AN: I don’t care what anyone says I LOVE Bellatrix Lestrange! >.< She is undoubtedly the best female bad-guy in existence! She’s as nutty as Squirrel Poo and such a sadist! :p Anyways, please enjoy this next chappy! I would just like to point out my reasons for why Sirius Black is learning the Dark Arts, he is not only a child and is probably curious about it, but in canon he is made out to be more than a little unstable, I just think he would be the type to fight fire with fire...
Chapter Nineteen: Toujours Pur (Always Pure)
The door bell rang, Sirius could hear it from his bedroom as he stood before the mirror. He gazed at his reflection and sighed.
“You look good, Siri.”
He turned to the little mirror propped up against the wall on his desk. “Thanks, but I...I don’t want to do this.”
“There’s no choice. Remember, whatever happens I’ll never leave your side.”
Sirius smiled and strode over to the mirror. “I know, thank you James.”
“Will you tell me how it went?”
Sirius nodded before he heard his mother calling him. “I’ll talk to you later.” He said and watched James nod before the mirror returned to reflecting his pale face. He sighed and put it back before straightening out his emerald green robes, picked out by his mother and turning to the door.
Sirius paused before the door to the drawing room where he could hear the soft drone of voices, he pushed the door open and peered inside. He could see several people sat with their backs to him, he could clearly see his Aunt Lucretia’s dark brown hair because she usually wore it piled carelessly atop her head, beside her was a short, slender girl with the same brown hair but with streaks of vibrant red running through it. He assumed that that was his fiancé. He took a breath and entered the room.
“Ah! Sirius, there you are.” Walburga looked her son over with pursed lips before nodding when she deemed him satisfactory, she stood and swept over to him and ushered him over so he was stood before the two women. “Lyra, you haven’t seen him since he was a baby but this is my eldest son, Sirius.”
Sirius bowed gracefully. “It’s nice to finally meet you cousin.” He said and took the moment to look at her, he realised that his mother hadn’t done her justice. She was beautiful. Her long hair caught the sunlight so the red tints seemed to turn to fire as she moved her head, her lips were full and ever so slightly pouty but it was her eyes that were her most striking part. They were deep brown, so dark they were nearly black, her eyelashes were thick and long and her eyes slanted ever so slightly at the edges giving her an almost exotic appearance. She wore a white dress made of some kind of floaty material that flared around her ankles as she dipped into a small curtsy.
“It’s nice to meet you properly, Sirius. I hope you find me to your liking.”
“I...I’m sure it won’t be a problem.” Sirius mumbled as his mother sat him down and forced tea into his hands.
“Walburga, dear, this is wonderful tea. I must congratulate you on your choice in House Elves.” Lucretia said softly, Sirius eyed her through his fringe for a moment, holding his tea cup and sipping it. She was a stern women with a thin face and she greatly resembled her brother Orion.
Walburga smiled pleasantly. “Kreacher has been in my side of the family for a long time.” She said.
The two older women began to talk of things Sirius found boring, he let his gaze wander as he drank his tea. They landed on the piano and he stared at it, his fingers itched slightly as he longed to go over and play it. “Do you play?” He turned his head and saw Lyra watching him through her carefully arranged fringe. He thought he detected a faint foreign twang to her accent.
“Sirius plays beautifully, unfortunately not as often as one would wish.” Walburga answered for him, he looked down into his cup.
“I think I would like to hear something.” Lucretia said eyeing her Nephew. “Orion never mentioned he learnt to play...our father used to sit at his piano for hours, he was found dead before it. A weak heart apparently.”
Walburga nudged Sirius in the side. “Play something for us, dear.”
With a suppressed sigh Sirius moved to the piano and sat down. He put his fingers to the keys and began to play Chopin’s Nocturne in C# minor, he let his eyes close and sank into the music because his mother’s gaze made him uncomfortable. The gentle, soothing notes lifted into the air, silencing everything else, he moved carefully through the music his mind absorbed until nothing else mattered. It was a slightly Melencholy tune, slow and melodic and suited Sirius’ mood perfectly.
