  • Chapter 20: The bushy haired sneak

When Hermione awoke from her short faint, she found that she was being held, quite tightly by none other than Professor Snape himself. She felt the rough fabric of his cloak scratching her cheek, and could briefly detect that herbal, musky scent embedded in his clothing and perhaps own skin. From where she was positioned -her head leaning against his chest with his arms lightly around her shoulders- she could also hear the faint drumming of his heart.

It was a small, almost unheard palpitation, but one that echoed within the caverns of her mind for a full moment, lulling her into the comfort of his embrace and quickening heartbeat.

    "Miss Granger?"

The voice was low, and while it was in quite a terse fashion, it held none of its usual acidity. Hermione could have sworn that she thought she heard the slightest tremor of panic. Still, her pride and emotions had suffered greatly tonight and no minimal amount of false hugging was going to stop the pit of anger that basked in her stomach.

Slowly she moved backward, cheeks flaming and her eyes downcast. She felt the reluctant movement of his hands slipping down her shoulders before swaying to his side. They were silent a moment or two, Snape staring at the young woman in front of him until her defiant eyes met his gaze.

"I'm fine." she bit off tensely, giving him a disapproving look. "And since you were quite clear in your instructions for this evening, am I to assume that I should retrieve the sample immediately?"

Snape was silent a moment, obviously cross at her -when wasn't he?- and refused to give her the satisfaction of knowing that she was getting to him. There was something in her eyes tonight that he didn't trust, something that made her exude such passionate confidence that it was almost startling.

"I think that would be prudent." came the silken reply as long arms came to cross in front of a broad chest. Hermione nodded, her dark eyes scanning his face once more, as if putting it to memory.

    "I'll leave then."

With that she prepared to turn, her heart beating madly and her pulse practically taking her over. This had been easier than-

    "Not so fast, Miss Granger."

Hermione let out a small sigh, wondering if somehow he'd used that blasted Occlumency on her, even though she had tried her hardest to keep him out. She surveyed the weathered face of Snape as he stared at her, trying to keep his features neutral.

"We shall leave for the dance together." Snape said gently, his voice still holding that of superior thought. "It would be fool hearty to have you roaming about the dance without protection."

Hermione stifled a smirk at the words, although she felt stupid for doing so, for her mind was suddenly acquiring that of the immature adolescents she constantly mocked. Instead she frowned, brandishing her wand.

    "I have my wand."

"That's hardly what I would deem as adequate protection."

"Then what do you propose?" Hermione shot back irritated, wanting to leave instantly realizing that her time here was precious. She had to think of a way to throw Snape off the trail...to let her alone for a few moments so that she could make her escape, so far this was easier said than done.

"We shall take out leave for the dance in a matter of moments, I shall wait for you outside the Great Hall and you shall quickly retrieve the sample of the potion in this." with that he pulled a small vial from inside his cloak and dropped it into her outstretched palm. "When you are complete you will leave -making sure that no one has seen you- and return to me. We shall leave with the sample and save Potter."

At the last name mentioned Snape's face turned into a miserly scowl. Hermione -in a fit of exasperation- ignored it, taking the vial and placing it in her pocket. She then looked to Snape's dark eyes, her own eyebrow raised.

"I don't see how all of this is possible." Hermione said lowly, her lips pursed in thought. "I mean, everyone will see me at the punch table and then in a matter of moments again with James. Odds are, I'm going to run into my past self no matter what."

She frowned; surprised that Snape hadn't given this further thought. Snape sighed deeply, pinching the bridge of his nose a moment in agitation. He opened his eyes slightly, dark orbs glaring out at her.

"Do you honestly believe I would send you in there that vulnerable, Miss Granger?"

Hermione said nothing, not liking the way he said vulnerable. She said nothing, mereookiooking at him in question as she stood before him. Snape looked down at her, finding that from this angle she was rather short and before he could stop himself, he idly wondered how tall Jane -that was her name wasn't it? - would grow to be.

This he immediately realized was just the sort of bollocks that had to end if he didn't want to go mad. Hermione was a student. He was her teacher. Her Professor. Someone that was trustworthy. An adult. A leader.

But he also realized she had seen him as anything but...and that she did want to spend the rest of her life with him in some sort of cosmic universe. He said nothing of this though; they had a mission that needed to commence.

But looking down to her defiant gaze, he suddenly realized they had much to talk about because...he wanted that future with her.

"My wand is less powerful here." Snape said lightly, his voice suddenly becoming thick. "It's good for a spell or two, but there is a possibility of a time limit."

    "How long?"

