Chapter 19 Goodbye
Saturday morning after Sky took her bath and Severus showered, they had breakfast. Sky opened the door into the Headmaster’s office so that Severus could go and speak with him while Sky remained in the wall and packed her things. They left the door open a crack so Severus could return when he finished with the headmaster.
Sky was excited, nervous, happy and sad all at the same time. Her sadness was mainly because this wall had been her home for the best part of three years now. Also, she would have like to have spoken to the Founders again before she left. Entering the living room, she sat on the sofa and looked about her.
“I’m going to miss you house.” She whispered to her self.
“This house will always be open to you, Sky.”
Her head whipped round at the sound of Sal’s voice. “Sal, oh Sal you came back.” Sky knelt on the sofa, her back to the fire so she could speak to Sal face to face.
“I never left. I have always been here. All you needed to do was call my name. Any of our names, and we would have come to you.”
“You would? But I didn’t know. You said I’d see you again, but you didn’t say when, how or why.”
“For that I am sorry, but you know now. Any time you need us Sky, we shall be here.”
“Thanks Sal, not just for that, for everything.”
“You’re welcome. Where is the pain in the arse anyway?”
She giggled. “Shh, he might hear you. He’s talking to the Headmaster about me. Sal?”
“I know dear. You wish to talk about Tom Riddle.”
“Voldemort, Tom Riddle, Dark Lord. Whatever he’s called, I still have to do something about him, don’t I? But I’m scared Sal. What if I can’t beat him? What if he kills Severus? He said if his mark burns he has to answer it. What do I do then?”
“Sky, I thought I had taught you better then that. Take your books with you. You have the wand of bloods and the eyes of the Original. You can solve this one. The knowledge is already inside your head, use it. If you need to speak with me further, you know where to find me. Now go and be happy.”
“I wish I could hug you Sal. Do you know that?”
“I do. I feel the same way, but now you must go and learn to live. And do not let that miserable git push you around.”
“I won’t, I promise.”
Sal disappeared and she lowered her head sadly. When she turned around to sit properly, her eyes on the floor she saw a pair of black boots. Her eyes travelled slowly up the legs that were above them, to the frock coat above that, until she met a pair of black eyes staring at her intently from a face that held a rather displeased expression.
“Severus, how long have you been there?”
“How long have I been a ‘pain in the arse‘?”
“Ah. That long”
“Yes that long, but we shall discuss this later. In the meantime, the Headmaster agreed to our requests and made one of his own.”
“What?”
“He would like to see this house, perhaps meet the Founders. I told him I would put forward his request.”
She looked at him uncertainly then her eyes flitted to the door, making certain it was closed. “I don’t know if they’ll want to, Severus. I’ll have to ask them first.”
“Very well. Would you prefer that I leave while you do so?”
“No of course not. We should ask them together?”
This pleased Severus and he gave her a brief smile.
“I think that would be a good start. I shall help you to finish packing first and then you can call them. That is if you do not mind Albus entering this place.”
“I’m not keen on him coming here. But I know you want him to see it, so I’ll ask them.”
Between them, the packing was soon finished. “What about your potions and ingredients? Are you not bringing them with you?”
“I wasn’t going to. If I need them I can come here and use the lab. Why?”
“Because I have instructed the elves to make you your own potions lab next door to mine. It was going to be a surprise.”
Sky flung her arms round his neck and kissed him. “Thank you, I didn’t realise, but I would still like to come back here sometimes. In fact, I’ll need to Severus.”
“Why would you need to come here when you now have a perfectly good lab at Hogwarts?”
“Because much of what I do is not approved of by your Headmaster. He said something about a ministry finding out. I still need to practice dark magic, Severus. Whether it be potions, dark arts or spells, this is where I will have to come. In here, it can’t be detected by anyone.”
Severus had not considered this but she was right. Any dark magic practiced in Hogwarts would immediately alert the Ministry of Magic. The aurors would be there in an instant. Pity though. He was hoping to have a rifle through her potions stores.
“I see the sense in that. But you can still bring some of your … less dark items with you.”
“Look Severus, I know what you want. Any time you want to raid the stores here, you’re welcome. But it’s best off they stay where they are for now.” She looked at him seriously now. “If you want, I can teach you some of what Sal taught me.”
Severus raised his eyebrows. He would like that. “That would be interesting. But only some?”
“Much of it can only be done using my wand, along with the stone. Especially some of the blood magic.” She touched the stone at her neck. “I don’t think it will work with a normal wand. But we can try.” She added with a smile.
“Very well.” He was disappointed. He did not like the idea that she could do so many things he could not. It was a blow to his male ego more than anything. But it was not her fault and he still wanted to learn what he could. “Call the Founders. We shall see what they have to say about meeting with Albus.”
