Chapter Eighteen: Passion Persistence and Perseverance
The Hogwarts Express rolled into the King's Cross station with a cloud of steam and a blast of its whistle. Harry held Maggie's hand as he waited, with Heath on his shoulders. “Where's Papa, Daddy?” the boy asked and Harry patted his knee where it was exposed below his short pants.“He'll be here, Heath. Just watch for him.”
“Look, Heathie! It's James and he's got Caesar with him.” Maggie called, jumping up and down in excitement, her dark auburn ringlets bobbing along. Maggie had insisted on wearing her blue gingham sundress because it made her look five, even though her birthday was still months away. She broke free of her father and ran across the platform toward her oldest brother.
James was tailored, his silk shirt cut to display his shape to its ultimate. He would not be criticizing Lily's love of shopping any longer, since he discovered his style. At 6'3”, James stood a head taller than most of his class, including the boy who walked next to him. He released the smaller boy's hand, when Maggie leaped at him and flew into his arms. He put her back on the ground when he reached his father's location.
“So, how's my favorite Head Boy?” Harry asked and James blushed.
“Dad, not in front of Caesar.”
“How are you, Caesar? Seven NEWT O's. Your parents must be proud.”
“Yes, Mr. Potter. They are.” Caesar's almond shaped eyes aimed at his feet as the boy spoke. His olive skin and dark brown kinky hair were all the resemblance he bore to his father, the rest was all Cho.
“I knew if I found you, I'd find my son, Potter.” a deep voice said from behind Harry. The auror turned with a smile.
“Well, I'm so much more interesting than you are, Zabini.”
“Right. So, where's your better half?”
Harry looked at the crowds of departing students. “He'll be here. He decided to ride home on the train with the children.”
“Oh, really. He may regret that. He still got a fan club?”
“Yeah. Half of the second and third years have taken to following him around the school like groupies.” James sneered and the two fathers laughed.
“Where's Mom?” Caesar asked, looking over the milling children and parents around them.
“She went to get Roman and Athena.” Blaise said. “She'll probably have to drag our daughter from the gaggle of red-heads around your husband, Harry.”
“Athena is one of them, too” Harry asked. “I thought she couldn't stand Misty.”
“To be part of the potions elite, Athena will become best friends with every Weasley daughter you throw at her.”
“Who'd have thought this generation would produce a potions prodigy for every Weasley family.”
“Even yours.” Blaise amended.
“And speaking of Weasleys. Look.” Harry said, pointing to a mob of red hair just in front of them. Albus and Scorpius walked ahead of them with a blonde and a dark-haired girl. Draco was at the center of the mob, being pawed by several of the thirteen and fourteen-year-old girls.
“Dad!” Albus called, pulling the blonde girl along as he hurried forward. “This is Renee Peakes. Remember, I told you about her?”
“Yes, I do. How do you do, Miss Peakes?”
“I'm pleased to meet you, Mr. Potter.” The pretty blonde girl said.
“And I you.” Harry took her hand and patted it with his other. When she blushed and giggled, he turned and watched as Scorpius arrived with the brunette. “And you must be Elizabeth Flint.”
“Yes, I am.”
“See, I do listen.” Harry said to his sons and Draco chuckled from his place in the middle of the group of girls.
“Can we come over to your house, Uncle Harry?” Misty Weasley, Percy's third daughter asked.
“Oooh, yeah!” Rose agreed.
“Dad!” Lily groaned loudly, pushing her sister aside. “I only invited Athena over and she can go home with Caesar, when he goes.”
“I wasn't going ho . . .” the half Italian began, but James elbowed him and he stopped.
“You can go another day, Thena. We're going to visit your Grandmother.” Blaise said just as Cho arrived with a thirteen year old boy who bore an uncanny resemblance to his twin sister. Roman was as pretty as any of the girls in his class.
“Are you glad to be home, Roman?” Harry asked, leaning in to give his mother a kiss on the cheek as he nodded. “Hey, Cho.”
“Hey, Harry. Come along, Athena. Your trunk is already on the way home. Kiss your brother goodbye and let's go. We'll see you in the morning, Caesar.” She said hugging her eldest before putting her arm in her husband's and smiling brightly. “Perhaps, you and your family can come to dinner next week, Harry?”
“Professor Malfoy, too?” Athena said brightening.
