Chapter 18
Solving the Riddle
"I wish I knew something else to tell you, but I cannot think of anything else. They began dating right after he left Hogwarts. From what I understand, she refused to date him while they were still at school. She was a very proper girl, and didn't get enjoyment from the jokes he and his friends pulled at school. I remember one afternoon she told him he needed to grow up if he were to ever date a girl like her."
"But they were kissing in that photograph. I assumed that they were a couple."
"No, they weren't. It just so happened that Remus stopped her on the way to dinner. He kept himself out of the doorway, but when James, Lily, and Sirius arrived, he made a scene and forced her to follow the rules."
"Gods Severus. I never knew you paid that close attention to people you hated."
"Well, we Slytherins have a very strict policy of knowing your enemies whereabouts at all times."
"I see."
Hermione placed the book down onto the table, and wrapped her arms around Severus. She sighed. "Well, love, what are you going to do?"
"I have no clue. I am still trying to figure out what she meant by my name."
"Well, I am sure it will come to you. Right now, why don't you take a warm bath, and we'll worry about telling Sirius tomorrow. You have had a very trying day, and I want you rested up. If the persistent thumping against my arm is any indication, this son of ours seems to be getting more and more restless. You never know when he will decide to grace us with his presence."
Severus stood, and led Hermione up the stairs. He helped her undress while he ran the bath for her, and lit a few candles to help her relax. He left her in the tub, and returned to their room to find something for her to put on. After quickly grabbing a soft flannel gown and slippers, he decided to take matters into his own hands and see if he could prove his hunch correctly.
He went down to the parlor, and gave Remus a firecall. "Lupin, Black, are you home?"
In a few short moments, Remus' head appeared from their bedroom. "Severus, is something wrong?"
"Dear Merlin, please tell me I wasn't interrupting a disgusting display of bestiality?" If anyone other than Severus had made that comment, Remus would have hexed them to no end. But he was used to Severus' scathing remarks about his relationship with Sirius. At least that was one constant he knew would never change.
"Actually, yes you were. Paddy is currently tied and gagged to the bed post if you must know." Remus laughed at Severus' pale face, and he knew that Remus was joking.
"I need to know if you'll be free tomorrow morning. Preferably around ten or so."
"Yes, I think that I'm free. Why? What's wrong?"
"Nothing is wrong, I've just got a few questions to ask you about something. I'll floo to Hogwarts, and you can meet me in my private chambers at ten."
"Okay, I'll be there at ten."
"Very well. Oh, and Remus—"
"Yes?"
"Do come alone. This concerns Sirius and Maddie." With that said, Severus ended the call, and left a very bewildered Remus to ponder what in the hell he wanted to know.

They ate breakfast in bed the following morning, and once Hermione was settled in with a few of Severus' yearbooks, he announced that he would be going to Hogwarts. Hermione immediately rose and wanted to go with him, but he insisted that she stay behind. "Hermione, you are exhausted. If I wouldn't have been watching you in the tub, you would have drowned when you fell asleep last night."
After his call to Remus, he had returned to check on her and found her asleep. He levitated her out of the tub, and placed her down onto the bed. After drying her off, he tucked her naked body into bed, and crawled in next to her. He paid no attention to it only being half past seven. They had had one hell of a day, and they both needed the rest.
"Alright Severus, you win. But if you see Sirius, you had better not tell him. I still want to do some researching before I ask him."
"I won't Hermione." He wasn't lying to her, but he still hadn't told her why exactly he was going to Hogwarts. As far as she knew, he had to finish some business to finalize their hiatus from school. "Hurry back. I'll probably go down to the parlor and read by the fire."
"Just be careful. Those steps can be tricky when you don't have the ability to fully control your balance." She acted offended, and began to pout.
"Are you saying that I am fat Severus?"
"Hermione, you know very well I am not saying you're fat. I'm only stating the obvious. You have an added weight that you are not accustomed to. You need to be very careful. That is all."
"I know Severus. I was only teasing you. I'll be careful. I can have one of the elves levitate me down if you'd like."