Sky let go of him but he took her hand in his, keeping a firm but gentle grip. If he were honest with himself, he was nervous about meeting the Founders, especially Salazar Slytherin. It was obvious the man did not like Severus after his original treatment of Sky. He could not say he blamed the man for that but from the brief conversation he heard today they obviously cared a great deal for her. Well they would soon learn that he cared for her too, much more then anyone could ever care for her.
“Sal, Sal have you got a minute please?”
Sal frame appeared in its usual place, Sal’s face lighting up when he saw her then turning into a scowl when he saw the Potions Master.
“What is it Sky? Has he done something to hurt you?”
Severus matched the man’s scowl with one equally as fierce.
Sky looked at them both and frowned.
“Will you two stop it. No Sal, Severus has not done anything to hurt me. He wouldn’t. Not now.” She turned to Severus. “And you stop it too. Sal’s been your hero for most of your life and now you’re looking at him as if he’s your enemy. What is wrong with you two? Scowling at each other like a couple of spoilt children.”
Both men looked at her shocked. She had never spoken to Sal like that before and his eyes were wide with surprise. Severus cleared his throat and turned his scowl on her, put out that he had just been rebuked by a woman, his woman. All three looked up startled when a hearty laugh sounded across the room.
“Rowena.” Sky cried, dashing over to the next frame. “I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too. Now do not worry about those two.” She told Sky. “It’s just testosterone. You remember I explained about that to you?”
Sky blushed and nodded her head. Then leaning closer to the frame she whispered.
“But I want you all to like him, Rowena. He’s important to me.”
Rowena laughed again. “Do not blame Sal for his animosity, Sky. He will always care about his Slytherin’s. But you are special to him, to all of us. He just feels protective of you. He loves you like a daughter, as do the rest of us. But tell me, why have you called us?”
“I’m moving to Hogwarts, to stay with Severus. But the Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, he wants to come here and look at the house. But He wants to meet all of you too. I didn’t want to say yes or no until I asked you all.”
Helga and Godric appeared at that time and Severus looked at them all in awe now. He could not believe he was in the presence of Hogwarts Founders. The fact that they were only portraits made no difference. Even the Headmaster’s office did not have portraits of the Founders.
Sky made the introductions and Severus bowed politely to each as they greeted him.
Severus also blushed profusely when Helga gave him a lecture about his treatment of Sky. Godric grinned through it all, enjoying the look of discomfort on the Slytherin’s face. This in turn caused Salazar to bristle and begin defending Severus to his three counterparts. Sky looked on helplessly as the four founders argued for the first time in her presence.
Severus saw her discomfort, pulled her to him and held her close, her back against his chest. He wrapped his arms around her protectively and rested his chin gently on her head as the Founders’ voices rose.
“Perhaps you would prefer to wait in our rooms at Hogwarts for a while. I shall stay here until they have calmed down.”
“No Severus, I’ve never seen them like this before. They’ve always got on well together. I don’t understand why they’re arguing now.”
“Excuse me, perhaps it would be prudent to save your dispute for another time. You are upsetting my … Sky.”
Severus wasn’t sure how to refer to Sky. Girlfriend did not sound right, nor did intended, as he had not asked her to marry him. Though now he thought about it, he wondered what she would say if he did. Still, it was best to wait and see how things developed. If he was summoned by the Dark Lord, he did not wish to leave a widow behind in that case.
As he was musing, Severus did not notice that all four Founders were now silently looking at him and was slightly taken aback when he saw four pair of eyes staring in his direction.
Rowena spoke first. “I apologise Sky. It was not our intention to come here and squabble ridiculously like this. Professor Snape, the truth is we are concerned for Sky. Your treatment of her in the past has not been exemplary to say the least. I do hope that you do intend to revert to that treatment in the future.”
“No madam I do not. I intend to do everything in my power to make things up to her. I care very deeply for Sky and wish her no harm.”
“Of course you do my boy.” Sal put in. His attitude changed now.
“That is not what you have been saying since the dear girl arrived here Sal.” Helga admonished. “Why the sudden change of heart?”
“Because he is a Slytherin, Helga. He would not dare to tell me he cared for her if he did not, besides which Sky believes him. And she has more insight on the workings of his mind then any of us.”
“He’s right, Helga. Sky has spent a lot of time delving into his mind. She should know.”
Sky went a very deep shade of red at Godric’s words and couldn’t look Severus in the eye when he turned her to face him.
“Is it true? What he said just now?”
