made clear to me was he won't deal in anything illegal. This is one we don't have to worry about.”He then added, “I think it can help plenty. We all know a little trust goes a long way when it comes to some people. If I show him I do trust him to an extent, I'm sure it'll be most helpful.”While Arthur wasn't convinced, especially with what he had seen of the bird the man had, he understood what Sirius was going for and nodded. With a sigh, he said, “If you need help, don't hesitate to contact us.”“I will keep that in mind, but it won't be needed,” Sirius assured him with a shake of his head. “Just trust me; I know what I'm doing here.”“I'm sticking close and will pop in,” Remus assured the man. “Nothing to worry about.” Since he knew some bits the others didn't, like Sirius having had a couple dates with Hank, he wasn't as concerned as everyone else. He understood why they were, of course, and figured it would just take time for them to settle down and relax on the topic.Molly wasn't adding anything to the discussion, but she paid close attention while she cooked. When it was apparent they were done with that topic, she began walking Sirius through some small bits which needed done with the food when she left. It wasn't anything major and he could handle it, but it would make the meal taste far better for both of them. While she, too, had some doubts about Hank, she would trust Sirius' judgment on the topic.
Like the other times going out with Sirius, Hank was taking great pains to make sure he looked his best. He was actually more uptight about this outing than the others. The reason was a simple one; he hadn't done this before, so he wasn't sure what to expect, beyond the basics he'd heard about or seen on the telly here and there.
Since this was just dinner at Sirius' home, he was going with casual wear. From what he knew of the man, he doubted it would be something formal or to where there was a dress code. Sirius seemed like he was a lot like himself in that he just wanted to be comfortable with whatever. So, he was going with black jeans, black boots, a black t-shirt and his standard leather jacket, though he was wearing the duster this time since he wouldn't be leaving the coat on.As he prepared, he told Yama, “This'll be a first for us. Not sure about you, but I have a tad bit of the nerves going as we've not had dinner at someone's place before. Sure it'll be fine, of course, but just a newness bit. Sirius said his friend Remus will probably pop in. We're good there. The bloke seems fine. If he's attached to Sirius and is close, I will give him the benefit of the doubt with plenty. I’m sure Sirius has a reason for it, will just wait to see what it is.”When Yama hissed in his normal way, Hank nodded. “We’ll be fine,” he reiterated as he checked himself in the mirror once more, rolling his eyes as it cooed at him, vowing to replace it soon. Then he told his companion, “Going to catch the Knight Bus and get dropped off a couple blocks from the park he talked about. Since you're coming with me, I’m not going to Apparate. Just keep an eye out for anyone wonky on the bus.” When Yama clicked his beak and gave his normal hiss for agreement, Hank nodded.“This is good, don't you think?” Hank asked the bird, stepping back when he finished. From the looks Sirius gave him when he wore the other similar outfits, he was sure the man would like this one as well. Of course, Yama gave his approval like normal. Hank then nodded and told his companion, “I think we're good then. I’ll take the normal, of course, but I doubt we'll need it.”He then tugged everything into place and said, “You might want to change a bit so we don't draw attention to ourselves, then we'll get going. Neither of us likes the Knight Bus, like most, but it's better than Apparating. I'd rather not wait alone in the park for you as I'm sure the wrong side of the war knows just where that house is, even if it's protected. No chance I want seen there as it would cause us more problems than it's worth.”Feathers ruffling, Yama gave a hiss to agree then changed into the normal crow-looking bird before coming over to perch on Hank's shoulder. After settling down, he waited. After another glance in the mirror to make sure he looked his best, gut fluttering a bit in excitement from what was coming, Hank nodded to himself. This was as good as it was going to get, so he better get going. He was actually excited and looking forward to this in a way he hadn't with anything before. It was strange, but he liked it.“Let's do this,” he told Yama. When the bird hissed in agreement, he gave one last glance at himself in the mirror then headed out. He didn't want to show up late after all.
Hank wasn't the only one excited about the dinner. Sirius, too, had that flutter in his gut as he waited in the park for his guest to show up. Of course, to stay safe, he was Disillusioned just in case those they were wary of were close. He didn't want to put himself in danger over this, that's for damned sure! Pacing a bit to alleviate the nervousness, he waited, wondering how Hank was going to arrive.
