Author's Note: I apologize for the delay in posting but tonight was the first time I've had a chance to write a new chapter since I wrote the last. I've had a lot happen since then and everything has been very busy. I hope you like this chapter. There really isn't much interaction between the boys, either together or with Severus, but Albus finally tells his Potions Master what he thinks of everything. I do hope you like it and please, review as much as you like. I love reading what you guys have to say about the story as it evolves, both in my own head and on paper.
Draco woke before Harry the next morning and lay there watching him for a few moments. He couldn’t believe that the Gryffindor was finally his and it made him so happy that he failed to remember how much Harry hated being watched while he slept; especially first thing in the morning. Green eyes slowly opened to see silver eyes looking at him lovingly from above. Instead of muttering about insufferable Slytherin gits who had nothing better to do than disturb his sleep by watching him he smiled and pulled the blonde to him, kissing him passionately.
“Well, that was different from every other morning you’ve woken up to me watching you sleep,” Draco said softly with a smile once they pulled apart.
Harry chuckled and kissed him again, “True, but I didn’t even feel grumpy this morning once I saw your face. I don’t know why, but it must have something to do with the bond. I don’t care what the reason is, either, as long as I can continue to wake up with you forever.”
Draco kissed him once more, happier than he had ever been, “Well, husband of mine, what would you like to do today?”
The Gryffindor grinned at being called Draco’s husband, “I don’t know, husband of mine, what would you like to do?”
The blonde leaned over once more and nuzzled Harry’s neck, causing him to lean his head to the other side in order to give his lover more access. He moaned softly as teeth and tongue worshiped his sensitive flesh.
“Mmm,” Draco murmured, “perhaps staying in bed would be a good start.”
“I couldn’t agree more,” Harry said huskily then pulled Draco closer.
Neither of them left their rooms all day, nor did they leave the next day. They were barely seen the rest of the weekend and no one bothered to question where they were or what was going on. Severus had returned to the school and, although he had not seen either of his ex lovers, he did not think anything of it. He knew that they did not want to see him and he was not really sure if he wanted to see them either. For his part, he was staying in his own rooms to avoid contact with them, completely unaware that had he left said rooms he would not have seen them anyhow. The only person who saw them regularly was the Headmaster, who smiled at them happily and winked whenever he caught their eyes.
Albus was thrilled to see the two young men happier than he had seen them in quite a while. It made him realize even more how right of him it had been to suggest what he did. Both Harry and Draco did not even wonder where Severus was; it was as if they had forgotten he existed at all. A welcomed side effect of the bonding, though neither of them was aware of it, was that they hardly thought of or remembered what had happened between the two of them and Severus, let alone that anything had ever happened between the three of them at all. The magic of their union made it nearly impossible for either of them to remember that there had ever been anyone but each other.
In fact, this may have been Dumbledore’s main reason for bringing the bonding up in the first place; an ulterior motive, if you will, to help the boys forget the betrayal of their ex lover. And although he did not regret helping them, he knew he would have a very irate, wounded Potions Master on his hands once Severus learned of what had transpired while he had been away. Albus felt that the man had no right to be upset, what with the circumstances that had led to the early bonding, and he planned to tell him so once Severus confronted him for details.
Monday morning finally shone bright and all of the students groaned as they headed for the Great Hall for breakfast. Everyone moaned and groaned over porridge and toast about having to go back to classes now that the hols were over. Groups of friends at each table gossiped about things that had happened over the break and what presents they had received. Most students were overjoyed, some were less than thrilled (mainly because being back meant they had to deal with homework and professors even though they got to see their friends again), but only two ignored everything around them as they ate.
Draco and Harry sat practically by themselves at the very end of the Slytherin table, they had been sitting there on and off whenever they actually went down to the Great Hall for breakfast instead of eating in their rooms, feeding each other, smiling, laughing and kissing. Neither noticed the dark look they received from the staff table nor did they even think to look in that direction.
Severus sat there, his breakfast untouched and his coffee cold, watching Harry and Draco. They looked as if what happened the last time he saw him had not affected them at all. In a way, he was glad for that fact, but mostly he was irritated that they could forget him so easily, so quickly. It was almost like they never remembered having been with him for so many months. Like they forgot the love, both physical and emotional, the three of them had shared. He decided that he would wait until later that day to jump to conclusions. Draco had Potions later that day and Severus wanted to get to the bottom of this.
Throughout the day Draco and Harry had most classes together. The only morning class they were separated during happened right before lunch and once they saw each other again they ran to each other, confused and happy. Neither had realized it would be difficult to be apart once they were bonded, even for a short period of time like a class, and decided to go to the Headmaster and see what he said. He assured them that, if it would make them more comfortable, they could attend classes together from now on. They agreed, thanked him, and left his office smiling in order to eat lunch before their afternoon classes.
The rest of their classes, leading up to the last of the day, were peaceful and uneventful. Both had the same classes to attend after lunch, minus Potions which Harry had a free period for anyhow, and even though they usually attended said classes separately and at different times, none of their professors questioned them when they both showed up to the classes together instead of when they were supposed to. The last class of the day found them in the dungeons.