She nodded. Severus did not know whether to be angry or flattered, so decided to leave it for now; another item to add to his mental list of things to be discussed when they were alone. He turned back to the Founders. I assure you my feelings for Sky are genuine. And since I am certain that she would soon let you know if they were not it is just as well. But the reason you are here is because the Headmaster would like a chance to speak with you. Are you agreeable to that?”
The four looked at each other for a moment then turned back to face the couple. In turn each of them, Sal, Rowena, Helga and Godric all nodded their assent.
“As to allowing him to enter this place, that is Sky’s decision. We can enter Hogwarts and speak with your Headmaster if she prefers.”
“Thanks Sal. All of you. But I know Severus would like him to see the house. So I’m agreeable if you are.”
“As you wish my dear. You may bring him this evening, that will give you time to settle into Hogwarts. And remember Sky, not one single part of Hogwarts is closed to you. We shall see you tonight.”
Once Sal finished speaking, the portraits stilled and faded away.
“Shall we go?” Sky still couldn’t quite bring herself to make eye contact with Severus.
“Not until you look at me. We shall have no secrets between us Sky. It is not a good basis for a relationship. What is done cannot be undone.”
He tilted her chin so her eyes met his.
“Never be afraid to look at me Sky. Even if I am angry, you have nothing to fear from me.”
“So you’re not mad? About me snooping I mean.”
“I shall not pretend to be pleased about it. But it was a very Slytherin act so I cannot say I would not have done the same, under the circumstances.”
She smiled. She knew damn well he would have done the same thing.
“Come on, lets have a look at these rooms you’ve had rearranged.”
Sky pulled open the door and waited for Severus to join her before entering.
“Your things? Do you not wish to take them with us?”
She grinned and her eyes drifted to a spot just behind him. When he turned, he saw a neat row of trunks and boxes hovering, waiting to follow them through the door. Severus turned back to her, one eyebrow raised.
“Show off.” He hissed, but the corners of his lips were twitching as he spoke.
Taking her hand, they stepped into his quarters, now their quarters.
Sky felt strange, even though she’d come here many times to heal him or talk with him she was now here to stay. This was to be her home.
She stood in the middle of the study as her belongings followed Severus through the door and it closed.
“Sky. This is as much your home now as it is mine. I do not want you to feel uncomfortable here. Start unpacking your things, you know where the bedroom is. I shall take your equipment to the lab and put it away for you.
Sky walked into the bedroom. It had been enlarged and an additional wardrobe, dresser and chest of drawers added. Over near the fireplace, there was a larch squashy couch and two armchairs, a coffee table and a couple of small side tables. With a snap of her fingers, her clothing was busy putting itself away. She spied the bed and sat on the side, bouncing up and down a few times to see how springy it was. The she turned red and jumped off, heading for the bathroom. It still looked the same but there were now two sinks instead of one. There was also extra shelving for her toiletries. Again she snapped her fingers and the job was done.
She went to find Severus.
She walked through the study and noticed it too was altered. Near the door to the dungeon corridor, there was a divider screen and when she looked behind it she found a desk and chair, parchments, quills and ink. Sky headed for Severus’ lab. He wasn’t there, but she could hear him and noticed another door, slightly ajar, just past where her little cupboard room had been.
“Severus where are you?”
“Through here. In your laboratory.”
She followed his voice and was amazed to see an exact replica of his own lab.
“Wow. Is this for me?”
“It is. I am about to put away your potions ingredients. Are you not going to unpack your belongings?”
“I’ve done it.”
“Already? That was quick. Very well. You can help me sort out this lot. Did you notice the desk I had brought in for you in my study?”
She nodded, smiled and gave him a peck on the cheek.
“Is that all a desk is worth. It is a very nice desk you know.”
“Later.” She grinned. “Now, what have we got to do here?”
“You have ingredients and potions here that were believed not to exist any more. They need to be secure. Then everything must be stored in alphabetical order. The most potent potions are to be …”
Sky snapped her fingers and Severus stood back dazed as every potion, ingredient and phial rocketed to the shelves and placed themselves in order. The more dangerous items securing themselves in a disillusioned cabinet at the top corner of the storeroom.
“Dammit woman are you trying to get us killed? Did Salazar not tell you that many potions react badly to magic?”
“Of course he did. But that’s your magic, not mine.”
“What do you mean by that?” he demanded as he followed her out of the store cupboard. He was still shocked and a bit shaken at the thought she could have blown them to smithereens.
“Can I put my books with yours?”
“Yes, of course you can.” he told her distractedly as she snapped her fingers again and her books slid themselves neatly in amongst his own. “But what did you mean back there? How is your magic different to mine?” “And when did you learn wandless magic?”
He pulled her over to the couch and they sat down.
