Time to find out how Hermione is doing. There is also the aftermath of her accident. Thanks for reading the story!
Living: Chapter 18:
Coming out of a foggy existence, and what seemed like a bad dream, Hermione slowly awakened the next day. Peeling her tired eyes open she noticed several dark shapes around her that soon turned into forms of people that she knew. Her handsome Slytherin lover was draped over her bed in what looked like an uncomfortable position, and he was holding onto her hand with a fine grip. His slow, deep breaths showed he was fast asleep. Over on the sofa were Harry and Ginny curled up with each other slumbering. They both looked like they had been through a battle in their dirty clothes and smudges on their faces. Now though, they all looked so peaceful sleeping; but her being in a hospital gown, in a hospital bed at St. Mungos was not a good sign of her well-being. What had happened that had put her in the hospital? Her memory was fuzzy, and the more she tried to recall what happened, the more she couldn't recall anything. She realized, that often the brain protected the rest of the body in the healing process by hiding short-term memory recall. She had read that there is something going on in the brain that prevents people from making sense of their own stories called "disorganized attachment". Oh bother! She really wanted some answers now, but knew it could be a few days before she remembered anything.
"Severus," she whispered, realizing how hoarse her voice was. "Severus, " she tried calling out a little louder. The man was dead to the world and wasn't budging at all. Hermione tried stemming the frustration she was feeling at not being able to wake him up. Looking around the white walled, dreary hospital room, she frankly was bored. There was not a book in sight. She was hungry and thirsty to top off everything else that was wrong at the moment. If only she had her wand then she would be able to get some help and some answers.
As if he felt how she was feeling, Severus woke up with a start. His body jumped and he almost fell out of his chair. His wide eyes turned towards Hermione showing surprise that she was awake. "Hermione, love…" no more words came, but he lunged towards her hugging her tight against him. His familiar scent put her at ease as he kissed the top of her unruly hair. She could tell that it was a bigger mess than it normally was, but this man for some reason still was attracted to her.
"When did you awaken? Are you still in pain? I need to go find your healer." The words came tumbling out in a jumble, so unlike the normally calm Professor Snape's speaking pattern.
"Severus," her hand moved onto his arm, "Severus." He stopped to look at her as she spoke. "I'm not dead." She said groggily. This made the staunch man start laughing so hard it woke up Harry and Ginny, who neither had ever heard the man laugh so hard, let alone even laugh at all.
"What's so funny?" Harry asked standing up to walk over to his friend. His bedhead was giving hers a run for the money. This only made Hermione giggle when she looked at Harry. "I have a feeling that you're laughing at me my friend." He reached down to give her a soft hug.
"Sorry Harry." Her voice croaked out. "I was trying to decide if your hair or mine looked more in shambles."
"I think you'd both win prizes for the mess currently on both of your heads." Severus's low voice replied humorously and with no malice.
"What happened? Would one of you please tell me how I ended up here?" Hermione looked from Severus to Harry, and then even over to Ginny who now was walking towards her bed.
The immediate silence spoke volumes, until Severus spoke. "I wish we had some answers love, but we don't."
"You went missing for several hours then we went to the dungeons to see if you were with Professor Snape," Ginny reached out to hold Hermione's hand. The two girls were as close as sisters, even though Hermione and Ron hadn't worked out. "I was sick to my stomach when we realized that you weren't with him."
"I'm so sorry Hermione that we weren't with you. I promised you I'd protect you and I didn't." Harry ran his fingers through his hair as he tried to hold back his tears. Hermione knew that he would try to take responsibility for all of this. This was usually what he'd do, even when it wasn't his fault.
"Harry, I don't blame you for this." Hermione sat up straight in bed. "You are not the one going around attacking people. If anyone is to blame it's me for wandering around by myself. I just thought it would be safe since it was in the middle of the day." Severus stood silently next to her, a frown upon his face. He stood with his hands clasped behind him. Hermione knew something was troubling him but wasn't sure how to get it out of him. Severus Snape really wasn't the sharing kind…at all.
"Severus, what's wrong?" Hermione reached out to touch his arm.
His eyes moved upward to look at her. She knew he wanted to say something to her, but wouldn't as long as Harry and Ginny were in the room.
She turned towards her friends and silently pleaded with her eyes and motioned to the door with her head. Ginny being perceptive, tugged at Harry's arm. "Why don't we go down to the cafeteria and get something to eat Harry?"
"I'm not really hungry Gin." Harry said.
Still tugging at his arm Ginny tried again, "Well, I am and you need to come with me." Pulling even harder she managed to jerk and push Harry out of the room with Harry still protesting that he didn't want anything to eat.
