Chapter 19
With a tired groan, Tom flopped in his chair and picked up the cup of tea which an elf had immediately delivered. After a drink, pleased it was sweetened and flavored just how he liked, he tossed a sheaf of parchments on the desk. Then he pulled out a broom and unshrunk it, standing it along the wall. Though it was early in the morning, just after nine, he had been quite busy already.
First stop was his Solicitor. Unlike what most would think, he did have one. The man also knew who he was, too. Because of their laws, it couldn’t be revealed, so he was safe. As he was protected, he filled the man in completely on what was transpiring then had him take on Sirius’ case. Because of the bond, he could dictate what went on. Sirius didn’t know yet.He had, in the folder, not only Sirius’ pardon papers, but reparations which were already deposited in the bank. There was an odd bit he did find out about the bank end, though. It appeared he could get into the other two’s vaults and they could get into his. For now, it meant nothing, but it might come in handy later. Normally, he wouldn’t pass along this tidbit of information, but he planned to for his own reasons. There were other papers involved in the mass, but he wouldn’t show them to the two. Mostly it had to do with legislation, protection and an official protest about Fudge’s fiddling with Lucius. The protest would end up filed, secretly, with the right people without a name showing. As the three of them were the harmed persons in this case, it would be official. Most wouldn’t see it, but those in the prosecutor’s office would, without names. And it would carry plenty of weight. The prosecutor wouldn’t know how many people were involved or the names, but they would know what it meant and would add what he needed to any negotiations. The way he had it worded made it clear they didn’t want negotiations, what they wanted was the book thrown at Draco. It should help and derail Cornelius if he once more stuck his nose in that area. Good. After leaning forward, he snagged the biggest of the stacks in the folder then relaxed back, crossing his legs and began to look through it. This was what he had wanted from Severus. As he was well aware of what Severus’ schedule was like, he summoned him right after dawn that morning to have him deliver the results. Since he knew what Severus was like, he assumed he would have results of what Albus knew. It could only help all of them. While it wouldn’t be everything the bearded nightmare knew on the topic, he hoped it would be enough.Though he wanted to read the whole thing right now, he wouldn’t. It would take time to slug through this mass. A quick glance had him pleased with what was there. Like always with Severus, it was well written, concise and contained footnotes. He would gather some of the sources, of course, if he thought they would help and to check Severus’ work, but planned to rely on what was here. It was his hope there would be more in here than they had found on the topic.Very quickly, he spotted several areas which they hadn’t found, meaning he would make time this morning to fully go through this. However, he needed to set it aside. There were other tasks to tend to before he could take this on. With a smirk, he straightened up then called for the head elf. Remembering what Black had said about wanting a feast, he was going to plan for one. And it would be the likes of which would be better than anything Hogwarts ever had. Yes, he was going to make this special. While conferring with the elf in charge of such areas, his mind once more drifted to the why behind his actions. Yes, by now he figured it was the bond in some way, but it was still plenty odd. Maybe what was going on was in the research from Severus. As this was so odd and strange for him, he wanted to know. Once he did, he would sort it accordingly and deal.As he spoke to the elf, laying out what he wanted, he began to list what he wanted the creatures to not only prepare, but pick up for them. Oh yes, Sirius would adore what he planned. Harry would as well was his thought. As long as they did, it was all that mattered to him.
“I’m cleared, completely,” Sirius told Harry with a grin so big it made his face ache. He then shifted the paper he was reading over so his godson could see it. “And there are reparations in my vault for it. A massive amount. I’m sure that number actually caused physical pain for someone to clear.”
