Disclaimer: It’s not mine! *sob* Harry, all of his
friends, and the entirety of Potterverse all belong to J.K. Rowling and I swear
that I’m not making any money off of it. BUT…Marvin is mine, mine, mine and if
you touch him I will hex you into oblivion
Chapter 19: As the Dust Settles
Marvin smiled at Harry after being
pulled up off the floor. “Well, I told you not to think I was helpless, now
didn’t I?”
Harry began to chuckle and that’s
when Marvin looked over the wizard’s shoulder to see that a Death Eater had
managed to slip away from the main fight and was aiming his wand at Harry’s
back.
Harry looked confused. “What…?”
Marvin grabbed his friend and spun
him about, stepping in front of him, holding out the platter, and praying to
God that it would block whatever was coming. Then the Death Eater screamed,
“Avada Kedavra!” The world narrowed down to just him and that green jet of
light as he clung to the platter for dear life. It began to vibrate and heat
up, burning his hands, but he refused to let go, knowing that even if he and
Harry managed to avoid the blast someone else would be hit. Only seconds
passed, but it felt like an eternity as his palms began to blister. Then, the
booming baritone of Severus’ voice broke through Marvin’s concentration.
“Sectumsempra!” The Death Eater
fell to the floor in a bloody heap and Marvin fell backwards into Harry,
knocking them both to the floor. The platter slipped from his hands and he let
them lay in his lap palm up, willing them to cool.
He heard Harry gasp. “Someone get
a mediwitch over here now! Just hold on, Marvin, we’ll have you fixed up in no
time.”
Marvin tried to offer his friend a
reassuring smile, but it turned to a grimace as his hands began to throb.
Severus was soon kneeling beside him. The unconcealed look of concern on the
older man’s face was enough to make him forget his pain for a moment. “Is
everyone else okay?”
Severus snorted, but the concern
never left his eyes. “We have captured nearly all of them with only minimal
injuries on our part.”
Harry gave his shoulder a light
squeeze. “Judging by the number of Death Eaters that showed up I’d say we just
took down half the number that were still at large.”
“Merlin, muggle, you attract
nearly as much trouble as Potter.” Severus was smirking then.
Marvin chuckled and then felt a
bolt of pain shoot from his hands, up his arms and to his head, making him seek
white, then red, and then nothing.

Harry watched his friend lie in a
bed in St. Mungo’s and sighed. He was once again certain that Marvin would
have been a Gryffindor after watching his brave act of near self-sacrifice.
Once things had quieted down, he and Severus had inspected the platter that
Marvin utilized as a shield. The spell had very nearly broken through, leaving
the metal blackened and burnt like paper. If Severus’ spell had come two or
three seconds later Marvin would be dead.
The brave muggle’s hands were
healed and Harry was happy to see that he was starting to rouse. “Marvin…Marv,
can you hear me?”
Marvin’s blue eyes blinked open,
squinted, and then slowly focused in on the room. “Harry? What happened?”
“The healers said that you passed
out from the pain,” Harry said softly. “Not to worry, they have you all healed
and you’ll be out of here by the end of the day.”
“Was it just my imagination, or
were the Death Eaters being led by a house elf?”
Harry offered his friend a wry
smile. “Yeah, that was Dobby.”
“Dobby?!”
“Remember when I told you there
was a lot more to Lucius’ involvement in with Voldemort than you knew? Well,
Dobby had Lucius under the Imperious Curse from the beginnings of the first war
until a little after I defeated Voldemort. Draco was the one who figured out
what was going on after he defected to the side of the light. He managed to
discover Dobby’s treachery and Lucius was released from Azkaban about six
months after the war ended.” Harry smiled at the look of bewilderment on his
friend’s face.
“But…but Dobby’s a house elf…how?”
Harry shrugged. “It turns out
that Dobby actually belonged to Voldemort and managed to insinuate himself into
Lucius’ household. House elves have pretty powerful magic when they are
allowed free reign to use it.”
