Things were better for Harry after the first task. Once his fellow students saw what he was facing, they decided to support him and Cedric both. The Slytherins were still being prats, but them he could handle. The best part was that he and Ron had finally made up. It felt good to have a best friend again.
A week after the task Harry was contacted by Draco for another meeting. This time he told Ron and Hermione about it after dinner while they were doing their homework. “I don’t trust the slimy git,” Ron declared.
Harry sighed and started tapping his fingers on his knee. “I didn’t either at first, but he really didn’t seem that bad. I owe it to my dad and the truce Draco offered to see where this goes.”
“I think Harry’s right,” Hermione agreed. “He hasn’t been civil with us in public, but he’s being kind in private which means he’s probably under a lot of social pressure.”
“He’s being nice to Harry,” Ron pointed out. “I don’t think he’ll be quite as accepting of us.”
For once Hermione couldn’t think of a reply and went back to her book. Harry couldn’t think of anything to say either because he had never thought about it.
Harry tried to think of a way to bring it up while he was with Draco, but before he knew it, it was nearly three in the morning. Draco gave him a light pat on the shoulder and went to leave before turning back around in the doorway.
“Oh, I almost forgot. We’re supposed to all have Christmas together here at Hogwarts.”
“Why?” Harry asked. “I mean, why here at Hogwarts?”
Draco chuckled. “Don’t tell me you haven’t heard about the Yule Ball yet.”
Harry shook his head. “No…”
“Well, it’s part of the tournament. Didn’t you wonder why we were supposed to bring dress robes?”
“Well yeah, but I didn’t know there was going to be a ball.”
Draco smiled and shook his head. “You really need to start using your head more. And by the way, your friends can come too.”
Harry stood there for a minute as Draco left. It seemed the blonde boy had answered Harry’s question. He told Ron and Hermione about the invitation in the morning.
He also learned more about the Yule Ball from Professor McGonagall at the end of Transfiguration. And much to his horror, he found out that as a champion he would be expected to start off the ball by dancing with his partner. Despite his best efforts to tell McGonagall he couldn’t and wouldn’t dance, it seemed he wasn’t getting out of it.
He and Ron went to find James who was enjoying a little leisure time. “Can you teach me to dance?” Harry asked breathlessly as soon as they found him messing around in one of the greenhouses.
James grinned. “You owe Remus a big thank you for getting me to take Ballroom Dancing classes with him. Let’s go back to my room.”
“You really took lessons?” Harry asked as he followed James back into the castle.
“Yeah. Remus decided he wanted to learn, and didn’t want to go alone. He badgered me until I gave in and signed up as his partner.”
Harry suddenly felt much better. Now all he had to do was find someone to go with him. “Wait, is Remus….?” Harry asked suddenly curious.
“No,” James chuckled. “He’s just very open minded and secure.”
James got out his music player and turned on some music. “Now, let’s see how much I remember.”
He and Harry danced while Ron watched. Harry was a quick study and wasn’t doing too badly by dinner time. “See, it’s not so difficult,” James smiled as he gave Harry a pat on the back. “I’m sure you’ll be fine.”
“Dad, when did you know you were gay?” Harry asked.
James was taken a little off guard and it took him a moment to respond. “Well, first of all, I’m not gay. I’m bi with a preference for men. Second, I guess I always knew. My first crush was a boy. Why do you ask?”
“No reason,” Harry answered quietly. “I was just curious.”

Harry woke Christmas morning to two sets of eyes watching him intently. Startled, he screamed and shot upright. He calmed down when he saw it was Dobby and Mitsy. “Dobby and Mitsy wanted to wish Harry Potter Merry Christmas!” Dobby beamed at him.
Mitsy nodded enthusiastically, and Harry noticed that she, like the house elves down in the kitchens, kept a little distance between her and Dobby. Harry didn’t understand it, but unlike Hermione, he wasn’t going to try to change it.
Harry’s scream had woken the other boys, and when they saw no attacker or anything they decided that was as good a time as any to get up and open presents. Harry’s eyes opened wide when he found a very large package at the foot of his bed. It was wrapped in bright blue paper with sparkling silver snowflakes and a giant white bow. When he stood next to it, the box was as wide as his body and came up to his hips! “Who on earth sent this?” he wondered out loud.
Ron came over to investigate and found the card. His eyes went wide and he handed it to Harry. The card read;
Merry Christmas! To: Harry Potter, From: L.M, D.M, and J.P
“Well, who’s it from Harry?” Seamus Finnegan asked.
“Um… a long lost relative,” Harry mumbled quietly. He was in too much shock to move for a few minutes. He never expected Lucius and Draco to send him a present.
As soon as the surprise wore off he tore into the package and found that it was full of clothes. As he started pulling everything out he saw it was a vast assortment of robes and Muggle clothing that looked like it would fit him properly. At the bottom of the box he found a wide variety of sweets. Some he recognized and some looked like they had come from one of those fancy shops.