“Brilliant!” Harry nodded, grinning himself as he read what was there. “About time!”“Don’t know how you managed this one, but thanks,” Sirius told Tom, though he didn’t like the idea of thanking the git for anything. As this probably took plenty of work and leverage to manage, he would though. It wasn’t anything he could have accomplished on his own.“You’re welcome,” Tom told him, looking plenty smug. And there was a warm feeling in his chest, one which made him feel great. It wasn’t something he had felt before because of so much, so it was startling, but he liked it.“Now, there are some areas I do need to cover,” Tom told them, straightening up after a sip of his tea. “First, it was done with the help of a Solicitor which took on your case. Nothing to concern yourself with. He knows who I am and the why behind it. If we have issues, it’ll be him I go to from now on.”“How can you manage to hire me a Solicitor?” Sirius asked, puzzled and not liking the idea at all.“The bond,” Tom told him simply. “It puts the three of us on equal footing with plenty.” Then he explained the bit with the vaults. “When things settle a bit, we’ll work from there if you need him. For now, I’ll take on whatever.” Then he produced the official withdrawal letter that had Harry out of Hogwarts. When he passed it over, he explained, “This wasn’t my doing. Whatever happened with the bond triggered it automatically. And everything is obscured on it, such as our names as the bondmates. Again, not my doing. Which tells me there is more to this bond than what we know.”After Sirius took the papers and looked them over, he passed them to Harry with a shake of his head. “Any other areas out there this triggered?” As he asked, his stomach sank a little since it meant there were less ways for anyone to find them. Though he wasn’t pondering a rescue of any kind as they couldn’t leave the git, help in plenty of areas was needed, dammit!“The only other thing we could find was the Trace on Harry,” Tom told him, relaxing the best he could. Black wasn’t happy with some of this, something easily readable on his face, but he wasn’t letting it bother him, much anyway. There was a niggling there, a small frisson of something which made him uncomfortable, but he could push it aside. Before they could ask, he explained, “The Trace is gone, like it would end up for anyone bonded. Again, it was automatically triggered. I assumed as much since there was no notice from the Ministry from Harry doing magic. It was just something the Solicitor had as he’s taking on matters with this.”“Understood,” Sirius nodded with a sigh in his voice. Though he realistically knew it was, it was one less way to get help. “Can I ask the name of our Solicitor?” It was something he figured he wouldn’t get, but wanted it out there. Nothing like feeling helpless as someone else tended to whatever the way the evil arse wanted it.“Mackelson,” Tom told him, eyes widening as it came out as he sure as hell hadn’t planned to say a damned name. “He will only handle areas dealing with the Ministry and whatnot, not my agenda, when it comes to both of you.” Oh yes, after he finished here, he was fully planning to go read what Severus produced to figure out where this was coming from.Sirius sure as hell filed that name away to check into it and see what he could manage. While it might end up fruitless, he was going to try. Any little bit of help they could get he would use. “I don’t suppose I thought we might need one.”“We do, for plenty,” Tom told him, still highly troubled by some of this. “There are areas we need to tend to and the goblins have to handle with the vaults, properties and whatnot. I had him check and found out your names are added to the title of this house. I assume mine has been added to Grimmauld Place as well. As those are private, because of the protections, it’s not a troublesome area. It means this goes deeper than just a bonding, Sirius.”“More I didn’t think of,” Sirius groaned, hoping like hell the Order was out of Grimmauld Place. Though not sure, he thought a name being added to the title would give away the secret. What the Order didn’t need was the evil arse popping into the house! Yeah, it wouldn’t help shit.“This bond is triggering more than the standard,” Tom told him with a shake of his head. “As it is, and protection is needed, we may need help. He’s digging to see what else it might have done without us knowing. It’s not something I can do alone or even tend to at all because of so much. I’d prefer we know without ending up blindsided or putting us in a position which can backfire on us.” Again, this wasn’t normal as he never explained anything. Yes, he was looking into what Severus found, fast. “We need protection. Bluntly. You’re cleared, yes, but if it comes to a problem with me, we have no idea what it could do to both of you.”“Didn’t think of that either,” Sirius grumbled, smoothing down his whiskers. With all they were dealing with, he most certainly didn’t want them blindsided.Tom decided that was enough of that topic as he didn’t want to give up more than he planned. Smirk returning, he said, smoothly, “Prepare for tea at the normal time, though we’ll be dining in the formal dining room tonight.” Before the two could ask, he told them, “I’ve planned a feast of epic proportions to celebrate you being cleared. It’s far better than anything Hogwarts ever had, including champagne and plenty of other foods worthy of such a celebration.”