Chapter 19
“Keep that on at all times,” Sirius told Draco as he pushed what looked like a wristwatch over to him. Then he handed him the instructions on how to use it. “Lucius gave me an old watch that doesn't run right anymore and I've charmed it to use for a glamour. Just follow the instructions on the sheet and pick the combination you like. As long as the watch stays on your wrist, it'll hold.”
“Good,” Charlie said, pleased as he read over the simple instructions on how to set up the glamour. Today was the first day he was going to work on the reserve in Wales, so they had to have something in place for Draco so he wasn't recognized.“You have everything else you need, like protective clothing, don't you?” Narcissa asked, looking at the two. Of course, like any mother, she was concerned about her son. As dangerous as dragons were to work around, she was understandably worried.“Not all, but it's been ordered. I've taken some of my gear and temporarily shrunk it for him. That will hold until what we purchased comes in. The boots fit. As I have several pairs, he's good there. Other parts—size doesn't matter and I have extras. So, he'll be fine,” Charlie explained to her. “As I'm just transferring in to this reserve, I'm not sure we'll be around the dragons much anyway as we have to go through orientation and then they'll assign me where to work.”“Listen to what you're told, Draco, and stick close to Charlie. All of those who work on the reserve know what they're doing, so they can keep you safe,” Lucius schooled, looking at his son. He knew what Draco was like and hoped he would listen as this was dangerous.“I will, Father,” Draco told him with a nod as he tried to find just the right glamour he liked. While he was excited to see the dragons, he was also concerned enough about the danger involved that he planned to stay close to Charlie.“It should go fine. Charlie has done this for a long time and knows what to watch out for,” Remus said for the benefit of the two worried parents. Then he pressed on and asked, looking at Severus and the twins, “It's back to the shop today for the three of you?”“Yes,” Fred confirmed with a nod.“It's going fine, so we're not worried,” George added.“We've developed a way to handle it,” Severus then jumped in. “It's no overt hardship for any of us.”“As long as it's working, go with it,” Lucius nodded. “Since the five of you are out of the house today, the elves are going to take on warding your floors and start the decorating. Well, the basics anyway, such as carpet, expansion, whatnot. They won't take on more until you decide how you want it decorated.”After hearing the normal agreements, Sirius chimed in, “Harry has a Healer's appointment tonight. We're going about it the same way we did last time. This time around it shouldn't take nearly as long as the worst is over. Now it's just spells and getting him what he needs, nothing more.”“We don't expect a problem,” Bill told them all honestly. “It's one we'll probably be having once a week until he gets all the spells in place. As the pain is under control and we have good potions for what we need, it won't take much.”“Nothing to worry about,” Remus agreed with a nod. “Just so we know you're gone in case there are issues. It's best to tend to it now anyway.”Lucius then jumped back in, “Tonight we want everyone, aside from Sirius, Harry, Bill, Narcissa, Remus and myself to get with the elves about how you want your floors done. With you being gone most of the day, they can get on what you'd like and tend to putting away your belongings. It’ll be easier on them if you aren’t here. And on yourselves, honestly. After all, if they do it while you're away, you won't have to put up with them doing their jobs or be forced to stay out of your rooms.”Once the normal affirmations were given, they pressed on to the usual matters in the morning while they waited for everyone to leave. Lucius and Remus, both, thought the other 'couples' out of the house might give them all time to work on a strategy for how to go about figuring out so much of the mess they still had to work on, especially the part with Albus. It might end up easier if they could get together and work out how to go about dealing with all that was handed to them.
“This is rather amusing,” Remus said with a chuckle, walking down the main hall on the floor Harry, Sirius and Bill were sharing. The walls had murals of Egypt on them, the Magical kind. Not only did bits like the sand and trees move in the fake wind, but the small animals in the painting interacted. It was a beautiful piece of art. And the carpet was charmed to look like sand. It rippled like the real thing would and even left your footprints in it, though you could tell by stepping on it that it was carpeting.
