Ron looked from Lucius to Draco then back to Lucius patiently, waiting for a reaction from either. Narcissa on the other hand wasn’t so patient, and she sent a hard elbow into her husband’s ribs, forcing a sharp exhale.
“Son.” He said with a nod.
“Father.” Draco returned, still shocked. He looked over at Ron who was looking at him closely. He knew Ron would do whatever he asked, even if it meant kicking his father out, but then he looked to his mother. She was smiling at him, obviously happy to see him. He didn’t know what she did to get his father here, but she had done it. For her sake, he would get through this. But he would need help to do it.
“Can I get anyone a drink?” Ron asked.
“Yes, I’ll be needing one.” Draco said and hurried to the kitchen. Ron was behind him in a few moments, having taken their cloaks.
“Alright, alright, come on now.” He took the glass that Draco had just emptied and filled four flutes with champagne. Draco quickly added another place to the table, then followed Ron to the front room.
Lucius was sitting on the loveseat beside his wife. He seemed uncomfortable but Ron thought it was justified. He sat in an armchair as Ron took the other. For several moments silence filled the room and the four occupants looked from person to person. Draco was looking to Ron for strength. Ron was watching Lucius in case he tried anything, Narcissa was looking to Ron for support with the two men, and Lucius was looking at his wife for protection.
Finally Narcissa spoke. She always hated silence. “Draco, do you have enough for an extra person?” She asked politely.
“Of course,” he said, “we always make more than is needed here.”
“Why is that?” Lucius asked from his spot. Everyone held their breath. He didn’t ask in a demeaning manor, just a curious one. Narcissa had the same curiosity as to why two young men would cook more then they need.
“Well, aside from Ron’s usually strong appetite, he can just grab leftovers and take it to the Nimbus offices for lunch. He can use his wand to heat them.” Draco answered. His voice was still shaky, but Lucius merely nodded.
Ron gave him a smile then stood. “Well, we have a hot meal waiting, why don’t we all sit down.” Ron took Draco’s hand and walked to the table. He set down his own glass and then offered Lucius a seat. Narcissa was seated beside her husband.
“You put them together?” Draco asked as they went to the kitchen for the salad. “Normally when couples dine, you alternate.”
“Number one, this isn’t a fancy restaurant; number two, I’ll sit where I want in my own home; number three, putting him beside her will make it easier for her to kick him under the table if he fucks up.” Ron said, taking the bowl. Draco followed him back out, nodding at the explanations.
Ron served salad to everyone, then sat down. The sounds of chewing salad threatened to take over until Narcissa spoke. “How do you like Nimbus Ron?”
“It’s everything I thought it would be. The design team is just fabulous.”
“Turner is head of the design team is he not?” Lucius asked.
“Yes, he is. Very elegant man.” Ron said.
“Aside from all the grease in his hair.” Lucius commented. The two were drawn into conversation about the upper echelon on Nimbus, most of whom Lucius was acquainted with.
The main course was served and Narcissa addressed her son. “Draco, what have you decided to do?” Lucius looked up and waited for an answer.
“I have decided to submit a manuscript for publication.” He said.
“A manuscript?” Narcissa asked. “You’ve written something?”
“I’ve been writing for several years. I have several completed novels, and have chosen two to polish up and edit before sending them in.” He said.
His mother had a joyfully surprised expression on her face, and her smile just wouldn’t fade. “What publishers have you chosen?” Lucius asked.
“Cauldron House and Penguin.” He said. Lucius nodded. Draco knew he had chosen fine publishers. Penguin was also a muggle publisher so anything Draco wrote would be considered fantasy fiction in the muggle world. Hermione had told him about that particular publisher, saying it would give him access to a larger reading audience if they chose to market him.
“I think it’s wonderful.” Narcissa said.
Draco chose that moment to ask something that had been weighing on his mind. “How is Daphne?”
After several moments of silence Lucius looked up. “Are you concerned about her?”
“Not in a romantic sense obviously, but I regret that she was given an implication that something was going to happen. I don’t want anyone hurt over something I had no control over.” Draco explained.
Narcissa looked at her husband with focused eyes. She didn’t want this evening to be spoiled. She had spoken with Lucius at length before they arrived. She wanted civility this evening. This was a chance to know the man he son had become, and she would not let Lucius’s quick temper get the better of him.
“I told her that you were involved with a man.” Lucius said.
