Chapter 18
Charlie looked up when the kitchen door opened. As expected, it was Bill. This was a tad later than he normally came home, but he knew his brother was going to the Ministry after work, so it was expected. He was curious, though, as Bill said he would know whether he had the job at the Ministry or not.
He waited for Bill to grab something to drink and took in the pleased look on his face. The expression alone made him grin. “Did you get the job?” He asked, though was sure he already knew the answer.“I did,” Bill told him, starting to grin himself. “I start in two weeks. When I was done at the Ministry, I put my notice in at Gringotts. While I won't be putting in as many hours, I'm getting paid more, a lot more, so it more than makes up for the cut in hours.”“Great!” Charlie said, happy for his brother. For all the rotten going on, like the divorce and how his brother was discriminated against, this was something great to balance it out. “How many hours less are you putting in? Do you know yet?”“I'm only doing four days a week for now,” Bill started explaining, sipping his butterbeer. “And six hour days. It's more than balanced out by the jump in pay. Even with less hours I'll be making plenty more than at Gringotts. And it's only for now. They have someone about to retire. Once he does and they're satisfied with my work, I'll be picking up more hours. This is good either way. Even if I don't pick up the hours, I'll still be making plenty more.”“Even better,” Charlie agreed with a nod. With what he knew of his brother, he was sure they'd be plenty satisfied with his work. After all, the goblins were and they were far pickier than the Ministry. “It means you won't be as stressed about the money end as you were.”“Oh yes,” Bill admitted with a nod. “The money end is already settled with the divorce, so even this jump in income won't change what I have to pay out. It just means I won't feel as stretched when it comes to supporting Fleur and Victoire, something which will help. Once Fleur finds a job it'll ease up plenty then I can put more back for finding a house.”“True,” Charlie nodded. “Let's see what comes. Fleur has to find a job for it to happen though.”“She has a year,” Bill told him. With a shrug he explained, “That's how long her support runs, no more. After a year, she's on her own. We both thought it was fair. It gives her time to get herself back on her feet. I know Gringotts will take her back since they're the ones who trained her. She might have to take a bit of a refresher, but she'll manage. I've already told her that.”“As she's not the kind to want to gouge you, I'm sure she'll take it,” Charlie told him honestly. Though Fleur was hard to take and always had been, he knew she wasn't the sort to hang his brother out to dry over this. The choice of the divorce was a hard one, even on her, and she was already planning to go back to work when she managed to settle some areas. It was just going to take her some time to shift around with it.“She's already talking about setting up an interview if she can,” Bill told him honestly. “Though I don't think she'll try anything, it's set to where she can't renew her alimony after the year, so she knows she has to find something. She will, just give her time to get it together on her end.”After a nod, Charlie asked, knowing the divorce was a touchy topic with his brother and he wanted off it, “What day off will you have, do you know?” It wasn't that it mattered, he was just curious.“Fridays,” Bill told him, sipping more of his drink. “Which works out well for the club, honestly. Well, other than the weekends I have Victoire. I won't have to worry about being too tired when I go in.”“Another plus,” Charlie agreed, figuring Sirius would be happy with that development. With the two weeks before Bill started, it would align perfectly with the mentoring Harry was doing with them. If it played out just right, Bill would start having a much needed night off so they could work at the club without a problem on one of the nights they probably needed them the most.“This will work out well,” Bill admitted. Then he said, honestly, “I like going back into Cursebreaking. It's something I adored and only stopped because of Fleur. As this is the Ministry version, it will end up better. While it's still dangerous, it's not nearly as bad as what was in Egypt. Might have to take a bit of a refresher as I've not done it in a while, but I won't have a problem.” With a snort and grin, he added, “It'll be far more interesting than slugging through paperwork all the damned time. Not nearly as boring, that's for damned sure!”“I don't know how you did it,” Charlie laughed, shaking his head. “I would have gone mad.”“You do what you have to,” Bill shrugged. “Right,” he then said, “let me get changed then we'll head to the club. I'm hungry and they'll have food waiting for us. Beats us cooking, that's for damned sure!” He then stood with a groan to go change.“It does,” Charlie chuckled, downing the rest of his drink. While Kreacher was a damned good cook, he liked going out and being around people when they ate. He supposed it was the noise level as he was used to plenty from growing up. Either way, it worked out well.
