AUTHOR'S NOTE: This chapter was added at the same time as the previous one. Therefore, please be sure to read Chapter 18 first, or else you might get lost.
Also, I have an MSN group going, and I just have a few things to tweak. It should be ready to roll by next update. If anyone is interested in joining the group, please email me at cerri_kalidiah@hotmail.com. You must have a Hotmail account or NET Passport to join. Both are free, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem, I hope.
What will you find at the group? Well, you'll be able to find excerpts from the Book of Angelus (eventually the whole book, as it becomes relevant in the story) as well as some other books (even school texts!). I will also be doing character profiles that will be updated as the story progresses. I eventually hope to have some art (hint, hint out there!). There will also be message boards, including a Speculations board (so you guys can discuss all your interesting theories about the story -- I know you want to), a Quotable board (where you can post your favorite quotes from the story), and the Contest board. Yes, that's right. I said CONTEST. In a while, I will be having one, and the winning entries will be included in the story. That is ALL I am going to say about that right now.
So, as I said, if you're interested in joining, please drop me a line at the above address, and I'll send ya out an invite at the next story update.
And lastly, I need to remind everyone that next chapter will be an explicit one, so ... :)
HYPERION LOBBY -- PRESENT
"And we went back to my little flat, after getting some bourbon, and talked the night away," McGonagall finished.
Silence followed for a few moments, until Draco spoke. He leaned forward to see past Spike, and nearly glared at Angel. "I don't know whether I should be amused or horrified by the fact that you ... you ... cuddled my Transfigurations teacher!" Draco cried. "That is just ... wrong!"
"Mr. Malfoy ..." McGonagall began.
"It's like ... your parents having sex! It is not spoken of!"
Angel was not expecting this reaction, but he found it highly amusing nonetheless. He always did enjoy throwing people off their guard. So, he smirked as he addressed young wizard. "You don't seem to have any problems with me and Will," Angel said suggestively.
Draco actually managed to blush again. "Well, I ... um ... see, thing is ... ah, well ... but ..."
McGonagall suppressed a smile as she cocked an eyebrow. "Is that so?"
"Oh, it is very so, Kitty," Angel said. "He actually enjoys the thought."
"What?!" Draco screeched. "Angel! Shut up!"
"Well, I wouldn't rightly blame him," McGonagall said nonchalantly, as if Draco hadn't said a thing. "I mean, I would enjoy it, too!"
Draco turned to her, his eyes wide with horror. "Pro- ... Professor?"
Angel chuckled. "Oh, come now, Draco. Minerva may be your teacher, but she is still a warm, soft, loving woman." As he spoke, his voice softened, and he leaned over Spike's lap to get closer to the Slytherin. "Very warm, very soft, and very loving, if I remember correctly." He then sat straight again, and waited.
He wasn't sure what to expect, but he expected something. He was not disappointed as Draco's jaw grew slack, his eyes widened even more, and he nearly toppled over. Finally, he was able to gather himself together enough to speak. "Pro-professor, I regret to inform you that I will no longer be able to take Transfigurations, for fear of the inevitable visuals of you and my Sire en flagrante."
Angel was warmed by the fact that Draco considered him a Sire, even though they had yet to do anything to make it official. He certainly planned to, preferably before the school term began. Unfortunately, there always seemed to be something that needed his urgent and immediate attention happening. Tonight, he thought. I don't care what happens. Tonight, I'll make him mine as well as Will's.
His musings were cut short as Spike chose that moment to burst out with laughter, nearly falling to the floor. It was rather contagious, and everyone (save for Draco) joined in.
"I'm traumatized here!" Draco wailed. "How can you laugh at my pain?!"
Angel calmed himself enough to console the boy. "Draco, it's okay. Minerva and I did flirt a lot back then, even shared a kiss or fifteen, but it never went any further than that. She and I became very good friends, that's it."
Draco didn't seem to believe him. "You sure?"
Angel nodded. "Yes, I'm sure. She let me stay with her, as I had no place of my own at that time, and we became very close."
"So, how did you become Blood-Bound?" Draco asked, obviously unsure if he really wanted to know.
"One night, I came home from work to find him cut up and bleeding rather profusely, all over my couch ..." McGonagall began.
"I really am sorry about that."