"A half hour at the most." Snape said darkly, his eyes clouding. "I'll simply cast an invisibility spell on the both of us before we go into the Great Hall."

"That sounds good." Hermione said softly, unsure of how to interpret that new look in his eyes. They were almost softer, almost forgiving although she had no idea why. She looked to the floor a moment, her eyes becoming watery.

Snape parted that mouth of his, a mouth Hermione found far too appealing to still consider it annoying and as his upper lip crawled a minuscule inch, there were sudden elated yelps from down the hall.

"They're headed for the dance!" Hermione gulped, acquiring a wild look in her eyes as she looked to the besot Professor. "We're going to be seen!"

Snape rolled his eyes dramatically, brandishing his wand once more in front of them. His arm stole out, grasping her by the upper arm and dragging her into him. Her stomach fluttered as he held her close, her eyes closing suddenly. She heard the murmered invisibility spell he was casting and knew what she had to do.

"We should hide in the lavatories!" she hissed, his figure growing blurry as the spell wore on. A blurry Snape raised an even blurrier eyebrow and taken aback at Hermione's suggestion merely drew a blank look as Hermione motioned towards the boys lavatory, near the foyer where they both stood.

    "Pardon?"

"Just in case." Hermione reasoned, inching closer to the lavatories side by side. "What if the spell wears off too soon and we're caught? We need somewhere to hide while the crowd passes!"

e ine in a bolt of uncertainty cocked an eyebrow at her and narrowed his glittering eyes. He gra her her by the shoulder a moment, lowering his face until they were at eye level. She could feel the shallow warmth of his breath on the tip of her nose, making her take a deep intake of worried breath.

"No tricks Granger." he muttered lowly, the sound of the students drawing nearer. "I expect you back here, in this exact spot, the moment you know the coast in clear. And believe me, I'll know if you try anything."

Hermione nodded her head fervently, wrenching herself from Snape's grasp.

    "I promise."

She ducked into the girl's lavatory, seeing that Snape was doing the same a few feet away at the boys’ lavatory. She was partially amazed that Snape had been taken in by her suggestion, and elated at the prospect of obtaining what she had desired for so long.

She leaned against the cool tile of the lavatory, hearing the herd of students milling about in the foyer and she smiled. Perfect

She ducked her head out the door, looking to see if Snape was doing the same. Thankfully he wasn't. She smiled serenely, feeling her heart pound as she headed out the lavatory door, no one noticing the sudden swinging it had acquired, not that it would have mattered. This was Hogwarts anyway.

Sprinting away from the crowd of students -barely any of which she recognized- she could help but let out a manic giggle of delight. She was always known for her resourcefulness, her coy craft, and her mind. And yet it was her heart that was guiding her along this strange yet exhilarating exploration. The plan was in action.

She was going to find Severus.

    * * *

Why is she doing this to me? Snape mused briefly to himself as he leaned against the sink of the boys lavatory, Am I to be punished for the rest of my life? Why must I want things I can't have?

Snape was bitter now. Withdrawn and bitter at the realization that some little teenage girl had him all out of sorts. How could loss of control come this swift from such an unlikely opponent? It was mind-boggling. He wanted her. This little comment, repeated time and time again in his mind against his will was beginning to drill something into him. Something that made his stomach go strangely, making it tighten on and off.

Then of course he'd feel wrong about the whole thing and try to think of something else. Time and time again he would mentally comment to himself that she was his student. A student and nothing more. And if he hadn't traveled into the future with the girl, perhaps he would have left it at that. But as luck would have it, he'd seen their life together and wanted it.

    How he wanted it.

Should I tell her? he idly wondered, his dark brows meeting a moment as his brow furrowed. Would she believe me? Would she...who knows what she saw in the future? What if she's appalled? Or...what if she's happy? Could I actually make her happy?

Snape broke from this reverie for he could now hear the last of the diminishing footsteps and ventured a peek outside the lavatory door. In the boy's lavatory he'd seen that the Invisibility spell was beginning to wear off, and while this disturbed him it also infuriated him. He felt so weak then, so vulnerable.

There were no students, the hall was deserted. Perfect.

He stole along in the shadow lest anyone stroll by and find some tall man dressed all in black, skulking about around the girl's lavatories. He drew to the lavatory door, giving it a light rap with a tight fist.

    No answer.

"Miss Granger." he hissed angrily, wondering why she was taking her sweet bloody time when she knew they were under such a time limit. His foot soundlessly tapped against the stone floor, every moment passing making him more and more enraged.