After taking a seat at the table with Harry, Bill and Charlie looked around. It appeared like another normal night to them, calm with some action going on, but not much.
Like the night before, Harry sent off for their food then said, settling back, “Sirius will be around here and there, but he'll be mostly busy. Tonight is the time he does the major orders for out front and any equipment we need, so it takes time to slug through the paperwork.” Then, with a grin, he added, “And it makes him growly as he hates this kind of paperwork because he has to go through it very carefully, so expect some grumbling when he is around. Well, and some moaning.”“Can't say I blame him there as it would drive me nuts too,” Charlie chuckled, taking a sip of his drink.“Its mind numbing,” Bill agreed with a snort and shake of his head. Then with a grin, he added, “And I won't have to do it myself very shortly.” He then filled Harry in on what he meant.“This is great,” Harry grinned, nodding when Bill finished. “Just let Sirius know for this end so he can work around whatever. Fridays we do need plenty, so it'll be a boon for us.”“We figured,” Charlie told him, leaning back as their food appeared.“I'll make sure, then we can work around my visitation and whatever else,” Bill nodded.Harry then changed tracks and asked, looking between the two, “You both still planning on coming in Friday to see what it's like?” When they assured him they were, he sighed and said, “You should be aware this Friday is the one night a month we have an oddball event going on.” Before they could ask, he explained, “One Friday a month we have one of the local tattoo places come in. They set up over here and do not only tattoos but piercings. It's a big business, for both of us, so we let them come in.” With a grin he added, “The tattoos don't bug me, most of them, but the piercing bit gives me the shivers, so I plan to stay at the bar the whole night.”“I'm gathering we're not talking getting their ears pierced here,” Bill said, dishing the food onto his plate, already suppressing a shudder at what it could mean.“Some do the ears, but mostly it's other bits,” Harry groaned, taking some food himself. “And those bits I don't do well with. It’s the same with tattoos on some sensitive areas. I tend to stay at the bar and make sure I don't watch. The guys from the other side make certain to keep watch on it because they know I can't and Sirius doesn't handle it well either. Let me know if it's something that bugs you when you see it. If there's bits you can't handle, tell me. We all have our limits on what we can deal with.”“I don't think I'd handle it well either, honestly,” Charlie told him with a shake of his head and a small shudder as he contemplated the pain involved in piercing or tattooing some very sensitive bits.“Not sure on my end,” Bill admitted with a shrug as he started to eat. “Let me see the first time and I'll let you know.”“With bits which press your limits, we can work around it,” Harry told them honestly, looking between the two. “I don't do the hitting part well. It's something I don't like. While I can tolerate mild bits and watching, when they get into the heavy duty stuff I have to turn away. This is just another. As you won't be working on the other side, we can easily work around whatever you can't take. Just let us know. We each have an area we don't handle well and accept it. It's easily worked around if we know what it is.”“The beating I saw the one night I was in wasn't something I can deal with,” Charlie admitted with a shake of his head. “I can tell you now I don't think I could watch that.”“I figured, as your reaction was similar to mine,” Harry chuckled, grinning at him. “It's easily worked around, no problem. Just say something. We won't force you to watch something you can't handle.”“We'll keep that in mind,” Bill told him honestly, pleased he not only had fair warning it was coming, but there were bits in place so they didn't have to observe something which could cause issues.“On the tattooing bit—is there a reason you mentioned it beyond the warning?” Bill then asked, curious.“Actually, yes,” Harry said with a nod after swallowing his mouthful of food. “Whenever we have them in, there is always at least one stupid fool we have to chuck out over it.” Then he explained, “It has to do with being sober. Standard rule is, unlike the myths, these guys won't work on anyone who's had a bit too much to drink. We put it in place as well to hold off problems. Well, there always ends up one who wants to argue the point and we have to step in. Most listen and wait, going to the shop when they are sober to get whatever, but there are always a few who don't. Then we have problems. As you two will be with me, if it comes up, I'll have you handle it if Sirius is busy and the others are as well. Most won't listen to me, despite the fact I'm co-owner, because I'm a slave. Both of you can bounce them out right quick and they won't argue.”“Easily done,” Charlie told him with a snort, grinning again.