Chapter 19
Sirius was pleased as hell it was Remus that came in after the door opened. Though his oldest friend had some bruises and a few cuts, he didn't look like he was seriously hurt. After waiting until he sat down, he asked, “Is everyone all right?”
“As far as I could tell, yes,” Remus nodded, summoning a beer to steady his nerves after that debacle. He wasn't normally one to indulge until after dinner, especially if there was business to tend to, but he felt he more than earned one. “Just some cuts, bruises and scorch marks from what I could tell. They were still mopping up the mess when they shooed me to come home and check on both of you.” Once he glanced around, he asked, “PJ is fine, is he not?”“He's good,” Sirius confirmed letting out a sigh of relief that there didn't end up any casualties over that nightmare. “He has a damned good bruise on his temple from those books that came down and is shaken up, but nothing more.”“Alastor noticed he was bleeding when you both were whisked away. Well, that and he wanted to ensure that neither of you were hit with the AK as it was headed right your way.” Remus told him, feeling better.“It was a damned near thing on the AK,” Sirius told him with a snort and shake of his head. “If PJ hadn't managed to get that Portkey activated when he did, one of us would have been gone.” After a shudder at how close of a call it was, he asked, “Any clue why the Malfoy spawn pulled that stunt? Either that or what he hoped to accomplish? Going after PJ with me right there made no damned sense, especially with what he said.”“No concrete proof, no,” Remus admitted with a sigh and shake of his head. “We have some pretty good guesses, though. Severus is going to try to find out for sure, from what Albus told us as the DMLE was mopping up the mess, but his leaning was it was done to set you off. Albus doesn't think Draco had any intention of the stunt actually succeeding as it was too—odd for it to work. What it normally would have ended up with was you just going off your nut and going after him. From what we saw, there were plenty waiting to back him up, including his father and Bella. They might not have managed to take out anyone other than you, but it would have been one down.”As Sirius processed what Remus said, looking at him, he then gave a slow nod. “Makes sense now. They had to know I would have done about anything to save PJ because of what was in the paper about our relationship. They just didn't count on us having a plan to get out.” Then, with a huge grin, he added, “Or knowing that me protecting him rather than fighting was going to come first. They seemed like they were going for drawing me into a fight.”“We think that as well,” Remus told him, smiling as he did. Then he sobered up and added, “Keep that in mind, Sirius. From here on out you need to worry about protecting PJ and not fighting. Let the rest of us take that on. You just worry about keeping him out of this mess.” He then added, lowering his voice, “Because PJ can do this whole mess a world of good with what else he can pull out. Plenty might not think so, but him putting the truth out there, or getting the story to someone that will, can help in more ways that just fighting. While I get it's a good story for him or his friend, it's done plenty for this fight, in more ways than he realizes. We need that, desperately. Those articles are pushing the ones we need in the direction we want them so we can take the fight to the other side. Until now, that's not happened.”“Very true and not something I thought of,” Sirius admitted, sipping at his own beer. “I'll talk to him a bit later about it.” Then, with a sigh, he shut his eyes before adding, softly, “And talk to him about getting himself out. I adore having him here, something obvious, but I don't want him in a position like he was today ever again. Well, or like in Hogsmeade either. I'd rather have him somewhere else and not in the line of fire.”Remus looked at Sirius then pondered what he said before, very quietly, telling him, “I don't think that's wise. While he's in plenty of danger because of his attachment to you, he's probably safer right here, Sirius. We can keep an eye on him and let him know what's coming. Despite all that's been said on the topic, Albus isn't going to give up looking for him. Neither are others, including the other side. I think the danger he's in hiding under everyone's noses is balanced out by the fact we can keep him protected. If he's on his own, he's won't have any clue if someone is close to discovering who or where he is. This is safer, by far.”