Chapter 19
Surprise, I'm Your Daughter!
Hermione had just come downstairs when she heard a familiar voice in the floo. "Hermione, are you there?" She hadn't been expecting company, and really wasn't sure if she was up for it, but Harry didn't visit that often, and she thought she might be able to tell him what she had found out.
"Coming. I'll be there in just a second." She walked into the parlor, and had to grab the back of a chair for support. James and Sirius were with him, and they had caught her completely off guard. Furthermore, the box containing her mother's things was left open on the table top. At any moment Sirius could look down and see the picture of her.
"Hermione, are you all right?" Sirius went to her side and helped her to the sofa. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
"I'm fine that's all. Just went a little too fast down the stairs."
"Well you should be careful. If you're anything like Lily was when she was pregnant, you're probably falling and tripping over everything." James sat down in an armchair, and Harry sat as well.
"What are you all doing here? If you're looking for Severus, he's gone to Hogwarts. He had a few things to clear up before we take our break."
"No, we just thought we'd come and see you." Sirius placed a comforting hand on her arm.
"Oh, well that's alright."
Hermione summoned an elf and got them all a light lunch of sandwiches and fresh juice. They talked about Ginny and anything else she could think of. She kept changing subjects so quickly that even Harry caught on to her. "What's wrong Herm? You're acting strange."
"Nothing's wrong. Nothing at all." She was nervous and reached for the first thing she could grab to occupy her trembling hands. It just so happened to be the charm bracelet. "Why do you ask?" She began fumbling with the clasp on the bracelet, and Sirius noticed she needed some help.
"Here, let me help you with that." Hermione pulled her arm away from him when he touched her, and managed to drop the bracelet to the floor. Sirius had a puzzled look on his face, and reached down to pick it up.
"This is very nice. I bought a bracelet identical to it for someone a long time ago." Hermione heard the pain in his words. He obviously had loved her very much. "I didn't know they even made them anymore."
"Let me see that." James went over and looked at the bracelet. "That's just like the one you got for Maddie, isn't it?"
"Yes, exactly like it."
Harry was confused by their conversation. "Who is Maddie?"
"She was a woman I loved a long time ago. She and her family were killed by Voldemort. It was all my fault. If I hadn't gotten involved with her, then Voldemort wouldn't have killed her in order to get to me." Hermione noticed the guilt in Sirius' voice, and realized that he blamed himself for her death. In that instant, she decided to tell him the truth. He obviously had been blaming himself for 23 years. In her eyes, he had put himself through enough.
"Hey Harry, why don't you show you dad around. He's never been here before and the gazebo is absolutely beautiful overlooking the lake. Just don't tromp around much out there. Severus has many ingredients growing in the fields outside. He'd kill you if you destroyed his supply." Harry looked at her like she'd grown another head, but James caught onto the hint.
"Come on son. I'm dying to see all the horrid things that I know he's hiding here. Let's go and explore a bit, shall we?"
"Sure. We'll be back in a bit." James led Harry out the door, and thoughtfully shut it behind them.
Sirius couldn't quite understand why Hermione had basically thrown Harry and James out of the room. "What's going on Hermione? You've been acting really strange ever since we arrived. I'm almost getting the feeling that you don't want us here."
"Sirius, I do want you here. Believe me I do. You just surprised me. That's all. As for what is going on here, well, I truthfully don't know."
She sat back down on the sofa, and motioned for him to join her. "Sirius, please believe me when I say that I had no idea any of what I'm about to tell you existed until yesterday. I was in the dark just as much as you are. And please believe me that I am sorry that I have to tell you like this. Really, there's not any easier method, so I'm just going to be bold and tell you."
"Hermione? What are you talking about? All this secret?"
"Sirius, what do you remember about the night you thought Madeline died?"
"Hermione, how do you know about her? Did Snape tell you about her? This is her bracelet isn't it?" Sirius grabbed her wrist, and he was squeezing it very tightly.