“Sirius also wants you two to take on another job for him as well,” Harry added, looking between the two. Then he added, chuckling, “And it's one he would trust only you two completely with.”“What job?” Bill asked, curious, though he didn't think it was anything horrific or complex.“Being my bodyguard,” Harry told him with a snort, shaking his head, grin growing. When he heard them chuckle, he explained, “He gets a mite upset when the stupid ones try with me. As the busy nights are the worst for it and he's occupied elsewhere, he thought you two would work fine for it.”“Easily done,” Charlie assured him with a snort of laughter. Then, sobering up, he asked, “Does it happen much?”“No, but the problem is growing worse,” Harry sighed and told him honestly. “The ones who try are usually drunk or have had some liquid courage and want to play with someone younger who is decent looking rather than the majority who come in. As you've seen, most are older. The young ones tend to be attached in some way. Since I'm always around and tend to be alone while Sirius handles whatever, they see it as a chance though it's always made clear to them I'm collared by the club owner. They just think they can either get away with it or blame me. Doesn't work, but they try. Sirius figured with you both around, we can hold off some of the problems for me. And some of the other subs or slaves once the regs get used to you.”“We'll handle it, no problem,” Bill nodded. “You'll introduce us to the ones we need to know then?”“I will,” Harry assured him. “Sirius is getting with a few to let them know we'll have you two help and to introduce you. Not a big deal, honestly. Some of them, when they are in, just sit with me and we shoot the shit. Their Masters can leave and do whatever that way, as we're together. The fools are less likely to give it a shot if there are a few of us together. It's also one of the bits I'll have to go over with you when it comes to the rules and what to look out for.”
“As long as we know, it's not a problem,” Bill told him honestly. “Not like we're going to give it a shot.” He then laughed, shaking his head.“Exactly and why Sirius wants you both doing it,” Harry told him with a nod. “You're safe and everyone will know it. It's something we'll pass around if there's a problem.”“Yeah, I don't see too many wanting to tangle with me and Bill over some of this,” Charlie snorted, shaking his head. He was well aware the two of them could cut a pretty intimidating presence when they wanted to.“Our thoughts on it,” Harry agreed with a nod. “We need that kind and you're perfect for it. During the week it isn't bad, other than times around the full moon, but weekends can be a bitch with it. Not to worry, we'll help as well. Just wanted it out there.”After a few more bites of his food, Harry picked up the list he had beside him and looked it over. There was a ton to cover with the two on this, so he wanted to make sure he had it all in before they began. Quickly finding the place he wanted to start, he nodded then said, “Right, let's start with the easiest first and go from there. This will give me an idea of what to cover with both of you so I don't go over what you might know and can press on.” When the two nodded and told him to go ahead, he asked, “How much do you know about the whole lifestyle? I know what was covered in the classes, of course, but want to know if you are aware of anything beyond that.”“We read a book about it I picked up,” Bill told him honestly. He left it there, though, not going into details beyond that.“With what we read and in the class, I think we have most of the basics down, though you might want to make sure,” Charlie added.“Good,” Harry said pleased. “I can press on then.” He then looked between the two and said, “If you're not averse to reading about it, we can get you some more books, ones we know are accurate. They aren't huge, but contain the basics for almost all of it. It would be a big help in covering some of this as there is a ton there.”“We'll take it on,” Bill told him, excited by this as it would give him more of the info he wanted. As it was coming from Harry and Sirius, he was sure it would be the right kind as well. This was good!“Before you go, I'll have Sirius grab the books from out front,” Harry told him, making a note of that on the paper he was working off of. “Right, let's press on. I'll give the basic rundown of the rules, the biggies anyway, then start explaining. Again, if you don't understand something, ask. I'll explain it. Some of these don't need any, but some will. You need to tell me if you don't know why or understand as I know what it all means and sometimes just assume everyone else does as well,” Harry snickered, grinning a bit. When he heard the two agree, he pressed on. The first few were fine as they were just basic and there wouldn't be an issue. After that it grew more complex and he would have to explain more. It was fine and he didn't have a problem doing so. He was just worried about getting it all in.
“This is interesting,” Bill said with a chuckle as he read through one of the books Sirius gave them. It was the basics, of course, but far more explanatory than the other one he had picked up.
