They were both deep in their work when the door chimed once again a few centars {hours} later. "Enter," came the distracted call, not even looking up from his computer.
The door slid open. "Hadrain. Roark."
"Captain Ardyn," Harry said as he ordered up a series of legal incoming and outgoing shipping lanes, viewing them with a frown, and then swore sharply. "Rory," his head came up, turned, "I think he's using the dead shipping lanes."
Roark quickly saved what he had been working on, keyed in the demand for the dead, no longer used shipping lanes, then pulled up the legal ones, and watched his screen fill. "Fuck," he breathed in dismay as he looked at them. "There are an awful lot of them, Harry."
Aren't there, though? This is going to take time to go through, trying to figure out which ones he's actually using,"
A nod. "If he's not using them all," he told him, earning a groan from his brother that made him grin.
"It's late, boys," he said, hazel eyes moving back and forth between them as they continued to work.
"Is it?" came coolly, both still refusing to look at him, though he did see their smirks after both made quick glances to the corners of their computer screens. "Ah...so it is. How about that? We hadn't noticed. Time flies when you're having fun, as the saying goes."
"I'm sure you didn't. Do you intend to work all night?"
Roark picked up a pen, pulled a pad of paper closer to him, and began to write. "As long as it takes us to get the answers to the questions we have," he replied. "Harry, I think we may want to look into the dead land routes as well."
'Hum..." Harry reached for his own pad of paper, grabbed a pen, and began to write as well. "Agreed. If he's been using the dead shipping lanes, it's a safe bet he'd use the land routes too."
"I'm not going to let you work all night, boys."
"THAT, Captain, is not your call. It's not up to you what we do, or don't do, for that matter. If Roark and I choose to work all night, we will."
"Look," he began, exasperation clear in his tone, "there's plenty of time for you to find whatever it is you're looking for."
"Very true, and as it happens, we weren't planning to work much longer. We are, in fact, due to meet up with Logan, Fili, and Kili at Logan's as soon as we finish this. Harry, you done?"
"Will be in a moment," came his reply as he typed quickly.
"Has he told you where he moved to?"
"Of course. Why?"
"Because he hasn't toldanyone, other than his cousin's where he went, nor has he changed his on-file address in the Base's computer."
"I can't imagine why. Unless that is, he doesn't trust any of you," Roark looked up finally, a dark brow raised. "Why wouldn't he trust you, Ardyn? Any of you?"
"Are you deliberately going out of your way to be unpleasant, Roark?"
"Not at all, Ardyn. I'm just following the lead you've set," his lips quirked suddenly, turning his head. "Hey, Harry. did you notice he didn't answer my question?"
"I did, little brother. Wonder why that is?" he looked over at Ardyn, a brow arched.
"I have absolutely no idea why Logan wouldn't trust me. Trust US. You'd have to ask him."
"Don't you worry," he said with a cool smile, "we intend to do just that. Now that I think about it, Fili and Kili don't seem to trust you either."
There was a flash of...something in his hazel eyes, but it was quickly hidden as he sighed, shaking his head. "Roark, listen, I just don't think--"
"DON'T," he snapped out harshly, saving, then downloading all his current work to an external hard drive, which, once it was finished, he removed and put into an inner pocket of his uniform jacket. "Don't you DARE try to make excuses for your behavior, Captain," came coldly as he next deleted all his work from the computer. "The way I was treated today by you and Lt. Tristyn is nothing new." Once that was done, he shut the computer down, got to his feet, and began to put his notes, as well as the file into order. "I have handled it before, I will do so again."
"NOT, mind you, that he should have too. You would think that people would learn that he never would have made it through the Academy if he wasn't capable of handling what this job entails. Neither would I, for that matter." The download to the external complete, he removed it and placed it in an inner pocket of his jacket, erasing all work on his computer, then putting his own notes into some semblance of order.
Getting to his feet, he went over to the couch where the bags sat and picked them up. "Ready when you are, Rory."
Picking up the file and his notes, he moved around the desk, switching off the lamp as he went. As he came even with Ardyn, he paused, looking up into hazel eyes. "You know," came softly, "I just never expected to get such treatment from you. You, who knew what our dreams were...what our plans for ourselves were. You, we thought, would understand, and despite my age...OUR ages, accept us." He gave a shrug, his eyes dropping away. moving to the door, where Harry waited.
As the door slid open with a slight hiss, he paused, but didn't look back. "You've changed, Ardyn, and as far as I can see, it's not a very good change. You are not the man who left Caprica eight yahren {year} ago. This will teach me to never assume anything about anyone ever again. Goodnight, Captain."
He walked out. Harry started to follow, but paused. "When," he began, looking at him, "will you idiot's learn?" he asked, then left the office, the door sliding closed behind him.
He never saw the look on Ardyn's face, nor did he hear him swear sharply. He also did not hear the sound of something shattering as it was thrown against a wall.
