Chapter 18
Tom was pleased as he read through the various missives on his desk, owls which had arrived that morning and were waiting on him when he woke. Everything was going according to his wishes, and the brooms and Quidditch set had arrived. He would set the elves to work on setting it up this morning.
With a contented groan, he leaned back in his chair and sipped his tea. Yes, this was going well. There were many issues to work out with various areas, not the least of which were Black and Harry, but it was moving along in a way he liked. Now he had to work on some of the more tricky bits of legislation he wanted pushed through for the 'business' end while watching what was going on with Draco. Fudge was backing away from Lucius, but he wanted to make damned sure he would stay as far back as possible. With the man's personality and Lucius' propensity for tossing money around, it was a situation he needed to stay on top of.Fingers drumming on the edge of the desk, Tom's brow furrowed as his mind once more slid to Black and Harry. There was much to work out there, on plenty of levels. While it was running the way he wanted now, he figured it wouldn't last, especially after Black found out the secret he had been keeping. Once he did, the war would really begin and it was one he probably wouldn't win. Which meant he not only needed what the old goat knew, but to see if he could counteract the dominant role in some way. The dominant role part—he would look into it. There was also the matter of sealing the bond further to protect himself. At the thought of protecting himself, he honed in on the Horcrux in Harry's scar. While the initial thought was to pull it out and reabsorb it as it was not in a place he wanted it, he now wondered if it wasn't best to leave it right where it was. As long as there was a piece of himself in Harry's scar, whatever happened when it came to him dying it would give him a road to come back. And, well, honestly? It was a nice piece of insurance for him, for plenty of reasons. It might need to stay right where it was. While he would look for a way to ensure Harry stayed pain-free from it, he wasn't going to look into pulling it back. Let it stay. Black might not like the idea, but he did. As it was his, what he wanted trumped Black's wishes. He was about to check the time, then see if Black and Harry were awake yet to present them with the brooms, when his study door opened and Nagini slithered in. With a small smile on his face, he waited for her to come over so he could see what she wanted. Of course, he didn't expect anything horrid, but was curious. After slithering up and draping over Tom's shoulders, hissing in a contented way as he rubbed her head just how she liked, she told him, “I think you should allow me to eat Draco Malfoy.”With an amused snort, Tom asked, “And why do you want to consume that brat?” He figured whatever she had to say would amuse him to no end.“Not only has he made you mad, but Sirius and Harry are infuriated with him as well over this mess,” she grumbled. Then, softly, she added, making sure no details were given, “Harry—part of it is the reason he's so sad.” Then, huffing, she said, “You need to let me eat him, Tom! It would make all of you feel better.”Not overly concerned with what she said or curious, figuring the bit with Harry would sort itself in the fullness of time, he told her, smirking slightly, “In this world, there are some punishments far worse than death. There are even some which cause you, personally, no physical harm which hurt more than the worst torture out there. Draco Malfoy is about to learn how true it is. Trust me, he'll hurt worse when I'm done than if you ate him.”“He needs punished, Tom,” she told him with a determined voice, though giving him an affectionate squeeze.“You have my word that for the first time in his spoiled life, Draco will pay the full penalty for what he has done when it comes to the law. There will also be retribution on my end which will end up far worse for him,” Tom assured his familiar, continuing to pet her. Though her blood thirst on the matter did amuse him, honestly.“Good,” she told him, pleased. “I think you should let Sirius and Harry witness whatever you're planning,” she added, almost as an afterthought.“It's not wise to do so,” he told her, not having thought of the two being there when he made Draco pay for this debacle. “Not only am I certain they, especially Harry, wouldn't like to see what I plan on doing to the brat, but it would end up too risky for them being around. I don't want anyone knowing I have the two.”“There are other means,” she told him. “Sirius is a dog Animagus. Harry—you can do a spell or something so no one knows it's him. At least ask, Tom, to see what they say. All they know is what you tell them.”“Let me ponder it and ways to ensure no one knows it's them. Then I'll talk to them when the time draws close for Draco to pay,” he told her. While he would ask, he wanted a sure-fire way the two wouldn't be detected if they did accept. He also doubted they would as he didn't think the two would want to see the torture. When she agreed to the compromise, he began asking about Harry. He did notice he wasn't as tired as he had been, so he assumed the youngest of them was improving. As long as he could function and it grew back to where it had been, he would let Sirius handle whatever. He just wanted progress reports, nothing more.
