Executing the plan.
Weeks passed before Thea had her first brew of the potion complete. She was pretty sure that it's effect would be near instantaneous, but that it could be treated in a time span of what she hoped would be 15 minutes maximum. After that time there would be little help for the victim. The problem was that Thea had to work at her usual level of excellence without actually killing the person she was planning to infect.
A week previously Thea had chosen a giggly, inane Hufflepuff called Misty as her test subject. The girl was forever getting in people's way, and was notorious for her clumsiness, giving Thea a good chance of making the ingestion of the poison look both natural and/or incidental.
The night before Thea was to execute her plan she received a letter from Lucius.
'It has come to my attention that you once socialised with those beneath us, those we wish to eradicate. Considering that your plan is to be carried out in the next couple of days, I suggest you choose a suitable subject; one that proves your total rejection of all those impure in blood and power. Perhaps one who is too lofty for her position? Miss Granger would be excellent. And one less Gryffindor can only be for the best.
Do not disappoint me.
L.'
Thea incinerated the letter with a tap of her wand before walking to the window. Staring out into the darkness she felt a lump rise in her throat. Hermione, she was going to hurt Hermione. Thea closed her eyes against the thought, trying valiantly to pull that blanket of ice around her.
Have faith, she thought fervently. Have faith in your own abilities. You've planned this carefully, you know it can work. Thea should her head. The variables were too great to risk a friend's life.
Listen to yourself! She practically screamed internally, balling her hands into fists. Friends? You have no friends now. Deal with it and focus on what needs to be done.
Squaring her shoulders and turning away from the black window, Thea unlocked her hidden compartment, took out her notes and began fine-tuning her plan.
The next day in potions Thea sat once more in her old place, directly between house Slytherin and house Gryffindor. She worked carefully through the lesson, seeming only to focus on her brewing, but she was in fact keeping a careful eye on Hermione and her movements.
When Hermione had to turn to pick up a new ingredient, Thea stood up and walked towards the front cabinet, passing Hermione's cauldron as she did so. The bustle and concentration of the class was such that none even noticed Thea, and she took the opportunity to tap her wand against Hermione's cauldron, turning the contents into a neutral base which she then added the poison to.
Thea had known, like all the students, that today would be the day they brewed Panticide potion which was infamous for it's deep red colour. Therefore Thea's own potion was the exact same colour, consistency and scent. All was going as planned.
When Snape called for them all to remove their cauldrons from the heat, Thea suppressed a near hysteric desire to shout for them all to run. She closed her eyes briefly, and when they opened they were icy cold and completely unreadable.
As always Hermione offered to test her's first, and as always Snape ignored her, forcing her to wait to be asked. Each minute stretched on for an eternity, and it took all of Thea's control not to show any outward signs of anxiety.
When Hermione was finally given permission to test her potion, Thea fixed her actions with an indifferent stare even as her stomach churned. Life seemed to move in slow motion as Hermione brought the ladle to her lips, and Thea prayed fervently that her dosage had been calculated accurately.
At first nothing seemed to happen, then a flush travelled from Hermione's neck up to the roots of her hair. Her mouth opened in a wide gape, hands fluttering at her throat. She turned wide, panicked eyes to her right catching Thea's eyes. That one look seemed like an accusation to Thea, though she knew it to be a plea of help. Something felt like it was cracking in her chest as she watched Hermione's eyes roll far back into her head before she fell to the floor.
A huge commotion started as people ran to help. Others were exclaiming hysterically that Hermione never made a mistake, that this wasn't happening. Snape was crouched over the deathly still Hermione, and in that instant Thea really believed that she had killed her. It was only when she saw the heave of the girl's chest that she knew she was still alive. But not for very long. unless someone acts quickly.
Snape stood up, his face cold, his eyes like chips of brimstone in his face, and still some stupid Gryffindors were babbling that this 'just isn't happening! It can't! That's Hermione! She's never wrong!'
Thea stood up and roared at the insipid girls;
'Well she is now! Look at her you idiots! Now shut the hell up before I shut you up myself!'
The room fell into a deathly silence, and Thea glared at the people around her, focussing her anger on them, blaming them for her duplicity.
Some poor Gryffindor caught her eye and Thea turned on her.
'Just what the hell are you looking at?'
The girl gaped like a drowning fish.
'Either get help or get lost. Go get Madame Pomfrey. NOW!'
The terrified girl ran from the room, and all the while Thea was ticking off the minutes in her head, hoping that Snape would act quickly.
She had purposefully made the potion so that a powerful healing potion could stop the fatality if administered in 15 minutes or under since consumption.
Seven minutes had already passed. Snape seemed to be examining Hermione, his face stony.
8 minutes, 9 minutes. It was all Thea could think about, a clock resounding in her head. Come on, come on, come on! She desperately wanted to grab Snape by his shoulders and shake him till he did what she wanted.
Finally he stood up and fetched a potion. Thea's eyes focussed on the label and when she saw what it was felt something ease in her chest. Thank Merlin!
But she knew that as this was the first test that the formula might not act as she had planned, and it was hard for Thea to stand back and watch as the healing potion was administered.
When Hermione didn't move for a further 3 minutes Thea bit back the urge to scream. All she could think about was how she had killed someone, how she had killed a friend. When she noticed the slight flicker of movement behind each of Hermione's eyelids, it took all her strength not to sag to the floor in relief.
By the time Madame Pomfrey arrived Hermione was moving her head slightly form side to side, but she could not seem to awaken to full consciousness. Thea watched as she was lifted from the room, hovering in the air as Pomfrey performed an elevating spell.
The room was silent as everyone watched Hermione leave. Snape turned to the class.
'I want those sitting nearest to Miss Granger to come with me to Professor Dumbledore's study this instant.
The rest of you will tidy away your equipment.'
Thea walked on surprisingly steady legs out of the door, accompanied by three members of Gryffindor and one other Slytherin. She was careful not to catch Snape's eyes as he held the door open for them.