"Sirius, just tell me what you know. Then I'll fill you in on all that I know. And yes, this is her bracelet."
He let her wrist go limp, and then started telling her what he knew. "Her family had been under attack from Voldemort. He wanted her father to acquire some very illegal ingredients for him, and her father resisted. Her relationship with me made her even more of a target. Voldemort would have done anything to get his hands on any one of the three of us, James, Remus, me. We all were targets of his. And thus, it made anyone close to us a target, hence Maddie's involvement."
"When was the last time you spoke to her?"
"She had owled me to meet her in Hogsmeade the night she and her family died. She said she had exciting news. I had been in Auror training and wasn't allowed visits during the week. That Friday, I went to Hogsmeade, but it was too late. The word on the street was that her family was caught completely off guard. Seven death eaters and Voldemort surrounded their house and made it explode. They fought like the Goddamn cowards they were." Sirius' face was flushed, and his fists were clenched tight.
"What happened after that?"
"Remus came over and comforted me. From that moment on, I devoted every drop of sweat, every breathing moment to finding that fucking bastard and killing him before he hurt someone else I loved." Hermione reached out to comfort him, and he took her hand. "How do you know about Maddie? How did you get her bracelet?"
Hermione took a deep breath and answered his questions. "There wasn't anything left of the house, or her family. She wasn't there."
Sirius' red faced turned pale, and he had a puzzling look on his face. "Maddie's alive?"
Hermione shook her head, and Sirius once again felt a vice grip his heart. "As for how I know about her, she was my birth mother, and she left this bracelet and this picture," she reached for it and handed it to Sirius, "to me when she died." She felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off of her shoulders. She had told him, now all she had to do was let him process the information.
"Your mother? I didn't know you were adopted Hermione. You never told us."
"Sirius, I never knew until yesterday. My mum told Severus and I when we went there to retrieve the rest of my belongings. They had no intentions of ever letting me find out, but they got worried when the found out I was pregnant. Maddie died giving birth to me at a muggle hospital in London."
"She died giving birth to you? It doesn't add up. You're about ten months older than Harry. She die—disappeared about 8 months or so before Lily found out she was pregnant. She would have had to been pregnant before she disappeared. She loved me. I know she wouldn't have been carrying on with someone else."
"Sirius, she knew she was pregnant. She wasn't seeing someone else. Only you. That's what she wanted to tell you the night she disappeared. I know it in my heart. She wanted to tell you that she was pregnant with me. It all fits. My birthday is in September. She would have conceived in January. She would have known by the Easter Holiday."
Sirius raised his eyes to hers, and she literally could feel the moment he truly realized what she was telling him. "Then that means— You're my— Oh dear God come here." Sirius had tears streaming down his cheeks to match the ones Hermione had been crying throughout the entire conversation. "My God Hermione. You're my daughter." He held her so close that he could feel the baby protesting at the sudden closeness.
"Yes, I'm your daughter Sirius." She held him firmly and he kissed her face several times. They heard the floo, and Hermione knew that Severus was back.
"Thank heavens. It's still standing." Sirius and Hermione pulled apart, both looking at Severus and Remus. "Oi love, told you did she?"
"You knew Moony? How did you"—"
"I told him. Hermione, please forgive me but I went to Hogwarts to visit with Remus. I told him all that we found out yesterday and wanted to confirm everything with him before you told Sirius. If he wasn't your father, then I wanted to know. Though, it appears to be true by the way you're both blubbering."
Severus approached her and gave her a kiss on her forehead. "I am sorry that I didn't tell you the complete truth of why I was visiting Hogwarts, but I wanted to know. I had to know."
"I forgive you Severus."
"And Sirius, I had no idea that Severus was going to tell me all that he did. I never would have sent you over here if I had known beforehand. Please believe me love."
"I do Remus, I do. Can you believe this? I have a daughter. A gorgeous, bright, talented," he looked down at her stomach, "very pregnant daughter!"
