DARKNESS
Ron found himself standing outside of Hermione’s room leaning against the door shaking and trying
desperately to not to cry. He hated Malfoy. Ever since he could remember there had been this
underlying feeling of hatred for the Slytherin.
Ron tried to think of a reason why he hated him and the first one he could come up with was the
time on the train in their first year when Malfoy had made fun of his family. Before that it was
hatred based on his father and brothers telling him that Lucius Malfoy was Death Eaters and studied
the Dark Arts. But that didn’t have anything to do with Draco Malfoy. If that was the case then Ron
hated Lucius not Draco.
And Harry had hated Draco as well because Ron had said that Malfoy was a Dark Wizard and of
course, with him just finding out that his parents had been killed by You-Know-Who, Harry would
automatically hate Malfoy. When was it that Harry had quit hating Malfoy? Ron couldn’t pin down
a time but he would bet that it had to do with what had happened in the Forbidden Forrest at the
beginning of last year.
Harry and Draco had gotten detention for fighting in Transfiguration and McGonagall had sent them
to Hagrid who took them into the Forrest. They’d had to collect the al’hall plant that Professor
Snape had needed for a healing potion that he was brewing for Madam Pomfrey. The al’hall plant
only bloomed at night and could only be found in one place in the entire world. The edge of the
waterfall in the Forbidden Forest.
Something had happened that night but to this day Harry refused to talk about it. Thinking back,
Ron knew that that was when Harry had backed off from the attacks and the pranks that the other
Gryffindors planned on the Slytherins. He had kept it up all year and the thing last week just
confirmed Ron’s idea that Harry had been waiting for just this opportunity to get everyone to back
off.
How did Harry live with all this Ron wondered? He had known for only a short period of time and
already he was going crazy. Harry had been dealing with this for six years. Right then the respect
and love he had for his best friend tripled. He would do everything in his power to make sure Harry
got what Harry wanted, even if it was Malfoy.
Ron shook his head in exasperation and pushing himself off the door he wandered down the stairs
and out of the common room. He didn’t see Hermione watch him carefully as he walked by so he
missed the concerned expression on her face. Which is a good thing considering his mood, the last
thing he need right now was her concern. He wandered down the corridor lost in his thoughts.

Hermione saw Ron walking down the stairs and quickly hid her wand beneath the book she had
been pretending to read. She was surprised when he walked right by her without noticing her. Her
surprise turned to concern when she saw the shell-shocked expression on his face.
Surely he wasn’t taking it THAT hard. After all, he had worked a lot of it out for himself. Not
withstanding the whole Voldemort getting Draco pregnant thing but really that wasn’t so bad, was
it? She wondered what else he was thinking?
She watched as he walked slowly out of the common room without saying a word to anyone. When
he was gone she gathered her stuff and headed up to her room to sit with Harry.

Darkness.
So black that no light was visible.
He didn’t believe in darkness. There was always light.
Always.
Where was the light?
He felt himself twisting and turning trying to find the light. Where was it?
He missed the light, he thought, starting to panic. He couldn’t survive without the light. He felt
himself falling or he thought he was falling. He wasn’t sure in all the darkness.
Where was his damn light?
Where was it?
His panic rose in his throat threatening to cut off his air supply. He heard it before he ever saw
anything. It was a light sound. Like a flute or a wind chime, something soft. It calmed him enough
for him to get control of his breathing. When he had calmed down he felt himself taking a deep
breath. When he released the breath the was a high twinkling sound and before him there was a
light.
He could tell that he was walking because he felt his body moving but the light got no closer. It
seemed like hours before he could tell that any distance had been covered. As he drew nearer he
could tell that it was a candle flame. He could see no candle but he was positive that it was a candle
flame.
This isn’t my light. Where is my light?
It is safe
“Who’s there?” He called out in fear.
I am, no one, someone, everyone, all
What is going on?
Everything, nothing, past, present, future, all
I have had enough. Tell me where is my light?
Here, there, nowhere
Will you stop with the bloody sayings and tell me what is going on! Where is my light?!
Laughter could be heard flowing with what he could now tell was a flute. As the laughter rose the
flame of the candle rose as well. As he watched he saw that his light was there in the flame and he
saw that indeed, his light was safe.
Thank you, he sighed in relief. He was safe.
What now? He asked glancing around the darkness that he was no longer afraid of.
Now we play my friend. Now we play.

Dumbledore woke from his nap refreshed and with the drain of his powers restored. He shook with
silent laughter. Finally, he would be able to finish the task he was on this earth to do. Finally, he
would be able to rest.

Ron had been wandering for hours when he found himself outside the closed doors of the infirmary.
He debated whether to go in or not. Pansy had not sent them word that Draco had regained
consciousness so he could only assume that he was still asleep.