Sirius paced around, making sure he remembered all he had to do. Everyone was out of the house and the word went out not to come over tonight. Remus would pop in when he finished dinner with Tonks, but it wouldn't be for long. The house was cleaned, and the food on the table with the standard heating charms on it. As far as he knew, he was ready.Just as Sirius thought he was going to go mental from the waiting, he about jumped out of his shoes when there was a loud bang. As anyone would expect, his wand was then out and he was ready for whatever, heart hammering. He relaxed when he saw the distinctive purple of the Knight Bus pulling away and Hank walking in the direction of the park. Lowering his wand, he canceled the Disillusion spell and waited, heart still going madly, but for a different reason. As was normal by now, he took in everything about Hank and gave a soft groan since the man wasn't close. Yeah, he looked great once again. The Muggle clothes—he sure as hell appreciated how good they could make someone look thanks to Hank. Bloody hell, he liked those clothes on that body! While he paid close attention to Hank coming towards him, he also kept an eye out for anyone else around. It wouldn’t do to end up blindsided by those who followed the evil arse. With Yama keeping an eye on what was going on around them, Hank didn't have to focus there. Instead, he honed in on Sirius, pleased he was meeting them. He also glanced around to try and figure out which house was Sirius'. Mostly it was flats which were blaring loud music and looked like they had seen better days.“Come on, dinner is waiting,” Sirius told him, putting a hand on his shoulder. Then he handed over a slip of paper to let him in on the secret. “Read and memorize it otherwise you can't get through the wards.”Now Hank understood; he couldn't see the house because it was under a Fidelius. Taking the paper, he read and memorized what it said before vanishing it. Looking across the street, he saw the townhouse squeeze itself out from in between the other two flats and nodded. While he wouldn't ever use or sell the knowledge he just gained, he appreciated being one of the few in the world who knew this secret and could get in through the wards. “It's a big house, isn't it?” He observed as they moved towards it.“Yeah. A bit much for just me, but, as I said before, was left to me. Perfect for what we need it for since my father put on every protection a paranoid Pureblood could come up with and then some.” Sirius explained. When they reached the door, he stopped and said, “Keep your voice down. If you don't, it'll set my Mother's painting off. Trust me, you don't want to deal with it if you don't have to.”“Understood,” Hank agreed. He'd run across a few paintings like that over his time and didn't want to have to deal with one if he didn't have to.After opening the door, Sirius guided Hank in. He planned to give him a bit of a tour before settling down. Though he sure as hell wanted to introduce him to his bedroom, he wouldn't this time. No, he wouldn't be that blunt about it. After all, he didn't want Hank thinking he was doing this just to get him in the sack like Lucius would. It could wait. Since it seemed like it was going in that direction anyway, he'd let it lead itself there and he'd follow along. Plenty of time for that part later.
“That was damned good,” Hank said, leaning back in his chair with a sated groan. “One of the best meals I've ever had,” he then admitted. It was the truth, too. He ate quite well since leaving school, and at some very expensive places, but this meal was far better though not posh like some of those were.