“True,” Sirius said with a small smile, adoring he had a good solid reason to keep PJ here and the danger he was in was balanced out by the fact it might end up worse if he was on his own. “I'll talk to him and lay it out, but I'll go by what he says.” With a shrug, he told Remus, “I'm pretty sure the thought of hightailing it out of here to stay safe has crossed his mind since spells started flying earlier. Let me see what he has to say on the matter. Well, I'm also sure T probably mentioned it as well since he was going to talk to her so she heard what happened from him rather than reading it in the paper.”“Another wise move on his end,” Remus admitted with a nod. “Tonight when it settles down, after everyone leaves, I think we need to talk about bringing the third into the secret, Sirius. She can help. You know she can.”“In the end, that one is PJ's choice,” Sirius told him softly, planning to leave it completely up to his godson as PJ had the most to lose when it came to the nightmare.“I completely agree,” Remus told him with a nod and smile.Sirius figured they didn't have much time before they ended up bombarded with all kinds of people and he was sure the DMLE would put out feelers to talk to him and PJ, so he said, “Let's grab PJ. He wanted to treat all those that helped to dinner. What he mentioned was getting pizza and beer. There's a place not far from here we can grab both. If we do it this way, he can do what he planned and we don't have to brave going out again.”“We can,” Remus nodded. “Between the three of us, we should be safe. And I'm sure it'll be very appreciated by all those that were involved.”“Let me go get him and we'll get going. Leave a note with one of the elves so no one gets worried,” Sirius told him as he stood. This would work out well. As it was bound to end up a busy night, this would make it so PJ had something to eat and could hide out for the duration.
While PJ waited for Sirius to go into the whole bit he wanted to discuss when it came to the idea of him just packing up and leaving, he had already made his mind up. After it was all laid out for him, he shook his head. “I'm not leaving. Remus' reasons are enough, honestly. And I agree with what he said on it. I'd much rather stay on my toes here and have a heads up, than end up blindsided. If someone did track me down, you're not going to have much time to warn me. It's better this way.”
“I figured, but wanted it out there as an option,” Sirius nodded, relieved, as he didn't want PJ to leave. “We'll manage this way, you have my word. Besides, you can get plenty of work if you stay.”With a smile on his face, PJ told him, “There's another reason as well and it's nothing to do with me working.”“What's that?” Sirius asked, curious. He figured the budding relationship was part of it, but not the motivation behind all of it. Now he wondered what else there was.Eyes locked on the floor, PJ grinned and told him, softly, “Because I finally have a home.” Before Sirius could comment, he shook his head, “You need to understand, I've not had one since T sent me away. Even before, though she did her best, it wasn't home. There was too much shit that happened in that house for me to consider it home. Since then, I've pretty much wandered and drifted, calling the school my home until I left. Then I had apartments, but they were just—well, not home. Now I do. You and Remus are the closest thing I have to a family beside T and I rather like it. So, I don't just want to haul up stakes and vanish again. I'd rather stay right where I am.”Though Sirius hadn't thought about it from that perspective, he understood it. With a grin, he told PJ, “This is your home, as far as I'm concerned. All there is to it. And you're welcome to stay as long as you like. Hell, I love having you here! Makes it nice and we have fun.”“I like it as well, despite the chance of me getting caught,” PJ admitted with a nod. “Beats trying to watch my own back all the time and being alone like I have been since I graduated.”“We'll manage, don't worry,” Sirius assured him, feeling far better now that PJ made it clear he wasn't leaving. While he hadn't thought he would, the possibility was there. Deep down, he realized that if PJ had decided to leave, something he could easily understand the why behind, he would have gone with him, despite being needed here. Part of the reason was because of who PJ was and how he did need help protecting himself, despite how good he was. The other was—well, he wanted to see if this would work. If PJ left and he didn't go with him, he wouldn't ever have that chance. So, this was perfect.