“You do realize you can use the dining room all you like,” Tom told the two after taking a seat at the kitchen table and accepting a cup of tea from an elf. As normal, they were eating breakfast in the kitchen.
“We like it here more than the dining room,” Sirius shrugged, sipping his tea.Though Tom nodded, he couldn’t understand how anyone would like the plain kitchen over the immaculate and fancy dining room. As long as they were comfortable and not causing problems, he didn't care. Instead, he pulled out two packages then put them on the table before unshrinking them, looking smug. “Those are for you,” he told them, pushing the brooms over to the two.Sirius took his, nudging the grinning Harry and said thanks to Tom. Then he told Harry, “Oh, we're going to have fun with these. Now we're on equal footing, so we should have a good competition.”After telling Tom thanks, Harry chuckled and nodded, “We will.”“The elves are putting up the hoops and such for you, making certain you have plenty of room,” Tom told them, still looking smug. Those weren't Firebolts, but brooms called Platinum Daggers, only available to professional Quidditch players on the continent. Mostly, he didn't want anything to seem off by his elves buying brooms in the Alley. Most didn't know who his elves were, but some were aware, so he sent them to the continent to buy the supplies. And, well, the impulse was there to do something special for them. He still didn't understand the why behind it, but assumed it was the bond doing whatever. Either way, he went with it.As Sirius looked over the broom, eyes widening at the trademark stamp, he explained to Harry what they were and the standard of excellence of this brand. These were great and they'd have fun with them! When he finished, he propped his up by the table and dug back into his food then asked, “Anything we need to know about?” With the evil arse, he wasn't sure and even if there was he probably wouldn't tell them, but he wanted to ask. Any tidbit of information they picked up could only help them at some point.“Nothing earth-shattering, no,” Tom told him honestly. Smug look returning, he did add, “I expect your pardon papers today or tomorrow, at the latest.” Then Tom tossed the Prophet on the table, pointing to the headline screaming about Peter being in custody. “Fudge won't like this, at all.”“Nope,” Sirius grinned, reading the article to see if there was more in it than the one they saw the day before. “I bet plenty aren't happy.”“Probably not, the least of which will be Fudge,” Tom told him, smug look returning full force. What he didn't say aloud was if they upped the search for Harry, he would have to stay more wary than now. While he was sure they were hidden well, concern was warranted as the populace would be howling for the Ministry to do something. He'd manage, it would just take some vigilance, nothing more. And, maybe, something to distract everyone. Distraction was something he had an idea about and planned to plant a few hints where to direct everyone's attention.“Just so you know; when those pardon papers hit, we're having a feast of epic proportions,” Sirius told Tom, digging back into his brekky.“There is no quibble about it from me,” Tom told him honestly, sipping his drink. “Tell the elves what you want and they'll make something worthy of such a celebration. And when the paper hits, I'll bring it to you.”Tom quickly finished his drink then stood with a groan, going to tackle what he had to tend to. “If you need anything, send an elf,” he told the two then swept out.“Arse,” Sirius muttered without any heat. Then he grinned and nudged Harry, “This is great. New brooms to muck about with and me being cleared. While being stuck here isn't good, they help.”“They do,” Harry told him with a grin himself. “Especially the cleared part. I get he did it to help himself, but it still needed done. And I like you finally are. You deserve it after all you went through.”“No arguments from me there,” Sirius told him honestly, smiling as he did. Just the idea he was being cleared after so long was great, though he didn't like the reasons why behind it.“Right, eat fast, Harry,” he told his godson. “I want to get in the air. If we finish fast enough, we can watch the elves get everything in place and maybe have them add some modifications we'll have fun with. After all, a new broom means we have to test how it works!”Harry gave a vigorous nod and tucked in faster, eyes sliding to the new broom. He was already curious how it differed from the Firebolt and if it was better. He wanted to know, that's for sure.
