Apolina: Shame on you girl. Lol. Funnily enough I was teaching that one to my grandson a few weeks ago. It was hilarious to say the least.
Vamp: She wont be telling all yet, just a bit of Romany tradition.
Chapter 19
Severus was appalled when she literally wrung it’s neck without turning a hair, even then the bird continued to flap it’s wings uselessly for a while as they head back to the field full of rabbits.
He pulled a face at what he deemed her callousness, then thought more about it. ‘She has probably been doing this kind of thing her whole life, who am I to criticize? Especially after some of the more macabre things I have been forced to do against humanity.’
“Better food for our bellies that a human life wasted Severus.” Paula said as though reading his thoughts. “Romany mull (kill) only for food or chop (exchange) for goods, we do not wage war against the innocent.”
He glimpsed out the corner of his eyes. “Are you somehow performing legillimens on me?”
“No Severus, but your soul is open at the moment.”
“My soul? You mean you are reading me?” He asked, appalled.
“I read you the first time I met you, the night I arrived.”
Severus’ countenance turned black. “How dare you.” He growled. “Who gave you permission to look into my soul. Not I, that is for certain. You had no right to … “
“I have already told you it is what I do Severus, why I am here. It is no good getting all high and mighty about it.”
“You told me you were here to help the students, you did not ask to search into my soul, my personal … whatever.” He said, trying not to let his anger boil to the surface.
“What I said Severus, was that I am here to help those who’s souls are troubled. Yours is, more so than most, you hide from the fact but it is so. I was unable to prevent myself from reading you, your soul is too deeply ingrained with the turmoil that has taken you down a long dark drom. Drom is road. You are not beyond repair however.” She added with a tender smile.
Severus felt very uncomfortable now. The idea that she could feel his innermost thoughts and feelings was disturbing to say the least.
“I cannot read your mind Severus, I do not know what you are thinking from one moment to the next. It does not work like that, it is not like legillimens. It is hard to explain, it is so much more than empathic, so close and so far from divination, yet to me is it as natural as breathing. Please do not resent me for it, that would be akin to me resenting you for doing magic.” Her voice was soft, soothing, it calmed him even though he did not want to be calmed.
“Then I will not resent you, that does not mean I have to like what you are doing.” He said a bit testily. “I believe we have caught a shoshi.” He pointed to the trap they set earlier. “Ugh, it is still alive.”
“Shoshoi.” She chuckled. “And not for long.”
Paula upped her pace, tshurii in hand as she reached the struggling rabbit and crouched down.
Severus winced again as she drew the knife smoothly down it’s underbelly then proceeded to skin and gut it, he watched as she expertly cleaned it, threw the waste products into the edge of the field and held her prize up for him to see.
“I am not sure I have much of an appetite now.” He grumbled.
Paula laughed. “When you smell the food cooking, you will want to eat.
Then she did something he found very strange. She laid the two dead creatures side by side in the grass and stood, arms held high and her face to the heavens. “I give thanks for the kushti mas.”
“What did you just do”
“Posta. When you take from nature, you must give thanks to the Gods for their bounty. If not, you bring bibaxt, bad luck, and the Gods will not provide another time. Lets be jilling, light a yog and cook the muller’d.”
Severus narrowed his eyes at her. He knew she was speaking Romane just to bamboozle him. “Yog, fire right? Muller’d, animals. Jilling must be moving or walking.” He told her smugly.
“Very close. Yog was right, muller’d is dead or killed, jilling means going. You find some wood and light the yog.”
“Will you stop giving me orders woman. Why can’t you get the wood and light the blasted … yog?”
“Fine, you skin and gut the pheasant then.” Paula held out the bird, blood dripping from its beak.
With a look of distaste, Severus apparated onto the shore to search for driftwood. “Bloody bossy, know-it all-Gypsy.” He grumbled, accioing a log from further up the narrow beach. It only took ten minutes to find enough wood for a fire and Severus apparated back to the hearse, used his wand to dry out the wood and lit the fire.
Paula meanwhile had prepared the pheasant, washing it and the rabbit in a bowl of water.
He had no idea where the water came from and did not ask.
Once the fire was burning well, Paula stuck both animals with a branch and set them to hover over the fire. She then apparated herself down to the beach, stripped of her clothes and waded into the sea.
“Absolutely insane.” Severus said to himself when he looked down and saw what she was doing. “Naked in the middle of nowhere, bathing in a freezing cold sea and not caring a fig that I can see every part of that delectable … oh bloody hell.” He looked town at his trousers, they were tented again. With a scowl, he turned away from the view and busied himself with pulling the blanket, various containers, and drinks from the hearse.
By the time Paula returned, clad only in her bra and knickers as she moved to the rear of the hearse to collect clean clothes, Severus had laid out the food, opened the wine and was propped on one elbow staring at the sky.
“”I truly believe you are insane, do you know why?”
Paula flopped onto the blanket beside him. “Because you cannot fathom me out. You have yet to understand me Severus, my habits, my customs and beliefs. Just because I do certain things differently to you, you find me strange, abnormal.”
Severus sat up and glared at her. “Wrong. Because you bathe stark naked in a freezing cold sea, not caring that your body is on full view to me, tempting me, yet you turn away from a kiss.”
“Down there I was simply bathing, whether or not you chose to watch is your choice Severus. There is nowhere else available for me to wash at the moment and I was covered in blood. As for the kiss, I wanted it too much, that is why I turned away.”
As she stood and moved to the fire, testing the meat and summoning a large platter to put it on, Severus opened the containers of salad and fruit. He topped up his glass and poured one for Paula.
Sitting down, she ripped a leg from the pheasant and put it on her plate, added salad and fruit and a bread roll and took a deep drink of her wine. She talked while she ate, Severus loading his own plate and eating as he listened.
“In Romany culture, a man only kisses the girl he is betrothed to. Even then the girl is pulled away by her parents, the couple separated until the wedding. Purity is important in Romany culture. If a woman is not virginal at Romipen … marriage, she is considered dirty, unclean. When a rom, husband, beds his manushi, wife, for the first time, the blooded sheets of her breeched maidenhead must be presented to the parents of her rom as proof of her purity. If there is no blood, the girl is considered unclean and beaten before being sent back to her parents. Then the Romipen is considered void. That means bad blood between the families, even a brawl if the union was between different tribes. I have no elders to protect me so I must protect myself. A kiss can lead to much more when the couple are deeply attracted to one another. That is why I turned from you.”
