Chapter 18
Letting go of the tree, she fell to his side where Severus was trying to lower him down gently.
“Let go of him Severus.”
His gaze flicked to her, his focus still partly on what was in the forest.
Kathy pushed him away and grabbed Albus’ hands, willing him to be strong again. She didn’t know why or how she did what she did, it was no more than a reflex action, but Albus’ colour quickly improved as his strength returned.
“Kathy, what did you just do?”
She blinked and turned to Severus. “I don’t know, I’m not sure what happened.”
“Well I do.” Albus told them, smiling now. “You took control my dear, what you inadvertently took from me only moments ago, you willingly returned, and more besides. I must admit to being rather grateful for that, as well as honoured to be part of such a major breakthrough in your control of such a unique gift.” He stood while Severus pulled Kathy to her feet. “Next time I shall let you know before I attempt to join your connection with Severus, it might prove to be safer.” He chuckled.
Kathy felt dreadful at being the cause of the old mans collapse. She wanted to hug him, comfort him, but she daren’t for fear of draining him again. “I’m really sorry Albus, I didn’t mean that to happen. If I’d known, maybe I could have stopped it or something. I don’t know.”
“It was entirely my own fault, do not blame yourself. The sight of you and Severus experiencing something clearly wonderful, yet not being included, I took it upon myself to join in. I should have told you of my intention first. Besides, I am fine now, thanks to you, that was quite an extraordinary accomplishment, returning my energy like that. I could feel it returning as much as I felt it leave me.”
“I think it best we return to the castle, and you should put your boots back on young lady, before you catch a chill.”
Kathy looked down at her stockinged feet and wiggled her toes. “That’s another strange thing, I don’t feel in the least bit cold, yet the grounds frozen.” She pulled her boots on, momentarily feeling a loss for the connection with mother earth, but it passed as she automatically linked arms with Severus as the trio headed back to the welcoming warmth of Hogwarts.
Kathy set about making the pot of tea while Albus settled in a chair by the fire and Severus went to his rooms to retrieve a bottle of fire whiskey.
It wasn’t long before Severus and Albus were eagerly snatching for the last butterfly bun on the plate. Kathy took it for herself to prevent any argument occurring, ignoring the sullen looks from both of them.
“Don’t you have anymore hidden away?” Severus asked.
“I do, but if I let you have them, there won’t be any for another day will there. Honestly, you two are worse than children.”
Severus frowned while Albus pouted slightly. When she saw their expressions she laughed and took the empty plate away, laughing harder when she noticed the hopeful expressions on her return. But she was empty handed and the pouts returned.
“Grow up you two, will you cheer up if I let you try that ‘Jellyleg’ thing?”
The two wizards eyed each other, the corners of Severus’ lips twitching, while Albus twiddled with his wand.
“Jelly-legs.” Both shouted together, wands pointed at her legs.
Kathy stood and walked round the table. The spell had hit her, and just disappeared.
Severus shouted, “Silencio.”
“What was that one?” She asked him.
“Rictumsempra.” From Albus, but Kathy had already said she wasn’t ticklish so they didn’t know if it was avoided or not.
Incarcerous, Accio, Babblaeto, along with sleep charms, hiccoughing charms and even an over excited perficus totalis was shot at her.
Kathy was either absorbing, which seemed most likely, or deflecting the spells, though where to was as yet unknown.
“Have you two quite finished now? I’d like to drink my tea before it goes completely cold.”
The wizards stopped what they were doing, lowered their heads and put their wands away. Both had got slightly carried away and Albus actually blushed.
“Sorry.” They both mumbled.
Kathy looked at them crossly, as she would naughty children, then realised the absurdity of the situation and cracked out laughing. “If you two could see your faces, honestly, you look like a couple of kids caught with your hands in the biscuit tin.”
Albus had the grace to deepen his blush, offer his goodnights and leave, while Severus, outraged at being scolded like a young boy, and even worse allowing it to happen, grabbed his whiskey bottle, gave a curt goodnight and stalked back to his rooms.
Kathy was given a steady supply of books to read, and read she did, though quite often she struggled to understand the context of certain spells. Transfiguration was completely beyond her and she quickly gave up trying to understand it. Likewise with Arithmancy, and she found Ancient Runes, mildly interesting, but not enough that she could read the runes without constantly referring back to the book. She turned out to be a dab hand at preparing potion ingredients, and brewing wasn’t a problem for her either, only when it was necessary to include magic with the brewing was she stumped. Because her magic came from sources not naturally within her, a wand was about as useful as a piece of kindling in her hand. Occasionally she could cause Severus’ to emit a few sparks, but that was as far as it went, which of course meant Charms was rather pointless too. She enjoyed reading the History of Magic books, and Astronomy took her interest for a while. She loved reading about Divination, much to Severus’ chagrin, and with the help of Albus, she was able to make minor predictions with the help of tea leaves and the crystal ball.
Severus constantly encouraged her to make more and more difficult potions until eventually, she was able to brew the Felix Felicis, Veritaserum, Wolfesbane and the Draught of the Living Death. Kathy went ballistic when she discovered what it was called. He told after she’d successfully bottled it and she automatically thought is was a poison and nothing more.
He stopped telling her the names of the creatures she was made to dissect, chop, mince, grind and liquefy, although not squeamish, she preferred not to know that the thing she was slicing was the heart of some poor little fluffy thing called a Puffskein, or that she was adding Dragons blood to some particularly foul smelling mixture.
She was particularly heartbroken when she discovered she was chopping up the liver of the Hippogriff she’d met the several weekends ago.
That had been a disaster.
She’d obeyed Hagrid’s instructions to a ‘T’, bowing to the creature, waiting until it bowed to her, and stroking it gently when it approached her. She’d continued to stroke it as it pushed gently into her hands, and the power she’d felt from it was intoxicating. So much so that even when the creature eventually sunk to its knees, she was unable to bring herself to let go, wanting more of the energy, the arrogance, the absolute sense of invincibility that it instilled in her.
When Hagrid lifted her bodily from the dying creature, she struggled to get back to it, her eyes glazed, her mind focussed solely on what this odd creature could give her.
Even Hagrid was momentarily taken aback at her strength when he pulled her away and she managed to send him sprawling on his back before she realised what she was doing. By then the Hippogriff was dead, drained completely of its life-force as Severus and Albus looked on horrified.
She refused point blank after that to ever experiment on another living creature.
The fact that she had a dark nature, hitherto unknown to her, continued to haunt her for many weeks and she cried herself to sleep at night at the thought she’d killed such a beautiful, majestic being.
So she stuck to books, brewing potions, and keeping her little set of rooms clean.
