Hello everyone and welcome back! The previous note has been replaced with Chapter 17 so if you haven't read that yet please do so.
I want to mention that there is mentions of torture and death in this chapter. I wanted to give warning just in case.
The smells of the city surrounded him letting him know that he was somewhere in London. The smell of the fumes made his nose curl in disgust. There was the faint smell of grass and trees telling him there was a small park close by; somewhere. He could feel Severus standing beside him with Dante on his other side. Edge had thought Dumbledore slightly mad when he agreed to let Dante accompany them to this secret place but who was he to argue. Severus was tense with the other vampire so close and Edge could not blame him what with past interactions. Edge moved slowly after Severus, keeping a tight hold of the mans arm. He could not see nor hear where they were. It unnerved him to be so crippled even momentarily. He knew Dante felt the same. Edge knew why he agreed to such measures but could not say the same for Dante. What was the older vampire up to?
Suddenly the smells of the city was gone closely followed by a musty smell of old house only slightly lived in. It smelt damp and moldy. Edge blinked as sight was returned to him and winced as he could suddenly hear screeching coming from further in the house.
“What…in the hell?” Dante growled.
The horrible noise stopped suddenly with a bang. Edge could hear Sirius cursing through the walls. “What was that?” He rubbed his now sore ears.
“A wretched woman.” Severus deadpanned. “Best be quiet until we get upstairs or she’ll start her screeching again.”
They followed Severus silently up the stairs and into a large study. Edge was cautious and nervous of Dante at his back. The older dark haired vampire had done nothing yet to warrant such caution, so far, but the night was still young. The fact the Edge still did not know this Dante from the one he knew so long ago only added to the feeling. He could not predict if Dante would be a problem until the issue had already arisen and by then it was usually too late to stop events from happening. Dante; however, appeared calm yet curious as he took in their surroundings in silence.
The study was spacious with large bookshelves lining one wall and a fireplace with a blazing fire on the other. A large writers desk sat primly in front of two large windows that were blackened out from the night. It was obviously a well-used room as it did not hold the same musty scent as the rest of the house. Sirius stood leaning against the desk with his arms crossed over his chest while Remus sat almost hunched over in the armchair that sat slightly to the side of the desk in the corner. He appeared as though still in slight pain from recent burns yet his eyes held newness in them that Edge had not seen before. Almost as though there was another life looking out from within. The wolf perhaps?
Severus had moved to stand in front of the bookshelves looking tense as he stared toward the fireplace. The news of snake face realizing he had a spy had unnerved the man a bit but he held strong. If all went well, Severus could still keep his cover. Edge was going to make it his duty to attend meetings, even if out of sight, just to keep his eyes on the other man. Snake face would be working his way through his followers slowly. The hope was that Severus would be so well trusted that snake face would not even suspect the dark haired man of treachery.
Edge felt Dante move around him slightly and further into the room. There was a soft growl from Harry who was in his panther form in front of the fire. Dante only smirked at the cat as it glared at him and moved to sit closer to Severus who rolled his eyes at the beast but said nothing. Edge noticed the almost fond look in the dark orbs before it was gone. Edge smiled softly.
“I see you have made progress with the wolf.” Dante spoke. His voice sounded almost approving.
Remus glanced at the older vampire wearily. “Yes. Some.”
Edge noticed a quick shift of color to his eyes that showed blatant mistrust before his eyes returned to normal. So he was letting the wolf out more? Interesting.
“I still advise against the Wolfsbane.” Dante said the last word with significant disgust. It was clear he had no use for the potion.
“Yes, we know.” Remus sighed sitting up straighter. “There is still some time before the next moon. We are discussing it.”
Edge noticed that the werewolf’s speech pattern had changed since he last saw the man. Maybe the wolf was closer to the surface than he had thought. “There is no sense in pushing. Remus will handle things at his own pace.” He chided his Sire.
Dante scoffed. “If left to his own devices it will be years before he will be of any use.”
Two growls sounded through the room. One was from Harry, the cat like growl low and sharp. The other was from…Remus. Edge was slightly startled at that until he made note of the golden tint to his eyes. Yes, the wolf was just there under the surface and apparently was not taking kindly to being insulted so. Sirius moved closer to Remus sitting on the arm of the chair with a glare in Dante’s direction.
