I get through the morning, but I’m starting to feel some anxiety. I’m not looking forward to dinner with my parents. Around noon Weasley comes into the shop.
“Hey, Malfoy, can we talk?”
“Yeah. How are you?”
“Good. You?”
“I’ve been better.”
“Yeah, heard about all that.”
“What?”
“Harry. He told me.”
“Told you what exactly?” I ask, slightly irritated.
“About your row with your parents. It’s why I’m here.”
“What?”
“Ok, hear me out ok? I’m inviting your parents to mum’s party.”
“I better hear a lot more than that. Keep talking Weasley.”
“I talked to my parents about it…”
“Merlin. Does the whole world know about this?” I interrupt.
“Shut up and listen. Anyway, I talked to my parents about it and they thought it might be a nice gesture to invite your parents to the party. Mum and dad already think of Harry as one of theirs anyway so naturally you are invited. Hermione’s parents are invited but they will be at some dentist thing this weekend so they can’t come. If Hermione’s parents were invited, why not yours?”
I have nothing to say to this. I just blink at him stupidly.
“Listen, I’m not saying that it’s going to be comfortable, what with the history between our dads, but Andromeda will be there won’t she? So it’s someone your mom can be comfortable with. I know you are having dinner with them tonight. Just give them this ok? It’s from mum directly.” he hands me a rolled up piece of parchment like Potter had given me.
“Does Potter tell you everything?”
“He’s my best mate, of course he does.”
“Did he tell you what we did in the shower the other night?”
“Damnit Malfoy!” He slaps his hands over his ears.
I grin at him. “Do you want to hear?” I ask as his face turns just a shade darker than his hair.
“NO! Ok, he doesn’t tell me everything. Thank Merlin. Just the important stuff. Agh. Just… Just invite your parents ok. Even if they say no, they’ll know they were thought of.”
“I’m sorry Weasley.”
“For what?”
“For everything I’ve ever done to you. For everything my father has done to your family. I’m sorry. I can’t even begin to imagine why your father would invite my father to his house. You’re family must be incredible and I’ve done nothing but say horrible things about them.”
“That was the past. You don’t say them now do you?”
“NO, of course not.”
“Then like I said, the past. Can’t make things better if we don’t grow and change. That’s what I always say.”
I look at him skeptically.
“Ok, Hermione says it.”
I smile and extend a hand, “Thank you. I’m not sure I can say it enough.”
“You staying clothed and not telling me about your time in the shower will be thanks enough.” he says as he shakes my hand. “But seriously, I’m really happy for you mate. You and Harry.” He claps me on the shoulder and turns to leave. “See you Saturday.” He calls over his shoulder as the door closes behind him.

I get to the Manor and take a deep breath. I told Potter I’d keep an open mind. I still don’t see this going well.
“Hello Mother, Father.” I say stiffly as I take my seat at the table.
“Hello Draco.” Mother says in a much kinder voice than I was expecting.
We sit in silence for a while, each looking at our place setting. I finally sigh and help myself to some onion soup and bread. I was asked to come here so we could talk but I won’t start it.
“How are you Draco?” Mother asks.
“Fine.” I slurp my soup and both of my parents flinch. I’m acting childish but I’m taking some kind of pleasure in it.
“How’s business?”
I put my spoon down and look at her. “Is there a real conversation hidden behind this polite, impersonal small talk?”
“Very well, let’s get down to it, shall we?” Father says addressing me for the first time.
“That would be nice.” I continue eating.
“Your mother told me she visited your shop yesterday and you were less than gracious.”
“If this is going to be a conversation on my failures as a son, can we hurry it along?”
Father’s nostrils flair. “You will listen to me Draco…”
“You will stop treating me like a child Father.” I interrupt. This is impossible.
“Stop it! Both of you! Draco you are ACTING like a child! Lucius you are acting like an arrogant, controlling arse!” she yells as her entire face turns red.
Father and I adopt similar expressions of complete shock. Mother never raises her voice and she’s never, that I’m aware of, spoken like that to Father. I’m both shocked and proud of her.
“You will both stop acting like this and talk, like adults, and finish this now.” she practically growls. “Lucius, tell him exactly how you feel, you have nothing to be ashamed of, other than your behavior.”