“We went with different themes for each room. The one we picked out for the rec room is set up like the interior of a bar. We have a forest room and a couple other odd ones.”“I'm slightly apprehensive of what the bedroom is going to look like,” Lucius said with a soft chuckle, shaking his head. It was interesting, though. Not the normal fare when it came to decorating, but not overly strange either. It most certainly brightened up the floor as it had been rather gloomy and foreboding before.“It's not that strange,” Harry chuckled. “I promise. We just picked something we all liked and went with it.”“I think, with the three of you, we'll reserve judgment there,” Remus told him with a smile.“I think you'll both recognize the theme,” Bill grinned as he put his hand on the knob of the bedroom door. Then, grinning bigger, he opened it.“Oh, I do,” Remus said, stepping in and looking around. “It's the dorm from Hogwarts. Quite well done, too!” Not only did the walls look like the stone of the castle, but the floors were done the same way and there was the typical four-poster bed with the hangings. The walls were adorned with the same kind of decorations. The only difference was it seemed to combine not only the dorm itself, but the common room as well.“Very nice design,” Lucius admitted with a nod, glancing around. “Slytherin's dorms were slightly different, but it's the basic scheme, yes.” Then he snorted and added with a smirk, “Well, without the Gryffindor colors, that is.”After everyone took a seat at the table, Sirius told them, “We had them do the bathroom like the Prefects up by Gryffindor. It's something we all liked, so we went with it. As it's something we can change if we get bored with the scheme, it's no biggie.”“All that matters is you're comfortable,” Remus told them, still smiling. He was sure he understood why the three picked this particular theme. Hogwarts was the first real ‘home’ each of them had. Sirius' home life was horrific and he hated it here. Bill's, from the sound of it, wasn't much better. Harry's was the same way. The three had found their first real home at Hogwarts where they were accepted for just who they were and found their true family there. It stood to reason they would like the scheme as it was soothing in a time when so much had been turned upside down. Then Remus changed topics and asked, “How did it go with the Healer? You said there weren't any issues.” It was just after supper, the three had gone to the healers appointment and everyone was now home. He wasn't sure if something had come up that they didn't want to discuss in front of the others or it went just how it sounded. They wanted filled in before they pressed on.“It went just how we said,” Bill nodded. “Nothing off.”“The next one is going to take longer since he wants to run a full body scan to determine if it's cropping up anywhere else or which joints might end up more affected. So, we need to plan for that,” Sirius told the two, looking between them.“We also need Fred and George to start picking up the potions for me. I have enough for this week, but he sent in the standing order we need to have. We'll say something to them tomorrow morning. The account is activated with it, so they don't need to pay. It'll just be a quick in and out bit for them as we have the paper they need to show.” Harry explained.“Shouldn't be a problem,” Lucius nodded, pleased. “It's helping, isn't it? You seem like you're in better shape without the pain you were dealing with.”“Much better,” Harry assured him with a smile. “I get some pain, but not like it was. The potions are helping.”“That's all that matters.” Remus told him with a smile. He then changed topics and said, “Lucius and I are going to try to get Charlie alone so we can get his end of what we discussed about Albus. While we don't think he can add a lot more than all of you did, we want to have as much information as we can. It's our thought to get all of us together in this room when we do so Charlie isn't apprehensive that you don't know.”“That's fine. Set it up when you can,” Bill nodded, slipping an arm around Harry. “It's going to be Fred and George you want to talk to, though. They know more as they were around Harry all the time. Hell, they made sure to stick as close to him as they could to help.”“The problem is Severus,” Lucius admitted with a sigh. “While we have those spells in place, I'm not exactly sure how to approach him about this mess. It's my hope to get more a feel of what I need to do on that end once we talk to Charlie.”“He'll be the stick in the spokes, won't he?” Sirius sighed, shaking his head.“We think this could be a good foundation for getting all the rest out of him we need to know,” Remus tossed in there, looking between the three. “He knows plenty about what's going on, probably more than most in the Order because of how much he talks to Albus. We need that information as well, but don't have a clue how to go about getting it from him. It's our hope that Lucius can use all the information you've given us to wheedle it out of him. Well, or start to. It's going to take time.”“I don't think time is something we have a lot of, Lucius,” Bill said with a mirthless chuckle, shaking his head. “Albus was planning something and this mess has thrown it so far off that he's probably already trying to come up with another way to go about it.”