“I meant no insult, only truth.” Dante shrugged looking at each them in turn before continuing. “You are in a middle of a war, yes? Would it not be beneficial to hurry the bond in current circumstances?”
“Maybe.” Severus sounded thoughtful. “Yet, hurrying such a bond could also be damaging to the effort. It would not do for a disagreement to start in the middle of a fight.”
Dante shifted his sole attention to Severus. Edge felt tense suddenly for no reason he could decipher. He saw Shadow tense as well and hoped his young Childe would not cause an undue scene. “Regardless, Wolfsbane will only hinder progress. It will be best that he not use it.” He sniffed. “You are a Potions Master? Surely, you can agree at least with that.”
All eyes rested on Severus has he thought out the question. “It would make sense. Wolfsbane by itself is a poison when taken in large enough dosages and acts similarly when added to the potion itself.” He glanced over at Remus who watched the man intently. “If you really must still use it, I could lower the amount used to take away the effects slowly and over time. A weaning as it were.”
Dante huffed with an eye roll. “Even that would take too long. He should just drop it entirely.”
Severus glared at the eldest vampire. “It appears to me as though it is not up to you, is it? It would be best to let Remus do this how he and the wolf wishes to do so.”
Both Remus and Sirius gaped at the Slytherin for standing up for the werewolf. Edge stared at him in surprise as well. Harry must be changing Severus in ways even he was not aware of. How interesting and unnerving.
Dante returned the mans glare briefly. His face suddenly took on an inquisitive look. Edge did not like the feeling he was getting from his Sire. Before he could speak several things happened within seconds.
Dante had appeared behind Severus grabbing him by the arms. Severus went stiff with shock his eyes wide. His fear was palpable as Dante moved closer to his neck. Edge could just notice there was no fang before Shadow leapt at Dante over Severus, who dropped to the floor, as cat and vampire fell back into the book cases. Books rained down heavily on them.
Severus quickly moved closer to where Remus and Sirius had both moved to their feet in shock and concern. Edge had just turned to the two fighting vampires, after making sure Severus was out of harms way, before Shadow was tossed over the desk into the floor. Dante growled eyes shining and moved to grab the cat that was coming back over the desk at the older vampire.
Edge barely took a step and Dante was grabbed by a huge beast. Dante yelled in pain as it shook him by the arm like he was nothing but a doll before he was thrown across the room into the door. Edge had barely had time to move. He took a quick glance to find Dante leaning against the door, holding his bleeding arm, and appearing subdued at the moment as he grimaced in pain.
Edge looked at the beast that stood in front of the two humans and young vampire. Harry had transformed back and was standing in front of Severus who looked pale and sickly with fear.
The large wolf had its head lowered and was snarling fiercely at the perceived danger. It stood just under his shoulders, even on all fours, and was covered in course, matted fur. There were ropes of fur missing where silver had been wrapped around a frail body. As tall as it was, it was thin, the thick fur doing little to cover the bones that hid underneath. Its eyes glowed gold and its bared teeth still held remnants of blood from the bite it had delivered to Dante before it threw him. As tough as the beast was making itself look, Edge could just note the tremors under the skin of muscles and bones not used to such a transformation.
He watched Dante stand against the door from the corner of his eye, moving to stand in front of him when the wolf took a step toward him. “Enough. End this.”
The wolf growled, low and deep, at him. He heard Dante chuckle behind him. “Did not intend for the escalation, but two birds, one stone, and all that.” His voice was pained as he held onto his arm that hung lifeless beside him. Blood dripped from the wound to the floor.
Edge whipped around to face him. “What is wrong with you?” He growled. “What the hell are you trying to achieve?”
Dante rolled whiskey eyes at him. “Testing something.” He turned and walked out the door leaving the group standing in bewilderment behind him.
Edge growled, glancing quickly back at the group, before going after his Sire leaving the others in their surprised state. What the hell was going on? “Dante! You can’t leave. Dante!” His yelling woke the screeching portrait again but one glare and growl from him had the banshee hiding back behind her curtain before she could finish ‘abomination’. He flitted and stopped Dante at the door. “Wait.”
Dante stopped with a glare. “I can’t exactly heal a wolf bite quickly, as you know, and I will need to feed to heal completely. Seeing as there is no one here that will be willing I must find food elsewhere.”
“And who is at fault there?” Edge growled frustrated. “All you have done since you came back is pick fights and alienate everyone. Why did you even come back?”