The professor just huffed and rolled her eyes. "Do you ever stop apologizing for things you have no control over?"
Angel paused. "No?" he answered, uncertain. In truth, even he didn't know why he constantly apologized for nearly everything, whether it was his fault or not. He suspected it had something to do with when he first regained his soul, but that was an exceptionally long time ago. He should have gotten over it by now.
She smiled slightly at him. "I never blamed you, and was never upset. If I recall, I was a little to busy keeping you in one piece." She then turned to the rest of the group. "Apparently, he got into an ... argument with one of the local gangs. They didn't take it too well. He had been both shot and slashed, several times. I knew I couldn't take him to a Muggle hospital, as all they would do was pronounce him dead on the spot. As for the local Wizarding hospital, well, they wouldn't let him in, as he's considered a 'dark creature', regardless of his soul.
"I knew he wouldn't die, but I also knew that if I didn't do something, he wouldn't heal nearly as quickly, nor as well. So, I gathered some rags, and old fashioned sewing kit, what bandages I could, and my wand. I never was very good at healing charms, but I used what I could, and used mundane methods where I had to.
"Now, a day or two previous, I had received a pretty nasty gash, myself, on my arm. Of course, that was due to my own carelessness in the kitchen. In any case, it was still open, and even though I had it covered with a bandage, Angel's blood seeped through and went directly into my bloodstream. The bandage became so soaked, that it couldn't adhere to my skin anymore, and it fell off. In my haste to help Angel, the healing wound opened again, and I, in turn, bled all over him." She turned to Angel and smiled again.
"Thus, we were accidentally Blood-Bound," he concluded. He waited a few moments, giving everyone time to process what McGonagall had said, then continued. "Now, as it was only done once, and quite haphazardly at that, the Bond wasn't all that strong. We didn't even know it happened until later. Even so, after that event, a very strong loyalty to each other developed."
"And that's why you trust her?" Draco asked.
"Yes. I tend to trust the people who go out of their way for me like that."
Draco considered this a moment, then nodded. "Alright. I trust you, so if you trust her, then I do too."
"I am glad for that Mr. Malfoy," McGonagall said. "However, I do harbor some fear of what Albus might do. I am by no means any good at mental protection, and should he be inclined to poke around in my head, as he is wont to do ..."
"That could be a problem," Spike said.
"I can't believe I'm about to do this, but ..." Wesley said. "Angel, when you were discussing the laws of your Order and such, you mentioned that those Blood-Bound to your Order would receive some vampiric abilities."
"If at lower levels, yes," Angel agreed.
"Including the ability to block most telepathic invasion?"
Angel straightened, and his face brightened. "Yes!"
"Well, then, perhaps it's time you finished what you started, and Blood-Bond her properly."
Angel turned to his old friend. "Minerva?"
"I wouldn't have to drink blood all the time, would I?" she asked, cringing.
Angel chuckled. "No. The Bonding Ritual would need to be repeated regularly, most likely only once a year, just to ensure it stays strong. But other than that, you don't have to drink blood ... unless, of course, you want to." His voice had once again taken on a suggestive tone, and he winked at her.
From the other side of Spike, Draco whimpered. "Please, make it stop!"
It was agreed that McGonagall would benefit greatly from being Blood-Bound to Angel, and that the ritual would be done on the upcoming full moon. With that, she returned to Hogwarts with Spike at her side. He was to ask the castle to look after her, as well as Snape and Lupin. Then, he would find the other two professors, and make sure they knew the three of them had to be careful and look out for one another, even when the others were there.
Angel was now busy trying to calm Draco down. It was clear that the young wizard was under a lot more stress than he had been letting on. The whole revelation that Angel had been flirtatious with his teacher was enough to make him snap. So, Angel was sitting with him on the couch, his arm wrapped around the other's shoulders, holding him close. No one could hear what they were saying, as they were quietly murmuring to each other, but their body language clearly indicated that Draco's nerves were settling, but he was by no means calming down. It was painfully obvious what was going to happen when Spike got back ... if the two bothered to wait that long.
Dawn just rolled her eyes and snorted. She didn't care what they did ... okay, so she did. She had wondered about it, and pictured it, and found it better to save such musings for when she was alone in her room. Shaking her head, she headed up the stairs to said room, but not to think about the three sexy vampires. She had more important things to do.
