The Sexual Education of Remus J. Lupin
Chapter 18
Lesson Eighteen: Dances With Wolves
______________________________________________________________________
The two spent the following day making up. Or rather, Sirius making what happened up to Remus. Finally, he went to bed with the resolution that in the morning, he was going to make Charlie, and Jack (Because he had a sneaking suspicion they were in on this together) pay for their love potion prank. What came next was the most spectacular showing of revenge that Sirius had ever done in his entire life. With the help of James and Peter, Sirius had managed to decorate the entire Great Hall with magical, moving photos of Charlie and Jack in compromising positions, the words “Slut” and “Wanker” and “Git” written all over them. While it managed to make everyone, including Remus, laugh hysterically, it still landed the three boys in detention for a week, and lost them 50 points from Gryffindor a piece.
Though he hated spending time away from Remus, that week's worth of detention was more than worth it, being that Charlie and Jack would never be able to live any of that down, and after a week, their photos were still being passed around the school. He considered it, all in all, a very successful bit of revenge. It still didn't really clear up the guilty feeling he felt in his stomach for doing what he did with Charlie, even though it wasn't his fault. The dark haired boy had resigned himself to simply begging for forgiveness whenever he could, when an opportunity arose, in the form of a notice on the common room notice board. In bright, bold lettering, the notice read “END OF THE YEAR BALL, CELEBRATING ALL THOSE LEAVING, AND ALL THOSE RETURNING NEXT TERM.” In much smaller print read “STUDENTS WHO ARE WANTING TO PERFORM AT THE BALL, SIGN UP ON THIS SHEET AND GIVE ALL MUSIC TO YOUR HEAD OF HOUSE.” There was more to it than that, but all that Sirius really cared about was the fact that he now had a chance to make Remus feel special.
The only trouble was, Sirius was terrible with words. He'd have to write a song, of course, but that was the problem. He was just..incapable of doing anything like that. Writing a song? That was almost like asking Sirius to spread his wings and fly. But, he'd do it, because he loved Remus, and Merlin help him, he was going to make up for that damn love potion fiasco, whether it killed it or not. So there he was, in the library of all places, chewing on the end of his Quill, staring down at nearly blank parchment. If only he could just channel Remus for a second. Then he'd surely be able to write the best song ever.
Though Remus felt a little bit bad for Charlie and Jack (since as far as he knew, Jack hadn’t had anything to do with it), the prank was, in fact, quite humorous. Beyond that, though, it seemed to have nudged the two younger boys in the right direction, and they could be seen together at almost all times of the day or night. It was almost cute, really, watching the obvious signs of young love. It reminded him of how he felt the first time Sirius had told him he loved him, and that feeling that he still had, of always wanting to be with Sirius.
The only thing was, though, that Sirius had been overdoing things a bit lately. He’d been leaving Sirius love notes all over the place, and kissing him so much that Remus’ lips were a bit bruised and cut from all the intense making out they were doing. Currently, though he loved Sirius with all his heart, he was enjoying a bit of a break from the boy. Sirius had gone off to do something secret, no doubt another big surprise for Remus, and though Remus was hoping it wouldn’t be anything too extravagant, he was happy for the time to simply relax and read a book on his own.
His eyes flickered to the clock, though, and he was slightly surprised to see how late it actually was. Sirius still wasn’t back? That was worrisome. So, Remus got himself up out of his bed and dug into his drunk, pulling out the marauder’s map to see just where he’d gotten himself to. The...library? Well, that was about the last place he’d expected Sirius to be. But, seeing as the library would be closing any moment, Remus wanted to catch him.
Though his lips ached, he was really missing Sirius. Sure, he’d wanted a bit of a break, but after four hours of being alone, he was more than ready to see his love again. So, he headed down to the library.
“Sirius, what are you working on that’s so important that I can’t be with you? You are with me when I study all the time!” he pointed out, as he approached the boy, finding him sitting at a back table.