“Of course.” Her mother agreed and the girls around him squealed in delight. The Zabinis made their escape in the turmoil.
“Okay, why aren't you girls with your families?” Draco waved his hands to get silence.
“Uncle Harry is family.” Misty Weasley said.
“We can't find them, so we're waiting for them to find us.” Roxanne, George and Angelina's girl added.
“I want to wait here.” Susan, Charlie's girl groused.
“Me, too.” Rose agreed.
“Ron's getting Hugo and their trunks. Hermione is home with David. He and Freddie caught the same cold. George and Percy are running late and Charlie is . . . oh, there.” Harry ended his comments with a raised arm, juggling Heath who reached for his Papa. Draco took him and bounced him in his arms. “So, I've offered to watch them until they are collected.”
“Freddie's sick, Papa.” Heath said.
“He is? And you didn't catch it? Wonderful.” Draco tossed the little boy into the air and Heath giggled happily. While he did this, the girls sighed and smiled.
Charlie came over with his wife Claira, and his eighteen year old daughter Reggie. “Susie, there you are. Say goodbye to your cousins and let's go home. Thanks, Harry.”
Claira was Susan Bones' older sister, and a classmate of Charlie's. When Susan had passed on, as a result of a curse she received while working as an auror with Harry, the couple had named their new baby after her.
When they had left, George, Percy and Ron found the group, followed by Hugo, Lavenia and Fred Jr. pushing trolleys full of trunks, cages and boxes. “Rose, I put your trunk on top of Hugo's, but Iris made a fuss when we tried to put her cage on top.” Ron handed his daughter the cage and hugged her affectionately. She looked mortified and Harry hid a smile. The owl she held hooted irritably.
Soon, the redheads had decreased down to only Lily and Maggie. Draco handed Heath to James and leaned against his husband as they started toward the apparation point in a group. Maggie jabbered to her sister, whom she had missed the most of her siblings. The line was gone now, so James took Maggie's hand and took her and Heath home, while Draco side-alonged Lily and Harry took Scorpius and Albus. Caesar followed the family and then went with James to his room. Maggie and Heath were taken to the nursery, where she read a story to her ill brother and the two-year-old took a nap. Lily, Albus and Scorpius went for a swim, but Harry pulled his spouse back into their room and pressed him against the wall.
“I've arranged for a full week off, and I mean to make it memorable. I've missed you, you know?” he whispered.
“You have? Well, I can think of some ways to fill that time. I'll need to do some brewing, soon. Lloyd tells me we're low on some household potions, bu not so low that I can't put that off for a week. Show me how much you missed me.”
Harry smiled eerily and hoisted the blond off of the floor. Draco wrapped his legs around his husband's hips. “Oooh, you are energetic. Have you been dipping into the fountain water?”
“Nope. You make me young, My Dragon. You're my Fountain of Youth, my healing spring and my aphrodisiac.”
“Good. Because I don't think I'll have time to brew any of those during this break.”
No further words were spoken as Harry sealed his mouth over his love's and took him to paradise.
In the east wing of the manor house, another Potter pulled off his tailored silk shirt and hung it over the back of the chair in his room. He smirked at his olive-skinned friend and Caesar smiled back.
“You won't be scurrying off to the dungeons tonight, my Slytherin Prince.”
“And you won't need to brave the corridors after curfew, my Lion.” Caesar hooked his thumbs into the waistband of his pants and trousers, dropping them together and stepping out of the fabric. “I've been dreaming about this for months.”
“Me, too. I've told the elves not to disturb us, so . . . with the locking and privacy spells, we have the whole day. Dinner won't be for hours.”
“Then, come and take me, Jimmie.” Caesar held his arms out, his naked body displayed in the light of the huge bay windows.
“Oh, I have been waiting for two weeks for this.” James said as he went forward and scooped up the smaller wizard. “I'm gonna take you on every surface in this room.” Caesar laughed and James smirked again. “We'll see if I'm serious or not.”
Draco leaned against his husband while Harry ran his hands languidly over the blond's smooth pec'ts. The auror sighed and kissed his lover from his shoulder to his ear. “So, that's all you've missed me?” Draco asked and Harry chuckled.“I've just begun to show you, but I thought we should have some dinner, so you won't get too weak.”
“Mmm, I could go for some food. I'd like to play with our son a bit, too.”