“Since you're around Tom more than the rest of us, do you have any idea what he might be planning with this, Severus?” Albus asked after tossing the paper back on his desk. The headline about Peter was what he was referring to, of course. Severus might not know the history of Tom the way he did, but he could usually take some good guesses because he was around him so much and asked plenty, not to mention what he observed. “We know he's behind it and he didn't pull this out just to clear Sirius as a way of currying favor with him or Harry.”
Arms folded over his chest, Severus looked at the paper and thought it over. It was his first break of the morning, so they were having a private meeting. Already news of this bit was all over the castle, not to mention so much else, such as rumors about Draco. After a few moments, he said, “I'm going to take a flier and say it's to protect himself in some way. Though I'm not sure how, Black being cleared can only shield him in some way I think. The laws in this area aren't something I know. We are aware what they are when it applies to being Kissed if you're bonded. It would save him from the ultimate punishment if he's caught, but I'm sure it's something else.”“As am I,” Albus admitted, leaning back and twiddling his thumbs. “I think we need to figure it out, Severus. While you can't ask, if we put our heads together, we might be able to deduce what he's planning.”“I think we need to worry, Albus,” Severus told him honestly. “A lot. Potter and Black aren't likely to give up what they know willingly, but we don't know what that bond can do fully. From all we know, if one member of it is danger, the others would protect him. We know the danger the Dark Lord is in. If the bond deems he's in enough, Potter and Black are going to start talking. And I'm betting one of the matters is me and others have to do with the Order. If those come out, it'll be a crippling blow to us. The Ministry—as long as Fudge is in there and not someone who is going to take this mess seriously, the Dark Lord can push through whatever he likes. There is even a chance the Dark Lord has someone waiting in the wings to take the fool's place. We've seen legislation being pushed through and both know the Dark Lord is behind it.”“All true and valid points,” Albus sighed and gave a sad nod. “Which means we have huge problems, Severus. And very little to work around them. We'll keep going as we are now, but I think we need to ponder something unsavory.”“I can live with the two as a sacrifice to end this,” Severus told him honestly, leaning back and looking at Albus. While the old man didn't come out and say it, he was sure that's where he was leaning.“It's something we need to ponder and keep to ourselves,” Albus told him softly. “Though it would be a last resort. Maybe something along the lines of—well, putting a stop to what Tom is doing. Sirius can manage. He has to know what his power is in the bond to do so, though. If he can just take it back to a stalemate and do something like forcing them to move so Tom can't continue plans, we can stop plenty. If not stop, buy us time. There are other areas we need to look into and eliminate before Tom can truly die. Even if Harry and Sirius do, Tom can come back.”“And that is a truly chilling thought,” Severus admitted, looking at him, shivering at the implications. “What do you have in mind?”“We need to buy time and give Sirius all the ammo he can use,” Albus told him. “And the how is beyond me. You can't just pass the research to him, obviously. Whatever we send Tom will stay with him if it gives a hint at this. I think we need to find some way to contact Sirius and feed him everything we have so he can take it from there. Maybe the suggestion of stopping what he can and taking Tom off the playing field. It would give us what we need.”“The how is the issue,” Severus admitted sourly, though liking this idea. Giving them time to do whatever would help. Well, and figuring out what the old man knew then tending to it.“Indeed,” Albus admitted with a resigned sigh and nod. “Let me set everyone I can think of on the task of finding something. I'll even talk with Filius to see what he knows or if he can point us somewhere. This is will be our priority for the time being. As well as shoring up everything we can to protect ourselves.” Then, gently, he added, “Especially you, Severus. Your waltz a delicate dance anyway. The danger level has now risen and you need to stay alert. One hint that Tom may know anything about you being a spy and you're done. We need you for many areas. If it comes down to it, we can keep you safe.”“If I'm found out, nothing you will do can keep me protected, Albus,” Severus told him honestly. “The Dark Lord will stop at nothing to get to me. It's a chance I'll take, though. Never fear, I'll stay alert and watch for the signs. We need to find something, fast, though. Black can't help if he doesn't know the power he has.”“We'll find a way, don't worry,” Albus assured him. “Let me get with some contacts and go from there. You see what you can find as well. Any hints would be most helpful if you run across them. I'll contact Remus as well. He knows plenty. Maybe he has some idea from his time in school. We know the four had ways of getting in contact they invented.”For once, Severus took no issue with what the old man suggested and nodded. However, he focused on something else Albus said in passing and was curious. “What did you mean by the Dark Lord can come back? This has to factor in.”“We'll discuss it, just not now,” Albus sighed. Shaking his head, he added, “We need plenty of time, Severus, and to talk it over when there is no chance of us being overheard. We'll schedule time this week to do so. Once I fill you in, I'll need help from there.”“Understood,” Severus said, nodded, looking grave.“On the topic of Draco,” Albus told him, changing subjects as he didn't want to discuss any more along those lines yet. He then filled Severus in on what he was hearing. As this was bound to end up with plenty drawn in, he wanted Severus to understand what might be coming when it dealt with the trial.