"Don't be ridiculous. Just be careful." He kissed her softly on the lips, and grabbed the floo powder. With a clearly spoken, "Hogwarts," Severus was gone and Hermione was alone. She browsed through Severus' third and fourth year books, and used a duplicating spell on all of the pictures of her mother. She thought about Sirius being her father, and realized that if her mother had fled to the muggle world to protect her, then Sirius was in danger at that time as well. It would have been right after he left Hogwarts when they started dating, and must have conceived her that January. Severus had told her that her grandparents were killed shortly after the Easter holiday, and by then, she should have known she was pregnant. She had no idea if Sirius knew Madeline had been pregnant, or if he knew that she wasn't killed during the ambush that took place on her home.
There were many questions that she wanted to get answered, but wasn't so sure she had the strength to ask them. Sirius was happy with Remus now, and they had made a good life together. She didn't want to destroy what they had fought so hard to work for. On the other hand, she cared deeply for the both of them, and didn't want to deceive them. Madeline had obviously meant quite a lot to Sirius, and if Hermione was their daughter, then Sirius would still have a piece of her to always remember. It was a never ending cycle in her head until she got such a headache that she couldn't think about it anymore.

Meanwhile, Severus had arrived at Hogwarts and was waiting on Remus to come. He didn't have to wait long before he heard a knock on his door, and let him in. Remus helped himself to a seat by the fire, and wasted no time getting started. "Well, Severus. What is this all about?"
"Glad to see you too, Lupin." Severus sat down across from him, and began the questioning. "What do you know about Sirius and Maddie's relationship?"
"Why do you ask? That was a very long time ago. I don't think we've even talked about it since he left Azkaban."
"Well, I've learned that she didn't die when her parent's home was attacked."
"Severus, are you sure? The wreckage was horrific. How can you be sure that she wasn't in there?"
"How can you be so sure she was?"
"I guess I can't. But why are you certain that she isn't dead?" There was an underlying fear in Remus' voice. Sirius meant the world to him, he always had. And now that he had him, a part of him was afraid that Sirius would find her and realize that he didn't want to be with Remus anymore.
"Oh no, I am certain that she is dead. I've seen her Death Certificate. But she didn't die because of the attack. She died at a muggle hospital in London."
"London?" Remus sat down in an armchair, and took the tea that Severus offered him. "But what would she be doing in a muggle hospital in London? Why not St. Mungo's?"
"I have a theory about that. But first, I need to know what you can remember about the time James and Lily went into hiding." Severus stared at him as if he could see Remus' memories on a slow moving picture reel.
"We knew Voldemort wanted Jamie and Lily before we left school. Albus had taken special precautions to allow them the little freedom they had. Either Sirius, myself or Peter were with them at all times in public. They were never alone. And, unbeknownst to them, one of us was outside their house at night as well. They married two weeks after leaving Hogwarts, and began their life together."
"Yes, yes. I know all about that. I also know that Voldemort would have done anything to get to the Potter's. He would have tortured anyone that had information about them until they told what they had learned. I also know that you three were his targets because you were so close to James among your and Sirius' other useful talents."
"My goodness. Have my ears just deceived me or did you compliment Sirius?"
"Lupin, you know damn well that I know he is a powerful wizard. I was in the same year as you, and shared many of the same classes as your lot. Don't over dramatize the situation."
"Touché, but where does Maddie and Sirius' relationship fall into this? Let me see if I am on the same track as you. You think that Maddie was in danger because of her closeness to Lily and James and Sirius?"
"I know that he would stop at nothing to get you to turn your backs on them. Even if it meant blackmailing you with someone you loved to learn their whereabouts."
"You're trying to say that Voldemort wanted to use Maddie to get to Sirius?"
"Precisely. Tell me Lupin, when exactly did James and Lily start hiding, completely. Never leaving their home?"
"It was just after Lily conceived Harry. November I think."
"Precisely. Follow this time line. Black and Maddie begin dating right after you left Hogwarts. Sometime in January, they make love and conceive a child. During the Easter holiday, her family is killed, and we believe she dies too. Instead, she flees to the muggle world of London, and begins living as one. In September, she gives birth and dies while doing so. It all fits. She was afraid that Voldemort would use her and the unborn child to get Sirius to tell him where the Potters were."
"But how do you know she died after giving birth to a child? And furthermore how do you know the exact date to be precise?"