Sirius had been working diligently, sort of, on this song for Remus for Merlin only knew how long. He barely even noticed that the lights were dimming and the students around him had slowly dwindled until he was the last one there, which was a rarity all on it's own. So when he heard the voice of the boy he was writing that very song for, Sirius jumped, scattering his ink pot and quill across the table, losing all progress he had on the song. “FUCK.” He said loudly, attempting to sop up what was left of his song, though to be fair, it was probably rubbish anyways.
“Hey Remus.” He said offhandedly, balling up the paper and tossing it in a waste basket near him, which was holding all of the scrapped songs he had attempted. “It's nothing.” He continued, grabbing his bag and throwing all his stuff into it, slinging it over his shoulder. “You ready to leave?” He asked, not really looking the other boy in the eye, and directly avoiding the question about what he was working on. A blush had slowly started creeping up his neck. If only he could get Remus' help with this. But that would be completely beside the point. The only other person he knew that was remotely smart and good at their studies was Lilligan, but that wasn't going to help him much.
It was then that Sirius had the brilliant idea to consult his other best friend, who just so happened to be dating the second best in their year. “Wait.” He said quickly, shoving his bag up on his shoulder a bit more, before going around the table. “I've got to meet someone. I'll see you back in the dormitory later, yeah?” And with that, knowing full well that Remus was probably going to be extremely suspicious, Sirius sprinted out of the library, and towards the common room, hoping that he could get there before Remus did, so he could pull James away.
Remus had been expecting an instant snog or something from Sirius, not for the boy to flail about, knock over a pot of ink, curse, then rush off to ‘meet someone’. Remus wasn’t to insecure by this point, to think that Sirius was cheating on him. He knew though, that people less confident in their own relationships would probably have jumped to that conclusion, but he didn’t.
Instead, he simply figured Sirius was up to something. Be it a prank, a surprise for him, or even just Sirius being hid odd quirky self. So, he simply sighed and headed out after him, in no hurry. He knew that he wouldn’t be able to catch up anyways.
Up in the common room, James had just bid Lily goodnight with a rather long and somewhat repulsive (depending on who you asked out of the bystanders) kiss, and was turning around to head to his own dormitory when he saw Sirius enter through the portrait hole.
“Oi, Padfoot, where’d Remus get off to? He just went to find you a few minutes ago.” he said, tilting his head curiously at his best friend.
Once he reached the common room, Sirius was out of breath, being that he had sprinted the entire way, hoping to Merlin that Remus didn't decide to chase after him. With a quick look left, and right, he walked forward, grabbed James by the arm, and tugged him to a table and chairs in the far right corner of the common room, where they would be completely alone. Before the other had a chance to speak, Sirius expelled what he had been dying to say since he stepped foot inside. “I need help.” That sounded a bit dramatic, but it was true. He threw himself down in one of the chairs, letting his bag topple off his shoulder and onto the table top.
“You know that dance?” He asked, bringing his hands up to his temples, rubbing them with his index fingers, attempting to calm the headache he had developed over the course of the past four hours, attempting to write that stupid bloody song. “There's that whole performance thing, and I'm going to do one for Remus, but I can't fucking write this song for the life of me and I just need your help.” With a groan, he had his head down on the table, forehead pressed against the wood. “Oh.” He said quickly, tilting his head up to look at James. “You're going to help me sing it.”
James stared at him for a moment, before breaking out in laughter. “Sirius since when are you a musician?” he asked, though to be honest, he couldn’t remember if he’d ever heard Sirius sing before, so he had no idea if he was any good at it. Beyond that, writing a song was no easy task! But, well, James had written a fair bit of poetry for Lily (or Lilligan, as Sirius insisted on calling her) and he had figured out a few tricks.
“I can’t really write the song for you, Sirius, because otherwise it wouldn’t be from you.” he said, picking up Sirius’ bag and reaching into it, pulling out some parchment and a quill. “But, here’s what I’ll tell you. It’s just like writing poetry, only you’ve got to put it to a melody afterwords.” he said, which was true enough. “Now, all you have to do is picture Remus in your mind. Think about him, and how you feel about him, and then just sort of...let your hand do the writing.” he said, handing Sirius the quill.