“I have never been one to associate with humans. That has not changed over the years. Why bother when they perish in such a short time?” Dante leaned against the wall eyeing Edge with an emotion Edge could not understand. “I intended to just check in then leave again. Somehow I got roped into the drama.”
Edge felt pain constrict his chest at those words. He clenched his teeth together. “Then you shouldn’t have even shown your face.” Why was his Sire being like this? One minute he was warm and the next he would be ice cold.
Dante sighed. “Perhaps. What’s done is done. It cannot be changed now.” His eyes closed as he breathed deep through the obvious pain he was in.
Edge felt something in him deflate. He couldn’t hold onto his anger anymore and let resignation take over. He was growing tired of dealing with his Sire’s mood swings. “Why did you even leave in the first place?”
Dante blinked at him and sighed, shifting a bit against the wall he leaned back on. He appeared hesitant. The elder took a deep breath to gain his composure. “I got news of a rogue clan in the area. I had only intended to be gone for a short time and did not want to involve you. Darius was to go with me and we were to return the next night.” A haunted look took over Dante’s face. “Obviously, that was not what happened.”
Dread filled Edge’s stomach. Rogue clans had been prominent at the time he had been turned, he could remember that much, and had been rampant through the early years of his transition. Some of the clans had gathered at least one Animalis giving their group a trump card over the others. The wars certainly had not helped increase the numbers of his kind. He swallowed. “What happened?”
“We were captured. They were more in number than I was told. My informants had been compromised.” His dark brown eyes clenched shut. His body tensed. “They starved us for days, so by the time they came for us; we were both so weak there was no chance we could fight them off.” Dante’s voice choked and he had to swallow thickly to continue. “They held me down and tortured Darius. He would be allowed to heal then they would do it all over again. I forget how many days this went on.”
Edge stopped breathing because it hurt too much to do so. He couldn’t stop the tears that started to streak down his cheeks staining them pink. Dante opened empty eyes to stare at the door to the outside. Edge doubted he even saw it.
“Eventually they grew bored with us. I guess I should be thankful for that, for at least they ended the suffering for Darius.” He took a deep, shaky breath that seemed to rattle his entire frame. Two tears escaped his tormented eyes. “They broke his neck before tearing it off and placing it in front of me as they laughed.” His voice choked again. Edge stared at his Sire with wide eyes. There was no stopping the tears now. “Darius had been the only thing I had for centuries before I came across you. I lost it. I slaughtered every one of them.”
Edge stepped close to Dante only to have the other glare at him through pink tinged eyes. “Dante…”
“How could I come back to you, knowing what I had done? I was no better than they.”
“That’s not true. You were, are, so much better than they ever would or could be. Don’t compare yourself to them.” His voice was desperate. Had Dante really dealt with this all this time? Alone?
Dante gave Edge a sympathetic look. Edge could pick up guilt in the brown eyes. “I stayed away to keep you safe. You were the only thing I had left. I had to lead them far away from you. It worked. You made it through relatively unscathed. For that I will never regret my choice to leave you behind.”
Edge nodded as tears continued to flow. His fists clenched tight at his sides. He understood the reasoning. It did not stop the hurt from invading his whole being. He had lost both his Sire and close friend. He had been alone for so long. A few months ago, Edge would have been angry and disbelieving, but now he had a Childe of his own.
Dante shifted again against the wall as he composed himself. He attempted to move his arm but winced. The bleeding had slowed but the wound was not healing yet. Edge narrowed his eyes. His Sire needed to feed and they would not be allowed to leave without an escort.
Dante took a deep breath. “You need to keep a close eye on your Childe and the Potions Master.”
Edge blinked. What? He was silent as his mind caught up. “How come?”
Dante blinked at him in surprise. “You do not recognize what is happening?” Edge shook his head. “Of course you don’t.” Dante sighed shaking his head. He seemed disappointed. Edge bristled slightly.
“I know there is a feeding bond. Severus has been his donor for many months now.” Edge was confused. Slowly his grief faded into the background in light of this new information.
Dante laughed harshly. “There is much more than that forming between them. I’m surprised you don’t remember.”
Edge thought hard. There was something just out reach. Some memory he should remember but couldn’t. “I have no idea what you are talking about.”