Neither felt apprehensive about where they were or whom they would see. In fact, both of them were leaning into each other against a wall, whispering words of love and stealing kisses as they waited for the time when they would have to finally enter the classroom. Severus barely noticed their display, as he was in the room behind his desk and could not see either of them from where he was sitting, but when they entered together, he raised a brow at them as if to ask them what Harry was doing there. They sat and ignored him completely.
When the time for him to begin class arrived, Severus stalked over to the desk they were sitting at and, attempting to be as menacing as possible, leaned over to hiss at them, “Potter, what the hell are you doing here?”
Harry looked up, a shadow of some unidentified emotion crossing his face before he answered, “The Headmaster said Draco and I could attend classes together so, since I have a free period while Draco has Potions, I came with him. Why?”
Severus stared at them for a moment. They knew better than to get all kissy faced during class, but he saw how they were constantly touching each other and it was enough to set him on edge and, inevitably, piss him off even more than he had been previously.
“I see,” he seethed, “Leave. Now. You are no longer in this class and I will not tolerate your presence in this room. I don’t give a whit that you want to be with your little boyfriend and that it bothers you to be away from him for any period of time. This is a school, Potter, and you would do well to remember that. Neither I, nor the other professors, have to work around your schedule, nor should any of us have to tolerate the fact that you wish to be in his presence every moment of every day. You are not welcome here.”
Draco frowned, placing a hand, his left hand, on Harry’s arm to prevent him from saying something that would make the situation worse, “Professor, I’m sure if you were to go to the Headmaster, he would tell you that our schedules have been changed to accommodate recent events.”
Harry’s other hand, his left, came up to intertwine with the fingers of Draco’s hand, which was on his right arm. Severus noticed the matching rings on their fingers and stumbled away from them, grasping desperately for his desk to steady himself. Both of them looked at him oddly, worriedly, as he reclaimed his faculties and calmed himself.
“Professor,” Harry said softly, “are you alright?”
He eyed them wearily, once and for all realizing that the way they were acting was perfectly normal for a bonded couple. They could not actually remember that he had been their lover until recently. Both of them merely remembered that they did not hate him, perhaps that they had some sort of feelings for him like friendship, but neither would, could, remember that they had once loved him; it was the nature of the magic.
Severus shook his head and swallowed, his voice a hoarse whisper when he finally forced the words out of his mouth, “I’m fine. I will allow you to stay this class and for the remainder of the year as long as you don’t distract Mr. Malfoy or any of the other students.”
Harry just nodded and smiled, giving Draco a quick kiss on the cheek before pulling out his work for another class and setting about getting some of his homework done while he was there. The class went quickly with Draco and Harry holding a soft conversation while Draco brewed his potion and Harry worked on other things. Snape never said anything to them about not talking, mainly because he could not believe what they had done when they had returned to the castle. Once class was over Draco and Harry left the room and the dungeons hand in hand. Severus made up his mind to go up to Albus’ office and get some answers out of the old man.
Albus had been expecting Severus to show up before the day was through and when he heard the terse knock on his office door he knew who was on the other side.
“Come in, Severus,” he said softly.
Snape pushed the door opened and stalked in, as was his custom, and practically threw himself into the chair before the Headmaster’s desk.
“Tea?”
Severus nodded and took the proffered cup that was pushed towards him then sipped it quietly. He was trying to find the words to explain why he was there, how he felt about this whole thing, but they were stuck in his throat. Sensing the inner struggle within his Potions professor, Albus finally spoke.
“Severus, you knew this would happen.”
He grunted and refused to look at the older man. Albus went on, “They told me everything, Severus. How could you have expected them to not want this after what you did?”
Still refusing to meet the twinkling blue gaze Severus spoke, “I didn’t expect them to bond so soon and I didn’t think they could forget me so….quickly,” he finished quietly.
Albus sighed and removed his half moon spectacles to rub at his tired eyes, “Severus, what did you expect them to do? They walked in to find you with your ex lover, who I might add is the father of one of them, kissing passionately and practically humping each other’s legs. Did you think they would just get over you ordering them to leave?”
“I did no such thing,” he said half-heartedly.
The older man snorted, “No, I suppose you didn’t. However, failing to correct Lucius when he did was worse than if the words had come out of your mouth in the first place. Can you not understand what that did to the two of them? Especially Draco. The poor boys were devastated when they got here and once they calmed down enough to explain what had happened I was appalled, to say the least, that you had been involved in the way that you were. I cannot tell you how disappointed in you I am.”
Severus’ resolve crumbled and he buried his face in his hands. His voice was choked when he next spoke, “Albus, they were so distant from me; I had assumed they planned to break it off with me anyhow and I was trying to save myself from being hurt when they finally did. Lucius was there to catch me when I fell and I let him. I know I shouldn’t have acted the way I did but I couldn’t help it; I refused to let them throw me away!”