“It doesn’t have to be anything fantastically deep, just get your real feelings out there, anything at all.” he grinned a little, finding Sirius’ desperation to prove his love to Remus over and over and over a bit, well, cute. Of course, he hoped Lily didn’t notice it too much. He didn’t want her to hold him to the same standard. He simply didn’t have the energy to compete!
Sirius just stared blankly at James for a moment. Write what he felt? That would be easy if he were anyone but himself. Sirius just couldn't express himself, being that he was never really a wordsmith or anything. Heaving a sigh, he took the quill from James and stared down at the blank piece of parchment. Why couldn't he channel James? He was sure that Lilligan nearly wet her knickers at the stuff James wrote for her. Regardless, he heaved another, sort of dramatic sigh and scribbled on the parchment. “I love you I love you I love you I love you”. There. Simple, perfect. But he couldn't really make a song out of that now could he? Setting his quill down, he handed the parchment off to James for a final critique. “There. I love him. But that's not a song and I'll look like a git if I just stand there saying I love you over and over again.” The boy frowned, crossing his arms over his chest, pouting like a child. He couldn't help it, though. He wanted this to be special, at least a little bit. Why James couldn't just help him write the damn thing was beyond Sirius.
James laughed a bit and picked up the quill, staring down at the paper for a moment. “Sure you can! It’s a decent start at least.” he said, making a few bullet points below the scribbles and writing a few words. “-Having trouble saying how I feel. -I love you. -Best way to say it.” He shoved the paper back at Sirius and nodded. “Alright then, use those three things, make those the topics of the song. Write about how you’re having trouble with actually getting anything decent together, the I love you’s can be in the chorus, and then reiterate that that’s simply the best way to say it.”
Meanwhile, Remus had taken his sweet time to get back up to the tower, but he could only put it off for so long, so, just as James was handing Sirius back the paper and quill, he walked in through the portrait hole. It took him a few moments to spot them, being shoved in the corner like that, but he did manage to find them. “Oi, Sirius, you cheating on me with James now?” he shouted towards him, though he was only teasing.
Well, that didn't seem too hard, Sirius supposed. Looking at the parchment James had handed him, Sirius' eyes widened. So all he really needed to write a song about was how much he loved Remus, but couldn't say it, so I love you would just have to do, in his own words. He smiled just a little bit, having bent down to jot down something else on this paper when he suddenly heard the voice of the boy in question. Smiling even wider, folding the paper up and stuffing it in his robes, he stood, whispering a “Cheers mate, you're still singing this with me.” before walking towards his boyfriend, arms wide.
“Nah, I never fancy myself being attracted to four eye'd gits.” Sirius laughed, that tinkling sort of laughing, sneaking a glance at James before enveloping his boyfriend in a hug. He was in a much better mood, seeing as how he figured this song writing thing wasn't so bad, and his singing voice was pretty good too. Granted, he wasn't the best at it, but he certainly wasn't terrible, and he was sure that Remus would faint or do something equally adorable while Sirius sang to him anyways. “Right, so about that ball.” Sirius asked, pulling away a few inches, arms still around the other, tilting his head back towards the bulletin. “Want to go to the ball with me?” Of course he didn't really have to ask, but he figured it might be prudent to actually do it, seeing as how he was trying out that whole 'be on my best behaviour so my boyfriend doesn't hate me for snogging someone under the influence of a love potion' thing.
Remus smiled a little bit and hugged him back, and then proceeded to fake-blush at the question. “M-m-me? S-Sirius Black w-wants to go...t-to the ball...w-with me?” he stammered, putting on a good show for anyone watching. “Of course I will you git.” he said, jabbing him playfully in the ribs before kissing him on the cheek. “You know, I missed you. I really wish you’d tell me what it is you’re up to. Finding you in the library like that nearly gave me a heart attack, Sirius. Just imagine, if you actually begin to read books, you might never stop!” Well, Remus was just in a good mood. Maybe it was because the year was drawing to a close, or that he knew Sirius was obviously planning something for him, but whatever it was, he just couldn’t help himself. He almost felt like skipping down the hallways with Sirius, hand in hand. Almost.