“Heath has been asking for you, for days.”
“You know just what I needed to hear.”
“And speaking of our sons . . . .just how angry is your friend going to be about James buggering his boy?”
When Draco had stopped laughing, he turned over and crawled up to straddle Harry's hips. “He already knows, I'm sure. And if he asks me, I'll tell him about James plucking up his Gryffindor courage to ask me about potions and precautions to make sure that they would be safe. I thought it was very responsible.”
“And then you called me, immediately.”
“I would have, but I had classes and got busy. Are you ever going to let that drop?”
“Most likely, but not until you have leaned your lesson.”
“Posh! I called you when Albus and Scorpius started sniffing around pure-blood girls, didn't I?” Draco scooted down and nipped at the skin next to Harry's navel, eliciting a gasp. “Speaking of which, what do you make of Miss Flint and Miss Peakes?”
“They were the only girls around us not giggling and squealing every time you spoke. I liked them.”
“Aside from that.”
“I still don't understand it. Why did they both suddenly decide to chase girls? It's obvious how they feel.”
“You're thinking like a Gryffindor, again.”
“So, what? They are Ravenclaws. It's not like they are devious Slytherins.”
“No, they are practical. Find compatible girls, who are willing to accept them and their relationship, and be agreeable to bear them a son and heir.”
“Okay, so Scorpius is a pure-blood, and he would want to carry on his heritage . . . “
“And Albus is the son of a pure-blood and a half-blood. He's three fourths pure and his child would be accepted as pure, if he marries a pure-blood witch. Jimmie Peakes and Gabrielle Delacour are both pure-bloods.”
“So, he redeems the Potter name in the pure-blood circles.”
“Potter, it's a political move. If he can legitimize his line, he can regain the position in the Wizengamut. From what I've heard, our boys are interested in pursuing a career in politics.”
“Really? I thought they were potion crazy like your fangirls. Wow. And those girls would be okay with being trophy wives?”
“Did you look at them, Potter?”
“They were very pretty.” Harry added.
“They were. And they dress well. And they are very popular. They don't get good marks and have limited magic.”
“Okay, that does sound like a trophy wife. Will the boys be able to keep them happy? And more importantly, will the boys be happy?”
“They'll have each other.” Draco noted. “They'll make their own happiness and trust the girls to do the same. My mother has offered to talk to them, all of them, and explain ways to make it work. Things her mother told her. Father was not her first choice and their first years were not as happy as the later ones. I believe that may be why it took so long for my conception.”
“But, they love each other.
“Now, yes. They've been together fr over forty years, Harry. It took us that long to find each other, and they worked at it, to make it as easy for each other as possible. Mother dressed to be attractive to father and he would take her to plays, operas and dancing, even though he wasn't inclined to enjoy those activities before they were wed. Compromise.”
“Like when I take you to Ministry functions and let them fawn over me, even though I hate it?”
“Yes, because I enjoy those things. And in turn, I go with you to Chudley Cannon games and join you, and Weasley, in cheering for that ghastly group of losers.”
“I know, you were a Falmouth Falcons fan before we were together. Thank you for putting up with us.” Harry pulled his husband down to place a needy kiss on his lips.
When they parted, Draco shook his head. “We need to get dressed and go see our children. We'll have plenty of time for us later.” the blond crawled off his husband and the bed, walking to the armoire, displaying his naked bum for his auror spouse.
“Harry flew to his feet, snatched his lover and threw them both onto the bed. No words were spoken as lips met, hands roamed and bodies sparked with arousal. When Harry entered Draco, he did so hard and fast, his hips pistoning up and down in a frenzy as the blond cried out his name and whimpered words of need.
Lucius Malfoy and his wife had returned from Paris that afternoon and they joined the family for dinner. It was served in the formal dining room, where they normally ate holiday meals or entertained large gatherings.Narcissa watched her extended family closely as they made small talk or shared school stories. Near his grandmother, Heath sat in a transfigured high stool and played more than ate his meal. Harry was on his other side, while Draco sat across, near his father. The woman was so intent on what Caesar was saying, that she had yet to notice the boy putting his bowl of soup near her elbow. “So, you have no plans to enter politics, Mr. Zabini?”
“No, I think my father can handle all of that.”
“Then, you and James will be surviving on his income?”