Finally he ended the song and opened his eyes, his mother nodded approvingly while Lyra’s eyes lit up. “That was lovely!” She exclaimed happily, Sirius smiled in response.
“He is indeed very talented, who taught him? I doubt it was my brother, he has never been one for music.” Lucretia intoned in a soft voice.
“It was my brother, Alphard.” Walburga said stiffly. “They have always been close, he has been teaching him since he was able to walk.”
“He has done an excellent job. How is Alphard, I haven’t seen the boy since your wedding.”
Walburga sighed. “He travels quite often, hardly ever stays in one place for an extended period...”
“And he’s not married?”
Sirius watched his mother’s mouth tighten. “No. He has refused every eligible bachelorette who has dared offer her hand. No matter how many times I say to him that it is high past time he settled down he insists he will after he has seen the world, I despair at times...”
“Ah, we all have someone who defies tradition in the family. I daresay he will come around soon enough, he will become too old to travel great distances and then he will see the error of his ways. Don’t despair so.”
“I hope so, Lucretia, I really do..”
“Oncle Alphard is a nice man.” Sirius said softly from where he still sat at the piano, Walburga looked at him sharply. “He’s always bringing me presents and he tells the most fascinating stories!” His grey eyes sparkled with excitement as he sat perched on the edge of his chair. “He has met so many wonderful people, old Warlocks from Timbuktu and an ancient Seer from East Asia! He gave me this coin that was enchanted by a guy in Africa to tell the time, it’s really old too, it was around long before Muggle’s invented clocks! He also gave me this pretty little bird, it’s carved entirely of jade and pure silver, it moves on its own and sings as well! I’ve also got-...”
“Enough, Sirius.” Walburga said sharply, he looked at her and saw how angry she looked. He frowned in confusion.
“He sounds very interesting. In Durmstrang we don’t have much knowledge of the world and I would like to learn more of it.” Lyra said with a smile in Sirius’ direction. “Your Uncle seems to love you very much.”
Sirius grinned. “He does, he says so all the time.”
“Sirius!” Walburga snapped and again Sirius gazed at her in confusion. “Would anyone care for some cake? Kreacher makes a divine Victoria Sponge...”
With the distraction of the cake Sirius managed to take a moment to ponder his mother’s odd reaction to all his talk about his uncle, but he simply couldn’t work out why he was suddenly such a touchy topic in the house.
A little later Walburga and Lucretia left Sirius and Lyra alone, Sirius felt a little uncomfortable but he managed to hide it. “How old are you now Sirius?” Lyra asked as she sipped another cup of tea.
“Fourteen, I’ll be fifteen this November...what about you?”
“Seventeen...we stay at Durmstrang until we turn eighteen...it’s not like Hogwarts.” She put her cup back on its saucer. “I know it must be strange for you, not being able to choose who you marry...”
Sirius shrugged and sagged in his seat. “I’ve known since I was old enough to know what Marriage was that I’d never get a choice...My parents tell me I’m too wilful...” He scoffed.
Lyra smiled. “Your escapades are the talk of the family.” She said slowly. “Is it true you’re friends with the Bloodtraitor Potter?”
Sirius gazed at her carefully. “Yes.”
Lyra sighed and looked out the window. “I will expect you to cut off that relationship when we sign our marriage contract, its binding for life as you know and I really don’t want to risk tainting our family before it’s even begun.”
Sirius’ face fell and he straightened his back, a look of haughty irritation adorned his features. “And what if I don’t?”
Lyra laughed, it was a musical sound that Sirius was sure that if he was straight he would have found attractive. “If you don’t abandon your friends then I’m sure the family could change your mind for you. What would you rather have; a gorgeous attentive wife or a couple of friends?” She smirked nastily. “I can make your life heaven or hell Sirius, the choice is yours. either way, we’re stuck with each other.”
That night Sirius went to bed in a black mood, when he finally fell asleep he dreamt people were laughing at him.

