Chapter Eighteen: Semper Vigilia Super Vos (Always Watching Over You)
The train pulled slowly into the station, James and Sirius hopped off onto the platform followed by Remus and Peter. They were swept up in the crowds but managed not to get separated, when they stood at the barrier Sirius gazed at it sadly, James stood at his side and slid his hand surreptitiously into his. Sirius glanced at him and smiled slightly, he tightened his fingers around James’ and together they stepped through the barrier.
They came out the other side and the four boys spotted their parents, with a sharp tug on Sirius’ hand he pulled him into a nearby waiting room. It was empty and James made sure they were hidden, while Remus waited outside, guarding the door, he dug around in his trunk. “Here...” He pushed a brown wrapped, square package into Sirius’ hands. “Take it and never, ever let it leave your side.” He breathed, pressing his forehead to Sirius’.
“What is it?”
James lifted his hand and put it on the side of Sirius’ face. “It’s a mirror...a special mirror designed to allow us to communicate when we can’t use owls or floo powder...”
Sirius gazed at the precious thing in his hands and felt a smile tug at his lips, he flicked his eyes back to James’ and kissed him softly. “Thank you, James.” He whispered and his eyes closed as James deepened the kiss, their tongues met and they both let soft moans slip out. James pushed Sirius back into the wall of the Waiting room and kissed him with more passion, his hands tangling in Sirius’ thick hair while Sirius wrapped his arms tightly around his neck. “I can’t...” Sirius breathed as they pulled away from each other, he shut his mouth on his words.
“We can. We have to.” James replied and kissed him again.
Sirius had no idea what was happening but he felt warmth spread through his chest, he pulled himself as close to James as possible, kissing him as if it was the last thing he was ever going to do. He could feel James’ grip on his shirt as it tore slightly, his body tingled pleasantly and he never wanted the moment to end, but...
Bang!
Sirius broke apart from James and they turned to the door where Remus stood talking loudly to someone, his speech deliberate as he tried to warn them. “No Mrs. Potter, I’m sorry, I haven’t seen him...I think he went this way...” Remus wandered off, distracting Dorea Potter long enough for Sirius and James to share one last, longing glance and slip through the door.

Sirius sat at his window, his head rested on his hand as he tapped his quill against the empty parchment absently. He smiled softly to himself as he remembered the past few days of school, full of nothing but drowning himself in intense, exquisite pleasure and James’ scent. He sighed and pushed hair from his eyes, humming absently he began to sketch. His eyes slipped slightly out of focus, his hand moving as if of its own accord, he drew James. He drew James wearing nothing as he lay on his bed, surrounded by cloth. He drew him as he saw him; beautiful with messy hair splayed across crimson sheets, eyes closed and head tilted to the side. He filled in the shadow so that light appeared to fall across his body, he hummed happily as he worked, completely oblivious to his surroundings.
It was not the only drawing he did. Sirius kept all his drawings in a private stash, a silver box locked with magic sat beneath his bed and he squirreled all his private things away inside. No one ever knew about that box, it was his secret.
When his parents went out Sirius went to the old piano and played, the only two to ever see him were Kreacher and Regulus. Regulus watched hidden behind the door, he sat and watched Sirius’ profile, perfectly content to enjoy his brother’s talent. He gazed in fascination as Sirius’ talented hands danced over the keys, producing the most magical sounds Regulus had ever heard, it took his breath away.
Sirius sat at the piano one day and lost himself in music, he had yet to do anything to really anger his parents so he was free to do what he wished. He played, all the while thinking of James. He didn’t notice his little voyeur, his brother kept his distance and stayed silent finding that at these times, when Sirius was most vulnerable that they were closer than they had ever been. Reg enjoyed watching Sirius’ face transform, he looked like an angel sat at the piano with his eyes half-closed and that tiny, knowing smile on his lips. Regulus couldn’t help but smile in response, his love for his brother was by no means diminished even if their views clashed, he would protect Sirius until the end if he had to, he just wished he could see the folly of his decisions.

“Sirius, would you pass me the gravy?” Walburga watched as Sirius obeideintly stood and picked up the gravy boat and handed it to his mother, she was suspicious of the way he had been acting recently. He was subdued but there was a smile on his lips that rarely left, his eyes hid some kind of secret and Walburga was determined to get to the bottom of it. “Oh, Orion, Dear...did you hear that Narcissa has invited us around to Malfoy Mannor.”