“Molly is the best cook in the world,” Sirius told him with a smile. “She's Fred and George's mother. Trust me; she knows what she's doing.”“It was great,” Hank smiled, watching Yama still going to town on his plate full of food. “Yama agrees apparently,” he then chuckled. “He's not known for eating this much human food.”“Yeah, he likes it,” Sirius grinned watching the bird. Then he asked, curious, “What is his normal food? I know what I've seen him eat, of course, but not sure what else he does.”“He eats about anything, but his favorite is rats,” Hank told him. Then with a snort and grin, he added, “And he doesn't lack for food because of that, trust me.”“Nope, plenty around,” Sirius agreed with a laugh. After sending their empty plates to the sink and the leftovers to the larder, he said, summoning both of them a fresh beer, “Remus will probably pop in soon. Nothing to worry about there. My thought was to let you get used to him so if you can't get in touch with me when something big happens, you can reach him. He's good, trust me. After all, he's friends with me and just as bad in plenty of ways.”“I'm good with it,” Hank nodded, understanding Sirius' motivation for this. “He seems like a good bloke.”“He is,” Sirius agreed. “Always was. He's just quiet about the trouble he gets up to. After all, he was friends with me and James, so he was into his share of up to no good for years.”With a chuckle, Hank shook his head, but didn't comment.“How long are you going to stay in the UK?” Sirius asked, not only making conversation, but curious about the matter anyway. “You said you planned to stay for a bit.”“My thought was to stick around until it looks like the Wizarding version of Armageddon is happening,” Hank told him, sipping his excellent beer. As this wasn't huge news, he didn't have a problem talking about it. “You're not there yet, so I'm good. Plan to stay put until it comes down to either the evil git looking like he's about to take power completely or all hell breaks loose. Then I'll probably just hop to the continent for a time. Not going back to the States until a very nasty situation there settles itself. I doubt that's coming anytime soon, unfortunately.”“What's going on there?” Sirius asked, curious. He hadn't heard of anything too bad, though the States always had problems of one sort or another with violent whatever. They were rather known for it because of their laws and how they differed.Hank thought over how to word what he wanted to say or if he wanted to at all. Then he finally explained, deciding it couldn't hurt. “Some associates of mine, ones I used as suppliers, decided to go completely off their nut then on some kind of crime spree. And not a minor one. From what I've heard so far and read in papers from the States, they're looking at the death penalty for it. There is very little doubt they pulled this stunt, so they're in real trouble. As they're known associates of mine and I don't deal with the law unless I'm forced to, I’m not going back until it settles down. I make sure everything I do stays on the right side of the law, but some of it is frowned upon. Would rather not deal with the law for anything. Old habit from school and other areas,” he explained, shaking his head.“Ouch,” Sirius winced. While he didn't understand the whole situation, he didn't have to. It was something he could easily understand as he heard from Remus how he had been looked at plenty after the whole mess with Peter. While Remus hadn't done anything, he was questioned over it because of their friendship. “Yeah, best to stay out of those messes if you can.”“I plan to,” Hank told him honestly. “It's on their own heads. They pulled the stunts and went off their nuts, they can pay the price. If I had known they had a potions problem, something it sounds like was the driving force behind this, I would have cut them loose long ago. It's not like they were close friends or anything, just suppliers and people I went to school with.”“If they have a problem like that, it's best to let them hit bottom on their own,” Sirius sighed, having seen more than a few with that particular problem in the past. “Especially if you're not close.”“They've hit it on their own,” Hank shrugged. “The States doesn't play with some of this and will sentence you to death then carry it out. They are facing it and there is little they can do to help themselves. Not getting dragged into their mess. And there's no shot in hell I'm helping them. It isn't like I have anything that could, honestly.”Because of how Sirius viewed some things thanks to his time in Azkaban, he winced a bit at Hank's cold attitude over the situation, though he didn't know the details, but he could understand it. People like the ones he described just dragged you down with them. “I can see why,” he admitted. Then to add some levity to the talk, he chuckled and said, “To avoid the mess there, you dropped yourself into a place which is just short of all out war. Not sure which is worse, Hank!”“This is far better, trust me,” Hank told him with a grin, sipping his beer. “I know what I'm doing with this sort of mess and how to keep myself safe. Would rather deal with this situation than the mess back home.”“Rather like having you here myself. And not for just the passing of information,” Sirius told him honestly with a smile.“Thanks,” Hank said, a little stunned by what was said, but liking it was. It made him smile just a bit. He then added, “Rather like it myself, honestly.”“Good,” Sirius told him truthfully. “Curious to see where it goes in some areas and I think I would regret it if I didn't let it happen.”“Same here,” Hank admitted, smiling a little bigger. Yeah, he liked this. A lot. More than he cared to admit.Sirius was about to press on when he heard the door open. Knowing it would be Remus, he straightened up and summoned a beer for his old friend. He then told Hank, “Just Remus. He won't stay.”Though disappointed the mood was broken, Hank nodded. Hopefully the bloke wouldn't stay long and they could press on again.