Sirius just laughed at his boyfriend's fake stammering, bending over just a little bit when he was jabbed in the side, giving another laugh. “If I told you, I'd have to kill you.” Sirius whispered to Remus, a mock serious tone in his voice as he showed the other boy towards a sofa where they could sit. For some reason, Sirius was really happy too, though he was nervous. They would be done with Hogwarts in a little over a month, and he wasn't so sure he was ready to leave his kingdom. He was sure, though, that he'd be a legend forever, and that's all he really wanted. To be remembered, to never ever be forgotten.
It took almost the entirety of the week that was left until the ball for Sirius, James, and Peter to get ready for their performance, being that they had to check in with McGonagall, get everything set up, keep the entire operation away from Lilligan and Remus, find costumes, practice the song, and fit in their classes, mealtimes, and sleep. It was a hard road for the trio, but ultimately worth it. Sirius was never one to be nervous, but he couldn't deny the tiny little tug in his stomach that told him perhaps this wasn't going to turn out just as good as he hoped. That wasn't a good thing to feel, being that Sirius, James, and Peter were dressed, ready to go, and merely waiting on their cue to be the next ones up. Their costumes had still managed to be a surprise, what with changing in the back after escorting their dates (Peter didn't manage to score a date, but James and Sirius had to make sure Evans and Moony made it to the ball alright).
His palms were sweating a little bit, and he had to force himself to keep from wiping them on his outfit. To be fair, James had done the picking out this time, fearing that if it were Sirius' choice, they'd all be wearing leather suits and carrying whips. That was outrageous, of course, because that didn't fit the song. So, James had just decided on muggle attire, though a fancier kind, button up shirts, tuxedo jackets, and fitted black pants. Sirius felt a little silly in all of this, but he supposed he looked alright, what with the other performers being unable to keep their eyes off of him, and the fact that the boy just looked good in anything. Gulping almost in unison, the trio watched as a rather pretty looking witch ascended the stairs up to the stage, doing some sort of tap dance number or something like that, Sirius couldn't remember. All he knew was that after she was done, they'd be next.
Remus was standing out in the crowd watching the various acts going on, when he noticed that Sirius, James, and Peter had disappeared. “Lily, did James say anything about them going somewhere?” he asked the red-headed girl that was standing next to him in the crowd. Lily looked around, seemingly not having noticed the absence of the trio either, and shrugged, a puzzled look on her face. Remus sighed a little. “They’re going to miss the entire show if they don’t hurry up and get back.” he said, feeling a bit downtrodden. He had obviously agreed to go to the ball, but to go with Sirius, not with Lily. As great of friends as they were, it just wasn’t the same standing there in his slightly tattered dress robes with Lily. He wanted to be with Sirius.
The tap dancing girl finished her number and Remus clapped along with the rest of the crowd, rather non-plussed. Sure, the girl had been good, but tap dancing wasn’t all that exciting really. McGonagal was now announcing the next act. Remus didn’t hear the names, as he was too preoccupied looking around for Sirius and the others, and was just about to go looking for them when he glanced back up on the stage, and saw the three boys standing there, Sirius in the middle, James and Peter on either side. “Oh good lord.” he said, a sort of sense of dread tugging at him, as well as excitement. He had no idea if the was to be some epic going-out-with-a-bang type of prank, or something serious? You could never tell with them, really.
Sirius' heart was thudding hard against his chest. The trio could see the tap dancing girl through a small break in the curtain. She was alright, the dark haired boy thought, but not nearly as good as what the three had planned. It seemed as though she was done much quicker than he would have liked. Before he knew it, McGonagall was asking for a round of applause, she was coming back through the curtain, and their names were being called. He took a deep, steadying breath, glanced from James to Peter, and they shared a nod. A weeks worth of practice and they were ready. As Sirius ascended the steps first, in the lead, his heart didn't calm down, only quickened with excitement. He was born to entertain, after all, and was always the life of the party. Taking his place on the stage, in the center, James on his right, Peter on his life, he smiled as wide as he could. This was HIS element.