"Miss Granger, I assure you I am not amused." his voice was terse, but in it lay his panic. He was worried now, worried at what she had or hadn't done. What if the spell had done something to her? It was doubtful, but knowing his luck not completely unbelievable.

Finally he flung the girl's lavatory door open, striding into the pristine room and scowling deeply. He scanned the dark space a moment before ripping down the aisle, flinging doors open left and right until he reached the end of the row and let out a low growl.

    She was gone.

    * * *

"Third floor." Hermione muttered under her breath, certain that Snape wouldn't catch her here. Besides, if luck was on her side, Severus should be up around here getting things ready for this evening. A flutter went through her stomach then, knowing what her past self would be encountering tonight.

The third floor was rather desolate, and in Hermione's opinion far too quiet on a night like this. But she supposed most of the kids would be at the dance by now. It had been going on now for a good half an hour. She passed a case holding several antique broomsticks and nearly gasped in shock as she gave it a passing glance.

Evidently Snape hadn't been too accurate in his spell's longevity. Already gaps of her were beginning to show all over her body, making her seem almost leopard like. If her inner calculations were correct, she wasn't going to make it another five minutes.

    Bloody hell...

    Hermione rounded the corner, her heart in her throat as she turned the pivotal corner. Her breathing quickened as voices around the very corner became louder, jovial and careless. It was in those joyous acclimations Hermione heard her own;

    "Thanks, I like your...glasses."

Hermione held in a gasp of surprise, even though in the back of her mind she knew she had internally been sure not to run into her past self. So strange was this time travel business...so very strange. It she she and James, obviously making their way to the dance. Bugger bugger bugger...

    Why were they running late?

Suddenly it came back to Hermione in a snapping flash. She remembered James coming late to her dormitory to pick her up, explaining that something had been holding him up. But what could it have been? No matter, they were on their way down tall all this instant and past Hermione was surely not going to take this well.

She brandished her wand in a hurry, suddenly raising it above her head and chanting the usual invisibility spell. Her wand shook a second before sputtering out a pathetic amount of green zippering flashes before completely dying out.

"Oh for the love of-" Hermione muttered angrily, the sweat on her brow and neck becoming cold and clammy with fright. Figures that no matter how she traveled into the past her wand was bound to be worthless. She didn't have much time to analyze the problem of her piddly wand, for now she could hear the gentle titter of uneasy voices scant feet away around the corner. She could hear every footstep taken, every pebble that was carelessly brushed with a wayward shoe.

Oh God... Hermione thought desperately, trying not to panic as the voices and footsteps drew nearer. They're heading this way...oh bollocks. Taking a wild glance around her, Hermione ducked into a nearby room and shut the door quietly behind her just as her past self and James rounded the corner uncomfortable.

"Safe." Hermione barely breathed to herself, casually leaning her forehead against the cold door of the classroom and letting out a gust of a sigh. The panic of the moment was over...they hadn't caught her. She listened as the moments passed and voices continued down the hall, taking their sweet time she noted.

    Oh bloody well hurry up...

She stopped just before she had the urge to tap her foot impatiently. Her heart was still pounding, knowing that now she had to find Severus to make this whole event worth anything. Right now as she stood there in the dim classroom, Professor Snape was surely stalking back and forth and fuming that she'd ditched him.

    That or he'd left.

This brought a new wash of panic over Hermione as she stood in the dank classroom, now wrinkling her nose at an offending odor somewhere in the classroom. She sniffled a bit, trying to ignore the stench, surely a potion gone wrong.

What if Snape had left her?

This was a possibility. He was an irritable Professor after all. What if this was to teach her a lesson, but he couldn't get back? What if she was to be stuck here forever? What would becof hof her then? Why, she didn't even exist for some years now! With this realization came the knowledge that what she was doing was stupid. That seeing Severus for whatever reason she had before was completely idiotic and selfish. If Snape didn't want her, shagging his younger self probably wasn't going to change much.

I'll be stuck here forever....and well...would that be so bad? Well yes and no...I'd be with Severus...and well, he loves me I know it. But that would probably screw up the rest of history for Snape and Harry...I can't do that. Oh God...please Professor Snape...don't have left without me. I'll never do anything stupid like this again, I swear I-

Hermione was halfway through that solemn oath when a sudden growl sounded from behind her.

Author's notes: I know I know, don't even say it. I'm evil. I am evil evil evil...I can hear you now; "Why aren't they together yet? What's going to happen? Where is Snape? Who is that with Hermione?" and yes yes yes, I will answer all of this and more in my next update, which will arrive when inspiration hits, for now I have written myself into a corner. *cheeky grin* but don't I always?