Hermione was simply glowing. She felt love and happiness radiating from Sirius. She wanted nothing else than to make up for the lost time they'd had apart. "Sirius, there's something else, about her death. She died from blood loss due to giving birth."
"We suppose that means she never told them she was a witch. She let them try giving her muggle blood. She essentially killed herself." Severus was never one for subtlety.
"How could she have done that?" Sirius still had tears streaming down his cheeks.
Remus pulled his lover to him, and gently kissed his cheek. "Siri, she did what she thought was right to protect her child. Imagine if Voldemort would have known that you had a child. Hermione would have been the first target to get to you. She protected her by giving her up for adoption. It all makes sense."
Severus felt he should try and help Sirius understand. "I can honestly say that Voldemort had no idea that she had lived through the raid on her house. Of course by then, I wasn't completely trusted by him, I was already spying for Albus."
"She died to protect me as well. By not knowing I had a child, I wasn't forced to choose between that child and my best friend. Heaven bless that woman." Hermione showed him the rest of the contents of the box, and asked him if he knew what her name meant.
"She insisted that I would know what it means, but I haven't the slightest idea."
Sirius carefully said her name over and over while pacing the room. "Hermione, Her mine, Hero mine, Hero in me."
"Hero In Me." Hermione felt chills go down her spine, and she and Sirius held out their goose bumped arms.
"She wasn't a seer was she?" Severus shook his head in confusion, and Remus followed suit.
"She was rather fond of Divination. Did rather well to tell you the truth. But I can't say for sure if she knew about the future or not. The name fits though doesn't it? She was a hero for saving you and essentially saving me from Voldemort. And you are a hero for the roles you've played protecting that Godson of my over the past twelve years."
"Not to mention you managed to tame Severus into a somewhat likable person." Remus chided, and Severus used his best scowl once again.
"Well, one thing's for certain. You've obviously inherited your fathers distaste for Divination. I remember all the things your lot would do to Trelawney. That poor woman still has nightmares." Remus and Sirius blushed, and Hermione just laughed.
"Well, I'd say some of the nightmares are from this generation of Marauder's if you ask me. If I had a knute for every time Ron and Harry predicted they'd die, I'd be well off."
"Speaking of Potter, Hermione, please tell me that they've left this house."
"Severus, they wanted to see our home. I told Harry to go and show James the manor so that I could talk to Sirius alone."
"Dear God Hermione! You were included in his escapades for 7 years at school. When a Potter explores, there's disaster ahead." Severus stormed out the door, and found them sitting quietly in the kitchen eating dessert.
"Well, at least you two haven't destroyed my home. Come on into the parlor. Sirius and Hermione have something to share with you." They followed Severus back into the parlor, and Hermione retold the story to James and Harry.
When the story was finished, Harry was a bit puzzled about something. "Hermione, remember in our second year, you were petrified by the basilisk. How could that have happened if you are a pureblood witch?"
"Harry, the basilisk petrified a pureblood ghost, and a cat. It would have done the same to anyone else that saw it's reflection. Pureblood or not. It didn't matter. Tom Riddle only knew what everyone else did about Hermione. He had no idea that she was a pureblood witch." Severus was quick to answer.
After a few moments Harry started laughing hysterically. "Something amusing Harry?" Remus was interested in what Harry found so funny.
James obviously had caught on, because he too started laughing. "Name one reason why Sirius wouldn't want Hermione as a daughter?" Both Severus and Sirius looked like they could kill James.
"I can think of one reason," said Harry jokingly. Severus walked up to him and grabbed him by the collar.
"Don't let me stop you. Do tell us why you feel that my wife isn't good enough to be Sirius Black's daughter." Harry tried to hide his laughter but he couldn't suppress it.
"Because, he now has Severus Snape for his son-in-law." Harry and James both broke out laughing again, and even Remus had to hide his mirth. Severus released him with a shove, and Harry fell over the back of the sofa.