“Won’t grouse about that,” Sirius grinned, arm slipping around Harry and pulling him close. “Wanted to anyway.”“I remember you mentioning it, so I took it upon myself to plan for it. The elves already have instructions about what to do,” Tom told him with a nod, that good feeling returning at Sirius being pleased. While it troubled him, he liked it just the same. He'd never had anyone in his life who he could please like this and responded. It was still new and something he did like, despite how odd it was.“We’ll enjoy it,” Harry nodded, smiling bigger than he had for a while now. Knowing Sirius was cleared made him happy. It was about time!“Anything else we need to know?” Sirius asked, wondering about so much. As he didn’t have a way to get answers, he would have to ask. Soon he’d figure out something, such as snooping, but it wasn’t wise right now. He was sure the arse had the elves watching them and didn’t want to chance getting caught.“Just that I filed a formal protest over the fiddling and to let it be known we don’t want a deal with Draco,” Tom said. Though Black nodded, seeming to understand what it was, Harry looked confused, glancing at Sirius. “I’ll let Sirius explain it to you, Harry. Like always, it’s anonymous when it comes to the names, but will read it’s from the harmed parties. It won’t expose us.”“Nothing to worry about, though it’s complicated,” Sirius told Harry. “I’ll explain it all later. It can only help and is standard.”“Right,” Harry nodded, pleased Sirius seemed to know what it was.“Nothing more to concern yourself with,” Tom told them. He then downed his tea and stood, planning to tend to some of what else he picked up before focusing on what Severus delivered. “If you need anything, send an elf,” he told the two then swept out.“Arse,” Sirius muttered, though grinned as he once more glanced at the pardon papers. “Right, Harry, we’re celebrating all day. Don’t care. Plan to stay awake as I drag you all over. First, I might just have to streak through the house dancing and waving the paper about. Then we’re going to muck about on the brooms for a bit. After that—not sure, but we’re going to have as much fun as I can plan for before the feast.”“Not sure about the streaking there, Sirius,” Harry chuckled, though flushed a bit at the memory of that—whatever. “Why don’t we just go start with the brooms and go from there. Maybe more croquet or something. We’ll have fun.”“True, we will,” Sirius admitted with a huge grin. “Not the stuff of celebrations, but we’ll find a way. Maybe fireworks tonight, if we can get our hands on some.”“I have a few Fred and George made up,” Harry said, nudging Sirius. “You know the ones. I’m sure we can duplicate those and do something.”“Plan on it,” Sirius grinned. He then leaned over and kissed Harry on the side of the head. “We’ll find a way. Even if it’s something that pisses the arse off. Let’s see what comes.” Then he straightened up and said, “Let’s do the brooms first then go from there. We have a full day ahead of us, so let’s have some fun.”“We will,” Harry agreed, straightening up himself, looking forward to this.
Nagini was lounging on Tom’s shoulders, content, when he stood and grabbed the broom. Since Harry and Sirius were having fun, she had come in to spend time with Tom and talk to him. She also gave Tom a progress report on Harry, something he wanted. This wasn’t something she had seen from him before and knew he didn’t have a broom, so she asked, “What are we doing, Tom?”
“I’m going to join them,” Tom told his familiar. While he planned to, as the pull was there like it was the day before to just go watch what they were doing, he was still uncomfortable with it.“Oh, I’m quite sure they’ll enjoy having a third player,” she told him, slightly enthused, giving him a soft squeeze. “And you will as well. Yes, this is good.”“We’ll enjoy ourselves, though I’m a tad rusty,” Tom admitted as he made his way out to the makeshift Quidditch pitch. “I’ll soon be up to what I was in school and give them a run for their money.”“This is good,” Nagini told him, happy with the turn of events. The way she saw it, the two were making her Tom happy, something he hadn’t had before and he was trying with them. In the end, they would be good for each other. As they walked, she filled him in on what the two planned for the day, including the fireworks. Tom liked hearing such information, so she would give it to him. Besides, it wasn’t anything personal and she thought he might like it.While he made his way out of the house, Tom listened to her, nodding. He did like the idea of the fireworks and thought he could get his hands on some and make it a proper show. All he would have to do was adjust the wards a tad so they didn’t show. Yes, this was good. He was—well, he was happy. Though he didn’t know why, he was. Assuming it was more with the bond, he didn’t think too much of it and went with the feeling. It was something he would sort out later as he read what Severus sent.
After tea, something which was magnificent as far as Harry and Sirius were concerned, the three were seated outside watching the fireworks display the elves set up. Oh, they had used the ones Harry had, but Tom had procured more of them. This was the sort of display you only saw on huge occasions. Sirius adored it, grinning as he watched them go off and interact. Yeah, this was good and the sort of celebration he wouldn’t have any other way.