“We know,” Remus told him with a heavy sigh, looking slightly upset. “Severus is—well, you know him. Whatever he knows isn't something he's going to give up easily, especially if it's been a closely guarded secret for so long.”“Time is of the essence, I know,” Lucius assured all of them, looking around. “Let me see what all we can get first before I jump into that end. It's my hope, since he has to listen in when Fred and George talk, he might be slightly more forthcoming. Either that or your brothers may be able to goad him into talking. One of the two.”“The second one might be your best option to start it,” Bill told him with a nod after thinking it over. “If there's a way to get it across to them, let them do what they can. If nothing else, they may be able to coax him into giving some of it up as it's right.”“I'm sure we can find a way to get them what we need,” Remus assured the three with a nod. “A small note should be all it takes. Either that or we can have you write one up.”“Easily done and I will. Harry and I can come up with something so they know we both want them to fill you in on the situation,” Bill nodded.Though Sirius didn't have much to add to this part of the discussion, he thought he had something that might help. “How about the three of us sit down and write up everything we can remember. I'll even add in my end of what I know was going on. It proves we, and many others, were lied to over it. You might want to do the same, Remus. If we have it all down and out there, it might nudge Snape the right way.”“Excellent suggestion and we'll do it,” Remus told him with a determined nod. “I'll have Charlie do the same. Then bring it up to the twins. Not only will it help with Severus, or so we hope, but we'll have a complete record of what went on.”“We need to add in what went on with mum and dad as well,” Bill said, looking around. “It factors in, heavily, I'm sure of it. The twins can take that on more than Charlie or I can, but even our observations can help.”“Yes, add those in,” Lucius told him. “Once we get everything, we'll attempt to put it all together in some kind of order then pass it back and have you look over it once more then add what else you might think needs to be in there. When we have it, we'll see about getting with Fred and George. Severus will, obviously, overhear and it might jar something loose I can use to get out of him what he knows.”Harry listened in to what was said carefully. When it appeared they were finished, he said, quietly, “I get what you're going for, I really do, and it sounds like it could work, but there's something that is bothering me about it.”“What's that?” Remus asked, more than willing to listen to any concern Harry had about the scheme. After all, he knew more about what was going on than most 'in the know' about the whole situation.“Snape,” Harry sighed. “Look, I'm not taking after the man, I'm really not. We don't get along, something obvious to all, but that's not where it's coming from.”“What's your issue with the plan?” Lucius asked, curious. Harry wasn't what he had always thought him to be over the years and wasn't a fool. He also knew plenty he had kept to himself over the years. It might factor in here, so it behooved all of them to listen.“My worry about it is if he gets the full slap of what's really going on, he's going to—well, not panic, as he doesn't do that as far as I know, but go straight to Dumbledore with what I've laid out. After all, we all know some, like Fudge, who will protect their belief system with all they have as it's too hard to change your mind and admit you were wrong. Snape's done that before, with plenty, because he can't reverse tracks. I'm afraid he'll do the same bit here. And if he does, we'll all have a world of problems. At the moment, he can't, not without the twins being along, but even they are getting a longer tether. If it keeps going, he'll be able to do things on his own and no one will know. I'm not sure why he's doing what he is or the spying, all of it, but there has to be a reason as he doesn't seem the type to do it because 'it's right'. There is more to it than that. And I'm also sure it involves Dumbledore and whatever he has cooked up. So, I'm worried. We don't need some of this out there. Though the old man can't do much to me now or try to draw me in as Sirius and Bill are always with me, one never knows what he's going to pull. And he needs no help with that in the form of getting information from Snape if he ends up knowing what we're talking about.”Sirius took in all Harry said then began to nod. After putting a hand on the back of his godson's head and rubbing it, he looked at Bill who was shooting him a pointed look. “Harry has a point,” he finally said, focusing back on the two across the table from him. “A damned good one. We do not want some of this getting back to Albus at this point. At least not until we figure out what the hell is really going on. I get Snape isn't a huge fan of Albus, from how he talks to him and some other bits we've observed over the years, but he's known to tell him everything that doesn't put himself in a bad light. It doesn't matter how small it is.”