“Now, about this bit with bringing Tonks into the secret,” PJ started, figuring that was enough of that topic. “What do you think? I get she's close to Remus, but I want to make damned sure she's not going to let any of it slip, Sirius. Though she's an Auror, something I know is hard to get into, she's a bit flighty on some bits.”“She can be, I admit it,” Sirius nodded, chuckling. “Not to mention dead clumsy, but she knows to keep some bits to herself. After all, she kept what was going on between her and Remus a secret for a long time, not only to give him time to get moving the way she wanted him to, but so others didn't give them grief. If she has to, she can keep it to herself.”“I've talked with her a couple times since the bit in the papers hit and she's not real happy with what she perceives Albus set up. While she believes in the cause, she's also of the opinion, like so many others, that he needs to leave you the hell out of it. She told Remus that she made a choice to help and thinks you deserve the chance to make the same one. I don't see her changing her mind if she learns who you really are.”Though he had to think it over, PJ finally nodded and told him, “I'll trust both of your judgments on this then. If you say she's good, we'll go from there.”“I wouldn't have even entertained the notion if I didn't think we could trust her,” Sirius told him honestly.“Well, when you two think the time's right, let me know and we'll set up something to fill her in.” PJ told him, leaning back and taking a sip of his beer. As he didn't think there was any more they needed to cover with that bit and would deal with it when it came up, he asked, “We're supposed to go to the Ministry tomorrow then? Something about a statement?”“Yes,” Sirius nodded. “We were told during the meeting tonight they want all of us that were in the store to come in tomorrow and give a statement. Nothing to worry about. I figured you, Remus and I would go in together and get it over with. They have plenty of witnesses, so it's just covering what they can if they need it for later. As there were some Aurors around when it kicked off, it's nothing to worry about. We'll be in and out in under a half an hour. The two of us are what they need most as we were up close and personal with Draco when he pulled that shit.”“I figured,” PJ groaned, shaking his head. “Did they catch the little oik or is he still running around loose?”“As usual, the little shit got away,” Sirius groused, angry about that event. “Not sure what happened, but Remus said he thought Lucius might have had something to do with it. Either way, he did. I can understand it, honestly. Once we vanished, some big names turned up. The DMLE would have focused more on those than Draco. Though I'm pretty sure this stunt now has him in their sights.”“He'll wiggle out or Lucius will bribe someone so he does,” Harry snorted, shaking his head. “That's always how it was in school and has been since then, from what research shows. Until someone actually steps in, he's going to continue right on doing it.”“Either that or he's going to end up dead,” Sirius told him softly. “Everyone's noticed the same pattern you have, including that evil arse. He knows Lucius would do anything to make sure Draco doesn't pay the cost. I'd bet my wand it's part of the reason he was the one picked for that stunt today. Between Lucius' money, clout and connections, that side is sure he'll end up getting off and they'll use him again.”“It keeps up, he's going to end up used to death,” PJ groaned, shaking his head. “Or locked away in a cell so deep, no one will ever find him again.”“One or the other is coming, I agree,” Sirius nodded. “And, from what we know, he doesn't get it either. He thinks Lucius will always be able to bail him out or no one would think to charge him because of daddy. Even now, despite all that's happened, he doesn't get there are limits to Lucius' power. And I'm wondering if he finally hit them. From what we heard at the meeting tonight, plenty in the DMLE are now looking at him for this mess. I'm sure that our statements tomorrow might nudge it along.”“Something needs to,” Harry told him, crossing his legs. “Sorry, if you want to play with the big boys, you get to take your lumps right along with them. He had to know just what he was doing with this crap.”“You'll get no argument from me there.” With a bit of an evil grin, he suggested, “You might want to suggest that to Du Bois. This is a story you don't want to take on, PJ, at least from the point of what happened today. Exposing all Lucius has done over the years to wiggle Draco out of trouble can only help.”“Let me see what I can do,” PJ told him, distracted as he thought it over. This sounded like it could be quite an interesting story to take on. He would run it by Du Bois to see what he thought of the idea. After filing it away to think about later, PJ downed the last of his beer then chucked the empty in the trash. Stretching, he groaned loudly and snorted “It's been a long damned day!”