“You did?” Draco seemed shocked. Given his father’s reaction, he didn’t think he would admit something like that about his son to anyone.
“Yes, I did. I explained that it was nothing against her personally and she could have been anyone.” He said.
“What did she say?” Draco asked.
‘She asked me outright if I was using her to try and fix you?” Draco chuckled, thinking it was something he seemed capable of. Lucius continued. “I told her I had only just found out as well, and I would never use her in such a way. I also told her that when you found out what I had intended you came out.”
“Did she take it well?” Ron asked.
“Yes, she was very understanding. Her father as well.” Lucius said, taking a sip of his champagne.
Draco nodded and the meal continued. His father had taken responsibility of the situation as he should have. It was his idea to create a romance between the two and it was his fault when things didn’t happen that way. Draco felt good that Daphne had been told the truth. For all her annoying character traits, he didn’t want anyone hurt because of him.
Desert was eagerly finished and the business aspects of Nimbus were brought up again between Ron and Lucius. Draco was glad that his boyfriend managed to keep his father entertained. The last thing he wanted was the complete and undivided attention of Lucius Malfoy.
His mother gave him a comforting smile, and he returned it. She didn’t want him to be cut off from his father, and frankly Draco didn’t want it either, but there was nothing he could do if his father didn’t accept both him and Ron. They were a pair now, they came together. If his father couldn’t accept him as he was then he would live his life without his father’s influence. He was his own man now, this was his life to live, and he wanted to share it with Ron.
They shared after dinner tea while Ron talked with Lucius. Draco knew he was doing it to keep the older man distracted but he was grateful for it. “What did you threaten him with to get him here Mother?” He asked quietly.
“Divorce.” She said quietly.
Draco looked at his mother in shock. “You didn’t?”
“I did, but I knew he would agree. You see Draco, for all the women he has gone to and all the lies he had told me, I am the only woman he loves. He doesn’t want me to leave, and he will do anything to keep me.” She explained.
“Then why the other women?” He asked.
“That’s something I never asked him, and frankly I don’t care. I am the one he shares his life with, and I am the one who knows him best. These other women are diversions and cheap entertainment. I bore him a son and I stand by him through everything. When I threatened to leave, he knew I was serious. I have never threatened to leave your father and I never will.” She said. “I don’t know if he will ever stop with the others, but I am Mrs. Malfoy and I always will be.”
“You are strong to put up with that, if Ron ever went to anyone else, I’d be crushed.” He said.
“What you and Ron have is different, and I can see how special it is. Ron loves you, and I wanted your father to see it.” She said. “I told him that I could overlook almost everything, I can forgive him any stupid mistake for my family and my marriage, but I would not overlook the abandonment of our son. Regardless of who you love and what you do, you are still our son.”
“It took a threat for him to see it.” Draco said sadly.
“Sometimes it takes a slap across the face to make a stubborn man see something he can’t.” He looked to his father, thinking she was right. His father was among the proudest men on England and it made him notorious in some circles.
“Did he say anything?” Draco asked, scared of the answer.
“Only that he wondered what he had done. Did he push you or demand too much from you?” She said. “I told him what you feel had nothing to do with how you were raised. This is just who you are.”
“Do you think he believed you?”
“He came tonight didn’t he?” Narcissa took her son in a hug and announced they were leaving now.
Ron brought their cloaks, and the two men walked the Malfoys to the door. Narcissa hugged her son and Ron, then stepped outside. Luicus offered a hand to Ron then looked to his son. For a long moment, he said nothing then thrust out a hand. Draco took it but neither man said anything.
Draco cleaned up the front room in silence while Ron waved his wand and had the kitchen cleaned up in no time. He went back to the bedroom and found his lover face down and spread eagle on their bed.
“Oh good, just the position I was hoping to get you in.” He said.
Draco rolled over and smiled at him. “That was thoroughly exhausting.”
“You’re not supposed to say that until the sex is over.” He joked climbing over him and straddling his lap.
“Thank you for putting up with him.” Draco said, reaching out and taking Ron’s hands in his.
“Thank you for not panicking.” Ron said leaning down and resting his weight on his forearms.
“My mother wanted him here so I did it for her.” He said, running his hands along Ron’s hips.
“I know you did,” Ron said, “and she was happy tonight.”
“I know.” Draco smiled. Ron returned it glad that some progress was made with Lucius Malfoy.
