Chapter 19
Beta'd by the amazing Tenchi, who I couldn't work without anymore. Thanks, Tenchi!
Just a reminder of what's on my profile; reviews complaining or whinging about the lack 'o sex in stories will get deleted. If you want a smut-filled romp, you need to find another story to read.
“I think I have something here,” Draco said quietly to Lupin, who was seated next to him in the library as they searched for anything that might fit the description of the snake. “It doesn't fit all of it, but it does most. Like the color. It's turquoise. It also mentions that it has a blackened nose.”
Putting down what he was reading, Remus looked at the book the young man had open and read what he could. Nodding, he said, “We now have a name to work with. Xiuhcoatl. That should help. I've heard of the cousin-type creature, Quetzalcoatl. That one does have wings.”“This—it has everything described but the wings,” Draco told him, passing the book over.Taking it and reading the description more thoroughly, Remus nodded. “Good. We now have a direction to look.” Quietly, he called for Narcissa, who was in the stacks somewhere trying to hunt up more books on the topic of mythical snakes. When she poked her head out, he gave her the name. “See what you can come up with on that. It fits the description minus the wings. It might be the way to go.”“It's a strange description,” Draco chuckled, shaking his head.“Well, yes. It's Muggle mythology. Very ancient Muggle mythology. It's doubtful that much of it was right and may have been distorted with time or mistranslated from an ancient language. However, if we have the base description right, we might be able to find more.” Remus explained.“Some of the myths I read are fascinating and make me wonder if any part of them is real,” Draco admitted, looking at the man.“I think, probably, they all have a base of truth,” Remus told him, folding his hands on the table and smiling. “Part of it may be that they encountered something from our world and a story about it arose from there as it's the only way they had to explain it. In ancient times, that would be attributed to gods and such things as they had no other way to explain it. Others, it was something they encountered that was real which they attributed to being a monster. There are clay pots with elaborate drawings of horrifying beasts on them that had heads that were skeletonized. If you look at those heads from our perspective now, you can tell they were the skeletal remains of what we know as dinosaurs. They just created their own stories about them is all. Other things—well, we know they are real, like dragons, unicorns, fairies and the like. So, they aren't as dumb as some of our people make them out to be. They just don't have the knowledge about some topics we do is all.”Thinking that over, Draco nodded slowly. “I can see that.”“They are also quite entertaining to read,” Remus admitted, smiling. “Some of the ancient ones, especially from on the continent, were about epic battles of good versus evil with wonderful imagery. Most now know they are myths, but they still read them because they are wonderful stories and many have a good moral to them. Ask Harry about them. He can probably point you to some good ones as he talked about having to read many of them for Muggle school when he was growing up.”“I might,” Draco told him sincerely, nodding. Those did sound interesting, even if they were from Muggles.“If you're interested, have him give you some names and next time I go out, I can grab some of the books. I'd probably like them as well,” Remus admitted with a chuckle.Grinning at that, Draco said, “Yeah, I will I think.” He was about to press on when his mother seemed to be hurrying in their direction with her nose buried in a book, eyes wide.Looking at Narcissa, and the expression on her face, Remus asked, “Did you find something?”Taking a seat and laying the book out, Narcissa nodded. “It's a book about Merlin, actually. It talks about his familiar; a turquoise winged serpent with a blackened nose!” Shoving the book at Remus, she added, “It sounds just like what they were describing last night.”
Reading through what was there, Remus began to nod vigorously. “It fits, all of it.” Looking up at her, he sighed then said, shaking his head, “While it's a good base, the minute we start to look into anything about Merlin, we're going to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information about him. There is just so much out there on him that I wouldn't begin to know where to start.”“Well, yes, that is true,” Narcissa sighed, looking slightly dejected. “Let me send the title to Severus and copy of what I found. Between all of us, we can then see if we can't narrow down a search on this. Maybe, if we go about it this way, we can find something related as this topic intersects the whole seer aspect.”“You do that. While you do, Draco and I will see what we can do to narrow down the search field here then see what we can find.”Liking the thought of being helpful, Draco nodded, “Let's start with mythical familiars and see what we can find.”
Intently reading through the rune ritual he was going to perform while practicing the combination of them, Lucius just about jumped out of his skin when he heard a soft knock on the doorway to the room he was holed up in. Looking up, he chuckled then said, “You scared the life out of me, Harry,” when he saw the young man standing there. Leaning back in his chair, he motioned for him to come in.
