Chapter Eighteen
Order in the Court, Defense Time
Drizel sat back in her seat. She rifled through her notes and tapped her finger to her chin. She glanced up at the witness stand where Harry sat. She knew the waiting was killing him, but she also knew Lucius would have prepared him for this. The Defense lawyer pushed herself back from the table, stood and walked over to a point only a few feet from the Boy Who Lived.
She smiled. “Good morning, Harry.”“Good morning, Mrs. McCullen,” Harry replied in a polite tone.“How are you feeling today, Harry?” Drizel asked. Before Harry could answer, Lucius stood up from his seat.“Objection, Your Honor. Relevance?” Lucius demanded.Drizel resisted the urge to roll her eyes. She spoke to the judge, even though she turned her head to look over at Lucius.“Your Honor, I am simply asking Mr. Potter how he is. Nothing more,” Drizel stated.Judge Pesi leaned forward with her chin resting on her down-turned hands.“Be that as it may, Mrs. McCullen, move on to questions related to the case. You may answer the question, Mr. Potter,” Judge Pesi said.Harry nodded to the judge before turning back to the lawyer.“I’m a little tired, but I feel fine,” Harry said.Drizel nodded. She was impressed. Most people would have said fine and let that be it.“Harry, did you know that Headmaster Albus Dumbledore had named you his heir?” Drizel asked.“No,” Harry said.“Then it’s safe to assume that Miss Weasley was not aware of this fact, either?” Drizel commented.Harry shook his head. “No. She probably didn’t.”Drizel could hear Malfoy scratching away on his notes. No doubt he was working up ways to turn things if it got ugly.“Were you aware that you were named heir to the Black family through your godfather Sirius Black?” Drizel asked.“Yes.”“And when did you find out about this?” Drizel asked.“After the war. After Sirius’…funeral,” Harry answered. Her next question surprised him.“Did you share this knowledge with your former wife?”Harry had to stop to think about that. He couldn’t recall them ever having such a conversation.“No. Umm…the will reading was after the funeral. Ginny wasn’t at the funeral. She was in America trying out for a Quidditch team. I…I forgot to bring it up, I guess,” Harry replied.Lucius watched Harry very carefully. He had been reluctant to allow the wizard to attend court without his dog accompanying him. Harry had been confident that his magic levels were at a controllable level and he wouldn’t need his companion. The convincing argument to Lucius had been that he hadn’t wanted to give the Defense any more ammunition. He reached for his glass of water to take a small sip.Big mistake.“Harry, how often did you have sex with your wife?”Water went down the wrong lung and Lucius coughed lightly into his hand, his eyes watering. His eyes fell to Harry who appeared to be thinking the question over carefully.“I…I think maybe a couple of times a month. Less than that when it was close to us divorcing.”Lucius rarely was surprised by things his clients said or did, but this was truly surprising. A dying sex life could make any witch or wizard ill-tempered.“Hmm. And during that time, what was your main focus, if it wasn’t on your marriage?” Drizel questioned.Harry spoke of all his volunteer work. He helped rebuild the wizarding world by helping build homes for homeless, helping orphans reunite with their families, and other charity work. Lucius was grateful when Drizel moved on with her questioning. He was pleased the questions were simple and, in his opinion, not harmful to their prosecution. Soon Drizel asked Harry a question no one had been expecting.“I understand you have a new pet, Harry. A canine. For what purpose does he serve?” Drizel inquired.Harry hesitated. He looked at Lucius then Drizel and finally Ginny. The redhead had her arms crossed over her chest and her head lowered, but he could still detect a tiny smirk. Considering he wasn’t forced with Veritaserum, Harry could lie on the stand, but if Drizel suspected lying she could twist it in her own way. Harry visibly swallowed.“He’s…he’s helping me control my magic,” Harry stated.Harry nearly startled when he heard the judge make a hmm sound. Drizel’s next question wasn’t too shocking.“You’re quite possible the most powerful wizard of your age. Why would you need a canine to help you control your magic?” Drizel remarked, pushing him for an answer.“Because I hadn’t used my magic in two years and it leaves me exhausted when I expel large amounts,” Harry confessed.Ginny was openly looking up at him now with surprise splashed across her face. Clearly, her lawyer hadn’t told her about all this. Drizel nodded her head to the judge.“Your Honor, I have no further questions for this witness,” Drizel said.Judge Pesi nodded back to her. She turned her head towards Harry and told him he could step down. Harry stood up and returned to his place sitting beside Lucius. The blonde wizard touched his arm, leaning over to whisper to him that he was doing fine. Harry nodded.“Your Honor, I would like to call my next witness. Healer Alexia Copperbottom.”Harry’s hands tightened into fists on his lap from under the table. Escorted in by Mad-Eye Moody, Healer Copperbottom stepped up into the box and sat down. The old Auror nodded his head to Harry before going back outside to stand watch.