When Glorificus was defeated and the portal that been opened by Dawn's blood was closed by Buffy's sacrifice, Dawn had been convinced that she was no longer the Key, but just a normal girl. However, after her sister's return from death, Dawn became more and more discounted. The only ones to ever pay her any mind were Tara, Spike and Xander, and Giles of course, when he was around. Both Anya, Xander's once-fiance, and Faith were hot and cold, but they never fully ignored Dawn. But Buffy, her own sister, seemed to abandon her, as did Willow.
It was then that the younger Summers girl became interested in interdimensional and transdimensional portals. She began to hope that she had retained some of her Key abilities. She studied in secret, not even telling Spike, who had become her greatest confidant. These studies led to researching magick, which she found she was pretty good at. So, combining scientific data collected about dimensional travel and some demonic magick, she developed some exercises she hoped would one day help her produce a portal. But, though she had been practicing for over a year, she still had yet to manage one.
This was the current reason for which she went to her room at the Hyperion Hotel. She knew that having someone who could create gateways that could quickly transport people and equipment across long distances without being noticed would be invaluable. She tried to convince herself that this was the reason she worked so hard on it. But, deep down she knew she was doing it primarily to prove to herself and everyone else that she was worth notice. That, though she wasn't super-powered like her sister, or a witch like Willow, she could do something important -- something neither of those two could do. They would have to think twice about threatening to turn her back into a green ball of transdimensional energy that they didn't even really know how to activate anyway.
So, once she got to her room, she took a quick shower and dressed in loose pajama pants and a tank top, then stood in the middle of her room. Beside her on the floor, she set down an old tennis ball with a smiley face on it that she had found while cleaning out her room. She then placed her feet a shoulder-width apart and shook her arms at her side. She started breathing deeply, closing her eyes and relaxing herself. She tuned herself into the energy within and without her, something she had become very adept at. When she felt she was centered, she placed her right hand on her left hip with her left arm bent behind her back.
She stayed that way for a few minutes, her eyes closed as she concentrated on raising the energy she needed. She pulled it in from the atmosphere around her, and it sparked her own energy to life. She could feel herself filling with the green light of her origin, and pushed some of it into her hands. Once she had a sufficient amount, she twisted more to her left, then slowly swung her arms out. She then twisted to her right, her arms following her body's movement. Finally, she ended with her left hand on her right hip and her right arm bent behind her. All the while, green sparkling light fell from her fingertips and drifted to the floor, where it created a glowing, unbroken circle.
She slowly opened her eyes to regard her work, and a satisfied smile swept across her face. So far, so fabulous, she thought. But she wasn't done yet. She again dropped her arms to her sides and focused for a moment, re-engaging the connection between herself and the ring at her feet. She then slowly brought her arms up, reaching above her. The ring followed until it floated above her outstretched hands. Alright, she thought, almost there.
Bringing her arms down, she reached before her. Again, the ring followed, swinging from a horizontal to a vertical position in front of her. This would serve as the frame for what she hoped would be a portal. This was as far as she had ever gotten, save for a few shimmers here and there. Just setting up the frame had once been trying for her, and usually wiped her out. This was what she figured was keeping her from actually forming the portal; she never had anything left. But now, after many months of practice, creating the frame was relatively simple. She had plenty of energy left for the actual portal.
With her arms still outstretched, she concentrated on the Hyperion's lobby. She pictured every detail she could, imagined how it smelled, how sound traveled through it, how it felt to have the room surround her. When she was sure the focus was as perfect as she could get it, she started to slowly stream her remaining energy through her fingertips and into the space within the ring. She never let her concentration slip, and held her desired destination firmly in her mind. She used every ounce of willpower she had, demanding the energy to create a portal.
Suddenly, a shimmer rippled across the empty space. She didn't allow herself to get excited though, as this had happened a few times before without resulting in anything. But another one appeared, and another. She began to tremble with exertion as the space within the ring began to waver and ripple, almost like water. Dawn fought to keep her focus as the Hyperion's lobby slowly appeared. After a few moments, the image stopped flickering and stabilized.
It was crystal clear, as if she was simply looking through a regular doorway. She could see Angel and Draco, still on the couch, even closer to each other than when she had left them ... good Lord, Draco was practically in Angel's lap! She forced herself to ignore it, as difficult as that was, and viewed the rest of the scene before her. Xander and Faith stood on opposite sides of the front counter, and Dawn could even hear them as they chatted. It was ... perfect.
