Chapter 18: The Savior’s Savior
Marvin peered nervously through
the curtain and wondered for the hundredth time that day how he got himself
into such things. Here he was, not four days after that double damned article
was published, being asked to stand before a large assembly and receive an
award from the Minister of Magic. Someone tapped him on the shoulder and he
turned to see a smiling Sirius and apologetic Harry.
“Are you okay, Marvin,” Harry
asked quietly. “You know I’ll be standing right there with you, right?
There’s plenty of security, so I don’t think we have to worry about any funny
business.”
Marvin swallowed hard. “Why did
it have to be in front of so many people? I mean, if we do this, there is no
going back is there. Everyone will know who I am and what I did by breakfast
tomorrow if they didn’t already and…and I just don’t feel like I deserve all of
this.”
Sirius snorted and wrapped an arm
around his shoulders then. “Marvin, those of us who care about Harry are very
glad that he met you. I know you think that everything would have been okay
even if you hadn’t been there to pull him off his arse, but no one can say that
for sure. Besides, this award gives you a bit more protection. None of our
ordinary citizens are going to bother you…”
“Except for autographs,” Harry
interjected cheerfully and Sirius swatted him.
“As I was saying, you’ll have less
to worry about from most people and you’ll be eligible for full time auror
protection when you leave to head back to school in two weeks.” Sirius gave
him a squeeze and Marvin smiled weakly.
“Yeah, I’m sure you guys are
right.” That was when he heard Minister Zabini coming to the end of his
speech.
“We are most grateful that this
courageous muggle was present and quick witted enough to pull our world’s
savior from danger. He is a shining example of how wrong the followers of
You-Know-Who are about muggles. Now will you please all join me in thanking
the Savior’s Savior, Mr. Marvin Vindeau?”
When Minister Zabini finished the
applause was thunderous and Marvin hesitated a moment. A moment too long
apparently, because Sirius and Harry got on either side of him and carefully
led him out. Marvin’s eyes went wide when he saw the crowd. Everyone was on
their feet clapping and whistling. He spotted the Weasley clan easily enough
as a big patch of red in the front row. Dumbledore was there with Severus and
Professor McGonagall on either side of him. Severus’ clap was lacking the
enthusiasm of those around him, but there was a smirk firmly set on his face.
Next, Marvin spotted the Malfoys. Lucius was smiling broadly and clapping in a
dignified manner. Draco was standing beside him and half-heartedly following
suit. He had to hold in a snigger when the younger Malfoy rolled his eyes.
Justin was sitting in the front next to a witch with strawberry blonde hair and
a sour expression. The auror whistled loudly and then waved at Marvin. He
could feel himself beginning to blush as Minister Zabini stepped over to shake
his hand and pulled him to the podium.
“Mr. Vindeau, for your quick
thinking and selfless actions we, the people of wizarding Britain, offer this
award for special services to the wizarding community.”
Marvin ducked his head so that the
minister could slip a large gold medal on a red ribbon around his neck. His
blush burned brighter as several flashbulbs went off. “Thank you, Minster
Zabini,” he said quietly as the wizard shook his hand again.
“None of that now,” Zabini said
with a warm smile. “Call me Blaise.”
“Enough of that, Blaise,” Harry
said with a laugh. “The poor man is embarrassed enough as it is!”
Blaise just shook his head and
chuckled. “Why don’t we step down off the stage for some more pictures?”
As soon as they were all off the
stage, Ron and Justin ran over with a camera. “Hey, Marvin, why don’t I take
some pictures of you with Harry, Sirius, and Ron? I’m sure you’d like a few to
take home with you.”
Marvin smiled brightly. “That
would be great, but I want Severus in them too please.”
Everyone around him chuckled and
Justin hurried away to collect the Potions Master, who was then drug over
scowling darkly. “Muggle…”
“Marvin,” said five voices
simultaneously.
“Whatever,” Severus said with a
smirk. “I would prefer not to…”
“I don’t really care what you
prefer, Severus,” Marvin said sternly. “Who knows when I’ll see all of you
again after I head off to school? I would really like to have this picture of
all of us together. You don’t have to smile or anything.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” Severus
said and took his place beside the others.
Sirius leaned in close to whisper
in Marvin’s ear. “We should get him laid more often. It seems to make him
very compliant.”
Marvin bust out laughing just as
the flash on the camera went off. Justin took dozens of pictures for him over
the next hour. There was one of just him and Severus, one with Dumbledore, one
with the entire Wealeys, one with Lucius and Arthur (the pair had to be pried
away from Marvin afterwards), and (probably the most surprising one) a shot of
him with Draco who was apparently very impressed with the way he had handled
Lucius (after the shock of seeing his father in a dress had worn off that is).
He lost track of the different poses Marvin found himself in, some silly and
some serious. Blaise Zabini insisted on being in several photos and even asked
Justin to make sure he received copies.
The day was going much better than
Marvin had anticipated over all. People were kind and gave him his space.
Many witches and wizards who had just come of age asked permission to show him
some different spells for his entertainment. He was delighted to watch, of
course, and was treated to the sight of dozens of Patronus Charms at the same
time. So dogs, cats, horses, eagles, angels, and anything else one could imagine
as a good guardian were rushing about. It was beautiful.
He smiled at a small group of
young, giggling witches as he made his way to the refreshment table. Placing a
couple of biscuits on a napkin, Marvin turned to look for Harry. That was when
he heard the screams begin. Frantically looking for the cause, he missed the
Death Eaters who were moving quickly up behind him. Luckily, his friends had
not taken their eyes off him that whole day and Severus called out a warning.
“Marvin, behind you!”
He whirled about to find himself
being surrounded by no less than twenty Death Eaters being led by…a house elf?

Harry was sprinting towards
Marvin, Sirius and Severus close on his heels. His wand was drawn and he was
already sending hexes left and right. The aurors on post and off duty were
dealing with the Death Eaters that had filtered into the crowd. Marvin had
backed himself against the refreshment table and was grasping behind him. That
was when Harry saw who was leading the Death Eaters. It was Dobby.
At least twenty wands were
pointing at Marvin when the house elf’s squeaky voice called out, “Take him!”
Marvin, living up to everything
that had been said about him that day in Harry’s opinion, whipped a large,
silver platter out from behind him and began to deflect all of the spells that
were being sent at him.
“Hang on, Marvin,” Harry called
out to his friend. He called to Severus and Sirius who were separated and
fighting nearly on opposite sides of the group of Death Eaters. “Severus,
Sirius, we need to clear him a path!”
Both wizards nodded their
understanding and joined Harry in making a way down the middle of the group,
which Marvin promptly dove through and rolled behind Harry. When he turned to
make sure the muggle was okay he saw that Lucius and Draco had joined them.
Lucius was glaring murderously at Dobby, the creature who had kept him under
the Imperius Curse for all those years, even after Voldemort had gone the first
time. The house elf was quickly bound and knocked out, as were most of the
Death Eaters.
Seeing that things were going in
their favor, Harry leaned over and pulled Marvin to his feet. “That was
definitely some quick thinking, Marvin.”
The muggle managed a weak smile,
his blue eyes a bit wild. “Well, I told you not to think I was helpless, now
didn’t I.”
Harry began to laugh and then
caught the look of panic that suddenly came across Marvin’s face. “What…?”
He was cut off by grabbing him and
spinning him around just as one of the Death Eaters screamed, “Avada Kedavra!”
