I'm so glad all of you are enjoying this story!
Here's the next chapter.
Hermione had wandered through various doors and finally stumbled into a part of the house that seemed to be the dungeons. Only problem being, she couldn't find her way back out!
The scarce light her wand provided allowed her to see that both the walls and floor were made of dark, smooth stone. The silence around her was eerie and she felt as if her magic was draining away.
She had recently attended an interview for the Ministry job and was waiting to hear back from them. She couldn't help thinking that, if the Ministry needed an interrogation room, this would be perfect.
Her stomach grumbled, causing her to look down at her watch and gasp when she realised how late it was.
Lucius would be having a panic attack. She sat down on the ground with a sigh. If she hadn't found the exit in the last hour of searching, the chances of her finding it now were slim. She would wait and hope Lucius thought to look here.
Lucius had asked the elves to search for Hermione but they couldn't locate her. This was strange because their bond with her meant that they could detect her presence anywhere within the Malfoy estate.
"Would she have gone out?" he muttered to himself as he opened yet another door into an empty room. He didn't think she would have. She had never left without telling him which, of course, led him to speculate on the most outrageous dangers she might be facing.
"Hermione?" he reached the old wooden door that led to the underground dungeons. It was a place he had avoided since the war. He had cleared it out the day Hermione and her friends had escaped, thanks to his old house elf. He couldn't help shuddering at the memory of Bellatrix torturing Hermione. Dobby, the only elf he ever owned that showed no respect for him, had saved her. He had never been more glad to see him! Lucius had felt so helpless then, fighting an internal battle.
A part of him wanted nothing more than to protect her and destroy those that caused her pain but another part asked him to bid his time. Exposing his feelings for Hermione in that situation would have been disastrous for them all, especially since Hermione didn't even know how he felt. It had been the most agonising experience of his life, even worse than when Voldemort used the Cruciatus curse on him after he had failed his mission and been released from prison.
He shook the event out of his mind, concentrating on feeling Hermione's magic. The bond allowed him to do this but he knew, in the dungeons, he wouldn't be able to locate her aura. The dungeons had been covered with various cloaking spells to prevent the use of magic inside. Everytime he had entered the place, he felt the dampening spell work on his magic, making it weaker than normal.
Lucius opened the door now and saw it was not locked as it had been for the last two decades. "Hermione?" he called, the dark covering him as he moved towards the dim light on the dungeon floor. Hermione heard his voice and turned towards it. Her wand light had been getting dimmer and she felt weak, as if she possessed no magic at all…or maybe it was because she hadn't eaten any lunch.
"Lucius", she called back and felt the wave of protection that announced his presence, envelope her. She could feel his panic and fear as he swiftly moved towards her.
She remained sitting, not certain if her legs would hold her weight. As his arms wrapped around her chilled body, she buried her head in his chest, tears covering her face. "What is it? What's wrong pet?" Lucius' voice was tense with worry as he held her against him, wanting to absorb the feel of her.
She shook her head and murmured, "I don't know. I couldn't find the way out…I…I don't know why I'm crying", she felt Lucius press a kiss to her forehead as he gently stroked her back, offering her comfort and support.
"We should get out of here", he murmured to her once she had calmed down. Hermione nodded feverently, wanting to be as far away from the place as possible. Her legs were still weak so she didn't protest when Lucius scooped her up against him and carried her out, muttering a charm to lock the door behind them.
"I feel so weak", she whispered to him as he took her into the bedroom and lay her down on the bed, climbing in beside her and wrapping his arms around her shivering body.
"You should eat something", he murmured to her, pressing his lips against her softly to silence her as she made to protest. "You're tired and hungry. You need food".
He called for an elf and gave it the order to bring lunch to the bedroom, looking back at her once it had popped away. She was beginning to warm up, he noticed. Her hands were wrapped around one of his own and her head was resting against his shoulder. She seemed deep in thought, a frown on her face.
"You weren't affected by the dungeons", she stated, looking at him as if daring him to correct her. He valued his life so he simply nodded. She gave him a look of exasperation before saying, "Well? Why not?"
He couldn't help chuckling and nuzzling her neck as she demanded the answers. No one ever demanded anything from him…save his father of course but that had been when he was still a young boy. Hermione just raised her eyebrows as he gave her a fond smile and a gentle kiss, his arm pulling her closer to his body.
"The dungeons have a large amount of spells put on them to prevent the use of magic…it's from the time when we kept prisoners. Your magic gradually fades as you wait inside but it gets restored once you leave the dungeons". Hermione nodded, making him smile as she stared at him with rapt attention.
"You were in there for nearly two hours. It may take a bit longer for your magic to recover. You will be fine in a few hours but until then, complete bed rest for you". He chuckled as she frowned at him but she couldn't argue the logic behind his decision.
She settled on grudgingly saying, "That's a really long time", causing him to give her another soft kiss.
"I think you'll live", he countered with a smirk, just as the elf appeared with lunch.
