Chapter 18
"Ready, Hermione?" Percy called into the bedroom.
"Just a few more minutes!" came Hermione's reply.
The two of them had decided that they would go out for the evening. She was now five months along and things had been progressing quite well. The Weasley family was still avoiding them but Hermione and Percy didn't mind. They both had George and Angelina, as well as Harry and Ginny. Hermione was quite sure it was a matter of time before the rest of them came around.
Well, everyone except for Molly and Ron. Hermione wasn't sure if they'd ever be able to move past what had happened.
But she checked herself in the mirror, making sure she looked all right. The dress hugged around her bump, but fit quite well. She had finally broken down and gone to a maternity store for clothing. While she could still fit into some of her regular clothes, jeans and dresses didn't work anymore. So Angelina and her had gone and bought some new clothes.
The black dress was something Angelina had insisted on Hermione buying. She wouldn't say what for, but was persistent. The dress fell down to her calves, making sure that too much skin wasn't showing. The top was modest, but showcased her swollen breasts just right. The dress was beautiful, but what was more important was that it made Hermione feel beautiful.
Her self-esteem in the past two months had been lower than usual. Hermione suspected it was due to the added stress of her pregnancy but wasn't quite sure. Percy had insisted she was more than beautiful and that her negative thoughts were unnecessary, but she had trouble believing him.
Hermione smiled when Percy drifted into her mind. The two of them had been doing wonderfully in their relationship. She loved him very much and knew he returned her sentiments. They would spend the night tangled within each other's arms, holding each other close. While they hadn't engaged in sex yet, the two of them had found other ways to show each other just how much they cared. She turned red just thinking about it.
"Hermione, love, our reservation is soon. We need to hurry up," Percy called through the closed bedroom door.
Percy had surprised her with dinner reservations at Il Fiore, an Italian restaurant in Diagon Alley. Hermione had never been there but she knew it was a high class restaurant. She tried to dissuade Percy knowing it would cost a lot of money, but he was insistent.
"I'm ready," she called out, grabbing her cloak. She pulled it on, fastening it. Stepping into the living room, she saw Percy waiting for her.
"About time," he said with a grumble, turning to face her. His jaw dropped as he took in her beauty. "Hermione… Wow."
She blushed. "Do you like it?" She did a small twirl for him.
"Like it?" Percy gulped. "Hermione, you look beautiful." He quickly pulled her in for a hug and kissed her. "You are the most beautiful witch in the world." He kissed her once more.
"Thank you, Perce." Hermione smiled at him. Her insides fluttered at his words.
"How did I end up so lucky?" he asked, staring into her brown eyes. "You're a goddess, Hermione."
She blushed. "I love you."
"And I love you," he replied. "Now come on, let's Floo to George's and we'll go from there."
Hermione tightened her grip around Percy's waist. She pressed her face into his chest, inhaling his masculine scent.
"Okay," she murmured, although she hated the idea of letting him go.
Taking her head, Percy led her towards the Floo. "Be careful," he warned as she stepped inside the fireplace. The idea of anything happening to either of them frightened him.
"I'll be fine," Hermione assured him. "See you soon." Taking a pinch of Floo powder, she shouted, "George's flat!"
She stumbled out of the fireplace into a pair of arms. "Thanks, Angie," she said, smiling at her friend.
"No problem." Angelina returned the smile. "Percy had said you'd be Flooing over first. His worrying over you is cute."
Hermione sighed. "It's a bit annoying to be honest."
Angelina gave her a small smack on the arm. "Oh, stop. He just cares. You should be grateful that he does."
"I am grateful!" Hermione protested. "I just-"
The fireplace turned green and Percy came out. "Are you okay?" he immediately asked.
"Fine," she said, giving Angie a look that meant their conversation wasn't over. Turning to Percy, she flashed him a smile. "Let's go."
Hand in hand the two of them walked into the Alley and towards the restaurant. Walking inside, Hermione was immediately bombarded by the smell of garlic. She inhaled deeply. "I love garlic," she mumbled when Percy gave her a strange look.
He chuckled. "You're a strange one, Hermione."
"But you love it." She stuck her tongue out teasingly.
"Reservation for Weasley," Percy said to the waitress.
"Ah, Mr. Weasley, right this way." The waitress led the two of them to their table. "Your server will be along in a moment."
"Thank you," Hermione and Percy said at the same time.
Percy helped Hermione into her chair before taking his own. The two of them picked up their menus and perused them.
"Do you know what you want?" Percy asked after a moment. "I think I'm going to have the shrimp ravioli."
Hermione bit the inside of her cheek. "Um…" Truth was she couldn't make up her mind. Everything sounded so delicious. "I think I'm going to have broccoli alfredo."
Percy smiled at her. Reaching across the table, he took her hand into his. Their waitress came over and took both of their orders.
"So," Hermione began after a moment of silence.
"So?" Percy questioned, looking at her confusingly.
"Well, is there anything you want to say?" she asked, inwardly hoping Percy had taken her out for what she was thinking. When he looked at her blankly, she frowned. "Anything you want to do?" she suggested lightly.
Percy shook his head slowly. "No," he answered cautiously. "I just thought I'd take you out for dinner. We've been so busy with appointments and preparing for the baby that we really haven't had any time for us."
"Oh," Hermione replied, staring down at her hands. Don't be stupid, Hermione! Of course he's not proposing to you. She inwardly cringed for thinking such a thing.
"Are you okay?" Percy pressed, wondering why she was suddenly so down. "You're not disappointed, are you? I just thought that it would be-"
"No, Percy, it's fine," Hermione said, giving him a small smile. "I'm glad we actually went out tonight. I needed it."
He gave her hand a squeeze. "I needed it too. That's why I asked."
Their dinner arrived and the two of them ate in silence.
They held hands as they walked back to Weasley's Wizards Wheezes.
"Thank you for this, Percy. It was really sweet of you."
He glanced at her. "I just wanted to make you happy, Hermione. I feel that with the baby coming I don't really have time to give you as much as attention as I'd like too."
Hermione stopped walking. "Percy, you do make me happy." She wrapped her arms around him and pulled him close.
"But back there in the restaurant you didn't seem happy," he said with a frown.
She shook her head. "That was silly of me. The hormones were making me feel weird. I was happy, Percy. I am happy." She reached up and gave him a small kiss. "You make me very happy."
He bent down and buried his face into her curls. Holding her close to him, the two of them stood there like that in the middle of Diagon Alley for a few moments.
He didn't ever want to let her go. And neither did she.
