Chapter 18
Chapter 18
Draco lay in the bed he had shared with Harry and watched the dark haired wizard with Serena. She had only whimpered and Harry had jumped up and went over to care for her. He was amazed; his godfather had brought Harry to Snape manor until he could find somewhere safe for the Gryffindor. When he had seen him with the baby, and heard how Harry had gotten her, it changed his opinion of him.
The fact that he had called Severus instead of the nosy, Gryffindor loving headmaster was enough for him to respect Harry. He had known that he needed someone that he could trust, and he had trusted Severus. Somehow, Harry had known that Severus wouldn’t betray him.
“Why don’t you stop lying there, pretending to be asleep and come down to the kitchen with us,” Harry said from across the room.
Draco stretched and slid his legs over the side of the bed. “I was just thinking about you trusting Severus instead of Dumbledore,” he explained as he threw on clothes.
Harry smirked at him, “That was easy. I’ve been telling Dumbledore for years that I didn’t want to go back to my relatives, and he always sent me back. I knew that Severus would understand once I had explained everything to him, and that if he couldn’t help me he would know who could.”
Harry opened the door, waiting for Draco to pass through. On his way past Draco took the little girl from Harry and headed toward the stairs. “But if you hadn’t gone back this year, you never would have known about this little angel,” he said as he kissed the top of her head.
“Dudley would have never found out that he was a wizard either,” Harry told him as they descended the stairs. “I’m sort of glad that I went back there, if only for Dudley and Serena.”
Draco stopped at the bottom and looked up at Harry. “He gets his wand today, doesn’t he?”
Harry smiled and put his arm around the blonde’s waist. “Today is the first day of Dudley’s life as a wizard.”
The two walked toward the kitchen, taking turns kissing Serena.
Bill looked over at the young man standing next to him. He was going to get Dudley’s school supplies and wand, and then they were going to the ministry. He had to find out why he had never received his Hogwarts letter. Dudley’s awe grew with each stop, as he saw things that were so different from what he was used to. When Bill pulled him into the Magical Menagerie, he stopped in the doorway.
“What are we doing here?” he asked.
Bill laughed. “Harry told me to get you a pet. You’re allowed an owl, a cat or a toad,” he said. “So which would you like?”
Dudley looked around the shop, his eyes stopping on a beautiful white barn owl. “Could I have that?” he asked.
Bill looked at the bird. It was only slightly bigger than Hedwig, with the same coloring. Except for the eyes, his eyes were dark, almost black. “I don’t see why not,” he answered. They walked over to the counter, where an older witch was cleaning out a cage full of rats. “My companion here would like that white barn owl, a cage and some owl treats,” he told her.
She smiled at them, “He’s a right good bird,” she said as she turned to get a cage for him. “Belonged to my sister before she was killed by You-know-who.”
Dudley’s eyes got round and he turned toward Bill. “Isn’t he the one who was trying to kill Harry?” he asked.
The witch swung around and looked into Dudley’s eyes. “You wouldn’t be talking about Harry Potter, would you?”
Dudley smiled, “Yes, Harry is my cousin,” he told her proudly.
The witch grinned and continued to collect things for the owl. “His name is Opus, and he likes for you to scratch behind his ears,” she said as she bundled the bird into the cage. “He gets along well with other owls, something that you’ll need if you’re taking him to Hogwarts.”
Dudley couldn’t wipe the smile off of his face, “I’ll be going there in September,” he told her.
She handed him the cage over the counter along with a bag that contained his owl treats. “You just go on and take old Opus here. I can’t think of a better home for him than with Harry Potter’s cousin.”
Bill reached into his pocket for the galleons to pay her.
“No charge, After all Mr. Potter did for the wizarding world, it would be criminal for me to charge his cousin for a used owl.”
Dudley leaned forward and kissed the witch on the cheek. “Thank you.”
Bill left Dudley sitting in a nearby chair as he went through the books of students that had received or were supposed to receive a Hogwarts letter. It was easy enough for him to find the one he needed because he knew of most of the students that were going into seventh year. Once he had found the book, he had to figure out how it was arranged.
Amelia Bones, the woman that most of the wizarding world was supporting to take Fudge’s place as minister of magic came into the room. She spotted Bill and smiled as she walked over. “Mr. Weasley, what has brought you here?”
Bill smiled and pointed to the book. “It seems that Harry Potter’s cousin didn’t receive his Hogwarts letter, and he’s a wizard,” he told her.
She looked over at Dudley, “Can you do any magic?” she asked.
Dudley looked at Bill and then nodded his head. “Harry taught me two spells before I got my wand.”
She smiled. “Why don’t you show them to me,” she said.
Dudley pulled out his wand, 11 ½ inches, Maple with dragon heartstring, and pointed it at the book Bill was looking through. “Accio book.” The book flew off the table and into his hand. He looked at Bill in shock. “He showed me how to do it, but I didn’t think that it would ever work for me.”
Bill laughed. “What other spell did he teach you?”
Dudley put the book down on the chair next to him and raised his wand again. “Lumos.”
The tip of his wand lit up with an almost blinding light. “Nox.”
“Well,” she said. “Let’s find out why you didn’t get your Hogwarts letter.”