At about midnight, their normal parting time for when they went out, Hank was finally readying himself to leave. It was an outing he adored and thought he would like to do again. In fact, he thought it might be nice to have Sirius over to his pace. If the man trusted him enough to allow him into the heavily protected Order headquarters, he could do the same. Besides, being with Sirius was like having a true friend for the first time. He rather liked it, though it wasn't something he ever thought of as a goal of any sort.
After putting his duster on, Hank said, not believing he was going to offer, “Next time—let's do this at my place. I don't cook, but my elf is damned good. We'll have a great meal out of it.”Unable to help himself, Sirius grinned at what was said then he nodded. “I'd like that. Going out is great, will put that out there, but it's better for relaxing when you're somewhere you don't have to worry about watching out for yourself.” While he was still fighting the urge to offer to show Hank his bedroom and have him stay the night, he kept himself from doing so. He wouldn't allow himself to become that tactless about the whole bit. However, he did offer, “Let me ride the Knight Bus with you. Will make sure you get home okay. I know you can protect yourself, but the other side knows where this house is. If they're around, we won't always see them. Don't want them catching you off-guard.” Oh, those were legit reasons, of course, but it was more to just spend time with Hank.“Sounds good,” Hank told him, smiling again. It wasn't like he needed to ride the bus since he could Apparate himself there and Yama would arrive in just a few minutes, but he'd go with it.Yeah, Sirius liked he had accepted, so he pressed on, “If you ever need to come over or the next time, you can just Apparate onto the front steps. That's what we do most of the time. Yama knows where it is, so he can just fly.” Then he began leading Hank to the front door. “If I remember right, you're not far off, though it's too far to walk.”“I'm not far from the Leaky,” Hank told him honestly, smiling still as they left, Yama on his shoulder to keep an eye out for the both of them. Yeah, he adored this, more than he ever thought he would.
For the first time in his life, Hank let someone through the warding on his house. Oh, he only had Sirius come to the front steps, but it was through most of the warding. While nervous about this as it was something he never did, he was going with it. After a glance at the door, he said, “This is it. Home, such as it is.”
“Rather nice,” Sirius said, taking in the front of the house with a nod. It was very nice and clean without being foreboding the way Grimmauld Place was. He then smiled and said, “You're next, so pick a date and let me know so I can schedule around it.”“I’ll come up with something,” Hank assured him, smiling again. He would, too, as he loved these dates and wanted them to continue.Sirius stepped closer and put a hand on the back of Hank's head then kissed him, holding him close.Arm slipping around Sirius and holding him close, Hank leaned into the kiss, adoring it. Yeah, he had wanted this most of the night, though he wasn't about to say anything.Sirius broke the kiss off soon, not wanting to end up getting too passionate about it since it was the end of the night and they weren't going to press on. Looking into those green eyes, he noticed they weren't nearly as cold and hard as normal. In fact, they had softened up and he loved the way they looked. “Wanted to do this all night, but didn't want you thinking I had you over just for the physical part.”“Rather wanted it myself,” Hank admitted with a chuckle. “Liked the other though, honestly.”“So did I,” Sirius agreed with a nod and smile. He then kissed him again, though quickly, and backed away, even though he didn't want to. “I better get going. Send me an owl so we can set up the next time.” With a nod after Hank assured him he would, Sirius then Apparated away.Hank stood there and looked at the place Sirius had been, still smiling. He then told Yama, who had stayed on his shoulder the whole time and kept quiet, “Rather like where this is going, though it's odd. Just make sure you tell me if you sense something wonky.”When the bird hissed like normal and began to groom his hair, Hank, smiled a little bigger. Tearing his eyes away from where Sirius had been, he then unlocked the front door. While he could go out and gather whatever, he didn't want to. He thought tonight was a good night just to stay in and relax. Besides, he had to talk to Deweezle about setting up the dinner since he didn't have the first clue how to go about such matters.Humming to himself, he made his way inside. Maybe, if this kept going, he wouldn't be leaving the UK for the foreseeable future, even if it did end up the worst case scenario. He'd have to wait and see there.
A.N.- This is the final chapter I have already written, so it'll now go into it's place in the roation of stories