Severus realized that he had offered too much information, but wanted to get this figured out. His wife's happiness depended on this conversation's outcome. "Remus, what I am about to tell you does not leave this room. Swear to me now that you won't tell anyone, especially Sirius, and I'll tell you the rest of what I know. If you cannot make that promise, then I will obliviate your memory of this conversation, and you can go on in ignorant bliss."
"Severus, you listen to me." Remus was staring him right in the eye. "Sirius is my lover. How can I keep something this important away from him? It is deceitful and I won't do that to him."
"Even if it means letting him find out on his own, from his own daughter?"
"Daughter? How do you know he has a daughter?" Remus began pacing back and forth across Severus' floor. He wanted to know what Severus had found, but he also didn't want to lie to Sirius. However, Sirius would hardly ask Remus anything concerning Maddie or a child. So if the conversation didn't come up, then he wouldn't be lying. He just wouldn't be divulging the truth. A thin line, he argued within himself, but still a line.
Severus watched him pace, and knew Remus' curiosity was killing him. He had peaked his interest, and knew Remus would give in. For several moments, he watched and waited. Finally Remus turned around and sat down.
"This better be damn good Severus and better not be some cruel joke."
"Lupin," his name was spat with venom, "I am not the one that plays cruel jokes." Remus nodded in agreement, and waited for Severus to continue.
"Yesterday afternoon, Hermione and I were at the Granger's. Her mother dropped a damned bombshell on us both. She announced to Hermione that she had been adopted. It turns out that they adopted Sirius and Maddie's child, Hermione."
"So you're telling me that you saw a Birth Certificate stating that Hermione was Maddie's child?"
"Yes, she's got it all; the Birth Certificate, Death Certificate, adoption papers, a picture of Maddie, and a charm bracelet."
"Is it golden with little animals?"
"Yes it is. I suppose that Black got it for her?"
"Yes, he gave it to her before Christmas. Then she disappeared that April. He was devastated. The night before the ambush, she sent him an owl letting him know that she needed to meet him in Diagon Alley the following night. She said she had something to tell him, and that he should come alone. That was the last time he heard from her. The ambush took place right before he was to meet her."
"Black said nothing to you or anyone about her possibly being pregnant?"
"Severus, we hardly ever spoke of anything outside of our Auror training. We were exhausted all the time. And, we forced ourselves to quit trusting each other completely. It was the only way that we could emotionally deal with the possibility of one of us being a traitor. I hardly knew what went on between them. I went to Sirius' flat right after I heard what happened to her family. I have never seen him look so bad, well, except for the first time I saw him after he escaped."
"Well, where do we go from here? There's obviously truth to the matter. What puzzles me, is no one has mentioned Albus throughout this entire situation. Is it possible that the all-seeing wizard has finally had the wool pulled over his eyes?"
"Wouldn't he have known though, Severus? When she was born, her magic would have been detected, thus putting her name down in the Hogwarts registry."
"Her name would have been put down as Hermione Granger. Her heritage isn't debated. She lives as a muggle, so we assume that she is a muggleborn. The only reason there was such a raucous about Harry was because we all knew about him and his parents."
"I see. So, where do we go from here?"
"Do we wait and let my wife tell him she's his daughter, or do we force them to meet, and have her tell him then?"
"Well, considering the only option I had of getting rid of him was to send him with Harry to your house, I'd say that he'll know sooner than we think. I bet she's telling him right now."
" Why would you send them there?"
"Well, why wouldn't I? I had no idea that you were going to tell me what you did."
Severus stood, and grabbed a handful of floo powder from the tin. "Well, I suppose we should go and see if my house is still standing."
"Why wouldn't it be? I hardly doubt they'll end up fighting over her being his daughter. In fact, I think that he'll be thrilled to know that he has a child. Especially it being Hermione. We both love her very dearly. This will only strengthen the bonds we have with her."
"I don't think they will fight either. But, being the ill tempered Gryffindor that he is, if he realizes that his only child is married to me, he'll destroy my house without a second thought.
"Oh, dear. I hadn't thought that far ahead." Remus grabbed a handful of the floo powder as well, and stepped up next to Severus.
"What time were they going over there?"
"About ten-thirty, I think. Lily and Ginny were going to go with Molly and finish buying things for the baby. Harry, James and Sirius were going to go visit with Hermione, and then meet up with them back at Godric's Hollow."
"Well, I'd say that she's probably told him by now. They've had nearly an hour's time."
"Let's go then."