James spluttered out his wine, while Draco looked down at his steak and Lucius cleared his throat from the head of the table. James' position left him directly opposite the eldest Malfoy. “Caesar is interested in spell development. He's going to intern with Uncle George and help with the shop. Uncle George is paying him as a clerk, for the first year.”
“And where do you two intend to live? Surely, not here?” Narcissa continued with mock innocence. Harry knew her better, after all the years he'd spent under her roof and from the years after the war. “A young couple needs to get a place of their own, to learn about sharing and compromise.”
“A couple?” Lily asked, her voice soft and pliable, but her face a mask of indifference. She too had learned a lot from the woman. “When did you become a couple? I'm sure I would have heard about that?”
“Lils, it's not like . . . .”
“I wanted to tell you, but Jimmie . .”
“Oh, come on, Lily. Everyone in Ravenclaw knew about it. It's not like they didn't spend time together. And really, Caesar cheered for Gryffindor whenever they weren't playing Slytherin. How dense can you be?”
It was Albus' statements that set his sister off, and once started, there was no stopping Lily. Harry, Draco and Lucius sat back and enjoyed the show. “Look here, Albus Severus. Just because you and your boy-toy are part of that group of know-it-alls, doesn't mean that I listen to the tripe and gossip you call departing information. I just assumed that My big brother would have told me something as important at that. Just like I assumed that my other brother would stop pretending he's in love with some blonde twat from Hufflepuff and just be with the blond stud he really loves. So, James. Caesar. How long have you been an item?”
The Ravenclaws were silent as they stared at the girl, but Caesar laughed and James spluttered some more. “Sorry, Lils. We were trying to keep it from hitting the rumor mills. We've only been together, officially, for a few months. I didn't know that the Eagles knew anything.”
“I think it was leaked by a the top eagles, themselves.” Caesar said giving the two fifth years a significantly withering look. Albus held his ground, but Scorpius sunk in his chair. “And I hope they won't mind when some Slytherin revenge comes their way.”
“Don't maim my brother, okay Czar?”
“Nothing lasting, I promise.”
“Okay, boys. It's unseemly for graduates to act like first years. Now, I would like to hear your answer to Narcissa's question.” Harry asserted and Lucius looked more interested.
“Well, I thought we could stay here, for a while. I know it's an imposition, but just until I finish my training and Caesar does his apprenticeship. Is that all right?”
“No, I'm afraid it isn't. I think another solution will have to be reached. I can't have you two cavorting around where Heath and the twins might come across you. I know how teen hormones can be, and that is not acceptable for small children.” Harry turned to the head of the table, where Lucius was wearing his best Slytherin mask of indifference, though his eyes had the smallest spark of humor. “I think, that Grimmauld Place would be the best answer. What do you think, Draco?”
“Grimmauld? Well, it would take a lot of upkeep, since the old elf passed on, and it has been without any care for years. You'd need to put a lot of work into it. How are your basic household spells, James?”
“Mine?”
“Yes. I know how well Caesar did on them. He's been pampered, cared for by an army of elves for most of his life. If you two are going to take on that old Black Family house, you'll be the one doing most of those spells. And who's going to cook?”
Draco's additions to the problems of the house, his conclusions about Caesar's abilities with domestic spellwork, and his lack of faith in them, drove James to adopt his most stubborn attitude, something that hadn't been a problem for the last two years, ever since he'd learned about his mother's condition, but now he narrowed his eyes and pinched his mouth in a fine line. “I can handle it. Are you giving Grimmauld to us, Dad?”
“That was my idea. I thought it would make a great graduation present, especially if you two are serious about setting up house together. If you want it, it's yours, and good luck.” Harry smiled as his son turned to the half-Italian and grinned.
“We got a house, Czar. Their giving it to us. I never thought that part would come so easily.” Harry turned to Draco as the two young men smiled across the table and the blond answered his look with a knowing smirk.
The two would never listen and they were about to learn the hard way about life and love and the limits of passion. Harry thought his son would be fine, but he knew from the last few years with Draco that they had a long road to travel.
At least, they had the support of their families to help them along the way. Harry wondered, for just a few seconds, what Ginny would have said about their son and his lover, the plans they had and the life they were about to embark upon. He thought about it, then looked at the blond man that he was married to and the thought wasn't even a memory.
“They'll be fine.” Draco said and Harry nodded.
And as hard as it would be, he knew his lover was right.
