Hermione flopped down in the floor in aggravation. Harry had spent the better part of an hour gesturing wildly and yelling, though she couldn’t tell what he was saying. For some reason, Snape could talk through the invisible field but Harry couldn’t. It made her wonder what his intentions were.
“He looks sort of like a wind up monkey,” Draco said from his chair by the bluebell flame.
“How do you know what that is?”
“I might not mingle with the muggles, but I do know some things.”
“But a wind up monkey?”
Draco sighed. “I found one…on a raid. Snape was with me. They were torturing kids. He told me to focus on the toy, not to think about it. It was hard but I managed.”
“And the kids?”
Draco stared off into the flame. “They looked dead when we left. But that night, Snape snatched me out of my bed and we went back. Their parents were dead but they were okay, a little beat up, but alive. We put them in an underground home with the Order. I always wondered what happened to them.”
“I’m sure they’re okay.”
“I sincerely doubt that. I can’t imagine losing my parents.”
“I can,” she whispered and went back to trying to figure out what Harry was trying to tell her.
Draco snapped the book he was reading shut and stalked across the room. He towered over her, confusion on his face. “What do you mean Hermione?”
She ducked her head. “I…I lost my parents. I mean, well, they aren’t dead. I couldn’t imagine how horrible it would be if they were but…they are gone.”
Draco crouched down in front of her, trying to get her to look him in the eye. “You mean they are lost?”
“No,” she said, tears welling in her eyes. “I…I had Snape obliviate them. They have no clue they ever had a daughter or that magic even exists. They packed up and moved to Australia.”
“Can’t you find them?”
“That’s just it. I know exactly where they are.”
“So bring them back and have the obliviate reversed.”
“Can’t,” Hermione whispered, tears spilling over her cheeks. “Snape left a way to reverse it but Death Eaters got there first. They…they didn’t kill them. They went poking about in their heads. When they discovered their memories had been wiped, they cast a sealing charm on them rather than kill them.”
Draco closed his eyes in understanding and pain. “They can’t be reversed now.”
“No,” she said, sobbing softly.
“Does Potter know?”
“No. No one does. They knew I went to find them, but only Snape knows they can’t be fixed.”
“And me,” Draco said.
He was torn. Should he comfort her in front of Potter and risk having it get back to his parents or should he be cold and unfeeling? Well, the latter was certainly out of the question. He could no more stop feeling than he could stop breathing. Before he could budge, the room made the decision for him. The door slammed shut, nearly blowing out the bluebell flame in its wake.
“What happened?” she asked forlornly.
“I wanted privacy,” Draco whispered and picked her up off the floor.
He placed her on the bed, lying down beside her and pulling her into his chest. She sobbed for a very long time, soaking his shirt and a large spot in the bedclothes. He made no move to stop her, simply stroking her back and hair as she wept. Crying was cathartic. He had broken down once too. Trying to stop it was counterproductive. Instead, he remained silent. She didn’t need useless platitudes; she needed to deal with the pain, work through it so she could start to heal.
Hermione wept for all the things she’d lost: her childhood, innocence, friends and classmates, her parents, and hundreds of small things that other children and teenagers got to do that she didn’t. She had grown up too fast and had no desire to act less mature. Her outlook on life had been severely jaded. While other girls her age were going to parties and dating dozens of boys, she was preparing for battle and had managed to experience Ron as a lover before the war. She shuddered with the mere thought of trying to be a normal teenager again.
She didn’t care how she looked in that moment, weak or not. She couldn’t express how thankful she was that it was Draco there with her instead of Harry or Ron. He instinctively knew to stay silent. She didn’t need or want reassurances that everything would be okay…because it wouldn’t. It wouldn’t ever be the same again and all she could do was accept it and move on. When she’d cried out everything she had, she pulled back, sheepishly drying Draco’s sopping shirt and the bedclothes and her face.
“Better?” he asked quietly.
She nodded and gave him a peck on the lips. “Thank you.”
He smiled sadly. “Anytime.”
“You must think I’m horribly weak.”
“No, I think you’re human. It’s perfectly normal to grieve for one’s family Hermione.”
“I wonder why the door shut.”
“I imagine it was to give us some privacy. I think Potter would react badly if he saw me carrying you to the bed while you were crying.”
“I was crying before that,” she said quietly.
“You started crying when I walked over. Imagine how that looked to Potter.”
“Ugh, I do NOT want to explain that. I just wish I understood what he was trying to say.”
“You could have written notes I suppose.”
Hermione threw her hands up in exasperation. “Why didn’t I think of that?”
Draco smirked. “Because I’m smarter.”
Hermione snorted and rolled her eyes. “You’re a smart arse for sure.”
Draco chuckled and dropped a kiss on her nose. It was so sweet, so spontaneous, she couldn’t help but giggle. She leaned forward, capturing his lips in a passionate kiss. He answered quickly, pushing her on her back and climbing on top of her. They continued to snog the life out of each other, not really caring to go any further at the moment. It was wonderful, lips and teeth and tongues and tenderness.
Draco pulled back after a while with a grin. “Now I’m definitely glad the door closed.”
Hermione chuckled and gave him a buss on lips. “I put you in charge of telling Harry why.”
“Easy,” Draco said with a smug grin. “Sorry Potter, your golden girl was feeling a sudden craving for trouser snake.”
“Uh, that’s horrible!”
“It is, isn’t it? Note to self, never say trouser snake again.”
“Fine advice,” Hermione said, pulling him down for another sensual kiss.
The kiss went further this time, ending with two naked teens writhing on the bed. They were lost in a world of their own for hours as they slaked their lust. Neither questioned it at the moment. It just felt right. They both needed it, to feel something, if only for a moment in time. They finally collapsed on the bed in exhaustion, staring into the darkness.
“Christmas is tomorrow,” Hermione said quietly.
“I hadn’t realized,” Draco said, his voice oddly flat. “We could ask the room for a tree I suppose.”
“Yes, that would be nice,” Hermione said with a sigh, snuggling into his arms and falling asleep.
“My first nice Christmas,” Draco whispered into the darkness after her breathing evened out.