"He never would have made it on the run without you. You are the real hero to the wizarding world." Severus clipped out as he shook his head.
"Actually, it was a good combination of all of our strengths that helped us survive and win in the end." Hermione reflected back on the past several years. "But that's not what I want to talk about." Hermione clasped his large hand in hers and brought it to her chest. He leaned forward with his other hand and tilted her chin up. There was pain reflected in his eyes. "Is it something that I did?" She wondered at the grief she saw there.
Severus shook his head, "No, it's not you. This is my entire fault. I never should have let you leave after…well, after you…oh, Bloody Hell! I'm stammering like a second year after his first kiss."
Hermione just blushed as she remembered what he was stammering about that had taken place in his classroom. She'd wanted to do something for him and her little surprise had pleased them both. She had never done something like that so brazen and in a classroom to boot. "Nothing is your fault Severus and please don't think this way. I don't think I could bear it if you blame yourself."
"But you almost died Hermione. You are mine now and I take responsibility for what is mine." Hermione tried not to show how pleased she was at his words. She never thought she would want to be considered belonging to someone, but looking at the dark, and mysterious man hovering over her right now, it didn't seem so bad.
"Severus," her hand reached out to pull his head towards hers. Her lips softly pressed against his while her hands ran through his hair. He responded back in turn by smoothing down the puff of hair on her head. His lips molding to hers, nipping and tugging as if searching deeply for a missing part of her, made her feel alive again.
Too soon he pulled away ending the prolonged kiss. He ran his hand down the side of her face, his dark eyes searching looking for any clue of her falling back into a dark place. Severus turned heel without a word and rushed out of the room, leaving a confused and frustrated Hermione behind.

Severus practically ran from Hermione's room. He couldn't stay there any longer with the damning thoughts swirling through his mind. Her innocent speech of not condemning him for her accident, though he knew he was to blame, was not going to be accepted by him. He was a man who was quickly falling in love with her. It was his place to watch and care for her. He had been negligent and failed taking of her. Yes, she'd just given him great sex in his classroom and his mind had been blown away by her actions. This did not give him a pass on remembering the ugly things that had been happening in the castle and that someone was after them. His feet had practically grown a mind of their own. He now found himself by the floo, stepping in and running as far away from her as possible. She needed reliable people by her side, not some sex-addled, brain dead, former Death Eater scum ruining her life. He landed at Spinners End in a furry. Tossing off his black coat, he headed to his office where he located a bottle of Ogdens finest. Not bothering with a glass, he lifted the bottle up feeling the strong liquor hit the back of his throat and burn it's way down. He was planning on getting smashed and forgetting about his sins, and the beauty that he had left behind to recover on her own at St. Mungos.

Harry and Ginny came back from a quick lunch to find Hermione alone and crying in her bed.
"Where's Snape?" Harry asked looking around the apparently empty room, save his distraught friend.
"It's Professor Snape Harry, I've told you that before, " she said between her sobs and trying to take deep breaths.
"Well, where then is Professor Snape and why are you here crying? Did he say something to you he shouldn't?" Harry's infamous temper was showing itself as he questioned her.
"No, that's the problem." Hermione managed to squeak out before she started a full-blown cry.
Ginny rushed to her side pulling her into her arms. The hugs and shushing that only women know how to do seemed to pacify their friend. Harry stood at the side shaking his head while Hermione calmed down enough to talk.
"I tried convincing Severus that he had nothing to do with what happened to me. But all he did was blame himself saying he should have taken better care of me, and then he left." Hermione gave a big sigh. "I think he feels responsible for all of this. It wasn't his fault Harry. You know this. Someone is after all of us. I just happened to be the one by myself and vulnerable."
"Maybe the old git really is falling in love with you." Harry said without thinking.
Hermione swatted his arm, "Harry! Don't call Severus a git." Ginny giggled and put her hand over her mouth.
"Please go find him Harry. I need you to bring him back here so we can talk." Hermione folded her arms in front of her. "I can't believe he ran off knowing I couldn't chase after him right now." Ginny stood next to her smoothing down her hair.
"Harry, I'll stay here with Hermione. That means it's your job to bring back our wayward professor." Ginny smiled sweetly to her boyfriend who rolled his eyes right back at her.
"I don't stand a chance when you two gang up on me, do I?" Harry asked half-heartedly.
Ginny walked over to give Harry a big hug and a kiss. "You're my hero once again." Hermione couldn't help but laugh at the whole conversation.
Harry looked over to Hermione; "You are going to owe me for this. Who knows what kind of state I'm going to find the man in."
Hermione batted her eyelashes at her friend, "I love you Harry." She said in a singsong voice.