“I would like to note that Healer Copperbottom is here under subpoena and thus any confidential information may be discussed,” Drizel told the judge.“Noted. You may begin questioning,” Judge Pesi commanded.Drizel walked closer to stand directly in front of the witness stand, partially blocking the Healer’s view of the prosecution’s table.“Healer Copperbottom, what is your current relationship with Harry Potter?”Healer Copperbottom sighed. “Healer and patient.”Drizel was extremely happy she had forced her client to take a Calming Draught before court. She already knew the answer to the next question. That had prompted her to force the matter so her client wouldn’t have an outburst.“For what reason did Mr. Potter become your client?”Harry saw part of a sympathetic look before he heard the words he knew were coming.“He was put under my care after his suicide attempt.”Over at the Defense table, Ginny sat straight up in her chair. Suicide? Harry had tried…what?! Her wide-eyed stare zipped back over to the other table where all she could see was the back of Malfoy’s head. He was speaking softly to Harry about something.Drizel feigned surprise at the Healer’s answer.“Suicide? The Savior? Surely you must be mistaken, Healer,” Drizel said.Healer Copperbottom shook her head.“No. I was assigned to his case until he was released.”“To your knowledge, has Mr. Potter ever been to see a Mind Healer?”Harry lowered his head even as he heard the soft no. He hid his grimace as the other lawyer questioned her medical history, asking if the Healer had knowledge of any Mind Healing.“No.”“Did you recommend that Mr. Potter see a Mind Healer?”“…Yes.”Harry was feeling horrible, despite Lucius’ quiet reassurances. So far, the Defense lawyer was ripping him to shreds. His sanity – or lack thereof – was on display for all to see. Thank the gods that this was a closed case. In his opinion, Drizel was doing a good defense of proving there was no conspiracy against more than one pureblood family since Ginny hadn’t been aware of his heir status. For now, Drizel seemed to be focusing on discrediting Harry. She was trying to give the judge reason to believe Harry wasn’t in his right mind and that perhaps Ginny did what she did to protect children.“Healer Copperbottom, what repercussions can happen to an average wizard who doesn’t use his magic for a period of two years?”The Healer winced.“It varies case by case. Usual symptoms include horrible migraines, stomachaches, small uncontrollable bouts of magic, fever and the chills.”Drizel glanced over her shoulder at Harry. She felt a twinge of guilt when all she saw was the top of his head. She turned her head back around as she asked her next question.“And for wizards as powerful as Mr. Potter?”“His symptoms could vary from extreme irritability, exhaustion, severe muscular pain…and large, uncontrollable bouts of magic.”Drizel hid her pain behind a smirk. Damn her partner for this.“How damaging could his uncontrollable bouts of magic be?” Drizel asked.Healer Copperbottom smiled sadly.“Catastrophic.”Someone please kill me, Harry said to himself.Mercifully, that seemed to be her last question. By the time the woman was finished, Harry felt like crawling into a small, deep hole. After Drizel finally sat down, the judge sat with her head down. She was looking over the notes of the day’s trial, silently making a few notes here and there. Finally, Judge Pesi picked her head up to look out at those present.“Court will resume in three days at 9:00A.M.,” Judge Pesi announced.“At which time, Your Honor,” Lucius said, standing. “We will be questioning Miss Weasley with the use of Veritaserum.”Judge Pesi nodded while making the notation.“Very well. Court dismissed.”Harry stood and waited for the judge to leave before making for the door with Lucius right beside him. He stepped out with his head down, but lifted it to say goodbye to Mad-Eye Moody and Shacklebolt.FLASH! Harry was grateful for the strong Malfoy hand holding his arm as his vision filled with spots.“Mr. Potter, over here!”“Mr. Potter, what are your charges against Ginerva Weasley?”“Mr. Potter, will you be giving an interview?”Harry blinked hard. Suddenly, all the cameras exploded and parchments burned. The press as a whole moved back, giving Harry the space he so desperately wanted. Harry had had enough with these vultures. He had just endured a rough day in court and he just wanted to go home and take a much needed nap. Harry gave them all a long stare before finally speaking.“I will not now…not ever…grant an interview to any of you vultures. My name’s been run through mud too many times to count. You can thank the Daily Prophet and their star “reporter” for that.”None of the press had to question who Harry was talking about. They all leveled their heated looks at the meek stand-in for Rita Skeeter. The poor little wizard quivered in his place. Harry felt Lucius squeeze his arm.“Clear the way or the next spell will come from me,” Lucius warned. The reporters and photographers parted like the red sea. Harry allowed Lucius to lead him away to the nearest floo. He heard the press crowding around Ginny and McCullen, shouting all sorts of questions to them./……/
He paused in midair with his drink. He slowly set it back down while staring at Neville in surprise.