Stepping in then shutting the door, Harry walked over and flopped into a chair. Nervous, he said, “I was wondering if I could talk to you about the ritual.”Assuming that since Black had told him he had talked to the young man about it, he said, quietly, “Of course. Whatever you want to know, I'll tell you.”Shaking his head, Harry sighed then said, “I'm not sure about this or how comfortable I am with some of the elements.”“How about I explain my plan for doing so then we go from there? That should give you an idea of what you're facing. Once that's out in the open, we can discuss it from there.”“Okay, that works,” Harry said, looking at him.Leaning forward, hands clasped and elbows on his knees, Lucius explained, “My thought is to darken the room to the point that even if you do open your eyes you won't see anything. That way, if you do, you won't end up upset by it. I'm certain you'll know what I'm doing at the time for obvious reasons. Beyond that, I will have you cut the connection with Sirius and we'll talk. Or I'll talk and you can just show images. I won't ask anything too intrusive, of course, just things along the lines of what you've liked best so far and such. Nothing more. Once you're comfortable, you can open the connection back up to Sirius.” Softening his voice, he added, gently, “I'm sure Sirius would like to know some of what you say to help him as you're having issues on your end of the equation.” Moving away from that, he pressed on, “That'll give me the proper motivation to do what's needed and will strengthen what I do because I’m focused on the person that the bond needs to be the strongest with. When I finish, I do the runes as you read. That's all there is to it.”“Nothing else strange?” Harry asked, looking down and thinking it over.“That's all,” Lucius told him firmly. “Of course, I'll need to touch you while doing it. That will be unobtrusive though. Something as simple as an arm under your head or whatnot is all that's needed there. Nothing more than that.”Nodding slowly, Harry sighed, “I think, maybe, I can handle this. I don't know.”“All you have to do is give visuals. As you're relatively inexperienced, I doubt they will be shocking. And I will give you my word that there will be no poking fun about your lack of experience or what you may like. We were all like this at one point, though it is hard to remember that at times.” Lucius told him gently. Quietly, he added, “I know this is hard. I think it was for all of us the first few times. Keep in mind that because of this bond, we're going to be together for a very long time. If what we know so far is correct, there won't be separating either. Which means getting to know each other is imperative unless we all want to be miserable. This is part of that. It's normal and a natural part of life. A very pleasurable chunk as well. If I thought it would help you, I would just talk to you about some areas and see what you think.”Pondering that, Harry asked, thoughtfully, “Could you go that way instead? It might be easier on me.”“If you like, I can,” Lucius told him with a nod. “I just would ask you to keep in mind that I have a great deal more experience in such areas than you do. If I border on something that makes you uncomfortable, I want you to tell me. Then, if you want to hear about something you've not encountered, do the same. I can easily explain it.” Lowering his voice, he said, “Like that vision you experienced before the incident with the goblet. That is something I've done before and can easily show you the mechanics of how it's managed.”Taking that in, Harry thought about it then nodded slowly, “I think I'd be more comfortable with it this way.”“We can do it this way then. Shan't be a problem,” Lucius told him with a smirk. “I would ask that if you find something intriguing, you say so. It will give both Sirius and I something to work with when it comes to you. I assume he's told you that we've talked about this?” Seeing the young man nod, he pressed on, “He's made it clear that this works both ways for all of us. I concur. There is no set dominant person that only does one thing. It's all interchangeable and more pleasurable that way. I'm sure you've found the sensations are just as pleasurable, though are different, from each end of the spectrum.” Stopping, he thought it over then offered, keeping his tone gentle, “I have some books you might like. They are intended to be educational. I didn't want to embarrass you by just handing them over. They were actually something I gave to Draco when he was younger to give the basics, including that same sex relations are normal. They aren't visually graphic or discuss more than just the basic act, more like essays on various topics to explain areas you may not understand. I can give you the other kinds as well, if you like. That may be easier on you to deal with rather than trying to talk to us about it.” Stopping, he added, hoping to soften that slightly, “If you never received the most basic of information, it'll help. None of them are pornographic. I think I can easily say that you are probably just starting to go through the biggest changes that come with adolescence. These books will give you an idea of what to expect with not only the sexuality part, but others as well. That can only help prepare you.”“Yeah, I think I'd like to see those as I'm not sure, beyond like shaving and that, what to expect here,” Harry admitted, looking at him.“These will give you a foundation, and a good one. They are well-respected and factual with no areas that aren't proven.” Lucius told him. “That's why I employed them with Draco. Even though we have a good relationship, as you're well aware, such discussions are embarrassing, especially on the end of the younger party. That was the case with us as well. This will help and no one is going to think a thing of it.” Seeing the young man nod, he said, “I'll have one of the elves leave them in our room for you. If you have questions, ask. Both Sirius and I went through this, obviously. We can explain anything you want to know.”“That I can do,” Harry said more confidently. Changing topics, he asked, “When do you think you'll be ready to try?”
