When Dumbledore, Serena and Remus stepped from the fire, they immediately sat down.
Dumbledore ordered tea for the three of them. Serena took the tea cup politely and changed the tea to apple cider. She and her father were going to have to have a talk about her beverage preferences.
“Shall we begin?” Dumbledore asked setting his cup down on the table.
Serena and Remus nodded their heads in consent.
“What I would like to know is how you came to be a werewolf in the first place and how we were ignorant of it during the month you stayed in England,” he asked looking at Serena with a fatherly scowl.
“It was quite a simple accident really—during Mardi Gras while living in New Orleans, I ran off with some of the other children into the Bayou. While we were catching fire flies and swinging on some of the vines of the trees, we decided to play hide and seek. Unbeknownst to us, there was a man who lived in the swamps who never took his wolfsbane potion, which is illegal in the States,”
Remus had a grim look on his face. He didn’t like where the story was heading.
“I went hiding in one of the trunks of the trees when I heard a growling behind me. I thought one of the kids were trying to scare me so I giggled and stayed in my hiding place. Moments later, the werewolf jumped from the shadows and bit me on the inside of my thigh. The cut was so deep that I was gushing blood at an alarming rate. The wolf would have killed me if it weren’t for a witch, whom the muggles called a voodoo priestess, who fought him until he cowered away into the night. It took her a week to heal me before I could return to my mother. After I came back and my mother found out what happened to me, we packed our bags and migrated to California where the rest of my extended family lived. She said New Orleans simply held too many sad memories for her,”
Dumbledore looked away from Serena and stared into the fire. It seemed he knew why the memories were so sad for Serena’s mother.
“What happened with the government? Did they place restrictions on you?” Remus asked.
“They just registered me and made sure I got my wolfsbane potion once a month. There are laws in place to protect me in a job or just in regular life in general. They aren’t perfect, but I don’t have to hide who I am,”
Remus stared at her in disbelief and for once, his werewolf decided to stay quiet.
“How did we miss your transformation last month?” Dumbledore asked quietly.
Serena turned back to him with a weak smile.
“It was pretty simple really. Remus wasn’t there because he was transforming himself and since Sirius and Hermione can’t be in the same room together without making out or jumping each other’s bones, I simply took my potion, locked myself in the room for the night and stared out the window,”
Dumbledore took of his glasses and rubbed his eyes with his hands. He let out a sigh and stared at the ground, his mind too tired to take in everything at once.
The war was coasting him more of his own life than he realized and his daughter was one of the things he lost
“The answer is fairly straight forward to me—you will not be mating with him. Since Remus seems to be having trouble controlling his urges, you will no longer be staying at Grimmauld Place,” Dumbledore said looking pointedly at Remus.
The human side of Remus was relieved. Being around her scent constantly was driving him mad with desire. He would be able to sleep on in a warm bed rather than on an uncomfortable couch.
The werewolf side of Remus was livid. How dare the man deny the only mate who had ever offered herself to him in his short life?
“Therefore,” Dumbledore continued, unaware of Remus’ animal thoughts, “We will put you back in the same room you stayed in before you left Hogwarts at the beginning of December. I would like for you to report to me first thing in the morning after breakfast,”
Serena’s face flushed with anger, her pretty bronzed skin glowing and crackling with magic.
“Who are you to tell me that I can’t mate with Remus? If you haven’t realized by now I’m an adult in both the magical world and the muggle world. If I decide that I want Remus to be my mate he will be my mate damnit!”
Dumbledore jumped with surprising quickness for his age, pinning at Serena with his own glare.
“Your mother sent you here for me to take care of. I take that role very seriously. If I tell you will not be mating with Remus then you won’t,”
“If I am old enough to support myself like an adult than I am one,”
“You may be able to support yourself but you sure as hell can’t protect yourself. You are under my protection and if I say you cannot mate with Remus, you can’t. We are done with this conversation,” Dumbledore hissed.
Remus watched from his chair fascinated with the whole play. He had never seen Dumbledore so out of control. Nor did he think he ever heard the twinkling man hiss.
Serena crossed her arms, defiantly—fixing her lips to say more.
Dumbledore didn’t give her a chance to throw another smart comment at him.
“Dobby!” he bellowed.
Dobby popped into the office. Although the elf was no longer afraid of human anger, he was curious to know why the Headmaster was so angry. In fact, for both Dobby and Remus, it was the first time they had ever seen the older gentleman so dark.
“Would you please lead Miss Adams to her room?” he asked, doing his best not to snap at the elf.
“Of course sir,” the little elf squeaked.
Serena’s expression became even darker.
