    ***************************************************************************

Albus’ sparkling clear blue eyes widened over the parchment. He placed it down on his desk, hands shaking slightly as he did so. Minerva watched him from the other side, sitting on the edge of her squashy chintz armchair.

“Albus? Are you okay? What’s wrong? What’s the letter about?” Minerva asked frantically, her eyes sweeping his face in search of an answer “Be “Believe me, nothing bad has happened, not bad in the least. It seems that our very own Lialani Turowsky has awakened after nearly a week in a coma!” Albus exclaimed happily.

“Oh, thank goodness!” Minerva cried ecstatically. “Severus will be very pleased to hear this.”

“He must know immediately,” Albus agreed and dunked his hand in a bowl on his desk. When he withdrew it, in his fist he clenched a handful of glittering powder. He threw it in the fire and as the flames rushed to fill the entire berth of the fireplace, he shouted, “Severus Snape’s quarters!”

Severus started, looking up. He spotted Albus’ head spinning wildly amongst the emerald flames.

“Severus, I have good news for you!”

Severus didn’t even flinch. He had been waiting for a full week to hear the only news he wished to hear and he no longer bothered to hope.

“What is it, Albus? I’m very busy at the moment and I do not want to be disturbed,” Severus said impatiently.

“Well, I’m sorry,” Albus replied, looking a bit put-off. “But if you don’t want to hear what I have to say then it can wait.” A twinkle appeared in his piercing blue eyes.

“Thank you.” And without another word, Severus turned back to his work.

Albus smiled, thinking that it would be a much better surprise if Lialani came in to tell him herself.

“Oh, dear, it seems that I’ve something to do now,” Albus responded, winking and pulling out of the fireplace.

Severus heaved a grateful sigh. He looked back at the hearth, the fire crackling calmly and back to it’s original bright pumpkin colour. Thoughts were whizzing through his mind. He shook his head to clear the fog that seemed to have settled on him since Albus’ interruption. A stray thought crossed his mind.

he wondered, fiddling with his quill. After a moments’ contemplation, he threw down the quill and stormed into his bedroom.

He pulled his robe off roughly, tossing it carelessly onto the handsomely carved cherry oak wardrobe. Joining it quickly was his starched white button-up shirt.

Another part of his mind nagged him.

A fierce growl escaped his throat as he clenched his fists.

Angrily he stalked into the bathroom and turned on his whirlpool tub. His black trousers puddled on the floor, followed by his black silk boxers. He sank into the steaming water, letting it wash over his head as he submerged.

Suddenly, he shot up in the tub, sending waves of the steamy water sloshing over the sides. Water droplets went flying as he shook his head wildly, trying to dispel the horrible images that suddenly flooded his mind. Images of Lialani, bloody and mangled, being dumped on the ground in front of a sacred altar as he stood by watching helplessly. This was the Dark Lord’s plan for her. The Dark Lord was going to perform a sacred ceremony that would extract her powers and bestow them upon him. When the ceremony was over, too much of what was Lialani would be gone and she would die.

screamed the voice inside his head.

Maybe he shouldn’t have gotten involved with her. He should have just stayed away from everyone and not brought anyone into his life. He’d already been through this pain before.

Pictures of his mother and father flashed before his tightly closed eyes. Memories of the happy life he had once had attacked his mind, causing him to grip the edges of the tub until his knuckles turned milk-white. The tinkling sound of happy children laughing reached his ears. But the laughter turned to screams as a memory replayed itself in his mind’s eye.

    *flashback*

“Mummy, when do we get to eat cake?” A chubby, raven haired little boy pulled on a motherly-looking woman’s skirt, causing her to roll her eyes with exasperation and say, “Soon, Severus, darling, soon!”

The child’s hand fell away and he ran off to play with the other frolicking children. She watched him, a happy smile playing on her full, lustrous lips. This woman was truly content with simply watching her only son play happily. The sun filtered through the tall oak trees, the falling rays reflecting off the small sweaty faces of the children hard at their game. However, this joyous occasion was not to last long.

Shrill shrieks ripped through the air as black hooded figures appeared in a circle around the children, capturing them all in the middle. Severus’ mother screamed and tried to run to the children but one of the figures grabbed her from behind and held her snugly against him.