"Oh dear. Consider your pasts together. It is ironic isn't it?" Remus joined them in the laughter, and Hermione smiled as she pulled Sirius in for a hug.
"I suppose you find it funny as well." Sirius looked down at her.
"No, it's just that daughter's always try to marry the last person their parents would approve of."
Severus was becoming furious. "Why do you all find this so amusing? I am hardly ecstatic that Black will be my child's grandfather."
"Oh god. I hadn't thought about that." Remus was crying right now, and Sirius paled.
"I'm going to be a grandfather. Imagine that. Learning that you have a daughter and that you're going to be a grandfather all in the same day."
"And the grandfather of a Snape, no less." Severus reached for his wand, and glared at Harry. Hermione went to his side, and wrapped her arms around him.
"It's going to be okay, isn't it?" He quirked an eyebrow at her, and used his best drawl.
"If your friend keeps on making comments like the ones he has made thus far, I believe he will find himself somewhere in the middle of Iceland." She wasn't affected by his tone, but the other's quieted down. Hermione had one more thing she wanted to ask Sirius.
"Sirius, or should I say dad," she shuddered, "Would you care to stay here for a while? I've got a ton of questions to ask you."
"Sure, Remus, you don't have any objections do you?"
"None. I've been thinking on a variation of the Wolfsbane and I'd like the time to run my theory by Severus."
"I have time to listen to your theory." Severus poured everyone a drink, and summoned a house elf to bring Hermione some warm milk. "A toast to my wife and her new found family." Everyone clinked their glasses together, and then Hermione began to laugh.
"Hmmm.. I guess that makes Remus my step-mum, doesn't it?"
"As much as he is my FAIRY God-mother." Remus shot Harry a glare, that dared him to repeat his last sentence. James and Harry stayed for a while, but left when they knew Ginny and Lily would be back to Godric's Hollow. Sirius and Hermione spent the rest of the afternoon reminiscing and discussing Sirius' family. They had 23 years of catching up to do, and they weren't going to waste any time getting started.
Remus and Severus busied themselves with several games of chess before dinner. Then decided to get some of Remus and Sirius' things so they could stay for a while. Hermione and Sirius would need time to get to know each other again, but as father and daughter this time.
They had finished dinner and were all in the parlor when James' black head popped into the fire. "Hullo? You all there?"
Sirius laughed at his friend. "James, will you ever outgrow your fear of firecall. You must open your eyes to see us."
"Oh, yeah, right Paddy. Sorry. Look. I'm glad you're all there. Ginny has went into labor and we're all at Hogwarts. It appears that my granddaughter has chosen to enter this world afterall."
Hermione giggled with delight, and could just imagine how Molly must be acting. And Harry, oh he was probably a bundle of nerves. "Do you need us there?"
"No, Madam Pomfrey says it seems that Ginny will take a while to have her. I'll just keep you all informed. With the entire Weasley clan in the infirmary, there's hardly any room for another person." James advised them that he would be keeping in touch, and would tell them of any progress.
When he was gone, Hermione rubbed her belly, and sighed. "I'm so happy for her. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever give birth."
"It's not time yet love. You'll have him. When he is ready to enter this world, he'll let you know. I'm sure."
"And by the way, now that I have a blood connection to this child growing inside you, can we please discuss his name?" Sirius had a name of his own that he felt would be appropriate for the boy, but Severus wasn't listening.
"No way Black. Blood or not. You are most certainly not naming my child." Severus rose and started stomping off towards his laboratory. He kept a special blended whiskey down there. Sirius followed behind him rattling off names.
"What about Oscar? Albert? Paddy Jr.?"
"Oh dear," Remus strolled over beside her and sat down on the couch, "Your mother most definitely knew what she was doing when she named you. Any woman that can keep those two from hexing each other is definitely a hero."
"She sure did, didn't she?"
