Chapter 17
Alexandra’s POV
After my father left, Severus made his way back inside. For a minute I thought he was going to bring up the subject of my being an elemental up again, even tough I had just proven that I was one. He surprised me however, by asking me to the Halloween dance, as his date.
I didn’t think about it, but just agreed to go with him. ‘Do you think we’re going to need a costume?’ I wanted to know, it hadn’t been said that it was a costumed party. I honestly couldn’t see Severus dress up, he didn’t seem like the type. ‘I guess I could ask Malfoy as he’s helping to organise it.’ He said. ‘That way we might be able to shop for a costume in Hogsmade next weekend.’
I winced when he mentioned Malfoy, although he had been kind to me earlier, I couldn’t help but dislike him. He’d been too cruel to me when we were children, once he’d locked me in the dungeons of Malfoy manor, and refused to let me out. Luckily one of the other boys had gone up to my father, and alerted him. I had always been glad that Lucius ignored me as much as possible while at school.
Severus pulled me out of my reverie ‘So Black apologised to me’ he said. My jaw dropped, I had never imagined that Sirius would actually do it. ‘Alex, close your mouth, it’s unbecoming.’ I did as he said, I could tell he was annoyed. ‘Sorry, I’m just surprised that he would do that.’ I told him.
‘Are you? Because he told me it was the only way that you would forgive him, he’d do anything for you.’ So he told Severus about the deal we made. ‘I don’t need anyone’s pity Alex’ he said.
So that was why he was annoyed? He thought I pitied him? Just because I had gotten Sirius to apologise?
‘Why on earth would I pity you?’ I asked him. Sure I knew his home situation was bad, I knew he had an abusive father, a mother who wouldn’t stand up for him, I knew they were poor, his mother cut of from her wealthy family for marrying a muggle. ‘I could think of a million reasons why someone like you would pity me’. It hurt that he thought so little of me. When he said someone like you, the anger I had been successfully surprising all day long surfaced. ‘What do you mean someone like me?’ I demanded to know. ‘Do you think just because my family is rich that I think myself above others? Do you think that rich people have a better life? That it is easier than being poor because there is more money, higher expectations, more rules to live by?’
‘I do feel sorry for you Severus, but not for the reason you might imagine.’ He had remained silent throughout my ranting, but did raise an eyebrow now. He probably knew better than to interrupt me, or start shouting back at me, which was what Sirius would have done. ‘I feel sorry that you are incapable to accept kindness from others.’ With that I crossed my arms and turned away from him, making it clear that the conversation was over.
We sat like that for what seemed like a long time, I was still fuming that he thought that I pitied him because of his home situation. Sure, it was regrettable, but he made the best of a bad situation, and I could only admire him for it. Also it wasn’t his fault that his mother had fallen from grace by her marriage with Mr. Snape. My father had promised to introduce me to Madam Prince, Severus’ grandmother, at the Malfoy engagement party. I had told him I wanted to meet her, in reality I wanted to have a chat with her about her daughter and grandson. I hoped that she and I could come to some sort of arrangement when it came to Severus.
If Severus was going to be like this on any occasion when a person showed him kindness, I wasn’t sure anymore that I should talk to his grandmother. Maybe it was best left alone, but then again, wouldn’t I be as bad as his family?
I didn’t want to be the first one to break the silence so I continued to look the other way, hoping that he would see the light, and know that my intentions were good.
‘Alex’ he started, I turned my head to look at him in what I hoped was an indifferent expression.
The door of the hospital wing was forcefully opened, Sirius entered again. For some reason he was angry, the way he was looking at me resembled the one right before he struck me with that curse. My heart sped up, and my hand involuntary reached for Severus’ wand, my own being out of reach.
I’d never been so afraid for what he would do as in that moment. He looked like he was about to kill me. ‘I just had a talk with your father’ he announced, his voice shook with restrained anger. I had no idea where he was going with this. What could my father have told him that could anger him? I felt Severus taking his wand out of my hand, clearly he knew what this was about. ‘I wanted to ask his permission to take you to the Malfoy ball.’ Oh dear, I realised where this was going. ‘Your father told me that, of all the people you could have gone with, it’s MY BROTHER that you decided to accept?’ The vase on my bedside table exploded.