“Shhhhh, don’t fight me,” he whispered softly in her ear. “Which of these lovely children is yours?” he asked, gesturing to the huddle of the young ones.

Immediately, her mouth clamped shut. She refused to say anything.

“Well, I can mend that,” the masked man hissed. He pulled out his wand and pointed it at her temple. “Imperio!”

Instantly, her eyes emptied of all emotions and her arms fell limply to her sides.

“Now, tell your child to come here,” he commanded.

“Severus, darling, come to Mummy,” she called out obediently.

The small boy ran toward her, complete love and trust in his eyes. She knelt down and pulled him into her arms, lifting him up and balancing him on her hip.

“Tell the children to be quiet.”

“Shhhhh, children, quiet down. I won’t let anything happen to you.”

Silence reigned in the backyard as fast as the men had first appeared. The kids looked up at her, the same trust in young Severus’ eyes mirrored in all their faces.

Inside her head, the little voice that still belonged to her echoed in the emptiness. The look on the children’s faces was tearing her apart. They trusted her and she was about to betray them.

“Now, children, I want you to sit on the ground and not say anything. Mrs. Snape will sit with you to make you comfortable,” the man announced. Instantly, Mrs. Snape sat down on the ground with the rest of the kids, settling the frightened boy in her lap. he the terrified young ones watched with shock as the man tore his mask off. Malfoy Senior stood there, tall and proud, surveying the scene in front of him. His son let out a sob.

“Lucius, why are you crying?” he asked angrily.

“Daddy, what are you doing? Why are you being so mean to us?”

“This is something that needs to be done,” Malfoy replied. “One of you, take Severus and make sure he doesn’t get loose. Someone else grab his mother.”

Two men complied immediately. As he was wrenched from his mother, Severus began to scream, kicking his small legs and flailing his arms. With a muttered spell from his captor, he was bound and wriggling on the plush, rich grass. His mother was yanked to her feet and pushed to the front of the crowd of children.

“Now, watch, children, this is a very good lesson for all of you,” Malfoy announced. “This is what happens when you do not pay a very large debt to a very good friend.” He pointed his wand at Severus’ mother. “Crucio!”

Severus let out a terrified, high-pitched shriek as he watched his mother scream and twitch with the pain that flowed through her very veins. She fell to the ground and began to convulse.

“Tell me, children, should I stop the pain?” Malfoy asked, smiling cruelly.

“Yes, yes, make it stop!” sobbed a terrified little girl.

“Alright, if you say so,” Malfoy sneered. “Avada Kedava!”

There was a flash of green light and a sudden silence. Severus looked at his mother’s still form and a sudden panic grasped him.

“Mummy, get up!” Severus shrieked shrilly. “Mummy!”

    She didn’t move.

    *end flashback*

Severus shook his head frantically to clear the last shreds of the memory. Those were the kind of things that happened to people he cares about and now it was going to happen to Lialani.

    -----------------

“Where is she?” he roared, sending stacks of parchment flying off the end of his desk.

“I’m sorry, my Lord, but she has not returned from the hospital,” Draco replied.

“Why is she in the hospital?”

“When my father and I held that fool Dumbledore hostage in his office, she was brought in as a means to get him out and us killed. She blew up the entire room. Father and I dodged the falling rock and jumped out the window to get away. She, alas, was not as lucky as we were. A piece of the crumbling rock fell on her. Father and I fell to the ground and escaped.”

    “What is wrong with her?”

“She is in a coma as we speak. Apparently, she has Shuddon Syndrome.”

    “Her body is shutting down?”

“Yes, but she is being cured.”

“Good. She should be out soon. I will not tolerate another failure, Draco.”

“Of course, my Lord. I will not be defeated.”

“Very good. Now, leave me be.”

“Yes, my Lord.” Draco bowed his way out of the room.

Voldemort sat at his desk, rubbing his temples with long, thin fingers. This was taking too long. He needed the Magnesius before the full moon, which was in three days. The ceremony must be completed that night or he was going to have to wait until the next full moon, and he did not want to have to wait that long. That was too long to have the girl as his prisoner. He wanted to ruin Severus’ life in three days, not in three weeks.