He coughed loudly, clearing the room of all chatter and applause that had came after their names being announced. With every single eye on him, including a brilliant pair of amber ones that belonged to the boy this was all done for, Sirius took a step forward, and spoke. “Right. We're here to let a couple people out there know just how special they are.” He paused, eyes staring right at Remus, smiling just for him, causing several eyes to turn to Lily and Remus. “Now, these words..are my own.” He began again, turning and walking one way across the stage, merely talking to everyone in the crowd, pausing for effect wherever he needed, James and Peter merely standing, for now. “The combination..” He continued, stopping in his walking, turning to face the crowd again, and point out with his index finger as he spoke again. “D-E-F.”
The crowd giggled and laughed at this, and the boy just kept on going. This was his moment, and he was using it to do what he was born to do, really. Turning back to walk again, he paced back to the other end of the stage. “And I was gonna lay it down for you. Try to focus my attention. But I feel so..” Another pause in his step, turning to crowd once more, pointing out for “A-D-D” More giggles and laughs, applause for the group. “I need some help. Some inspiration.” His steps took him back towards the center of the stage. “But it's not coming easily.” He frowned, causing a few collected “Awh's from the crowd.” James snickered a bit himself, unable to help it. Sirius turned that frown into a gigantic smile as his eyes stared back at Remus once more.
“Trying to find the magic, trying to write a classic.” He took a step back, closer to where he he had started from. “Don't you know?” He turned, asking James. “Don't you know?” He turned again, asking Peter this time. “Don't YOU know?” He finally faced forward, asking this same question to the audience, and mainly Remus. “Waste-bin's full of paper.” Another step back. It was getting closer and closer to the time for the actual show to start. His heart was racing, but he kept on smiling, eyes staring at Remus. “Clever rhymes, see you later.” That was it, the last of his words, he took another step back, and as soon as his foot hit the stage floor, music seemingly started playing out of no where, and the boys all sang out together. “These words are my own, from my heart flow.” James and Peter stopped singing, turning to Sirius, who sang out “I love you, I love you, I love you.”
He didn't take his eyes off Remus, James having started to look at Lily as they continued. Though they hadn't really been on stage for long, it was almost over, and Sirius was almost sad about it. Together again, they sang out “There's no other way, to better say.” Once more, Sirius' voice rang out as the other two paused. “I love you, I love you.” The music stopped, and the trio all bowed collectively. A thunderous sort of applause rang out from the crowd, all three of the boys beaming. James took the lead this time, for just a moment. “This goes out to Lily Evans..” He paused, letting Sirius speak “And Remus Lupin.” Together, Peter still smiling, though he didn't have anyone to speak to directly. “We love you.” With that, Sirius walked forward, jumped off the stage, James and Peter in tow, and made his way towards Remus. If this was his last big show at Hogwarts, he would absolutely no regrets.
Remus glanced nervously at Lily when the trio took the stage, and they both swallowed. Oh gods, what were they going to do? No doubt something completely embarrassing. Then, as the show started, he felt a slow blush creeping up his body, starting all the way down at his toes. Apparently, Sirius and James had written a song for the two of them? Perhaps, but it seemed more like Sirius’ song, since he was singing the main part, and James and Peter were only back up. Everyone around him was cheering and clapping, and he was simply frozen, staring up at the stage completely unsure about what to do. Then, it got to the part with the music, and he felt his heart melting. The song was, really, very obviously Sirius. It was simple, but oh so sweet. He had gone completely read now, from head to foot, and Lily next to him looked to be about the same shade.