“We had the same bond, once upon a time.” Dante smiled at Edge now fondly, sadly. “It protected you for years. No other vampire would dare come near you. Unfortunately, you came across the only rogue that cared less and got joy out of stealing from others.” His voice turned into a growl towards the end but quickly got it back under control tilting his head at his Childe.
“I remember the rogue but…” Edge paused. He remembered having a strong bond with Dante, they had been lovers before he was turned, and even after. He had found it strange that other vampires typically gave him a wide birth but had never thought anything of it. Until now. “What is this bond? What exactly does it do?”
“You remember our bond?” Dante stood straight when Edge nodded. “The instinct your Childe possesses has recognized the ability of transformation in your Potions Master and is slowly claiming him as his own.” Dante took in Edges surprised look. He huffed a small laugh. “I knew the minute I sniffed him. His blood is strong. He will make a strong Animalis as well.”
Edge suddenly felt his own protectiveness for the Potions Master. “Leave him alone. You’ve done enough.”
“Tonight was simply a test for my theory. I have no desire to Sire another.” His Sire still held a thoughtful look in his eyes that had Edge somewhat doubting his words, though it did explain why Edge had not seen any fang in Dante’s display earlier. His doubt must have shown on his face for Dante chuckled leaning back against the wall weakly. “I speak the truth. I will aggravate yours no longer. It does not surprise me much that you would not recognize the bond for what it is, especially if you were only paying attention to your Childe. Perhaps, you should watch and pay attention to the Potions Master instead. You may be able to better recognize the signs.”
Edge narrowed his eyes in thought. “I’ve been watching them both but…” He stopped. The fear. Every time Dante, or Edge himself, got near Severus with the intent to feed the man reacted with uncharacteristic fear. The memory of the rogue bearing down on him, holding him down as he screamed, blood being forced into his mouth even as he choked and gagged, the fangs piercing into his neck hot and painful, the unadulterated fear that he would be taken from Dante…taken from what was his… Edge clenched his eyes against the memory.
“You remember now.” Dante watched solemnly as Edge nodded, eyes still shut tight. “As the bond grows, the more protective they will be of each other, especially your Childe over the Potions Master. It could prove to be troublesome. Unfortunately, what’s done is done. There is no point in interfering now.” Dante shifted again glancing at his arm disdainfully. “I would just keep a close watch over them. Don’t allow them to take unnecessary risks.”
Edge winced. “Severus is spy. His entire life is a risk.”
Dante simply stared at him for a moment. “I see.”
When Dante offered nothing else Edge asked another question burning in his mind. “How was this done? Harry has only been feeding from Severus.” Why was there so much he was missing?
“We can feed on more than just blood, Edge.” Dante shook his head. It was unfortunate that the topic had never come up before. Yet another regret he would have to bare. “Magic has been involved. Feeding bonds are just blood. Family bonds are made with the sharing of magic. Pair bonds are made when both are shared. If one can be turned, then the only thing left to do would be sharing blood of a vampire and death.” His face turned grim. “It is the one thing I regret the most in my long life. I never intended for you to be turned even though you could be, but I wanted you close, and it backfired. You were turned in a gruesome way and outside the pair bond that was formed. For that, I will be forever sorry.”
Edge shook his head. “It’s not your fault. I never blamed you. You have always been my Sire. Always will be.” Dante gave him a small smile which he returned.
“Um…sorry to interrupt.” Both vampires turned to look at Sirius standing at the end of the hall. “We’ve contacted Dumbledore. He will be sending a donation. You are not to leave.”
Dante snorted but Edge nodded. “Thank you.” Sirius glanced between them giving Edge a meaningful look. Edge was touched by the mans concern. “We are fine, Sirius. I’ll be back up to check on everyone shortly.” Sirius gave them another glance before turning and going back to the study.
“You’ve gathered the most interesting members for your makeshift clan.” Dante mused. Edge did not bother to argue. They had become very close to him.
“It’s a shame you have basically alienated every one of them.”
Dante gave him an sad, amused smile. “I don’t have the best history when it comes to humans. I kept one for a while. An Edgar Davenport, I believe his name was.” He gave a smirk when Edge glared at him. “I do wonder what happened to him.” The sarcasm dripped in his words though amusement shown in his eyes.
Edge glared harder. “Shut up.” He growled. Yet he smiled when his Sire laughed. It was a true laugh, one he had not heard in decades. Maybe, just maybe, despite everything, they could be okay.