Lestrange’s Manor was cold and uninviting, its walls painted in dark paint and cobwebs hung from the ceiling and ornate chandeliers. Sirius hardly paid any attention to anything except his feet as he was led into the large reception room by an ancient old house elf with torn ears and gnarled fingers, as if they had been broken repeatedly. The elf announced him in a high, quaking voice and Sirius looked up to see a massive fireplace made of black marble and carved into the likeness of serpents. Sat in a wingback leather chair was Bellatrix. “Come in Sirius.” She said softly, smiling as Sirius reluctantly moved closer, her dark insolent eyes looked him up and down. “What a handsome boy you turned into, isn’t that right dear?”
Rodolphus Lestrange smiled somewhat grimly down at Sirius, he was a thick-set man who had a disturbing blankness to his eyes that made him look even more insane than Bella. “Indeed.” He said slowly, his eyes raking Sirius as if he was little more than a peice of meat.
“Now then, the Elf will take your things up to your room for you...before we allow you to get settled we must lay down a few ground rules.” Her smirk made Sirius fidget uncomfortably. “You must first be warned that we are in the middle of nowhere...”
“...No one to hear you scream.” Rodolphus said with unsuppressed glee in his voice.
“...Exactly. And while here we expect you to obey all orders, do you understand?”
Sirius nodded slowly. “Yes.” He said tightly.
Bella smiled, cocking her head to the side and eyeing him through her lashes. “Our most important rule, Siri, is that you must remember at all times what you are.”
Sirius frowned in confusion. “And what is that?” The blow was so unexpected, so sudden that Sirius cried out before he could stop himself. Rodolphus’ ham sized hand smacked him to the floor, he bit his tongue so blood filled his mouth. Furiously he wiped crimson from his chin. Bella was laughing, the sound chilling in the silence of the house.
“You are a Pureblood!” Rodolphus snarled, he grabbed the boy and hauled him roughly to his feet where he swayed slightly drunkenly. “What is your family motto?” Sirius couldn’t answer as stars were passing across his eyes, the slap had knocked all sense from him. Lestrange shook him, Sirius’ ears picked up on Bella’s insane laughter and he suddenly remembered...
“TOUJOURS PUR!” He shouted, his small, high voice filled the room and Rodolphus released him looking torn between satisfied and irritated.
“Always pure.” Bella purred from her chair, she drummed talon-like nails on the arm and Sirius noticed that she had painted them blood red. “Remember that Sirius...It will soon become the only thing of any real importance, even over your own family.”

That night Sirius waited for the mansion to grow quiet, when he thought it safe he got out of his huge bed and slipped to the windows. He gazed across acres of empty countryside but swallowed his fear. He had to escape. He began pulling on them, it took him a moment to realise that all they were doing was rattling in their casements. With an angry snarl he slammed his fist against them but only got a bruised hand for his trouble, he spun around gazing hopefully about the room but found nothing to aid in his escape. His wand lay on his side-table but, as much as he despised his cousins, he wasn’t about to think them stupid enough not to have magical enchantments scattering his bedroom. If he used magic they would know. “Shit.” He swore softly and sucked his knuckles absently as he walked towards the en-suite that led off his bedroom, he pushed open the door with one hand and gazed around. The room was simple and covered from ceiling to floor in gleaming black and white tiles, the claw-footed bath stood upon a slight dais at the end of the long room. It had a sink a toilet and a large, floor length mirror. There was no escape there either. With a sigh he closed the door and went back to his green covered bed, he climbed under the duvet and curled up in a tight little ball.

The next day before breakfast Sirius was forced to stand before a mirror and repeat his family motto, over and over again until it threatened to drive him insane. Bella watched with a knowing smirk on her face while her husband laughed. After breakfast Sirius was made to scrub floors, but without magic, he scrubbed the hall until his knees bled and he had blisters on his hands from the horrible, caustic chemicals he was using. All the while Rodolphus sneered and jeered, calling him degrading names while sometimes stamping on Sirius’ knuckles and, one time, even forcing his face to the floor with his foot. Sirius made not a sound. He carried out his chores and tried to ignore the sting of pain and humiliation in his face and body, he was not used to hard labour, his parents had never made him do the work of what he deemed worthy only of house elves and people too poor to have them.