Before Remus even knew it, Sirius had hopped down and the song was over, and was quickly approaching him, the entire room watching the pair of boys, Remus somehow managing to have conveniently placed himself in the center of the room. That was probably the sweetest most adorable thing Sirius had ever done for him, and there had been plenty of sweet and adorable things over the year. Remus couldn't help himself as a few tears began to roll down his cheeks. Something about the song, and Sirius coming towards him, and the ball, and everything just made it all hit him at once. Soon, they would be leaving Hogwarts. Remus had come into the school a scared little boy, and very much alone. He would be leaving as a much more confident and sure of himself individual, with the greatest friends, and the best boyfriend in the world.
He took a few stumbling steps forward until he broke into a little run, throwing his arms around Sirius and nuzzling into his chest, his eyes closed as he clung to the boy as if his life depended on it. “Sirius...I love you too...” he whispered, so soft that only the dark haired Casanova could hear.
Everyone was cheering, applauding, ooo-ing and awh-ing as Sirius approached Remus, but he couldn't hear any of it. The only sound he could hear was his heartbeat, which was so loud that it seemed to be reverberating through his entire body. Everyone else in the hall seemed to blur, until all he could see was Remus, standing there, beautiful, tears in his eyes. When the other threw arms around him, Sirius hugged his arms around Remus, smiling wide as he was told that Remus loved him back. The pair had been through a great deal in one whole year. Sirius had been kicked out, the two realized that they loved each other, they had cheated, gotten back together, cheated again, were locked in the Shrieking shack, shared holidays and birthdays, happy times, and sad times. It all seemed to be ending soon, and Sirius didn't know if he was prepared for that. A part of him wished that he would have realized how he felt about Remus sooner.
Lifting the other boy up off the ground some, Sirius spun the pair around, causing nearly everyone in the hall to cheer. It was then that McGonagall started saying something about the dance finally beginning, and music started to play. Sirius barely registered it, his eyes were still completely focused on the boy in his arms. The music was slow, and as his heart rate calmed down, the music started to fill his ears. Setting the boy down, his arms still around Remus' waist, he stood there for a moment, watching as the lights around them dimmed, the ceiling in the great hall darkening a bit, showing brilliant stars, and the moon as well. “I'm the stars.” He whispered to Remus, everyone around them pairing off to dance. “And you're the moon.” He smiled, his heart feeling so fucking happy that he could barely think. “I need you, and you need me.”
He leaned down, first laying a kiss on Remus' cheeks, and then on the boy's lips, almost melting. It seemed as though it had been years since they shared kisses, but in reality, it was only a few hours or so. The kiss was soft, but Sirius put everything he had into it, just like with the performance on stage, and everything else he passionate about. Though, if he had to make a list, Remus would be the number one thing he was passionate about, and for. The kiss broke after a moment, and Sirius smiled down at his werewolf, beaming that famous Sirius Black smile. “Do you wanna dance?”
Remus thought he might just pass out at taking everything in. He had come back down to reality, but still, the romance was continuing. The song, the darkening room, and then Sirius said it. Those words he had said that night when Sirius really, truly, admitted that he loved him. He felt his heart pick up and then skip several beats, and he couldn’t really do anything but nod in answer. So, there they stood, swaying under the enchanted ceiling along with countless other couples, holding each other as if letting go would mean the end of all time. Remus was gazing up into Sirius eyes, wondering just how he’d managed to get so damn lucky. He leaned up, pressing another kiss to his lips, standing up on his toes and tilting his head to the side, just reveling in how fantastic those lips felt against his own.
Sirius had been planning for this moment for weeks, the performance only being a small part of a much bigger plan. The truth of the matter was, Sirius had been waiting years to love someone, and his entire life for someone to love him back. All of his childhood was spent with completely conditional love. But Remus was different, and had always been different. Remus loved him for who he was, and for who he wasn't. Remus never expected anything out of Sirius that the boy couldn't give, and that made all the difference in the world. So, as a surprise for the other, Sirius has decided to leave his childhood home forever, not just for that summer. The best part of this was that his uncle, Alphard, had sent him gold to move into a flat by himself.