Voldemort didn’t know why, but he was intensely jealous whenever one of his Death Eaters managed to get something better than he has had. Everything his Death Eaters had were because of him, the Dark Lord. Therefore, everything they get on their own must be his before it was theirs. Severus refused him when he told him this. This did not please the Dark Lord. So, he decided on the deadliest ceremony he could. When it was over, the girl would die, leaving Severus alone in the world. Suddenly, the Dark Lord thought of something. The girl’s daughter. He could not leave her alive. That was another person that threatened to take away Severus’ loyalty from himself. And Voldemort was not having that.

    -----------

“Severus?” Lialani looked around her dull hospital room, searching for him.

    Sirius cleared his throat.

“Hmm?” She spun her head around at the noise. As her eyes settled on him, recent events overtook her mind. “Sirius!”

“You do remember me. How are you feeling?”

    “Alright.”

“Now, what was that about Severus?” A hard glint crept into Sirius’ eyes.

“Oh, nothing. Just forget that I said anything.”

“Whatever.” His cold response startled her. What happened to the friendly Sirius she was acquainted with?

“Um, can you contact the school?”

“A nurse followed us in and did that when she saw you wake up.”

“Okay. Severus-” she stopped abruptly, looking at Sirius guiltily. Why was Severus the only one on her mind right now?

“Albus has been sent a letter telling him that you’re awake. And with Albus, he should be here any minute-”

Albus strode into the room, cutting off the end of Sirius’ sentence. Lialani looked at him and her guilty expression changed to one of happiness.

“Oh, can I go home now?” she asked excitedly. She threw back her blankets and swung her legs around to the side of the bed but Albus stopped her, freezing her right where she was with a wave of his wand.

“No, you must wait until they check you over. They have to make sure that you are completely cured,” Albus replied, and lifted the spell.

She plunged back into motion, the added momentum sending her tumbling straight off the bed and onto the floor. She lay there, legs sprawled, until Sirius stepped forward and helped her up. He lifted her clean off the floor and her feet and settled her on them. A grateful expression passed over her face and she thanked him. He nodded in return.

“Sirius Black!” Albus cried merrily, just noticing the man’s presence.

“The one and only,” Sirius responded, his usual grin coming back full force.

“How are you back? When did this happen?”

“I brought him back,” Lialani interrupted.

Albus smiled knowingly. “Ah, it seems that the last of your powers has finally come into the light.”

She looked up at him, puzzled.

“You see, my dear, we found traces of the very last Magnesius power in you back in your fourth year. However, it was very deeply hidden and we could not unearth it. We simply assumed that it would surface of it’s own accord. And indeed it has.”

“But what is it?” she asked.

“You have the ability to travel into the spirit realm and return with someone who has died. Someone who has not fully fulfilled his or her destiny and was taken too early.”

    “Like Sirius?”

    “Just like Sirius.”

“But what exactly is his destiny?”

“No one knows that except for him.”

Sirius’ eyes had clouded over and the grin had long since faded. Lialani didn’t like this change in him. When they were in the spirit realm, he had been so happy and friendly. He seemed to be filled to the rim with troubles and worries now. It was almost as if as soon as he entered the mortal world all his worries had been dumped back on him. From the look on Sirius’ face, he didn’t like this development one bit.

“Albus, why did I have to come back?” he asked, clenching his fists.

“You apparently had some unfinished business,” Albus replied, eyes sobering as he took in the young man.

“But what is it? I don’t have anything left to do. I was happy there, Albus! All my worries and fears were gone. Harry had a chance when I was there!”

    “Sirius, what do you mean?

“The only reason that night in the Department of Mysteries happened was because of me. If Harry hadn’t been tricked into believing that I was in trouble, he wouldn’t have gone there and he never would have been in such danger! That whole night happened because of me.”

“That’s not true, Sirius. Harry never should have gone there in the first place and he knows that. Everyday he beats himself up over the thought that he caused your death. It tears him up inside, believing that he killed you!”

Sirius fell silent at Albus’ words. It never occurred to him that Harry thought it was his entire fault. His eyes grew darker at the thought of all the pain he bestowed upon his beloved godson.

“Albus, I need to see him,” Sirius said wearily.

“Go now. But, please, don’t get in trouble. Change your appearance or change into Snuffles so you’re not recognized,” Albus pleaded, not ready to lose Sirius again so quickly.