“It has,” Sirius admitted, checking the time. While it was still early by their standards, about nine in the evening, it felt far later. “Don't know about you, but I'm dead arse tired after today.”“I am as well,” PJ chuckled, head going back and his eyes sliding shut. After downing the last of his own beer, Sirius vanished the empty and stood. Then he moved over to where PJ was sitting. Straddling him in the chair, he pressed him back into the cushions and kissed him softly. As their lips were locked, he felt PJ's arms wrap around him, holding him close. He then let one hand drift up to run though PJ's thick hair. This was good and he adored it.Though he broke the kiss off quickly, he remained where he was, hand still in PJ's hair, feeling that nice body pressed tightly to his. This was amazing, all there was to it. And he loved it, wanting more. Just not yet. He wanted it to come naturally, not to force it.With a soft groan, he told PJ, “I'm beat and need some sleep.”“So do I,” PJ admitted, not letting go of Sirius.Sirius then leaned in for another quick kiss, but broke it off quickly. Hand slipping out of PJ's hair, he then stood. “Let me go use the loo then it's all yours.” Seeing a nod, he headed off that way.
About one in the morning, PJ tossed the phone onto the desk and leaned back with a groan. With a tired sigh, he rubbed both hands over his face and slumped in his chair. It was good, though. He gave Du Bois everything he had and ran the idea about Draco by the man. Du Bois loved the idea and planned to take it all on. While they discussed him helping, they decided it was a bad idea. He would stick to working on what he was doing and leave the other parts to Du Bois.
In the end, they decided he would focus on the Ministry and reporting about their handling of the mess, other than bits like what happened today, while Du Bois would take the rest. This wasn't what he had planned, as he wanted to go it alone, but it would work better. He was getting too much information that he just couldn't cover without blowing his secret. Du Bois was more than happy to take on part of it. Good.Tired, he planned to go to bed and not write like normal. It had been a day where it was stressful enough that the creative process had suffered for it. Once more grabbing his phone, he plugged it into the laptop so it could charge then he stood. Stretching, he groaned loudly then slumped. It was time for bed, that's for damned sure. After taking a seat on the edge of the bed, he stripped down to his boxers then sent his dirty clothes to the hamper. After turning the covers down, he sat there and looked at the partition. He couldn't see through it, of course, but knew Sirius was on the other side. Just looking at it, he gave a soft sigh. Part of him, a huge part, wanted to go over and join him. He didn't. While he was pretty sure that Sirius wouldn't mind, he didn't want to take that step yet. It was better to let this move in that direction slowly rather than push it. If it was meant to be, it would happen.Though he stared at the partition for a few more minutes, he eventually shook his head and laid down. After dousing the lights, he slipped his wand under his pillow like normal then flopped on his side and shut his eyes. Sleep didn't come easily, though. At first, the events at the bookstore played out over and over, going in slow motion. While he didn't venture into the realm of what could have happened, that niggling was there, especially when he kept envisioning that tell-tale green light headed at them. He tried not to think about the other memory he had over that green light. As the night pressed on and sleep didn't come, though he fell into that place between awake and a doze, Sirius was more where he focused. Not the visions of what happened in the bookstore, but other areas, especially the times when they were alone, like earlier. Finally, just before dawn, he slipped off to sleep. Rather than just remember what had happened between the two of them, they became dreams of what he wished to have happen. That's when he smiled. Yes, he wanted this, badly. He yearned for it to work and to settle down for the first time in his life. And he wanted it to be with Sirius. There was something there he desired, not just in having a relationship with Sirius that he hadn't been able to over the years, but this relationship. As he slept, he smiled. He adored it here and wanted it to work. It would work. He would find a way. How? Well, he didn't know yet, but he'd manage.