Ron stood outside of the infirmary door contemplating going in. He had reached up a hand to push
the doors in when the swinging door swung open slamming into his hand pushing his wrist back at
an uncomfortable angle. Cursing he brought his injured wrist up to cradle it with his other hand
against his chest.
“I...I’m sorry. I didn’t know anyone was there.” Came the soft voice of the girl standing in front of
him holding the door open. She was staring at him with an unreadable expression on her face. The
only emotion seen was in her cloudy blue eyes.
Smiling faintly Ron shrugged, “It’s okay.”
The brown haired Slytherin raised an eyebrow at his obvious lie but said nothing about it.
“He’s asleep again.”
“Oh”
”Did you want something?” She asked hesitantly.
“I wanted to talk to Malfoy.” Ron said. He grimaced at the tone of his voice. God, had he always
sounded so...so weak? Why was he even here? It’s not like he would tell him anything, he had
promised Harry. So why did Ron even feel he needed to talk to Malfoy?
“Well, he is asleep but you can come in and wait until he wakes up if you want.” Pansy said turning
quickly away so that he didn’t see the flush that appeared on her cheeks.
“Sure.” Ron said wondering why she had abruptly turned away. He followed her into the room
looking to see that Malfoy, no he would call him Draco from this day forward, Draco was asleep.
He was tossing and turning in the bed and with a soft cry Pansy rushed to his side. Reaching out she
tried to calm him but it was apparent she was having little success. Draco continued to thrash on the
bed as Ron watched. He made up his mind swiftly and walked to the other side of the bed and placed
his hands on the other boy’s shoulders.
He felt the shivers running through the boy’s body. They couldn’t stop him from thrashing about
and Ron was beginning to fear that he was going to hurt himself. A flailing hand smacked him in the
side of his head and Ron grimaced, he murmur softly, “You get that one for free Draco, next one
will cost you.”
Pansy giggled when she heard Ron, “Good one.”
“Go get Madam Pomfrey before this git knocks my head clear off my shoulders,” Ron joked with
the girl looking up he smiled at her.
She caught her breath as she stared at a sight she never thought that she would see. Ron Weasley
smiling at her. Genuinely smiling. Her head fluttered and she blushed as she quickly turned away.
Ron watched as she hurried away a confused expression on his face. She was acting very weird
tonight, he thought. He chalked it up to her concern for Draco and turned his attention back to the
boy twitching under his hands. Ron looked down and studied the face of one of his oldest enemies.
He was starting to see what Harry saw in him. Suddenly Draco moaned and jerked his body up right
forcing Ron to move backward or risk having his face smashed in by the other boys.
Draco’s breath was coming in short painful sounding gasps. He was sweating and it started dripping
from his face onto his clenched hands. His face was scrunched up as if in pain and his eyes were shut
tight. He was shaking so hard now that his teeth were beginning to chatter. He reached out his hand
to grasp something in front of him and when his hand closed over whatever it was that he had
reached for all the tension left his body and he smiled a smile of pure love and happiness. Ron was
astonished by what he saw. Draco whispered out something and then fell back onto the bed once
again sleeping peacefully no sign of the anguish he had just shown anywhere.
Ron’s mind took seconds to process what he had seen and then he knew, like he knew that he was a
Weasley, that Draco returned the feelings of a certain dark haired friend of his because what Draco
Malfoy had just whispered was ‘Harry’.
Madam Pomfrey and Pansy came running into the room right after Draco had calmed down. She
looked at the boy and then glared suspiciously at the two teens.
“I thought Ms. Parkinson said that Mr. Malfoy was having some kind of seizure?” She said looking
down her nose at them.
Ron blushed at her scrutiny, “He was. He cried out and then lay back down. It was over in a matter
of seconds.”
“Mr. Weasley, what are you doing here?”
“I came to talk to Draco,” Ron haltingly said.
“And why would you want to do that, Weasley?” Came the sarcastic slow drawling voice of the
blonde on the bed.
“Mr. Malfoy you should be asleep.” Madam Pomfrey scolded.
“Well, obviously I am not woman. Leave me.” Draco said sharply ignoring Ron’s astonished look at
the way he talked to the medi-witch.
“Mr. Malfoy...” she began warningly, “I won’t have any of your shenanigans today mind you.” She
smiled at Draco and reached out to riffle Draco‘s hair.
“Arg! How many times must I tell you to NOT TOUCH THE HAIR!” Draco snarled at her while
trying to tame the mess she had just made of his normally neat hairstyle.
Pansy, by this time, was laughing so hard that she was bending at the waist holding her sides. Ron
was staring at the medi-witch and her patient as if he had just won an all expense paid trip to St.