“Of course.” Sirius nodded and waved his wand. Instantly he transformed back into the brown-haired man. With a wave and a slightly crackling sound, he Disapparated.

“What about me?” Lialani broke the thick silence that had fallen over them with Sirius’ disappearance.

“The nurse need to give you a check-up,” Albus replied softly.

    “Okay. And after that?”

    “That rest with the nurse.”

Almost as if she had heard them talking about her, Hazel popped her head into the doorway.

“Alright, Miss Turowsky, welcome back,” Hazel chirped merrily. “I just need to do a quick check-up and we’ll go from there.”

Lialani nodded and lay back against her pillows. Hazel ran her wand up and down the length of her body and leaned down to examine the results.

“Well, it seems, that you are in perfect condition. Your body may have taken a while, but it did a wonderful job,” Hazel reported cheerfully, tucking the papers safely into her pocket.

“Then can I go home?” Lialani asked impatiently.

    “Yes.” Hazel nodded firmly.

“Yay!” Lialani cried and leaped up from her bed. “I get to go home, I get to go home-” she sang, dancing around her bed.

“Calm down, Miss Turowsky. Sit down,” Albus ordered, and pointed to her bed. She obeyed instantly.

“Now you will need to pack your belongings and your mother and father must be contacted to sign the papers,” Albus said, ticking the points off on his finger.

Lialani nodded. She fetched the tote bag from the nightstand and simply started to shove the stuffed animals littering the bed inside.

“Hey, where did all these come from anyway?” she asked, holding up a particularly cute one. It was a kitten with a rather big head with a flower on one ear. She wore little pink overalls.

“Um, Severus sent those. He sent a few every day,” Albus replied. “What is that one?” He pointed to the cat in her hand.

“Oh, it’s from a Muggle cartoon. It’s called ‘Hello Kitty’,” Lialani answered. “It’s my absolute favorite! How did he know?”

“Your parents, probably,” Albus dismissed it with a wave of his hand. “Finish, my dear. We need to get going. Can you contact her parents?” he asked the nurse.

“We’ve already been contacted,” replied a deep, gruff voice from the doorway. Lialani’s father strode in. He was a big man, seeming to fill the entire room. He had deep brown eyes, probably where Lialani had gotten hers from, and his gorgeous red hair was thick and wavy. A few rust-colored ringlets brushed his forehead.

Behind him was undoubtedly her mother. She was a frail woman, very thin and her blonde hair cascaded down her back, reaching to her knees. Entrancing blue eyes sparkled beneath the blonde fringe that fell across her pale forehead. She wore no make-up, choosing the natural look. When you looked at her, you would assume that she was very soft-spoken and preferred to let her husband take control of everything, but when she opened her mouth, this image was cast away immediately.

“Hello, my name is Kelly Turowsky and this is my husband Thomas Turowsky,” she introduced, offering her small hand to Albus. Her voice was smooth and rich sounding.

Albus shook it, and was slightly surprised to find that she had a very firm grip. He let go of her hand, turning to shake Thomas’ hand. He winced lightly as Thomas grabbed his hand, nearly crushing it. Kelly smiled as Albus massaged his fingers when Thomas released them.

“Mummy!” Lialani cried, abandoning her stuffed animals and rushing to her mother. Kelly opened her arms wide and folded Lialani into her, stroking her hair softly. Albus was immediately reminded of when Lialani’s powers went off in the beginning of the year and Severus comforted her.

“Darling, how are you?” Kelly asked, letting go of Lialani and holding her out at arm’s length.

“I’m fine now that I’m all healed. Did you see my stuffed animals?” Lialani bubbled and scooped up an armful of the toys, breaking away out of Kelly’s grip.

“Yes, sweetheart, I did. Who sent them?” Kelly arched an eyebrow, waiting to see if she would tell the entire truth.

“Right, I haven’t gotten the chance to tell you guys yet…” Lialani trailed off, shifting her presents onto the bed and sitting down next to them. She took a deep breath and decided to plunge right in. “Mum, Dad, I’m getting married. And not to your favorite person in the world.”