“That’s wonderful. When will we be going?”
“This week end, she says that Lucius has been working ever so hard to make sure everything is perfect for our arrival.”
“Very good of him, our Narcissa has certainly made a good choice.”
“Indeed. Well, it will only be a few years before our Sirius himself will marry.” Walburga looked over at her eldest son and watched him carefully.
Sirius’ shoulders tensed but he kept his eyes down as he chewed slowly before swallowing. “Of course mother.” He said in a monotone.
“Lyra is a very pretty girl, she will make you a good mate.”
“Yes, mother.”
“She may be older than you, son, but I promise the contract will be sealed.” Orion said, sitting back as he picked up a glass of wine. Kreacher moved in silently and began removing plates. “We expect you to be on your best behaviour, you will be meeting her tomorrow.”
With a clatter Sirius’ fork fell onto his plate, he clenched his hand into a fist and took a deep breath. “Yes sir.” He breathed and looked up. “May I leave the table?”
“Not until after dinner, we still have trifle.” Walburga replied.
Sirius gritted his teeth, his hand shaking where it rested on the white linen. “I’m not hungry, mother.” He said slowly, desperately trying to control the rage flooding his system.
“You will sit and wait for everyone at this table to finish, young man.” Orion said sternly.
Regulus watched his brother from the corner of his eye, he could feel the tension swirling around and could only silently beg Sirius to sit down and accept that he was going to meet Lyra whether he liked it or not. Please, Sirius. Please, don’t make a scene. Don’t argue! I’m tired of the arguments! The litany swirled in his head, he tried to project his thoughts to Sirius who seemed impervious.
There was silence for a long time until Sirius stood, the chair fell to the floor with a clatter. Orion glared at him while Walburga’s face paled with anger. “Sit down this instant!” She said in a soft and dangerous voice.
“No.” Sirius breathed, his chest aching with sheer force of his fury. “I’m sick and tired of you controlling every aspect of my life! I’m not a child! I can think for myself! What if I don’t like Lyra? What if I don’t want to marry?! What if there’s someone else?!”
Regulus gasped, his eyes widening while his parents shifted in their seats. Slowly Orion stood. “If we could trust you to make an appropriate choice, we would have allowed you to choose your own wife. However, you have proved time and time again how incapable you are of choosing what is right for this family. I am warning you, Sirius, if you do not sit down right now I will punish you.”
“Lyra will be a good match, she is not only pretty but she has the correct blood. You would produce well-bred children, such a union will be good for you and this family...unless you have another appropriate suggestion, then we will meet her and if she is truly who you wish to marry we will dissolve the arrangement.” Walburga looked at her son who was shaking with suppressed rage. “Well?”
Sirius’ face twisted, he wanted to shout a name. He wanted to declare to the whole room that he wanted only one person, only one person could he imagine spending the rest of his life with...but he looked across the table and he saw his father’s face...slowly he lowered his head. “No...no there is no one else.” He said in a quiet voice.
“Very well then, sit down Sirius so we may finish dinner in peace.”
Sirius picked up his chair and Regulus breathed a sigh of relief, until he saw Sirius push the chair under the table and walk away. “I’m done.” He said and they heard his feet pounding the stairs.
“Orion, sit down and eat, we will deal with him afterwards.” Walburga said to her husband.
Regulus stared at the kitchen door where Sirius had disappeared from, in the brief silence they heard a door slam and a sudden scream of fury. Kreacher placed a bowl full of trifle before him and looked at him. “Is young master feeling well?” He asked in his low, croaky voice.
“I’m fine Kreacher...Thanks for asking.” He said and patted the wrinkly elf on the arm.

The pot of Ink smashed into the wall, spattering the paper with a big blue stain. Sirius stared at it, breathing hard as if he had run a marathon. His hands shook violently as he felt another scream building in his chest, he let it out and grabbed his hair as he fell to his knees. Behind him there was a loud crack as the window smashed outwards, he lowered his head and closed his eyes tightly. “FUCK!” He screamed again, slamming his fist into the carpet. “FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!” He took in a large gulping breath before tipping his head back and gazing up at the ceiling. “I hate them.” He muttered, his eyes wide as he stared into nothing. “I hate them all. I hate them. I hate them! I hate them! I hate you ALL!”