Arm slipping around Harry’s shoulder, he held him close, head leaning against his godson. They were all still sipping at the magnificent champagne provided, even Harry. While they weren’t overindulging, it went along with the atmosphere. For the first time since the nightmare with the bond started, Sirius had a wonderful day, as did Harry. It was odd, but he liked it. When Tom had come out to join them for the Quidditch game, they had thought it strange, but went with it. Though they didn’t think it would end up fun with him around, it was. At first the git had problems with the broom as you could tell he hadn’t ridden in a while. Once he shook the rustiness off, he was a serious challenge to play against, something which made the game all the more fun for them. In fact, the three of them had played until lunch then they ate outside together, just talking. Some of it was ‘business’ related, like setting up for school and the like, other parts weren’t, like him joining in the standard conversation with the two. Sirius thought it would have ended up uncomfortable, but it hadn’t.After lunch, they had played croquet. Tom had joined them again. Though Sirius thought this odd, he didn’t say a word. It was—he didn’t know. There was something odd happening with it as he felt good when Tom was around and it wasn’t like the normal. As they talked and played, there was a feeling he liked. Even Harry seemed better. Yeah, this was something they were going to have to talk out to an extent. He just wasn’t sure when or how to bring it up. If it was only affecting him and Harry, he didn’t want to give the arse a head’s up.Tom left when they finished the game, a couple hours before tea. He and Harry had taken a nap after that. Of course, he assumed the arse had whatever to take care of and did. Either way, it was a nice day he liked. Then came tea. While the meal itself was great, there was more. Tom had come up with some minor presents for it. Nothing outlandish or fancy, but items like new clothes and some sweets. Either way, it was nice. They had talked through the meal again. Once more, it was the neutral sort of topics and discussing with Harry what he wanted to do with school. With all the stress they had been dealing with, this was a nice way to reset plenty. Now they were out here, just enjoying. Nagini was lounging on Harry’s shoulders as they watched. While this wasn’t how he wanted his life to go, it was nice to have the weight of his wanted status gone and to just be outside relaxing with Harry by his side. Yes, it was good.Head resting against Harry’s, eyes locked on the display, Sirius smiled. He wanted this to last for some time.
“He’s cleared,” Kingsley told Albus after taking a seat in front of his desk with a tired groan, tossing a copy of the pardon papers on his desk. “And he ended up with a huge settlement, one bigger than anything the Ministry has paid out before. Which tells all of us a Solicitor was involved in this somewhere.”
“It’s good he’s cleared and can only help,” Albus nodded as he read through what was there, one hand stroking his beard as he did. “Sirius may need it to use as leverage in what’s going on.”“Our thoughts,” Tonks told him with a nod of her head. “Takes some heat off.”“They don’t have any clue where he is, do they?” The aging Headmaster asked, glancing between the two after he finished reading.“None,” Kingsley admitted with a shake of his head. “This was all automated with spells. They know the papers reached the right hands and the reparations went into his vaults, but that’s all. The official public announcement will come tomorrow. Since it went as planned, they aren’t going to hunt for him and won’t ask questions. We have no way of tracing it either, as you know.”“I had hoped there was,” Albus admitted with a tired sigh, looking weary. “At least through the Solicitor.”“His name isn’t attached. Not odd there as it’s not a criminal matter or went in front of the panel. It was all handled behind the scenes,” Tonks shrugged, knowing nothing could help them.“Severus passed on our research this morning. My hope is Sirius can get his hands on it at some point so it can help them.” Albus told them, leaning back with a tired groan. “He can put a leash on plenty if he does. We need him to. My sources tell me Tom is still sticking to plenty of plans and pushing forward. I doubt Sirius knows what he can do.”“And You-Know-Who isn’t about to let Sirius know what he can do either,” Tonks added softly. “If they are at loggerheads, I’m sure Sirius and Harry are having a hard time.”“I’m not sure they are or can be,” Albus admitted. “Some of what we found tells us the bond won’t allow it. There’ll be give in plenty. I’m sure Sirius has his foot down in plenty and is helping, but keeping himself and Harry safest is most assuredly his priority. We just need him to find out what kind of power he has in this to effect a change we need.”“Short of getting it into the paper where he can read it, we have no chance of helping,” Kingsley shrugged.“The paper might not be a bad idea,” Albus mused, stroking his beard as he thought it over. “Let me see what I can manage. If it’s out there, it might help.” He had a few contacts who were covering the story. A detailed rundown of what the bond could do might make it into them. Yes, this might work. Anything to put a leash on Tom.Though he listened to what else the two had to say on plenty, his mind was now on what he was planning. Putting the information out there might be the way to give Sirius the means to help all of them. At least it was the best chance they had. Because there just wasn’t much else to help anymore. Tom could take what he wanted and he doubted there was now anything that could stop him. Their only hope might be Sirius.