But Sirius didn't want to move by himself. He didn't want to be away from Remus. Truthfully, he had hoped that he could convince the other boy to move in with him. That was his future, and the only one he wanted. Sure, war was raging outside, and he was planning on joining up with Dumbledore's forces when he graduated, but he wanted Remus along with him. It had taken a lot of guts to even think about asking Remus to do this with him, and for him, even for someone who was seemingly fearless. When the other boy kissed him, Sirius melted into it, their surroundings falling away, until it seemed as though they were the only ones on the floor.
When the kiss broke, Sirius smiled down at Remus, chewing on the edge of his bottom lip for a moment. It was now, or it was never, and he couldn't have asked for a more perfect moment. “Hey.” He began, getting the attention of the other in his arms. “Truth or dare?” Of course, Remus picked truth, because Remus was never one for doing dares right off the bat. With another smile, Sirius took a deep breath, chewed a bit harder on his lip, and spoke the thing he had been waiting to do for weeks. “Remus Lupin, do you or do you not want to move in with me after we graduate?” Simple, clean, to the point. If he could, he would have crossed his fingers for luck, because he wasn't sure he could deal with the answer if it was no.
Remus had felt a sort of rush of nostalgia when Sirius said ‘truth or dare’. That had been the very game that lead them down this twisted path of love, and Remus was more than grateful that they had decided to play it that night. It had been ten and a half months now as well, since it all started. So, of course, just like he always did, Remus picked truth as his first choice, just like he always did.
He had to pause slightly when Sirius asked him that, though. Move in...with him? Like, live together, like a real couple would do. Once again, he found himself going pink. He wasn’t sure if Sirius realized how big of a deal that really was. Of course, they sort of lived together already at Hogwarts, what with spending every night in one or the other’s bed, and sharing meals together, and what not, but...This would be JUST him and Sirius. They would be going out into the real word together. Getting jobs, managing bills and all that stuff, having to cook and clean and all that. And...Sirius wanted to do that all with him.
He almost started to cry again, but he managed to bite back the tears as he simply nodded, staring up into Sirius eyes. “I do want to.” he said, his voice a bit shaky. He then threw his arms around him for a second time and kissed his neck since it was the closest bit of skin he could find. “Oh, Sirius.” he said, standing back for a second and grinning just a bit. “Remember that dare I gave you? Make be believe that you love me?” he said. “Well, this better not all be because of that.” he teased. Of course, he knew Sirius really loved him, but he just had to remind him of that.
Sirius was aware of the kind of responsibilities that came with living on his own, but he also knew that the only person in the world he wanted to do any of that with was Remus Lupin. Maybe James, but if he remembered right, James was asking Lilligan the same sort of question that he was asking Remus. He had a fleeting thought about all four of them moving in together, along with Peter, but thought was quickly swept to the side, being that he didn't think he could live with Lilligan, or Peter for that matter. Smiling wide, he hugged his arms around Remus' waist. Had it really been that long? Since that fateful day, where he had convinced Remus to get drunk, play truth or dare. The rest, it seemed, was just history. Their history. He leaned down, kissing Remus' head, nuzzling his cheek against the other boy's hair.
“I made you believe that I love you because I love you, and I'm pretty positive you'd know if I was lying to you.” The boy had a point, Remus had gotten quite good at deciphering the half truths, from Sirius and other people. He smiled again, nuzzling his nose against Remus' nose. It was an adorable, homey sort of moment. That was, until they were interrupted by an overly excited James, and a very bright Lily Evans. “DID'YA DO IT PADFOOT?” James asked, clapping his dark haired friend on the back. Sirius laughed and looked right at Remus, rubbing the back of his neck with one of his hands. “Yeah.” He admitted sheepishly. It was a little uncharacteristic for Sirius to be sheepish, but he did just ask Remus to move in with him, which was a serious sort of discussion.
James jumped, then enveloping both the boys in a hug, pulling Lily in with them, Peter coming from the side, as if he had been watching this, and joining the hug. “Oi, Lilligan.. Sirius commented, hugging the group collectively, the biggest grin he could muster plastered all over his features. “Remus and I are coming 'round your house all the time now, just so you know.” James smirked and glanced at his blushing redhead, who swatted at him a little bit. The girl was obviously still reeling from the entire situation, but to be fair, Sirius was sure that Remus was equally embarrassed about this entire ordeal.