Dawn gulped. This was it. This was what she had been working so hard for. This was what she was meant to do. Slowly, she bent to pick up the tennis ball with one hand while maintaining the energy flow with the other. She almost toppled over, but righted herself in time. She took a deep breath, held it, and tossed the ball toward the image of the lobby. She sighed as it sailed straight through the ring, and bounced it's way to Xander.
Success.
Unfortunately, she couldn't hang onto the energy any longer, having been completely drained. The image shook and disappeared, the frame following shortly. As she collapsed, she smiled and thought, Next time.
**********************************************************
Xander turned toward the strange sound to find a tennis ball bouncing right at him. He caught it deftly and turned it over in his hand. He recognized the smiley face instantly.
"What'cha got there?" Faith asked, coming around the counter.
"Dawn's tennis ball," he said absently.
"Where'd it come from?" Faith asked, looking around. "I don't see Dawn."
"That corner," Xander said, pointing to the corner just beyond the couch where Draco and Angel were now watching him. "Outta thin air." Something deep inside him, something he kept hidden from his friends, leapt into action, and before he knew it, he was halfway up the stairs to the second floor. He didn't bother to see if the others were following as he rushed to Dawn's room.
He charged right in without knocking and stopped dead as he saw the young girl lying on the floor, unconscious. He quickly scanned the room, looking for intruders or some sign of an attack, but he found none. Satisfied that they weren't in any danger, he rushed to the younger Summers' side and checked for a pulse. It was steady and strong, as was her breathing. He began checking her over for any bruises or blood or broken bones. Again, there were none. He therefore figured there would be no harm in lifting her and placing her in her bed.
Angel and the others ran in just as Xander was gently laying her down. "What happened?" Angel asked.
"She's out. No injuries, no sign of attack," Xander answered quickly. He was fully aware that he sounded more like a soldier on the field than the boy Angel had once known, and quite frankly, he preferred it that way. He was surprised and honored that Giles had even remembered his one-night stint as a soldier that Halloween, much less to acknowledge that he retained every bit of knowledge that soldier had possessed.
More than once that information had come to the rescue to aid Buffy. But, she never formally recognized it. To her, he was always the Zeppo. And he had grown quite tired of it. He had a chance to really do something here, something important. And most of all, to be recognized for it. For that, he was thankful, and was determined to show Angel and the others what a wise choice they made in allowing him to teach.
He was suddenly pulled out of his reverie by a soft moan. He smiled as Dawn's eyes fluttered open. "Huh?" she asked.
"Yeah, that's what we were wondering," he said gently, holding the tennis ball in her line of vision.
She smiled brightly. "You got it." Though weary, her voice was laced with excitement. "Oh, God, it worked!" She began to laugh lightly.
"What worked, Dawn?" Angel asked. It was clear that the vampire was more than a little concerned. Whether for Dawn's well-being or over the sudden appearance of the ball, Xander couldn't tell.
He could tell, however, that Dawn appeared to need a bit more rest. He also figured that whatever had happened, it was Very Important. "Maybe we should wait till we can get everyone together," he suggested. "That way, she only needs to go through it once. That, and she's clearly beat."
Angel looked at him intently, apparently trying to read him in some form or fashion. Where the younger man would have once flinched or turned away, he now steadily held the vampire's gaze. A slow smile slid over Angel's face and he said, "Good idea. I'll round up the troops." His grin widened, and Xander could have sworn he had winked. But, before he could think much on it, Angel turned to Dawn. "Half hour good for you?"
She nodded and grinned. "Yeah."
"Good." Angel then turned and left.
As planned, everyone gathered in the Hyperion Lobby a half-hour later. "Everyone" included McGonagall, Snape, and Lupin. Xander was only slightly surprised at this. The three professors seemed to have become a part of their ... family. And though they had only met Lupin recently, he fit in perfectly. It was one of those things you didn't question, you just went with it.
Of course, Xander felt a particular affinity toward the werewolf. It was partially due to the fact that he knew Oz. Though Xander and Oz had never seemed to be what you would call close, they had an understanding, a kinship. Without even being told, without even asking, Oz had recognized what lie deep inside Xander.