He was allowed a meagre lunch before he was forced to recite his family motto for almost half an hour again. Bella smiled at him when his voice had grown hoarse. “Enough, now you’ve been very good today Siri, Bella is so proud of you.” She glided towards him and smoothed hair from his exhausted face. “Tonight we have an important guest arriving, we are to discuss some very serious matters...you will stay for this. I think it’s important you hear...however you will be sworn to secrecy.”
Sirius was too tired to resist when Bella put a curse on him, if he was to try to speak of the coming evening his tongue would glue itself to the roof of his mouth and choke him. Afterwards Bella made him go upstairs where he bathed and changed his clothes for soft black robes of the finest quality. He gazed at his reflection for a long time, he lifted a shaking hand and touched his face, the mirror was cool against his fingers. “Toujours Pur...” He whispered and closed his eyes. “Always pure...”
He got downstairs and saw his cousin standing by the reception room door, she smiled at him and beckoned him over. He saw something in her hand and when she brought it forth he saw a mask, it was moulded into the shape of a skull, Sirius automatically recoiled but she grabbed his arm in a vice-like grip. “Hush now ickle Siwi...afraid of the big scawy mask? Don’t be frightened, it’s for your protection as much as everyone else’s...come now, put it on.”
She forced the horrible thing over his face and turned him so he could see himself in a shiny suite of armour that adorned the entrance hall. “Look at yourself...if you would only let go of this ridiculous obsession with Bloodtraitor filth and accept your place by my side...by the Dark Lord’s side you could be so, so great...you know as well as I do how wrong your father is when he calls you a Squib. You’re powerful Sirius. You’re strong and the Dark Lord is always in need of strong followers.”
Sirius gazed at himself, almost hypnotised by her soft voice, it seemed to stir something within him...it would be so, so easy to reach out and grasp what she was offering and it didn’t surprise him at all how desperately he wanted it; Power. He needed to feel powerful again, just like he did at Hogwarts. He needed to feel strong. He needed it so badly his breath caught in his throat as Bella’s whispers brushed his ear. “You could be so great, you could be more powerful than most of the useless throw away trash that will come tonight, if you wished, you could be the Dark Lord’s most reliable and useful follower...except for me, of course. He needs someone inside Hogwarts, Sirius. He needs someone like you...”
Sirius reached up to touch the mask over his face, he could imagine the looks of fear in people’s eyes if they could see him. He imagined himself raised higher than anyone else in school and it sent a little thrill down his spine.
“You see? You want it. It is within your grasp, just reach out and take it!”
Sirius licked his lips, he could see the desperate hunger in his eyes as these images flitted through his head. “I...I want to be powerful.” He breathed and felt Bella laugh, she ran her fingers through his hair in an almost tender gesture.
“Good boy, I knew there was truly Slytherin blood in your veins.”
Sirius closed his eyes and saw James’ face, his smile. He heard his laughter and smiled softly to himself. “...I want power but the cost isn’t worth it...” He whispered and tore the mask from his face, it fell to the floor with a clatter. “I will never become a Death Eater, Bella.”
Bella simply smiled at him. “We shall see, little Siri.”
Sirius was forced to wear the mask for the meeting, he sat in the shadows and watched as Death Eaters gathered. Rodolphus kept a close eye on him, holding him in place with a huge hand. Sirius kept as still as possible to avoid bringing attention to himself, he watched as the Death Eaters stood around all talking to each other in hushed whispers.
It was half an hour before there was a general hush, the clock chimed from the mantle peice and all eyes turned to the double doors leading into the room. Bella shifted excitedly as the doors opened to reveal a tall figure in a dark hooded cloak, Sirius’ fingers clenched on the table he was sat on. He could feel the sheer power of the man walking up the aisle created by his follows, his stride was confident and purposeful but he never rushed. As he passed Sirius he turned his head and Sirius was almost certain he caught the gleam of crimson and flash of white from beneath his large hood. He shuddered as terror, the likes of which he had never felt before, shot through him.
“My Lord, it is good to see you.” Bella whispered, her voice carrying to the very back of the room.