Lialani recalled that time when her parents had been called into Hogwarts because of her behavior in Potions. She had been ‘rude, disrespectful, and defiant’ too many times for Severus’ taste and he wanted to end it. Therefore, her parents showed up, with a very angry Thomas and an amused Kelly. The interview started very well, Kelly took control as she usually does, and Thomas sat and glowered at Lialani. Severus did not lose his temper until the end when, to Lialani’s everlasting shock, Kelly lost hers. Severus merely suggested that maybe if they had been more strict with Lialani maybe she wouldn’t have such attitude problems, and Kecompcompletely took that the wrong way. She yelled, and then Severus yelled, and by the time it was over, Lialani was completely in tears and Kelly was on her feet, face red, yelling at Severus. Severus was shouting at Kelly, and in order to stop them, Lialani stood between the two and screamed. She didn’t scream any words, just screamed. Both shut up, staring at her as though she had grown another head. Tears streaming down her flushed face, she stood splay-legged with her arms stretched out to both sides in between them, eyes squeezed shut and lips tightened. When Kelly and Thomas were saying good-bye that evening, Kelly voiced her confusion towards her teenaged-daughter’s earlier breakdown. When asked to explain it, Lialani simply had this to say.

“I’ve never liked it when people argued, and to see my mum arguing with my professor really rubbed me the wrong way. Especially how loud it was.”

“But, sweetheart, I’ve argued with Professor McGonagall and you didn’t react like that. You cried some but you didn’t scream or do the leg thing.”

Lialani just shrugged, kissed them both good-bye, and sprinted up to the common room. That was the end of that discussion; they never talked about it again.

With a start, Lialani came crashing back into the present. Her parents stared at her, waiting for the rest of her confession.

“I’m engaged to Professor Snape.” She closed her eyes, expecting a major outburst from maybe her mother but definitely from her father, and was shocked to hear none.

“We know, dear. We talked when you were first brought here,” Kelly informed her stricken daughter.

“Really? Oh, so you know about Aglaia and who her father is.”

“We do. And that was a completely irresponsible and stupid thing to do!” Thomas shouted, losing his temper finally.

“Mr. Turowsky, your daughter, and my student, has just woken up from a weeklong coma and I would very much appreciate it if you did not raise your tone to her,” Albus interjected forcefully, laying a firm but soothing hand on Thomas’ shoulder.

He quieted immediately, shifting his gaze from Lialani to the floor. Kelly smiled softly at Lialani to let her know that she understood what had happened.

“You guys aren’t mad at me? You’ll accept Aglaia as your granddaughter?” Lialani asked uncertainly.

“Of course, Lialani! We would never abandon your daughter just because you had her at a very young age,” Kelly replied.

Lialani let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. That was a load off her mind and heart.

“Thanks, Mum. But what about you, Dad? Do I have your blessing for the marriage?”

Thomas looked up at her, and she could see the uncertainty and anger in his eyes. She winced, sure that the anger was going to win. Imagine her surprise when he grudgingly admitted, “You’re my daughter, and just because you’ve made a life-changing decision I’m not going to abandon you. I still think that you’re a little young to be married, hell, too young to be married but that choice apparently doesn’t rest with me, it rests with you, your mother and Professor Snape. But, yes, sweetheart, you have my blessing.”

“Oh, thank you, Daddy!” she cried and he grabbed her, hugging her and spinning her around.

When he put her back down on the floor, she collapsed on her bed.

“Miss Turowsky, I would like for you to finish packing your things. It would be in your best interest if we got you back to Hogwarts as soon as possible,” Albus said, handing her the bag half-stuffed with toys.

“Yes, Professor,” Lialani said and took the bag. She continued to shove animals into the pack.

“Mrs. and Mr. Turowsky, have you released her yet?”

“Yes, she can leave whenever she is ready.”

“Wonderful. She’ll be staying in the hospital wing until she is completely better, and that includes her amnesia.”

“Speaking of her amnesia, can she stay with us this weekend to get some family memories back?”

“You’ll have to speak with the rest of her professors, they were planning on doing some tutoring sessions to help her along with all that she’s missed.”

“We don’t want to interfere with any of her schooling, so we’ll try it another weekend.”

“Next weekend, Professor?” Lialani asked, pausing in her packing.

“I don’t know, Miss Turowsky, I really don’t know. We’ll just have to wait and figure it out then.”

    She nodded.

Ten minutes later, Albus was leading her out into the Muggle world. She was going back to Hogwarts!