“I should have the runes down pat by tomorrow, so, if you're willing, we can try tomorrow night. They are simplistic enough that the combination is an easy one. I just want to ensure I have them down automatically and know what may come of it if I make a mistake. That's all,” Lucius explained.Letting out a sigh, Harry said, “Okay. I'll be good with it. We'll go when you're ready if Sirius is fine with it.”“I'll talk it over with him tonight, I promise,” Lucius told him, pleased.“How much is this going to help from what you've seen?” He asked as he knew nothing about runes at all other than he had no desire to take the class.“It should, some anyway. How much I don't know,” Lucius told him, leaning back. Slowly, he began to walk him through the theory behind the ritual.
Striding into the Dark Lord's study, Severus bowed as normal then pulled out the parchment that Narcissa sent him. “They have found something, at least a start, and want help.” Handing it over, he sat down and waited.
Reading through what was there, Voldemort was pleased. “Good. This will give me somewhere to look. It's just the sorting of the mess on Merlin that will be the issue. Let me start on it tomorrow to see what I can find.”“Narcissa imparted that they are going to start with Magical familiars and see what they can find, hoping that narrows down the results and may point to another lead of some sort,” Severus told him. “I thought, maybe, while pondering it, to trace Potter's line and see how far back we can get it. At least on the Potter side. That may give a clue. However, if it comes from Lily's side, we'll be lost.”“It may,” Voldemort said with a nod. “I have a couple of people that are good with genealogy. I'll put them on the task to see what they can find. Even tracing through Muggle channels might be easier than we think. We'll see. One never knows. And, at this juncture, any help will be most welcome.” Straightening up, he looked at Severus and said, “I found something out and it needs kept between us for now.” Seeing the man nod, he said, “I checked into Mr. Potter's cousin as Lucius suggested.” Stopping, he sighed and shook his head then imparted quietly, “The young man is Magical. His magic was bound, probably just after birth. That would definitely explain some of the problems, like his weight.”“Any idea who did it?” Severus asked, face grave.“No. I only have guesses there and no way to prove them. However, I don't think it was Albus. The binding, from what little readings a couple people could get, doesn't appear to be done in a way that someone who had experience doing it would apply such a spell. Which means that someone who wasn't familiar with such spells did so. With what we know of the Dursleys, I would guess they didn't go to anyone like Albus to get help.”“Lily,” Severus said quietly.“That would be my assumption,” Voldemort told him with a nod. “She was Petunia's sister and the only reasonable guess I can make on the topic. She may have done it to help the woman. I don't know. Either that or had James do it. I'm not sure if Vernon is even aware it was done.”Shaking his head, sighing, Severus asked, “What are we going to do about that end of things? The young man will die an early death if it's left bound.”“I've come up with the most rudimentary of plans for this. It's one I do like and may help right now.” Looking at the man, he said, “We're going to attack Privet Drive. The wards are weak enough I can get through. It'll look like an attack by us that Albus will buy. We'll do some damage, of course, but not like we would for a full attack. Dudley will be the target for us to unbind the magic on. I'm not willing to do it right now, though. My thought is to wait a while for Lucius and Narcissa to work on those there and build trust. Once they have that and something in place for Mr. Potter to deal with Albus and his shields, then I will. I'll also ensure that Mr. Potter knows that I didn't do this to hurt his remaining family. I'll even explain to him why I took that step. Then the young man can learn what he needs to control it. If it's how you said and Mr. Potter is trying to build a relationship with Dudley, this may work well.”“I don't think Petunia and Vernon will take it well,” Severus told him quietly. “Their opposition to anything magical may even extend to their son.”“I did think of that,” Voldemort admitted. “It's my hope that we can count on something we all know about Mr. Potter; that he would be willing to step in and help his cousin, even if it means standing up to his aunt and uncle over it. Dudley may not take it well, but I guarantee he's going to feel better when his magic is unbound. It'll be like finally being whole for the first time in his life. You will be needed to push for someone to train him. That many years of bound magic is going to be dangerous if left untrained.”“That's something I can easily accomplish,” Severus told him with a firm tone. “It'll be readily apparent to anyone that sees him. Is there any way to tell how powerful Dudley is?”