Remus jumped slightly when James came over, shouting loudly over the music to ask Sirius if he’d done it. He didn’t need to answer, though, based on the look of slight bewilderment, and delirious happiness that was plastered to Remus’ face. He simply clung to Sirius side, glancing over at James, Lily, and Peter. “I can’t believe it’a all over.” he said, glancing up at the enchanted sky once more.
They had spent seven years there together. It was strange, really, to go back and think about all the different adventures they’d had. All the drama, all the pranks, all the love that was now being shared in their little group. Remus couldn’t help but wonder for a fleeting moment how different his life would be now, if he hadn’t stumbled into that train compartment where James, Peter, and Sirius had been sitting together.
Looking back over all the events and what not, Remus probably should have pieced things together before him and Sirius had managed to do it themselves. He’d always been the closest with Sirius. Ever since first year, even, when Sirius had stayed up all night with him, crying. Remus had hugged him as tight as he could, he remembered that night so well. It was only about a week in to the school year, and Sirius had been sent a howler from his mother. She was angry about him being sorted into Gryffindor, and the screaming red letter had spouted rageful words, though the most frequently used and memorable were ‘blood traitor’.
So, up in the dark dormitory of Gryffindor Tower, Sirius had crept over to Remus’ bed to see if he was awake. Remus still didn’t know why he’d chosen to talk to him about it over James or Peter, but he had. The night had ended with Remus holding Sirius in his arms as the two boys slept. Back then it had been so innocent. Now when they shared a bed, it usually lead to...not so innocent things.
Remus felt himself being pulled down to reality once more as Sirius tugged on his arm to get him to start dancing once more. He looked up at him and smiled just a little. “Sorry, I got lost in the memories.” he said, standing on his toes to kiss him on the lips.
Seven years together, all four of them, the best friends anyone could ask for. Sirius was thankful, though he would probably never admit it, to have Remus, James, and Peter in his life. They were his happy place, after all. And then Remus. Oh gods, Remus. It amazed Sirius still, how well they had taken to being together. Though, he supposed it had always been that way. Remus was the home he always ran to when he was afraid, or when he couldn't understand something. Just like he had clung to the boy in first year, and how he had clung to the boy at the muggle moodies. Sirius, in reality, had always felt drawn towards the other boy. It only made sense, in the end, that his pull towards Remus turned into an all encompassing sort of love between them. Dark eyes scanned over Remus' face, the boy seemingly lost in thought. “Hey, penny for your thoughts?” He'd asked, to which Remus just replied with being lost in memories, before kissing Sirius.
The dark haired boy wrapped his arms back around Remus' waist, lifting him up just slightly, his toes barely brushing against the ground as they kissed. James and Lily had decided now was the perfect time to snog, and Peter had ran off to get drinks for the lot of them. It was then that Sirius had a thought. One linger, ever lasting sort of thought. He broke away from the kiss, a sort of gleam in his eyes. “Oi Remus..” He began, lowering his voice, letting the boy down and taking his hand. “How's about we go out on the grounds?” He smirked, winking at Remus before holding onto the boy's hand tighter, and tugging him towards the door.
Before they knew it, they were running, through the Entrance Hall, and out onto the grounds. The night was cool, the air was fresh, and the sky was fucking beautiful, just like the night they had spent in James' field. Sirius was laughing, because in that moment, nothing could touch him. He was purely happy. He stopped running after they reached the lake, their reflections hidden in the murky looking water. Dark eyes scanned over the lake, then over the rest of the grounds. Hogwarts really was beautiful, and for years, it had been his place of safety. But when those dark eyes looked back to Remus, Sirius couldn't help but smile. Deep down he knew that he didn't need Hogwarts anymore. Everything he had ever needed, shelter, warmth, love, a home, was all wrapped up in his beautiful werewolf. And perhaps, really, it had always been that way.