“Bella, you look well.” Voldemort’s voice struck Sirius as very odd, it was high pitched and cold but it still made ice creep into his veins.
“May I take your cloak My Lord, you must have had a long journey.”
“No need for benign pleasantries, Bellatrix. I am here for a purpose, and seeing as we have acquired a...guest, I prefer to remain hidden.”
“Of course, My Lord.” Bella bowed sycophantically before turning and grabbing Sirius by the wrist and pulling him forward, she forced him to his knees before the Dark Lord. “This boy is my cousin, Sirius Black.”
“Black? Hmm...” Voldemort reached out of his long robes and extended a hand towards Sirius, his fingers were long and as white as virgin snow. He put one cold finger beneath Sirius’ chin and lifted his head up so their eyes met, with his other hand he removed his mask. “I can see the resemblance. You Black’s do have a way of producing some fascinating children.” He gazed into Sirius’ eyes and that was when Sirius saw that indeed Voldemorts eyes were as red as blood. “And why, may I ask, are you here tonight Sirius Black?”
Sirius couldn’t refuse to answer, that would have been suicide. “I’m here to witness this meeting...as punishment...Sir.”
“I see...and what crime have you committed young man?”
Sirius felt as if the whole world was watching him and he squirmed uncomfortably beneath the penetrative gaze of the Dark Lord. “I don’t want to marry my cousin.” He breathed, unable to avoid answering, somehow he was certain Voldemort would know if he lied or not.
“Why not?”
Sirius went perfectly still, his whole body going cold and numb as he desperately tried to work out a way to explain without giving away his darkest secret. “I...I...I’m...”
“You appear to have picked up a stutter, young Sirius.” There was a smattering of laughter. “Is there a problem with your cousin? Is she not comely enough? Or perhaps she is fat?” Sirius could hear the smirk in his voice.
“She’s beautiful but...I don’t know if she and I will be a good match, sir.” He said in a quavering voice.
“Not to worry, I am sure your parents have picked a most excellent bride for you, she is pureblood I assume?”
“Yes.” Sirius replied softly.
“Then there is no issue...I’m sure you will be fine once you have spent more time together.” He made as if to release Sirius but paused again and a small frown creased his brow. “You are much too young to join us at present Sirius, but perhaps when you are older...I sense a great deal of untapped potential within you, you have stores of power you have yet to learn to control and I also sense in you the ability to be ruthless, and brave...Yes, I appreciate Bravery...When you are sixteen come to me.” He released Sirius who sighed and lowered his head, he tried to calm his heart as it beat in terror against his ribcage.
“Thank you My Lord.” Bella whispered from where she knelt beside Sirius, her hands gripping his shoulders almost too tightly. He felt her breath on his ear. “Do you hear that, Siri? You will become one of us...when it is time.”
XXX
The Summer crawled past at the pace of a snail. Sirius continued to repeat the same dull routine, he would sit before the mirror and repeat his family motto until he could hardly speak, he would then clean and put up with Lestrange’s taunts.
One evening Bella came to him in his room, he sat on his bed and gazed forlornly at the mirror James had given him, the temptation to speak to his friend was almost overwhelming until the gentle tap of finger nails on his door made him turn to see his cousin. “Hello Sirius.” She said as she glided towards him, her smile full of false affection. She sat at his side and reached for his hair which she began plaiting almost absently. I received a note from the Dark Lord today, dearest cousin.” She said with barely contained excitement, each time she spoke of Voldemort Sirius could hear the soft loving caress in her voice and it made him almost ill. “He has asked me to give you the honour of learning the Dark Arts...”
Sirius’ eyes widened and he turned them on her. “What?”
“Oh yes, I will be teaching you the rudimentary basics of Dark Magic. Isn’t that fun?”
Sirius gaped at her. He wasn’t entirely sure how he felt about that, he had read books that explained some rather disturbing spells, but he doubted it would come close to what Bella was planning on teaching him.
“What do you say?”
Sirius knew the question had only one answer, what choice did he have? “Yes, of course I will learn.” He muttered and lowered his eyes. Bella giggled and racked her nails through his hair.
“Good boy.” She whispered.