“Wait a minute, does that mean that
Dobby really was trying to kill you with all those stunts in your second year?”
“We think so, but even though they
failed they worked in his favor anyway.” Harry pulled a chair next to Marvin’s
bed and leaned on his elbows on the edge of the mattress. “Marvin, they’re
going to be sending three people with you when you go home to make sure that
you’re protected. We cleaned up a good portion of their number today, but that
will only make the remainders desperate.”
Harry gave his friend a
sympathetic pat at his crestfallen look. “Its okay, Harry. It might be
interesting to have a few wizards living with me. Too bad, you have to teach.
Who knows what kind of mischief we could have gotten into?”
Laughing, Harry sat back in his
chair. “Don’t worry, Marvin, I fully intend for us to thoroughly enjoy the
next two weeks. I want you to be willing to come and visit me again next
summer before you head off into the workplace.”
“You really don’t have to worry
about that,” Marvin said with a smile. “Wild horses couldn’t drag me away from
Hogwarts. I’ll be back the day after I graduate if I can swing it.”
“Shouldn’t be a problem. I intend
on seeing you graduate. I wouldn’t be surprised if Severus and Ron come along
as well.” Harry grinned at Marvin’s apparent excitement.
“Oh, it’s not funny, Harry! Do
you realize that I wouldn’t have anyone else there if you didn’t come?” Marvin
looked a bit sad and Harry immediately felt bad for speaking without thinking.
He had forgotten about the night Marvin told him about his lack of family. All
that remained was an aunt who lived far away and only wrote once or twice a
year.
“Well, we’ll have to make sure
that you have plenty of friends in the audience then. I’m sure Lucius and
Arthur would be happy…”
“Oh no you don’t!” Marvin was
laughing hard, clutching at his sides, all signs of sadness gone.
Severus came into the room then.
“Well, I see you are feeling better then.”
Marvin became very serious then.
“Severus…I…I don’t know how to…”
Harry watched warily as Severus
held up a hand to stop Marvin’s stuttering. He wondered where this would
lead. Marvin already had so much respect and affection for the surly Potions
Master and this would only increase it ten fold. Hopefully Severus wouldn’t do
anything to hurt the muggle. “You don’t need to say anything, Marvin. I was
not about to let anything happen to the only company I can stand while
brewing. Who would I get to dissect the monkey brains?”
All three of them were laughing
then, and Severus seemed to surprise himself with that. Marvin simply smiled
serenely as the Potions Master quickly composed himself. “Are we able to leave
then,” Marvin asked.
Severus nodded. “Aurors Krivdal
and Krivdal are here to escort us to Hogwarts. They are apparently to be
posted with you for the duration until you graduate this spring.”
“Krivdal and Krivdal,” Marvin
looked very confused. “I didn’t know that Justin has a brother.
“Not a brother,” Harry said with a
smile. “She’s his older sister. Did you see the witch with the strawberry
blonde hair? That’s her and I think Justin said she’s about ten years older
than him, so that’s why you’ve never seen her.”
Harry glanced over at Severus who
looked very thoughtful at the moment. “Yes, I remember her from my early years
of teaching. A rather moody girl named Ginger. Excellent student and a bit of
a loner, but that never hurt anyone.”
Harry snorted. “You would think
so.”
Marvin laughed and hoisted himself
out of bed. “Well, boys, lets get back to the school. I only have two weeks
left and we still need to finish dissecting the sixth book.”
Harry and Severus exchanged a
glance and knew they were both thinking the same thing.
Damn you J.K. Rowling!
A/N: Well folks, there’s only one chapter left, but
don’t worry! If you haven’t gotten enough of Marvin yet there is going to be a
sequel! After I get the final chapter posted I will probably take a couple
weeks and then dive into the sequel, it will start with Marvin’s graduation,
but don’t worry there will be plenty of talk about everything that happens
while Marvin was at school as well as mention of everything that happened
during Draco’s first year as Charms Professor! If you want to see something
specific in the sequel then let me know in the reviews and I promise to try and
work it in.