Father clears his throat and opens his mouth to speak but nothing comes out. He takes a deep breath and starts over. “Draco, I have thought a lot about what you said to me yesterday. I do accept you, I may not understand it, but I accept that you are attracted to men. It was never my intention to make you feel as if I don’t and I apologize for that.”
I don’t respond. He meets my eyes and continues. “While I accept that you are attracted to men and will date men, I was not prepared for you to tell me that you were dating Harry Potter. First of all, you spent your childhood hating him and I can't understand that change. He was everything we worked against. It felt like a personal attack that you would choose the one we fought against for so long.”
“I spent my childhood hating him because I was told I should. I never made that choice on my own. It was all I knew.”
He considers this for a moment and then nods. “I suppose that is true.”
“It IS true.” I shoot back.
He ignores me and continues. “When I asked you to tell me why him, I will admit I did not think you would have valid reasons. I was prepared to try to talk you out of it or present you with an ultimatum. As I said, I was not prepared for your true feelings and therefore was not able to continue the conversation. I can see knowthat how I left could be seen as…”
“Rude.”
“Draco.” Mother hisses at me.
“Yes. I came home straight away and told your mother how insolent you were. She pointed out that you only did what I asked. You answered my question and with force and valid facts. Then last night your mother informed me that she came to see you as well.”
“Father, I know what happened yesterday. I was there, I don’t need a summary.”
“Very well.” I can tell he’s irritated with my behavior and losing his patience.
“Your mother told me what she shared with you. When faced with the words I had no choice but to consider them. As much as it pains me to admit it, fear of being alone is something I’ve been thinking about. I feel, that while you two are doing well with reentering society, I will not be as well received. I may not have handled it in the most dignified of ways, but, there it is.”
“You can’t be received if you never try.” I say pulling the roll of parchment out of my pocket. “But if you care to try.” I toss the scroll across the table.
He pickes it up, “What’s this?”
“A way to reenter society.” I lean back in my chair and cross my arms.
He reads the scroll and hands it to mother who reads it out loud.
To: Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy,
We are having a family celebration for my birthday this Saturday at 2:00 in the afternoon. We would be most honored if you would attend. Please do not feel as if you need to bring anything, your attendance is all that is required.
Hope you are well,
Molly Weasley
“What is this?” Mother asks.“It’s an invitation to a birthday party, it is a peace offering, it is a helping hand back into society. I’ll be there as well as Andromeda. If the Weasley’s can welcome you to their home after everything our family has done to theirs then you may want to consider accepting. They carry a lot of weight in the wizarding community along with a lot of well earned respect.”
“What do you think Lucius?”
“I think it will be terribly uncomfortable. I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“Really? Passing up on this invitation because you have so many others to attend? You admit that you are afraid of being along and that reentering the wizarding world will be hard for you and you are going to ignore the first invitation you’ve received in eleven years? Think that’s wise do you?”
“Watch your tone Draco.” Father shoots me a warning glance. I’m pushing it, but I know that.
“What do you think Mother?”
“I think, that while I don’t like your attitude Draco, you make very good points. I think we should go Lucius. The Weasleys’s may be the only ones to extend a hand to us. It would be unwise to turn it away. We can go and if need be, leave early.”
“Very well.”
“May I make one suggestion Father? Leave the snide attitude at home. Do not make them sorry they invited you.”
He shoots me a dark look but doesn’t say anything.
"Take the floo. It’s the Burrow. I’m going with Potter. I’ll see you there. Thank you for dinner mother but I’m going to head home.”
-------------------------------------------------------------
I get back home and I still feel irritated. I jump and pull my wand as a light comes on in my living room.
Potter is sitting a chair, he’s lit his wand.
“You are going to get yourself hexed if you continue to sneak up on me like that.” I say as I put my wand back.
“I just wanted to know how dinner went. “
“It was delicious, thank you for asking.”
“You are a stupid git.” He laughs. “Are they coming?”
“I believe so. It didn’t go well though. I think I managed to make them angry, again.”
“Well, you’ve always been good at that, making people angry. I believe you perfected it on me from the ages of eleven to seventeen.” He gets up and comes to me.
“I too have talents, Mr. Potter.” I slide my arms around him and lean into him. He hugs me back. “Thank you.”
“For what?” He mumbles it my shoulder.
“For being here. I love you Harry. I know it. I think I knew it then, but I love you.”
He squeezes me harder. “I love you too.”
He stays the night, beside me in bed, holding me or being held by me.