“He's no slouch there,” Voldemort told him with a shake of his head. “He's not in our league or even up with Mr. Potter, but he has power. Which will make it even more dangerous to work with if left untrained.”“I'll work with it the best I can,” Severus told him firmly. “Albus will be off-balanced at the attack on Privet Drive and fumble to do something with the Dursleys when it happens. I'll come up with something there to push him how we need him to go.” Stopping, he asked, quietly, “Do you think Albus knows the binding is there?”“That I don't know, Severus,” Voldemort told him quietly, shaking his head. “I'm not sure they've had enough interaction for Albus to determine one way or another. I dislike the man, no one would say otherwise, but even I don't think he would leave a child's magic bound that way.”Shaking his head, Severus didn't know what to say about that.“We'll work with it as it comes up. For now, we'll just plan. I have some people over that way keeping an eye on things to see what's going on. They won't raise suspicion as they aren't known followers. When the time is right, we'll deal with it from there and press on.” Changing topics, he said, softly, “I'm going to add here that we don't have much time to put any of this into action. By the time for the start of term at Hogwarts, there are going to be problems if we can't get them all out. Black and Potter won't be able to be separated. I doubt Lucius will be able to be away from them either. Albus is going to notice when Mr. Potter can't go back for various reasons. There is no excuse I can think of that he's going to buy from any of them as a reason the young man can't go back to school. Which means, we need to push something here to get it playing in the direction we need.”Shaking his head, Severus looked down then said, “I have no idea what either. The only thing that I can think of is manifesting the seer aspect. That, I don't think, we can push. Even this research isn't something we can speed up as we're all working on it to the best of our ability. It's going to take time.”“I know,” Voldemort told him grimly. “The only thing we have that may help is something we can't get our hands on; that locket. If the house elf at Grimmauld Place won't help, finding the thing is going to be a huge issue. I'm not counting on it being in a place that you may just stumble across it.”“Is there any way for you to get something across to Kreacher? The issue with Narcissa is he views her as a blood traitor, something she isn't. If you could convince him that she's there at your behest, he may give it up. The same with Draco's parentage. I would try, but he views me with suspicion and won't listen.”Looking down at his desk, fingertips drumming on it, Tom nodded slowly, “Let me see what I can manage here. I'll look into a couple things to see what I can't get across. I'm not sure how as house elves view matters differently than we do, but I may be able to do something, somewhere. I don't know here.”“That locket may not be what we need, but he has information we do that can at least point us in the right direction. At this time, we need even the slightest of hints as to what to look into,” Severus told him.“Let me see if I can get with a couple people that know house elf behavior then go from there. They may have something I can use to give you some kind of help. For now, tell everyone to keep doing what they are. I know that this is probably going to cause Mr. Potter a great deal of pain he won't want to deal with, but it's coming anyway.” Stopping, he thought it over then asked, tone distracted, “Do you think it would aid anything if you got with Black to make an offer to help him get out?”“It may,” Severus told him cautiously. “Mr. Potter has already given up the real reason I'm helping. Black and Lupin, both, believe it. As it's the truth, he might listen as they are working with me on the topic. If I get with Black and Lupin alone, I can offer help, pointing them to what they already know. I can also be honest in admitting that I have no idea how to do it either as we have no plan in place at all when it comes to this end of the equation.”“I'm going to suggest you do that,” Tom told him firmly. “On my end, I'll start working on a safe haven for them. We can't put them where we normally would and I doubt, even if I prove that I'm not going to hurt them, they'll want to stay here. It's something that needs taken care of anyway. You start on your end, and I'll start on mine.”Though this was going to involve more work on his part, Severus was pleased with it. He just had to figure out how to go about it was all. “I'll see what I can manage here and get with you if I need help.”“You do that. Pass along to Narcissa and Lucius we're doing the best we can and to keep on how they are. If we need them for something, I'll let them know,” Tom said, relaxing back in his chair. Moving away from that topic, he pressed on to getting information about what Albus was up to.