What seemed like eons ago to Xander, he and four other Sunnydale High students had been possessed by the spirits of a hyena pack. Even once exorcized, he retained not only the memories of what he did and said during that time, but the instincts as well. He had talked with the other victims, but it seemed he was the only one that remembered anything of it.
His most prominent instinct was that of The Pack. Buffy, Willow, and Giles became his Pack, with Buffy as the Alpha. Giles, though not the Alpha, was a respected Elder. Willow was another Pup, like Xander himself. When Oz entered the picture, Xander felt like he had found a Litter Mate, a Brother. He had been disappointed greatly when the werewolf left. It was at that time that Xander's Pack began falling apart. Once Oz was gone, it was never the same.
This was also why Xander felt drawn to Lupin. Being a werewolf, he would understand some of the thoughts and feelings that occasionally let themselves be known inside Xander. As everyone settled down, he began coming up with ways to talk to Lupin alone. He wanted to see if he could form a similar bond to the one he had with Oz. Now, more than ever, with his once best friends apparently having gone crazy, he needed it.
Lupin lowered himself into a chair across the coffee table to Xander, and glanced at him. Xander nodded in acknowledgement and smiled, careful not to show any teeth. Last thing he wanted was an experienced werewolf to perceive him as a threat. Lupin returned the gesture, then cocked his head to the side. He knows, Xander thought with a bit of excitement. He can sense it. To further confirm this, Lupin furrowed his brow in question. Xander pointed to his watch, then jerked a thumb over his shoulder, hoping that Lupin would understand what he was trying to convey. Lupin again smiled and nodded. They would talk later, whenever Dawn was done revealing what she had to reveal.
Which Dawn was starting to do at that moment. She first explained what she knew of her origin for those who didn't know. It was all old news to Xander, so he allowed himself to only half-listen, keeping one eye on Lupin. The werewolf seemed rapt with Dawn's story, apparently never having encountered anything like her. Xander allowed himself to really look at the professor, and realized with something of a start that he wasn't that old. He surmised that Lupin was roughly thirty-seven or so. The grey at his temples lent an appearance of greater age, as did the somewhat haunted honey-colored eyes. Xander wondered what the other man had seen that would cause such a thing. Was it anything like Xander, himself, had experienced?
He was once again interrupted in his musings by a change in the conversation. Dawn was no longer explaining what she was, but had gone on to describe her studies and attempts at making portals. Xander was a little miffed at himself for not realizing what she had been doing for the last few years. He had once told her that she was like him; they saw everything, even when others didn't. How she had gotten past his own watchful eyes was way beyond him. He also had to admit he was quite impressed that she had gotten past him.
Finally, she finished her pseudo-lecture by describing how she had finally made a portal, and had just enough energy to toss the ball through. Xander glanced around the room, and saw many surprised expressions. Fred, however, was more excited than surprised. It seemed she could hardly contain it.
"You know what might help?" she asked. "I've been working with portals for years, but not in the mystical way you have. Mathematical equations represented by letters and sounds. All that you need to make it work is the right letter-sound combination, and a paranormal hot spot."
"Wouldn't the gateway Dawn creates be considered a hot spot?" Lorne asked.
"Precisely what I was thinking!" Fred exclaimed, jumping up. She began pacing before the group, obviously caught up in the topic. "Now, if we can just figure out the correct combination for interdimensional travel, then all she would have to do is make the gate. Then, just recite the right sounds and POOF! Portal! It wouldn't take any additional energy."
"Can you help her with that?" Angel asked.
Fred scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Does e equal mc squared?"
Xander couldn't help but snicker. Fred reminded him so much of Willow, back before they had even met Buffy. He sobered quickly at that thought, and pushed it away as best he could. That part of his life was gone now, forever.
Angel was nodding and saying, "Good. Dawn, I want you two to work together and get something stable. There's a Floo on the sixth floor, so you two can travel back and forth and meet during the school year. Make up a schedule. And most importantly, this does not leave this lobby."
Xander pondered that for a moment, when something struck him. He stood up, drawing all attention to him. "Is it really true that Dumbledore can actually read minds?" he asked, looking to Snape and McGonagall.
The Transfigurations professor nodded. "And I hate to say that he has absolutely no qualms in doing so."