Mungo’s. Ron kept swinging his stunned gaze from Pansy, who looked like she could barely stand
because of her mirth. To Draco, who was frantically waving his hand in front of his head trying to
stop the obviously deranged Madam Pomfrey from messing up his perfect hair. To Madam Pomfrey,
who had the biggest smile on her face as she teased the furious blonde.
“Umm, what?” Ron asked.
Pansy gasped out between peals of laughter, “They always act like this.”
“I see.” Ron said even though it was clear that he did not.
Madam Pomfrey turned to leave now that her goal had been accomplished, stopping at the door she
turned to address Ron, “Mr. Weasley you have fifteen minutes and then I must insist that you
leave.” She left with waiting for a reply leaving a stunned Ron, a still giggling Pansy, and a very
furious Draco who was trying to fix the mess she had made of his hair.
“Insufferable woman. Why does she pester me so? I have never done anything to her to deserve
this.” He complained bitterly but there was still an underlying hint of amusement.
Pansy giggled and said, “She does it because she likes you Draco. She kind of has to you know.”
“Has too?” Ron questioned.
Draco glared at his best friend in an attempt to get her to shut her big mouth but she ignored him
completely. It was not working, his glare wasn’t working, what had Harry done to him? It was
inconceivable that his glare didn’t work.
“Parkinson...” Draco growled warningly.
Pansy was ignoring him and she knew that he knew that she was. It made her feel giddy to know that
she was about to reveal one of Draco’s biggest secrets.
“Well, he spends so much time in here that they have really gotten close. Besides, she is his
Godmother, so that kind of means she has to like him.”
“Pansy Parkinson when I get out of this bed.” Draco started to say.
“Pish Posh Malfoy. What are you going to do?” Pansy waved off his threat airily.
Ron just watched as they bantered back and forth. His head swivelled like he was watching one of
those muggle tennis matches that he had seen at Hermione’s house on the telblyvision. The
expression on his face would have garnered more laughs from the two Slytherins if they had even
remember that he was there.
Draco humrped and crossed his arms, “Can we say karaoke, Parkinson?” He snarled.
“Draco,” Pansy said in a shocked voice, “you wouldn’t?”
“Wouldn’t I?” Draco asked with a raise of a slim silver eyebrow.
Ron cleared his throat and they glanced at him in surprise, they had forgotten that he was there.
“Karaoke?” He asked timidly.
Pansy jumped in before Draco had a chance to answer that question. She saw the evil look in his
eyes and knew she was going to pay for it later. “Didn’t you come here to say something to Draco,
Ron?”
Draco looked at her knowingly and his look said that she would pay later. “Yes. Weasley, what are
you doing here and why would you think I would want to talk to you?”
Ron’s face was flushed but he held his temper in check. “I have come here to apologize to you
Draco.”
Draco watched the red haired Gryffindor calculatingly. “For what?”
“For the last six years.”
“Why?”
“Well Harry,” Ron started to say before Draco interrupted him.
“Potter? You are here because Potter told you to come here and make this pathetic excuse for an
apology?” Draco snarled.
Ron glanced quickly at Pansy in confusion. Why was Draco so mad?
“No, Harry doesn’t know that I am here. He did not send me. I came on my own because with
everything that has happened I felt that I needed to apologize to you and I will be apologizing to the
others as well.”
“Why?” The blonde stated bluntly.
“Draco...” Pansy said softly.
Draco looked to her and what he saw made him glance quickly back at Ron and then back to her. At
his raised eyebrow she nodded once and he looked back to the red haired boy standing before him.
He spent a few moments watching him as he fidgeted under his stare.
“Look Weasley,” he started was interrupted by a cough from Pansy. He shot her a glare but started
over. “Look Ron, you don’t have to apologize.”
“Yes, I do Draco. And I have my speech all planned out and since you can’t go anywhere you will
just have to lay there and listen to me.” Ron smirked at the irate Slytherin.
“Fine if I must then get on with it.” Draco sneered back.
“Draco, I have hated you since before I met you. And it has just recently come to my attention that I
hated you for reasons that were not yours. What I mean to say was. Damn it this was so much easier
when I was walking here.” Ron sighed and ran his hand through his hair frustratingly.
“I hated you because my father hated yours. This last week has taught me a few things. You are not
your father Draco Malfoy, no matter how much of a slimy git you are that is the reason I am here. I
am sorry for everything that I have done to you or said to you and I promise to never call you Ferret
King again.”
Draco snorted and Pansy had to fight back a giggle, “Ferret King? Is that what you call me?”
Ron blushed, “Well, no, that’s not all but I won’t call you that anymore.”
Draco looked at him for a few moments before reaching out his hand, “Apology accepted.”
Ron also reached out his hands and a momentous occasion happened with only one other witness,
Draco Malfoy and Ron Weasley had just shook hands.
