Chapter 18
"Hey Padfoot, how are you feeling?" Remus asked from the doorway.
Sirius looked up from his bed. He grinned when he saw Remus there. "Come in, Moony."
Remus did, taking a seat in the chair next to the bed. "You look better than you did when they brought you in."
"I feel better," Sirius said. "Still sore but I'm healing well."
"Good, I'm glad," Remus said, looking at his friend. "When I received the news…"
"I know," Sirius said, reading his best friend's mind. "For a moment there, I thought it was all over. I thought that it was the end and that I would never see Hermione again."
Remus swallowed, wishing the lump in his throat would disappear. "But, well, things turned out well, didn't they?"
Sirius was quiet. He turned, looking out the window.
"What is it?" Remus asked. "What's wrong?" He sense d the sudden shift in Sirius' mood.
"Hermione's pregnant," Sirius whispered hoarsely.
Remus grinned. "Congratulations!" He frowned when he saw Sirius didn't share his sentiment. "You're not happy?"
"I am happy," Sirius countered. "I'm just worried, I suppose. I mean, I don't know if I can do this. I wasn't a father to Eridanus, so how can I be a father to our second baby?"
"You are a father to Eridanus," Remus countered. "You're a wonderful father to him."
"But I'm not. I wasn't there for his first steps. I wasn't there when he was born. I don't know what to do."
"That's not what makes someone a father, Sirius," Remus gently said. "The only thing holding you back is your fear. You're going to be a great father to your second child, just like you are for your first one. You love Hermione and Eridanus; I doubt this any of that will change."
"I just feel so lost," Sirius admitted. "What if something goes wrong? What if she has a miscarriage?" The thought had been plaguing him since he found out. There was so much that could go wrong during a pregnancy. What if something like that happened?
"Then you deal with the situation if it comes. That's how life is, Padfoot."
"Well, it sucks," Sirius said with a pout.
"What sucks?" Hermione asked from the doorway. Eridanus was standing next to her, holding her hand.
"Daddy!" Eridanus cried, running towards the bed.
"Hey, little man," Sirius said with a grin. "Remus, can you put him on the bed?"
Hermione came over. "I don't want him to hurt you." She frowned when they ignored her and placed Eridanus on the bed.
"Daddy hurt?" Eridanus said, moving to his father. He curled into Sirius' lap, who wrapped his arms around his son's small body.
"Well, what would suck?" Hermione asked again.
"Don't you worry about it," Sirius said. "We were just talking about work."
"Oh," Hermione said, looking at them both skeptically. "Remus, how is Tonks?" she asked. "And Teddy?"
"Teddy is doing just fine," Remus said proudly. "And Tonks is just fine. She's actually been meaning to get together with you."
"Oh, well, I Floo her later this week to set something up," Hermione said.
"Good, good," Remus said, standing. "Well, I'll leave you both to visit." He hugged Hermione, gave Eridanus a kiss, and gave Sirius a pat on the shoulder. "Take care all of you." He exited the room.
"Are you going to tell me what's bothering you?" Hermione asked.
"Nothing," Sirius replied. "I'm just a bit nervous about everything."
Hermione took a seat. "Why are you nervous? There's nothing to be nervous about Sirius."
He shrugged. "There's just a lot to go wrong."
Her eyes widened. Moving closer, she took his hand. "Sirius, I think we'll be all right. Please don't worry yourself over all the things that could go wrong. We'll be all right, okay? I promise everything will be all right."
"But you don't know that, Hermione," Sirius said, his grey eyes staring at her.
"No, I don't," she said softly. "But I do know that no matter what happens, I'll have you and Eridanus with me. I'll be okay."
He frowned. "Hermione-"
"Shh," she cut him off. "Why don't you enjoy this time with Eridanus before we both go home for the night? I brought a book if you'd like to read to him.
Sirius nodded. "That would be nice. Would you like that, Eridanus? Want Daddy to read to you?"
Eridanus nodded.
Hermione handed Sirius a book. She lay back in the chair, watching as Sirius read the book to Eridanus. Every time her little boy let out a laugh, a smile was brought to her face.
These two men were her world. What would she do without either of them? She knew she would certainly fall apart.
She closed her eyes, listening to Sirius' soothing voice.
Sirius stared at Hermione's sleeping form. She let out a soft snore, shifting in the chair.
"Look at that, Eri, Mummy fell asleep," he whispered. Eridanus said something incoherent, snuggling deeper into his father's side. It seemed he was falling asleep as well.
Sirius was torn. Hermione looked so peaceful at the moment and he wanted to let her sleep, but it was getting late now and he didn't want her to spend another night in that chair. She needed to sleep in a bed. Eridanus too.
"Hermione," he whispered. "Hermione, love."
She shifted in the chair.
"Hermione," he said a bit louder.
"Mmmm?" she asked sleepily.
"It's time to get up. I think you and Eridanus should head home," Sirius said loudly, still not sure if Hermione was actually awake or not.
She stirred, lifting her head. She looked around the room before her gaze landed on Sirius. She smiled softly at him. "Hi," she murmured.
Sirius smirked. "Hello to you, too."
"Did I sleep long?" she asked, stretching her arms above her head.
"No, not really. I only noticed when I finished reading to Eridanus." Sirius looked to the sleeping boy in his arms. He chuckled. "It seems my reading just put everyone to sleep."
Hermione laughed, standing up. "No, I think he's just tired. I'm sure my mother tired him out."
"Tell Amelia I said thank you," Sirius said, taking Hermione's hand.
She bit her lip. "I told Mum I was pregnant."
"And?" Sirius questioned, noticing the conflicted look on her face.
Hermione shrugged. "I don't think so was too happy. I mean, I don't know what she expected. I'm an adult, now, and you're an adult. We're getting married and we already have a beautiful son. More children were always in our future, weren't they?"
Sirius nodded. "Yes, Hermione. I want to have more children with you and I'm excited for this little one." His gaze flicked to her stomach. "I'm sorry you're Mum was disappointed."
"It doesn't matter," Hermione said cheerfully. "She'll come around, she always does."
Sirius puckered his lips and made a kissy noise. Hermione laughed before bending down to kiss him. The kiss was soft and tender, filled with the love shared between them.
Pulling away, Hermione blushed. "Well, I'm going to take us home. Do you think you'll be ready to go home tomorrow?"
Sirius nodded. "I think so. Everything has mostly healed, it's just my weakness is keeping me from moving. I should be better tomorrow."
"All right," Hermione said. She gently picked up Eridanus, careful not to wake him. "I love you, Sirius."
"And I love you, Hermione," he replied.
The two of them kissed once more before Hermione left with Eridanus. Sirius watched them go; letting out a sigh once they left.
It was going to be a long night.