His fury was like a whirlwind inside his head, it swept away rational thought, he was much too angry to even fear the consequences of his actions. He shuddered and wrapped his arms around himself. “James...” His darkening room absorbed his plea and he received only silence in response.

Regulus stepped out of the bathroom, as he reached his room he heard a voice. He moved to the door and peered in through the tiny gap.
“YOU UNGRATEFUL LITTLE BLOODTRAITOR!” Orion shouted, he lifted his hand and backhanded Sirius across the face. Sirius fell into his desk, hitting his hip and gasping at the pain. A hand reached down and grabbed his hair, he was yanked off his feet and thrown into the wall. “You dare to defy your mother?! You dare to defy this family?!”
Sirius reached up with both hands and tried to pry his father’s fingers off his hair, tears streamed down his face which was twisted in agony. “F-Father...” He gasped before Orion dropped him and kicked him in the stomach. Sirius curled up on his side, he couldn’t breathe. His chest burned as he gripped his stomach and choked.
“You useless, pathetic squib! How could you be a son of mine?! You are nothing! You are worthless! Your brother is ten times better than you will ever be! You tell me you won’t marry the girl? I say you will do exactly as you’re told or we will give you to Bella and her husband! Do you know what they will do to you? They will ruin that pretty face, they will make you know pain you have never even dreamt of before, is that what you want, boy?!”
With great difficulty Sirius managed to shake his head. “N-No...” He whispered into the carpet, he could taste blood and he could feel it trickling down his face from where he must have hit his head. He took a shuddery breath and coughed. Regulus winced in sympathy, he closed his eyes as Orion Black sat down on the bed.
“Come here Sirius.”
Sirius could hardly move, his body shook with pain but he gritted his teeth and forced himself to push himself onto all fours and crawl towards his father. Orion put his hand under Sirius’ chin and forced his head up, his grey eyes were unfocussed and a trickle of blood ran down his chin. “You’re pathetic.” His fingers tightened on Sirius’ jaw so he could hear the bones crunch. “What are you?”
“P-Path-Pathetic...” Sirius muttered. “I’m...pathetic...”
Orion nodded. “I can only hope that your brother does not follow in your footsteps, so far he hasn’t, for which both your mother and I are grateful but there is always a chance...” He sighed and released Sirius who remained on his knees. “After Tomorrow your mother will lock you in your room where you will be unable to do anymore harm, we will see to it that you do not contact those filthy friends of yours and we will ensure that you get only the barest essentials...”
“Y-yes father...” Sirius croaked, his throat raw from screaming.
“Until you see the error of your ways and stop this ridiculous rebellion you will not be contacting any of those friends of yours...”
“NO!” Sirius shouted as his father picked up his Raven and writing equipment, he grabbed his father’s robes. “No! No! Please! Don’t take them away from me!” He cried desperately. “I-I’ll...I’ll do anything! I’ll be good! I promise! Father please...!”
Orion spun around, Regulus winced and missed the movement but he heard the loud snap of shattering bones and Sirius’ scream rent the air. When he looked back Sirius was lying on his back and cradling his arm to his chest, his whole body wracked by sobs. “Sirius, you really are worthless...” Orion sneered in disgust as his son sobbed on the floor. “I’ve changed my mind, after this meeting tomorrow you’re going to your Cousin’s house to learn to become a man. Perhaps some time with the Lestrange’s will make you and you will forget about these traitors you have been calling friends...” He turned and left.
Regulus dived into his own room, he leaned against his wall with his head tipped back as he heard his father’s footsteps on the stairs. He could hear his brother’s crying through the thin walls and he felt tears sting his own eyes, he lifted his hands to his face and sank down the wall once again wishing he was stronger, wishing he could find some way to protect Sirius...or even find some way to convince him to be a better pureblood...because he despised watching him hurt.

Sirius must have lost consciousness at some point, not that he remembered doing it but he woke lying huddled on his floor his body aching and his broken armk throbbing where his father has stamped on it. He muffled a sob in his arm as he tried to move, but agony made him black out.
He came around again to the sound of a soft voice;
“Siri, here...drink this...Pomfrey gave it to me once when I broke my wrist after Bran hit me with that Bludger...”
Liquid poured into his mouth and he had no choice but to swallow, it didn’t taste of much but when it was taken away he felt a burning sensation in his twisted arm.