“He does,” Remus admitted with a sigh and shake of his head. “There has to be a way to make sure he hears it, but can't pass any of the information along. Without invoking something that takes away his free will. And what that is I don't know. Harry's correct in he's not one to change stances, unless it's something huge and almost life-altering. We all know it. This—I'm not sure he wouldn't pass it to Albus, all of it. Which means before we can work on getting what we need to know, we have to find a way to make sure it doesn't get back to Albus.”Head in his hands, Lucius tried to think. And he was coming up with nothing. They desperately needed what Fred and George knew so he could leverage Severus because they needed what Severus had knowledge of more. After a few moments, he thought he might have something. Quietly, he said, “How about this; we press on with what we just talked about. While we do, I'll get the family records of what properties I own that are out of the country. As we try, we'll find somewhere for the three of you to go. If it looks like Severus is going to talk to Albus, or we get wind he has, you vanish until it blows over. While trying to get what he knows, we can put a bug in Fred and George's ear to have them keep close watch on him so we'll know if he contacts Albus. If he does, you leave and we back off. It's not the best solution, but it's a backup plan we can all work with. While we wiggle, I'll do what I can to get what Severus knows. And try in a way that will make it clear he shouldn't say anything. Let me see what I can manage.”After leaning in and conferring with Bill and Harry, Sirius straightened up then nodded. “We'll go about it that way. We just want it in place, fast. One hint he's talking to Albus and we want out.”“I'll get on it,” Lucius assured him with a placating gesture. “We carry on how we are, then. I'll find a way to get it out of him and make it to where he doesn't run to Albus. Just give me time.” Then he pressed on with what they were talking about, hoping to get as much hashed out as they could before bedtime.
Remus leaned back in his chair with a soft sigh and watched Lucius pace around their room. It was just before bedtime and they were trying to wind down so they could get some sleep. However, the conversation with Bill, Harry and Sirius was weighing on their minds. It appeared it was more on Lucius’ than his. After watching Lucius make another trek around the room, he asked, softly, “Are you coming up with any way to work with the situation or just making yourself mental?”
“Maybe,” Lucius sighed, stopping and looking at Remus. “The barest of bones anyway. I just need some of the information we can get from the others before I start tackling Severus.” Then, with a heavy groan, he added, “And it won't be pretty. I have a feeling we’re going to end up in a shouting match over it.”“We don't need all out war, Lucius,” Remus told him gently with a shake of his head. “That will wind up with more than just the two of you involved. It's hard enough to deal with outside people stirring up trouble, we don't need it internally.”“I know,” Lucius assured him with a wave of his hand. “Give me time to hone what I have in mind and it shouldn't. It should also kick Severus the way we need him. I'd prefer to do it alone—well, as alone as we can get so some of it doesn't end up out there.” Seeing a questioning look from Remus, he said, “It has to do with some information I have from the first war. I'm going to need to toss it out there to get his attention. It's best it stay as much of a secret as we can keep it so it doesn't set others off. Just give me time to hone what we need and use the information from the others we can get to point him in the right direction.”Highly curious about what Lucius meant, Remus gave a nod then told him, “I'll let you take it on how you feel is best. After all, you know him better than the rest of us do.” Then, quietly, he asked, “What it is you know? I'd prefer to have the information before it's tossed out there so I don't end up blindsided and cause issues myself.”Lucius came over and flopped down at the table then said, “I think it might be related to why he's spying, though I'm not sure. Until I can confirm it from him, it's just speculation. Keep that in mind.” Then he began walking Remus through what he knew about the Prophecy, though it wasn’t much, and how Severus had gone and begged for Lily's life. While he didn't know for certain they were connected with the spying, he had a feeling they were. And, if they were, he could use it to get the man's attention. He would just have to wait and see there. At this point, he would use almost everything he could so they didn't end up in a nightmare they couldn't counter. Albus might think it would only affect the two with Harry, whatever he wanted to pull, but as close as Harry was to the others and Sirius' relationship with Remus, it would mean all of them would be pulled in. That was just poking the dragon when it came to a nightmare happening. No, it needed stopped. And if it meant going toe to toe with Severus to get information, he would. He just needed to figure out how, nothing more.