“I don’t want to stay here. I want to go back to Grimmauld Place,”
Serena actually didn’t actually want to go back but she would damned if she let him boss her around without putting up a fight. She couldn’t believe he was being so difficult. Remus needed her and he wouldn’t see reason and let her help him!
Dumbledore glared at her, fuming silently in his spot for a few moments before he was able to speak.
“You will go to your room of your own free will or I will make you go,”
Even Serena knew when she pushed too far. She decided not to argue that particular point anymore but it didn’t mean she wouldn’t make things more difficult for him before she left the room.
She knew it was childish and that it probably wasn’t the best way to act to get the man to treat her like an equal but she was too angry to stop herself.
“I don’t need an elf to help me to my rooms. I can find my own way,”
Dumbledore pinched the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger. He looked as if he were slowly counting to ten. He began to speak again, his brittle patience coloring his speech.
“Be that as it may, Hogwarts is a very large castle with staircases that love to lead new comers astray. I would be more comfortable with you having an escort to your room,”
Serena looked as if she were going to retort but paused. She was tired as hell and she didn’t have the energy to argue her point with him any longer. She ran her slender fingers through her hair in frustration.
“Look, I’m too tried to argue with you anymore. But this conversation isn’t over. I don’t need your permission to help Remus out and if I feel that in my heart that it’s the right thing to do, there’s nothing you can do to stop me,”
Serena turned sharply to Dobby and frowned at him with resentment.
“Well, what are you waiting for? I’m ready,” Serena barked.
Dobby grinned widely at Serena as if she hadn’t tried to blow his ear off with her voice.
“Of course Miss! This way please,”
Dumbledore watched with weary eyes as Serena left the room. She barely managed to mask the irritated expression on her face.
Merlin he didn’t realize being a parent was so bloody hard! One would think that a man who could handle children from the ages of 11 to 17 at a school for nine months out of a year would be able to handle his own child.
It seemed it wasn’t so easy to manipulate your own child. Especially when said child had a personality so similar to oneself!
Dumbledore turned to face Remus, to weary to hold up the sinister glower any longer.
“We’ll talk about this tomorrow morning. Until then Remus,” Dumbledore said as a way of dismissing the werewolf.
Remus was a little insulted at the dismissal but disappeared through the floo nonetheless. Maybe after Dumbledore slept on it, he would be able to convince the man that claiming Serena was for the best.
When Remus was gone, Dumbledore let out one more sigh before walking back over to his fireplace and calling Ginny Weasley.
---
One night later, Ginny sat in her and Hermione’s bedroom at Grimmauld place holding a pillow to her chest.
It was nights like that night where Ginny wished Hermione was there to listen to keep her company. But the bushy haired girl went to her parent’s house to drop the bomb about her relationship with Sirius. Knowing how protective the Grangers could be, Ginny knew Hermione wasn’t going to come back for the rest of the holidays—like it mattered anyway with only one day left.
Ginny was desperate for female companionship. She even wished Serena was there with her. But, after talking to a friendly painting in the Black library, it heard through the portrait grape vine that Dumbledore refused to let Serena go anywhere near Remus. It was rumored that the poor old man was working late into the night to find another way to get Remus to be the leader of every wolf pack in Great Britain.
Ginny shook her head, remembering the meeting she had with Dumbledore after the cold hour she spent in Snape’s private quarters.
Even though the twinkling man looked very tired, he still had enough patience to gently get the story of her initiation night out of her.
The old man was puzzled about why Voldemort replaced his mistress after twenty years of service. Ginny suggested that it may have had something to do with her holding his diary when she was younger.
He conceded the point but nonetheless told her to be very cautious around Voldemort. He could manipulate well enough to get hundreds of followers to do what he said even though he tortured them. Ginny shuddered at the thought.
Ginny stood, unable to stay sitting in her bed any longer. Her back was killing her and her stomach was poking out to an uncomfortable degree. There was no doubt that when she got back to school, the gossip would spread around faster than a snitch at a Quidditch game.
She was expecting Voldemort to be calling on her very soon. She felt as if she were being thrown to the hounds to be torn into little shreds only to be resurrected from bits and pieces of flesh to be torn apart again.
She wished Lucius were there at least, but the pureblood had to go home, minutes after she arrived back at Grimmauld place to do some Dark Lord business.
Ginny let out a frustrated sigh and began to pace. Her family was gone, Sirius was sulking in a corner and Remus was reading in the library. Ginny was bored out of her mind. She should have taken up her father’s offer and gone back to the Burrow with everyone. Dealing with the twins was a hell of a lot more entertaining than watching her bedroom floor.
The anticipation was killing her. If he didn’t call her soon she was going to tear her hair out in frustration.
Unexpectedly, an agonizing burn shot up her arm where her Dark Mark laid. Maybe she spoke to soon.