“Is that what you think would have happened?” Albus asked his voice filled with wonder. Snape nodded and Albus shook his head then spoke once more, “Then you are a bigger fool than I thought. They had no intention of leaving you, ever, and were crushed when you turned them away.”
Severus swallowed thickly and almost let lose and anguished sob, “They couldn’t have forgotten me so easily, even with the magic of the bonding, had they not wanted to.”
“For Merlin’s sake Severus, of course they wanted to after what you and Lucius did to them!” Albus said exasperatedly.
The Potions Master’s head snapped up at the Headmaster’s words and a scowl formed on his face, “And I suppose it is all my fault, hmm? That I deserve what has happened to me?”
The old man nodded, “Of course it is, you ungrateful, bitter man. Had you taken the time to see what was right in front of you all along you would have realized that you could do no better than Harry and Draco. Unfortunately, you were too ignorant to see it and now you have lost them both forever. The only thing I can say to you is that I hope you will be happy with Lucius. That is, if he stays with you this time. Merlin knows he didn’t last time and I have no idea what makes you think he won’t leave you again now that he’s gotten what he wants.”
Snape sat there looking shocked. Albus had never spoken to him, or anyone else for that matter, like this before. He could not believe the hateful, yet true, words that had come from the normally kind Headmaster’s mouth. He also could not help but think that everyone was against him in this.
“He won’t leave me again. He loves me,” he said with conviction.
Albus smirked, “Are you trying to convince me? Or are you trying to convince yourself, Severus?”
Severus scowled and jumped to his feet, “I refuse to sit here and take this from you. I don’t have to explain myself to you, or anyone else.”
“You should have explained yourself to Harry and Draco, but now it’s too late and they won’t remember what you’re talking about should you try,” he said a little coldly.
“They don’t deserve and explanation!”
“They didn’t deserve to be used then cast aside when you tired of them!”
“I didn’t cast them aside, they betrayed me!”
Albus went to yell a response but stopped himself then looked at the irate man before him with shocked surprise, “It really is always about you, isn’t it?” he asked softly, but mostly to himself.
“I did nothing wrong, Albus, and if you can’t see that then you’re a bigger fool than I thought.”
“Oh please, you wretched excuse for a man. Those boys did nothing but love you and dote on you from the moment they realized their feelings. Harry went back in time, risking his very life and mental stability, to save your worthless life and this is how you repay him? And Draco loved you despite everything he knew of your past. Is this what you do to repay kindness and love? You do not deserve either of them and whatever happens with Lucius, I’ve no doubt in my mind that you will deserve whatever heartache he causes you. In fact, I hope it hurts.”
“How dare you speak to me in such a way, you barmy old coot! I gave them everything, everything, and they repaid me by sneaking around behind my back with each other!”
“They were sneaking around behind your back?” he asked dryly. Severus nodded. “And what were they doing behind your back that they didn’t have every right to do with each other? They were not just with you; they were also with each other. What makes you think that the only time they should have been allowed to be together was when you were there as well? Are you so arrogant that you feel you were the only one they should have loved? That it was not right for them to love each other as well? Must I remind you that the two of them had been together before you even entered the picture?”
“That is not the point, old man. They hadn’t even slept together when they approached me to join their relationship,” he sneered.
Albus nodded, “I see, and because of this you felt that they hadn’t had anything worth mentioning before you were with them. That is the most arrogant, moronic thing I have ever heard you say, Severus. Just because they had never had sex does NOT mean they were not in love before you. In fact, I am proud of them for realizing their feelings for one another before becoming physical in such a sense. Though, I do think it’s a shame that their first times weren’t with each other, but with you, seeing as you abandoned them at the first sign of them loving each other.”
“Of course I felt that way, it was my right! The two of them were nothing before they got involved with me and now they act as if I am nothing to them! It is uncalled for and arrogant of them to do so.”
“Sweet Merlin, I hear Lucius speaking with your voice, Severus. May I remind you that they cannot remember what you were to them or your betrayal of them? Because that is what it was, Severus. Your betrayal, not theirs,” he said sadly.
Severus scoffed, “Seriously Albus, they’re children.”
“Yes, children that you took to your bed and professed to love,” Albus said with a smirk, knowing that would rile him.
He turned red, “How dare…” Severus took a moment to compose himself then spoke again, “I’m leaving. Good evening, Headmaster.”
“Mmm, good evening Severus.” When he reached the door the Headmaster spoke once more, “Oh, and Severus, don’t make me remind you that should you treat either of them unfairly you’ll be called on the carpet for it and risk losing your job.”
The Potions Master growled and nodded his head as he swept from the office. Dumbledore sat behind his desk with a smug look on his face, mentally patting himself on the back for telling his professor exactly how he felt. He was normally a very quiet, gentle man but Severus had gotten on his last nerve when he hurt Draco and Harry and Albus refused to stand by and let his self-destructive attitude ruin the young boys’ lives. He had stepped in and helped fate along and did not regret it one bit. Especially not the part where he got the chance to tell the snarky man off once and for all. If anything, that made his life, not just his day, brighter.
