The Yule Ball went well. Lucius disguised himself also and the two put on their best.
The doors to the Great Hall opened at eight. The long tables had been replaced by much smaller ones. James and Lucius took their places at the staff table, while Harry and his date sat at the champion’s table.
Instead of the usual spread, there was a menu by each plate and everyone had to give their order to the plates. When dinner was finished the tables were moved over to stand along the walls. The champions all came out to start the first dance. Harry looked extremely nervous, which James thought was cute.
Lucius looked over at Draco and his date Pansy Parkinson. The blonde boy looked even more miserable than he had before after lunch. “I don’t know if I can watch much more of this,” Lucius whispered to James.
When James looked back at him questioningly he motioned to Draco. “I hate to see my son so unhappy.”
James sighed. “I don’t know what to tell you. There’s no easy way out.”
Soon everyone was out on the dance floor having fun; except for Ron and Harry. They spent most of the night sitting at one of the tables by the wall. Toward the end of the evening they went outside for a walk.
A few days later when classes started up again there was an article by Rita Skeeter in the Daily Prophet about Hagrid being half giant. No one knew how she’d found out, but it was devastating to Hagrid. He refused to come out of his cabin.
Everyone left him alone for a while, but on the next Hogsmeade weekend, Dumbledore and James went to see him. They hadn’t been there long when Harry, Ron, and Hermione came pounding on the door.
“This is proof of what I’ve been trying to tell you,” Dumbledore pointed out as he let them in. “They wanted to see you so badly they tried to break down your door.”
James nodded in agreement. “Those of us who remember you from school know better than to believe what that stupid bitch wrote.”
“You remind me of someone,” Hagrid said suddenly as he looked up at James.
“Oh? Who?”
“I can’t put my finger on it.”
James considered telling Hagrid who he really was, but quickly decided against it. Hagrid meant well, but was notoriously bad at keeping secrets.
“Well, I must be off,” Dumbledore said as he stood. “I refuse to accept your resignation Hagrid. As long as I’ve been Headmaster there have always been a few people upset about something. I expect to see you at breakfast in the morning.”
James got up to leave with Dumbledore. He put his hand on Hermione’s shoulder. “I know what you’re thinking, but leave this to the big boys.”

Much later that evening James was out for a midnight stroll when he heard a loud screeching noise. Naturally he ran to investigate. He found Filch and Severus standing at the bottom of a staircase, Filch was holding one of the golden eggs, and Severus was saying something about his store room having been broken into.
“Something wrong?” James asked as he moved closer. He glanced up at the dark stair case and knew Harry was up there. He must have dropped the egg.
“Yes something’s wrong,” Severus sneered. “Someone broke into my stores again.”
“As much of a tragedy as that is, how did that egg get down here?”
“Peeves,” Filch grumbled. “I’ve got him now.”
James couldn’t resist rolling his eyes. Things hadn’t changed much since he’d been in school. “Well that belongs to the champion it was taken from, so why don’t you just give it to me and I’ll return it to its owner.”
“But it’s my evidence! I…”
“Give it,” James repeated in a stern tone and glared at the squib. Filch grumbled, but reluctantly handed over the egg. “Thank you. You can still go to Dumbledore in the morning if you really think it’s that important.”
It was then that Severus noticed a piece of paper lying on the stairs. “What’s this?” he asked bending over to pick it up.
James had a feeling he knew what it was so he snatched it quickly. “Oh, that’s mine. I must’ve dropped it.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. “I don’t recall you coming down the stairs.”
“I… well… this is a drafty castle. It must’ve blown up there.”
“Of course…” Severus crossed his arms.
James noticed Severus staring awfully hard at the paper with a hint of recognition showing on his face. Thinking fast James stepped toward Severus and pinned him against the wall, their bodies touching. “Now why would I lie to you?”
“I can think of several reasons,” Severus answered smugly.
James faked a hurt look. “And here I was walking around all wide awake and lonely, thinking about coming to see you.”
Severus opened his mouth to say something and James reached and pulled him into a kiss. He didn’t let go until he felt something start to press against his upper thigh. When he let go Severus stumbled a little. “What… what were we talking about?” Severus asked with a dazed expression.
James lightly caressed his cheek. “We were talking about you going back to your room and waiting for me.”
“But weren’t we….”
“No sweets, you’re confused. Just go back like a good little pet and I’ll be along in a few.”
Severus nodded and wandered away, wondering what had just happened. Filch left as well, leaving James to deal with Harry.
“I know it’s a bit late for me to start parenting now, but what were you doing out here in the middle of the night with that egg?” James asked as he pulled the cloak off of Harry.
Harry stared up at his father, one leg buried deep in the trick step. “I… could you help me?”
James set the egg down and lifted Harry up to free him from the trick step. “So, did you think the egg needed a walk?”
“No,” Harry sighed. “I was taking a suggestion from Cedric. Have you ever been in the Prefects’ bathroom on the fifth floor?”
“I’ve been in lots of places,” James said as he and Harry walked. “So what was the suggestion?”
“He said to take a bath with the egg and gave me the password to the Prefects’ bathroom.”
“And?”
“Well, at first I didn’t know what to do, but Moaning Myrtle was spying on me and told me.”
James chuckled. “She likes to do that, though she’s never shown herself before as far as I know.”
“Yeah, that’s what she said. I put it under the water like she told me and instead of screeching I heard singing. It was a riddle.”
“Did you figure it out?”
Harry nodded. “I think so.”
“Good,” James smiled. “But that doesn’t explain why you were on the first floor.”
“Oh, I… well, I saw something on the map,” Harry confessed. “Something strange.”
“What was it?” James asked, feeling a little lump in his throat.
“I saw who broke into Snape’s stores. It was Barty Crouch.”
James stopped suddenly. “Are you sure?”
Harry nodded. “It didn’t make any sense. He’s been saying he’s sick and not going to work, but is running around the castle in the middle of the night according to the map.”
“Very strange,” James mumbled as he continued to walk with Harry. He was so lost in thought in thought he hardly noticed when they came to the portrait of the Fat Lady.
“You’re not really going to go back and see Snape are you?” Harry asked.
James shrugged. “Don’t worry about it Harry.”
“How could you… kiss him like that?” Harry’s face scrunched up in disgust.
“It worked didn’t it? You didn’t get in trouble.”
James hugged Harry before they woke the Fat Lady and Harry went to bed. Then James turned and headed back down to the dungeons.

A/N: Thanks for all the feedback. I do listen. I think there may be a little action between James and Snape and Sirius, but I want to keep it mostly James/Lucius. There have been several comments about James not spending enough time with Harry or not being a good father. I tried to fix that a little, but part of that is the character. He’s emotionally stunted and sex is all he knows; like the way he seduced Snape in this chapter.