"Me too!" screamed Ginny, as Harry waved at them and hurried out of the hospital room. The girls laughter could be heard way down the hall.

In the dark room sat a very disgruntled young man. Ron Weasley couldn't believe everything that he had seen and heard. How had his world turned so upside down? Ever since the war had ended, his life hadn't been the same. It had almost been better during the war when he and his friends had all been very close. Now it seemed that there was a huge brick wall between them. Ron tipped the bottle of Fire whiskey up and chugged another mouthful, with some spilling down the side of his face. His arm reached up to wipe it off. The burn of the Fire whiskey was nothing compared to the burn of finding out that his friends and family were keeping deep, dark secrets from him. They were basically saying that they couldn't trust him. Once again he was not good enough for any of them. He never could measure up to the Boy Who Lived Continually, the Brightest Witch Ever to Walk the Planet, and the favored and spoiled only Weasley female child.
Drinking the last swallow from the bottle, he held it in his hand tightly. "Fuck them all!" The bottle launched out of his hand and collided against the wall. He was going to figure out what was going on and then he'd deal with all of them.

Harry's search first took him to Hogwarts where he soon found that the Professor wasn't there. Harry groaned knowing where he probably was, and he flooed to Spinners End. After the war, Harry and Hermione had been given clearance to floo there to help the Potions Professor to mend. Though he knew his visit wouldn't be welcomed, he started up the stairs to the man's office.
Harry opened up the door that was sitting ajar and was hit with the strong smell of alcohol. He took a breath and straightened his shoulders before heading into the room. There laid out on the floor was Severus Snape, still gripping the bottle of Ogdens in his hand.
Without saying a word Harry walked over to the drunk man and sat down in a chair.
"Get out Potter!" The order made Harry jump in his seat.
"No. I'm not leaving without you." Harry saw that the man hadn't opened his eyes and was shocked he'd guessed that it was him.
"Then I predict you'll be waiting a long time, won't you?"
"I'm not leaving until you come back with me to the hospital." Harry stated his demand. He knew he wanted to spend the night with Ginny and not this disgruntled, intoxicated mess of a man.
"I'm not going back there, ever."
"You need to go talk to her Snape," Harry's words almost coming out in an impatient tone.
Severus opened his eyes looking up at Harry, "The last thing she needs is to have the man responsible for her accident by her side. You know as well as I do that I'm no good for her Potter." The last words were spoken in a whisper.
"You know your words aren't true professor. You did not cause this to happen to her." Harry still wasn't sure why Snape was taking full blame for Hermione's current state.
Snape gave a cold laugh, "If you only knew what your friend was doing to me earlier in the potions classroom, you wouldn't be saying that."
Eww. Harry's stomach gave a lurch. He really didn't want to know what Hermione and Snape had been doing in the dungeons. It was hard enough to accept the fact that they were involved, besides imagining what sexual exploits the two had been up to.
"If she had left with the rest of you after class, she wouldn't have been alone walking to the Great Hall after giving me the best…um…" Snape's unoccupied arm flopped over his eyes. Harry again felt sick to his stomach thinking about what Hermione had given the man. "Oh fuck! She gave me the best blow job of my life."
"Oh God! I didn't need to see that picture in my mind." Harry gushed, rubbing his hands over his eyes.
Snape sat up and started laughing and laughing. "What's wrong Potter? Don't think your bookish friend has it in her to be a sexual being?"
"Sir, she's like a sister to me so I try not to think of her and sex in the same breath." Snape gave his signature eyebrow raise and then sneered at him.
"Hermione is beautiful and sexy Potter. It's about time that you dunderheads realize that she's grown up into a attractive and still highly intelligent woman."
"Do you love her Snape?" Harry tried to steer the topic of conversation away from sex. He met the man's eyes and saw the truth hidden there without hearing the words. "Because if you do, then you need to carry your arse back to St Mungos and talk to the woman that you love."
Harry stood and walked over to Snape offering him a hand up. To his surprise the older man gripped his hand and Harry helped him up. Walking over to a cabinet, Snape opened it to pull out a bottle, which he opened and chugged down. The obvious hang-over potion worked quickly, as the once inebriated man smoothed down his robes and turned to Harry.
"Well, are you going to stand there all night? I have a witch awaiting me back at St Mungos." Putting his nose in the air, the potions professor left his office, leaving a bemused Harry Potter standing there shaking his head. He ran his fingers through his hair and gave a huge sigh.
"Are you coming Potter?" Snape bellowed from downstairs.
Harry left the room with a snicker, and bounded down the stairs, fully amazed that he had convinced the man so quickly to head back to Hermione.