Early that afternoon, Tom was doing something wholly strange for him; nothing. Well, it wasn't exactly nothing, more like he had his back to the desk and was watching Harry and Black flying. It wasn't a case of it was just to keep an eye on them or glancing in the direction they were, but ignoring all he had to do to watch.
As he observed them swooping around and performing stunts while they smacked the balls around, an ache formed in his chest. He wanted to join them. While he had learned how to fly a broom in school like everyone else, he tended to ignore it, pursuing other forms of entertainment and the search for knowledge. Now? Well, it wasn't so much he wanted to fly, but to join them. In fact, it was like a small ache pulling him in their direction. He longed to be in the air and muck around as the two laughed, enjoying themselves. And it was hard to stop himself from doing so.While sitting there, he resigned himself to the fact he would buy a broom so he could. It wasn't even an act he thought about too much, just deciding he needed to. There was the niggling about him being rusty, of course. Normally, he wouldn't attempt anything unless he knew he would be an expert. This time he would ignore it. While it would come back to him fast enough, being the best didn't matter this time. Just so he was with them.He was realistic enough to know this was the bond and the pull from it, but it didn't make the feeling go away. In fact, it was a hard enough pull that he was having a rough time staying where he was. Up until now it hadn't affected him much, so this wasn't a feeling he was accustomed to.Eyes following Harry as he performed some stunts before smacking the ball towards Sirius, Tom gave a soft sigh. He doubted either of the two, or anyone else for that matter, knew he had never really had people around him all the time or been in a relationship. He hadn't. In school he was focused on learning all he could about their world. Sure, there had been some sexual encounters, even after school there were a few if doing so could get him what he wanted, but there was never a drive for anything serious. In fact, he sneered at those who become love struck. He was too driven to accomplish what he wanted to allow anyone close. Now, though, he had two people in his life. It was strange and he didn't know how to deal with them as he had no foundations to build on.From his end, he wasn't sure how to go about anything. He wanted some closeness with the two, at least in a way, but didn't because he was Lord Voldemort and it just didn't happen. The part of him which did want the closeness also reminded him he wouldn't know where to start to grow close. This was quite true as Harry and Black would be wary of anything he tried, thinking there was an agenda. Well, honestly, there would be. He didn't do anything without one. Even in this case there would be part which would help him. After Harry scored a goal, something which made him smile just a little, Tom sighed. With a soft groan he stood and ignored his desk and all on it. Yes, he would go outside for a time. He wouldn't join them in the air, but he would sit and watch for a time.As he walked out, he was disturbed he was following the siren song, but not as much as he normally would. It was there and he could do nothing about it. Besides, he realized he could get plenty he wanted if he played nice with the two. Unlike the past, though, wheedling what he wanted came secondary to just being around them. Though uncomfortable with that particular nugget of knowledge, he wasn’t overly so. He would just go with it.