“I-I’m not sure if this will help...I don’t know much about broken bones...”
Slowly Sirius opened his eyes and after they had focussed he saw his Brother’s worried face. He blinked slowly. “Reg?” He croaked.
“Yes, it’s me.” Regulus was sat on Sirius’ bed beside his brother, he was pale and frightened looking and Sirius saw he had a darkening bruise under his eye.
“Wha’s that?” Sirius mumbled lifting his hand and touching the bruise, Regulus flinched away.
“Nothing...”
Slowly Sirius’ head began to clear and he managed to sit up, he frowned and reached with his good hand for his brother. He managed to wrap a hand around the back of his head and pulled him so their foreheads touched. “No matter what happens to me, Reg...Never fucking lie to me.”
Regulus looked guilty. “After father punished you I snuck downstairs to get you this and some painkilling potion...Mum caught me and father hit me as a warning.”
Sirius tensed, his eyes darkening dangerously. He looked through his fringe at Regulus and noted how small he was, how tiny he appeared in comparison to himself. He gritted his teeth. “He’ll never do it again while I’m in this house. Even if I have to ensure I take twice the amount of beatings, Regulus, I will make sure that bastard never lays another hand on you.”
“You can’t...If you just stopped trying to...”
Sirius sighed and smiled weakly. “Reg, no matter what I do, no matter how hard I try I can’t measure up to you.” He stroked hair from his brother’s face noting how they could have been twins if not for the year separating them. “You’re the good one. You’re the perfect Slytherin son...keep being that. Keep being who you are and never stop...know that I’m protecting you, even at school.”
Regulus felt tears sting his eyes as he looked at his brother, bruised and battered but still trying to protect him. “I don’t need it.” He said quietly. “I’m not good...I’m not perfect I...I get worse grades than you!”
Sirius laughed and winced. “They only care about bad grades if I get them, you know that Reg. Like I said, you’re perfect.” He kissed his brother on the forehead.

That night, after the potion was well at work on his arm, Sirius leaned over his bed and dug out his silver box. With difficulty he got it onto the covers and dug around inside it until he found the brown wrapped package, he tore off the paper and gazed at the perfect mirror. “James Potter.” He breathed and waited, he didn’t have to wait long.
“Sirius!” James’ face appeared in the mirror, his hair was messier than it usually was and he was wearing pyjama’s. He frowned and scanned Sirius’ bruised and swollen face. “Holy shit!” He gasped. “What happened?”
Sirius merely shook his head. “Doesn’t matter, Jamie.” He said and tried to smile. “I’ll be alright...I...I just wanted to see you...I needed to hear your voice...” He closed his eyes. “I need you with me.” He breathed. “I need you James.” His hands shook slightly as he gripped the mirror tightly in his hand. “I...I’m going to be sent away for the rest of the summer...James, they’re going to send me to Bella’s...”
“Bella?” James frowned, he didn’t like the terror in Sirius’ voice, or the way the mirror’s reception was shaking.
“My cousin. Bellatrix Lestrange.” He opened his eyes and saw James’ face whiten in shock.
“Holy shit...” He breathed. “That...that murderer is your cousin?!”
Sirius nodded slowly. “I don’t know where she lives...only a few people do but her husbands secret keeper of their house...O-Only he can...Jamie...Jamie...I’m scared...” his eyes suddenly seemed to fill his face and his shaking increased. “I know what they’re like! They’re sadists! They’re...”
“Death Eaters.” James whispered. “What can I do? How can I help you?”
Sirius licked his lips and shook his head. “Nothing.” He muttered. “Nothing at all...”
“There has to be something!” James looked as scared as Sirius.
“She won’t kill me, she’s not like that...she likes to play with her food does Bella...” Sirius let out a soft huff of humourless laughter. “I don’t know what they will do but I suspect it won’t be pleasant...”
“Sirius, whatever you do make sure you don’t lose this mirror...I want regular updates on your safety...”
“I won’t be able to James! Not without you getting in trouble...no, this is my problem. I have to go.” Sirius shoved the Mirror under his bed and rolled himself in his blankets just as the stairs creaked indicating someone walking past. When they were gone he sighed and rolled onto his back, he gazed up at the canopy of his bed without seeing it. He pictured Bella’s beautiful face and that of her husbands, a shudder ripped through him. “Shit...” He breathed into the night.