Xander nodded. "Okay. But when you're Blood Bound, it'll help block him out?" He now looked at Angel.
"Theoretically."
"Then, maybe we should Bind Severus and Remus as well. Since Dumbledore won't be allowed on our floor, we don't really have to worry about him mentally spying on us. But he has access to the other two ..."
"Very good point, Xander," Angel agreed. "It's of course up to each of you," he said, looking toward the professors. "Draco, do me a favor and make copies of the Order's laws, structure, the Oath, and the Bonding Ritual itself. I want you three to go over this before making any concrete decisions. Yes," he said, holding a hand up to halt McGonagall's protestations, "even you, Kitty (at which point both Snape and Lupin turned to her with raised brows as Snape mouthed, "Kitty?!"). I don't want there to be any surprises."
Draco ran off to Angel's office to do as instructed, while Dawn and Fred went off to begin their experiments. Draco didn't take much time, and after he had distributed the information from the Book of Angelus to the three professors, he, Spike, and Angel made their way to their suite. There was no doubt in anyone's mind what was going to happen once they got there. And for some reason, Xander couldn't bring himself to be appalled by it as he normally would. Hmph, he thought as he slowly approached the werewolf, I must be growing as a person.
Once he made his way to Lupin, he grinned. "I believe you wanted to ask me something."
TO MY REVIEWERS
LissaRiddle: Just so ya know, threats don't make the writing go any faster. :)
EscagirlUK: Fawkes, like the portraits, is bound to the Head of the school. He doesn't have much choice, poor thing. Don't worry, I won't keep him cooped up for too long. Harry's reaction to all this is going to be interesting, to say the least.
Vigilante: Draco's hypno-ability is going to end up being rather important. Besides, it's just so ... HIM. And I'm not a genius. I'm just your standard garden variety deviant.
Rob: I do have a bit of something planned for Connor. A something that might ... just ... spawn ... a third trilogy (I already have a second one planned). Harry ain't gettin' any for a while in this story, if at all. I am as of yet undecided. But I promise it'll be angsty, but not TOO angsty. I have plans for just about everyone who mutinied against Buffy and Willow (in fact, some of it was revealed/hinted at in this very chapter). There will be no Illyria in this story, though. I like her, I really do, but she just doesn't fit into the story. Cordy and Doyle will have specific jobs in the future, however the others I'm undecided on. As for what happens to Dumbledork (ahem), Voldie, and Buffy & Co., just sit back and watch. :)
Warconq: I got sick of vampire sex being all about power struggles and stuff. So, I decided to go more for bonding. I'm glad you're liking the Dru transition. I knew she had to "go", but I didn't want to lose her. Luckily, Draco was not adverse to the idea. ;) As for the keyboard, I got a new one. That offer was too sweet for words. The moment I read that review, I linked the review page to my beta and made her read it. It truly gave me the Warm Fuzzies. As for the site, as mentioned in the Author's Note above, I've decided to start a group for the time being, just to see how that works out. So, if you want to be invited, send an email to the addy above, and I'll send it out at the next story update. :)
TP: Ohhhh, shopping will be MUCH fun. Much, MUCH fun.
Kim: Of COURSE Angel gets around! He's been around for near 250 years! He's gotta kill the monotony somehow, right? :) And I'm sure Dumbledore will be tickled PINK to find out about it ... if I ever let him ... which I just might not. As for my evil laugh ... I kinda failed that in Eebbil Skool. ~sigh~
Loki: Gotta warn you Connor lovers, he's isn't going to show in THIS story. He will be showing up much later, in the third story of the trilogy. But, he will have a very important place in the "family". Harry, of course, will show up much sooner. :) And yes, there can be a sexier male than Vamp!Draco. Okay, it's actually IS Draco ... and a couple others ... but ... well ... DAMMIT SORA! DRAW ME THE PICTURE ALREADY! Ahem. You'll see. :) I'm also a big H/D shipper, but I must warn you, that won't be happening in THIS PARTICULAR STORY. However, there are two more stories after this one to complete the trilogy. There's still a possibility ...
Sakya, Shiela & Eanelen: Thanks guys! Your patience really is appreciated. With the busy holidays, it's been hard. And if it's not that, it's my beta throwing new conspiracies at me. I'm tellin' ya, the things this girl comes up with!!! :D