Ron soon noticed that he had a box with the same wrapping paper, but this box was a wide rectangular shape. Sure enough, the card was the same as on Harry’s box except it said; To: Ronald Weasely
Ron tore the paper off and opened it. Inside was a very elegant looking dress robe. Ron looked a little confused.
“What’s wrong?” Harry asked. “That looks really nice. Don’t you like it?”
Ron moved to sit closer to Harry so they wouldn’t be overheard. “It’s not so much the robe as who it’s from.”
Harry looked at his best friend questioningly. Lucius had given Harry a whole new wardrobe so he didn’t understand why Ron had a problem with a dress robe. He certainly needed one, and was very unhappy with the one Mrs. Weasely had bought him second hand. “Harry, do you think this is his way of rubbing my face in his money?”
Harry thought about it for a minute. “No, I don’t think so. Their idea of showing off is buying expensive things for themselves and flashing them about shamelessly. It looks like he spent a lot of money, but he spent it on you.”
Ron sighed. “I suppose you’re right.”
“Are you going to breakfast with me?”
Ron looked at the robe lying out on his bed currently being admired by their dorm mates and thought about it. “I guess I should. Dad said I should be civil as long they are.”
“Excellent,” Harry smiled. “There’s just one problem though. No one ever told me where we’re supposed to go.”
As soon as Harry finished speaking there was a tap at the window. He jumped up to retrieve the message from the owl that was waiting on the windowsill. His name was on the envelope so he opened it.
It was a message from James telling Harry to come down to the Potions classroom as soon as he got the message. Harry groaned, but he and Ron went out to the common room to find Hermione waiting for them. She wanted to show them the charm bracelet she had gotten from L.M. D.M, and J.P.
“It’s beautiful,” Harry said as he admired it. “Are you coming to breakfast?”
She nodded. “Yes, I decided last night that I would. Also, it would be rude of me not to thank them for the gift.”
The three of them headed off toward the dungeons. “Why are we going down here?” Hermione asked.
“I got a message telling me to go to the Potions classroom this morning,” Harry answered.
“Oh…,” Hermione sighed as she followed him.
When they arrived, Harry stood before the classroom door and hesitated for a moment before knocking softly. He wasn’t sure what he expected to happen, but the door was opened by Draco. “Just in time for the show,” the blonde smiled and motioned for them to come in.
The three followed Draco to the back of the classroom where there was a small door that looked like a closet door. However, when opened it revealed a cozy looking living room. A roaring fire was in the fireplace and Snape was tied in a chair, with pink ribbon with a very large pink bow tied on his head. It was hard for Harry to be afraid of his Potions teacher, even with the menacing scowl on the older wizard’s face.
James was admiring his handiwork and laughing. Lucius moved up behind James and wrapped his arms around him nuzzling his neck. “Has anyone ever told you you’re pure evil?” Lucius chuckled.
“A few times,” James answered with a Cheshire grin.
It was then that they all noticed the kids. “Ah, there you are!” James greeted them. “I’m glad you all came.
Lucius stood there with a strained smile. It was difficult for him to look at Ronald Weaseley the blood traitor and Hermione Granger the Muggle born and be polite, but that was what he was going to do. Things had been so much easier in his younger days when he wasn’t so set in his ways.
“We… we wanted to thank you for the gifts,” Hermione broke the silence.
“You’re welcome,” Lucius said as he motioned to a large round table laden with food. “Come, join us.”
Everyone moved to sit at the table. “Are you going to untie me?” Snape growled.
“Eventually,” James answered.
“But this is my room!” Severus shouted as he struggled against the restraints.
“I know, and we’re thankful, but I’m still not untying you.”
The seven of them had a pleasant Christmas morning. After they finished stuffing themselves with delicious food James untied Snape and Draco challenged Ron to a game of chess. James watched and occasionally whispered in Draco’s ear. The game was over pretty quickly and Draco won.
Around mid afternoon Harry and Ron went to join Fred and George outside. Hermione announced that she was going to start getting ready for the ball. Draco watched them go with a heavy heart.
“Something wrong?” Lucius asked, noticing his son’s sour expression.
“No….” Draco sighed. “Not really. I’ll… I’ll just go back to Slytherin house until the ball.”
Lucius sadly watched him go “I wish things were different.”
“Oh? How so?” James asked.
“Slytherin is a very lonely house to be in. You have no friends.”
James sighed and patted Lucius gently on the shoulder. “Things will be different once Voldemort is finally dead. Which by the way, I don’t like to talk business on a holiday, but did you look into why he won’t die?”
Lucius flinched a little at the name. “I don’t like to talk business on a holiday either, so you’re just going to have to wait until later.”