“Why do I still think you reading those means nothing but trouble for me?” Charlie asked rhetorically, grinning, shoulders shaking as he did. “Don't get too many strange ideas, Bill!”“Nothing too strange,” Bill promised with a chuckle and shake of his head. “I do like the idea of tying you up and having my way with you. It sounds interesting.” Then he looked at his brother and waited to see what he said.“It could be fun, I admit it,” Charlie nodded, looking at him with a bit of a grin. “Just no marks like we’ve seen on Harry. I don't want to start explaining those if someone sees them.”“No marks, my word,” Bill assured him, going back to reading. As he did, he observed, “Harry knows quite a lot about this, more than I thought he would, as Sirius probably told him some, but you don't come across it by accident. All he mentions is a friend he had, nothing more. I still think it means he knew someone in that awful town he lived in.”“True,” Charlie agreed, leaning back with a soft groan, relaxing. “Not sure who though. Most of you lot took turns watching there to make sure he stayed safe. No one ever mentioned seeing him with anyone.” Then he added softly, “Makes me wonder if it was a bird or a bloke, though. He was with Ginny for that one school year, so he obviously likes birds. It's just as obvious he does the blokes now.”“Not something I thought of, but makes me wonder as well,” Bill admitted, sitting up with a groan, finger marking his place in the book. “Doesn't matter really,” he then added, “just a curiosity on our end. I mean, it's rather blindsiding with what we knew of him to realize he's into this with Sirius. As for Sirius—with him it doesn't surprise me. Not sure why, but it doesn't. Might be his personality with so much.”
“True, he does fit the whole bit,” Charlie nodded. “With Harry doing the mentoring, we can ask. I'm sure he won't take it badly. We just need to make sure he knows we won't say anything. He's probably uptight about the bit with Ginny and him being with her for a while.”“It was only that one year in school,” Bill told him. “I remember that. She was still after him when he ended it and they seemed like they would get back together, but it just didn't happen.” Then, with a shrug, he added, “Probably best it didn't, honestly. They would end up in the place I am if it went on, as I doubt Harry could give up the blokes. He seems far happier with Sirius. I'm sure he adored Ginny as we all saw the looks he would give her, but it might have been for the wrong reason or something he thought he wanted while lying to himself about the other part. We've all heard of that one with those we know who like the same sex.”“True,” Charlie agreed. “It's the past, nothing more. Not like Ginny wasn't known for having dated several. We just never heard of Harry doing so.”“Which might be fairly telling in and of itself,” Bill pointed out. “He had one crush, that was all, at least that we know of. And dated one person, once, before Ginny. With all Harry went through, it's doubtful he would have tried anything with one of the lads for all the hell it could have caused him.”“Again, true,” Charlie nodded. “Albus never knew, at least that we heard, when it comes to Harry doing something with someone else. He had you lot watching closely. No one ever mentioned him and someone else. I'm sure if Harry had been seeing someone it would have spread through the Order like Fiendfyre.”“I don't think Albus knew as much as he thought he did on plenty,” Bill told him quietly. Then with a shake of his head, he added, “Dad—yeah, he's royally irate with Albus. I overheard Minerva and Mum talking one day and they said Dad went and raised hell with Albus' painting after the whole mess was over. They didn't say what it was about, just that he had. We've both noticed the minute Albus is mentioned to Mum or Dad, they both go a tad red, look angry, then change the topic. Not sure what it was about, but I think it has to do with the bit with Harry dying.”“Yeah, Albus and that bit is a touchy topic there,” Charlie told him, brow furrowed as he thought it over. With a shrug, he added, “Doesn't matter anymore, honestly. It's all over and don. Just curious is all. While Harry's different now, he's still a good bloke. Talking to him at tea these last couple of days has been great. It's not the same as he used to be, but still good. He's just odd, nothing more.”“True,” Bill nodded. After marking his place in the book, he reached over then grabbed Charlie's wrist and pulled him onto the bed. With a grin, he said, “Let's try out a few things we've read about. It should be fun and keep us occupied until bedtime.”“It should, especially since I know you're getting deranged ideas,” Charlie grinned at him. However, he leaned closer and kissed his brother passionately. Yeah, he would go with this and see where it led. After all, it was plenty exciting.