“You…you’ve seen Harry?” he asked.Neville nodded.“Yea, Seamus. I saw him a few days ago,” Neville answered. When he and Harry had been talking out on the grounds, Harry had assured him he was okay with Neville talking about things with others. He trusted that he would speak to people that Harry would trust. Neville had felt really good about that.“How’s he doing? What’s he been up to?” Seamus asked.“He’s been better, but he’s doing okay right now. He’s taking Ginny to court. I think he might have been there today,” Neville said.Seamus suddenly sprung forward in his seat, causing Neville to jerk backwards in surprise.“What are the charges?” Seamus demanded.Neville rattled them off as best as he could remember. He was surprised by Seamus’ behavior, especially when his classmate appeared really nervous. Seamus fidgeted in his chair for a few seconds before jerking to his feet.“I need to make a floo call,” he murmured before flying out of the room.Neville sat back in his chair confused. Seamus visited him once in a while in his quarters at Hogwarts when his business brought him back home. He sat there at the kitchen table waiting for his friend to return. He didn’t have to wait long before Seamus reappeared. Neville stood up.“Shay…what’s wrong?” Neville asked.Seamus sucked in a big breath and let it out. He looked less nervous than before, but the nerves were still there.“Neville, I need you to come with me. I need you to talk with an old friend of ours,” Seamus confessed.Neville narrowed his gaze in confusion.“Who?”“Dean Thomas.”/……/
Harry had been surprised when Tippy woke him shortly after he fell asleep. She was careful not to wake Severus or Draco. It took him longer than he cared to admit to sneak out of bed without disturbing either wizard. She squeaked quietly to him about a floo call downstairs.
Harry decided to walk instead of apparate since he was tired and likely to splinch himself. He was a tad shocked to find Kasper waiting for him outside the bedroom door. However, he was grateful for the company. He trudged down the stairs, almost missing a few steps in his stumbling. Kasper caught him once or twice to prevent him from tumbling down the stairs. When he finally made it safely downstairs, Harry was surprised to see Neville’s face floating in the fireplace.“Neville? It’s late,” Harry said, rubbing at his face and yawning.Suddenly, Harry stood up straight with a shocked face.“Is it Luna? Is the baby coming early? Do I need to meet you at St. Mungo’s?” Harry asked.Neville shook his head.“No. Everything’s fine with Luna, Harry. I’m sorry for the late hour, but this couldn’t wait. Can we come through?” Neville asked.Harry frowned. We? Luna and Neville? Despite the late hour, Harry told him to come on through. Imagine his surprise when Neville came through followed by Dean Thomas.“Dean, it’s been a long time,” Harry said, greeting him with a hug.Dean patted him on the back, but quickly backed off with a sad smile. Harry could instantly tell something was off.“What’s wrong?” he asked.A cold feeling of dread settled in his stomach when his two former classmates shared a look. Dean grimaced.“I think you should sit down for this, Harry.”Harry had a feeling he wasn’t going to like this. And soon he found out he was right.End of Chapter EighteenOrder in the Court, Defense Time
