Chapter 19
"I'm being silly," Hermione pouted, burying her face into the pillow. "I don't know why I thought he was going to propose."
Angeline and Ginny exchanged looks. Truth be told, Percy was supposed to propose that night. He had told George and Harry that that was the plan. And then the next evening Hermione had Flooed them in a fit of hysterics. Confused, both girls had rushed over to comfort their friend.
"The scene was perfect. We were dressed nicely, at a fancy Italian restaurant, and he was even acting a little off." She bit her lip as the tears began to fall once more. "I just thought he was going to do it. I was so excited getting ready thinking that this was going to be a big night."
Angelina bit her lip. Tentatively, she reached out and rubbed Hermione's back.
"I feel so stupid!" Hermione sobbed. "I thought he really loved me, you know?"
"He does love you!" Ginny exclaimed. "Trust me, I've known Percy all my life and I've never seen him so… passionate about anything. He loves you so much, Hermione. You can just see it in his eyes."
"Then why hasn't he proposed?" Hermione challenged. She blew her nose in a tissue. "Does he not want to make our situation permanent? Is he afraid to really commit to me and the baby?"
"Maybe that's just it," Angelina gently said. "Maybe he loves you so much that he's waiting."
Hermione was quiet for a moment. It seemed in her hormonal mood swing she hadn't stopped to consider the possibility that Percy was waiting.
"But why wait? I mean, they're already having a baby and they live together," Ginny asked, looking confused.
"Because he wants to show Hermione that he's with her because she's her… not for the baby. Maybe he wants to wait for the baby to be older so it doesn't look like they simply married because she's pregnant," Angelina explained.
Hermione let Angelina's words sink in. They made sense and she immediately felt embarrassed. "You're right, Angelina." She sighed. "I'm sorry for calling you both over here in my state of hysterics."
Angelina smiled. "It's all right, Hermione. Neither of us mind."
Ginny nodded in agreement. "We're here for you, you know that, Hermione."
"Thank you both so much." Hermione hugged each girl in return. "I would have gone insane without you both."
"Well, that's what friends are for," Angelina said. "Now, why don't we go get our nails done? That always makes me feel better."
Hermione nodded. She needed a girl's day.
After work, Percy had meet Harry and George at the Leaky Cauldron. He found them sitting in the corner. "Hello," he said glumly as he took his seat.
"Well?" George demanded as soon as Percy sat down.
Percy sighed. "I couldn't do it."
"Why not? After all the planning, how in Merlin's name could you chicken out?" George asked.
"I panicked!" Percy practically shouted. "She looked so beautiful and I just..." Percy fell silent.
"And?" Harry pressed.
Percy looked down at his butterbeer. "I don't deserve her."
Harry arched his eyebrow. "What?"
"Excuse me? What the hell do you mean by that?" George pressed.
"She's just so beautiful and good… she deserves someone better than me," Percy said dejectedly.
Harry sighed. "Percy, that's a load of shite. Hermione loves you and she wants you… why would you think something different?"
"I don't know," he mumbled glumly. He felt so ashamed of himself in that moment.
"It's all right," Harry assured him. "You'll have plenty of time in the future to make up for it."
"But what if she says no? I'm afraid the baby influences our relationship too much. What if she's only with me because of the baby? What if she's only with me because my git of a brother kicked her out?"
The figure in the corner drunkenly grinned. "Interesting," he growled before Disapparating with a pop.
Hermione sat down on the couch and admired her new nails. Angelina and Ginny had just Flooed home and Percy was due back at any moment. So in the meantime, perhaps she'd take a nap and relax. She closed her eyes.
A loud knocking on the door interrupted her thoughts of sleep. Wondering who it was, she stood. The knocking continued.
"Coming!" she shouted. Making her way to the door, she opened it a smidge. "Ron," she muttered in disbelief.
He pushed the door open all the way and stepped in.
Hermione stumbled back a step, cringing from the smell of liquor radiating off of him. He looked as if he hadn't showered in days… smelt like it too.
"Ron, what are you doing here?" she nervously asked him.
"Why are you with him?"
"What?" she asked, momentarily dumbfounded. That certainly wasn't what she expected him to say.
"Why are you with Percy? You should be with me."
Hermione shook her head. "Ron, you're not making any sense. Besides, you're the one who kicked me out, remember?"
Ron took a step forward. "Why did you sleep with him and not me? Did he pay you? Is that what it was?" he shouted angrily.
"What!" Hermione flushed angrily. "How dare you say such a thing! Get out!"
"No, not before I say what-"
"Get out!" Hermione repeated, moving to draw her wand.
"No!" Ron lunged at her, knocking her back into the wall. She heard her wand fall out of her hand and clatter to the floor.
"Get out," she managed to shout, pressing him away. He pressed up against her, crushing her into the wall.
"I love you, Hermione, but why did you cheat on me?" Ron asked, his face centimeters from hers.
She cringed at the smell of alcohol. Bile rose up in her throat.
"Why did you cheat on me?" he shouted into her face.
Hermione let out a strangled sob. "I never meant too. I was drunk, Ron, it was an accident." She turned her head, unable to look at him any longer. "Get out, you're hurting me," she tried to push him off her but couldn't.
"You never meant to sleep with him?"
She shook her head. "No, Ron."
Ron stared at her numbly for a moment before smashing his lips to hers. Hermione was frozen for a moment before she managed to push him off of her.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" she shouted at him.
"I love you, Hermione, and I never stopped," he mumbled before kissing her again. "We can be together… just you and me." He pinned her arms so she couldn't push him away. "Get rid of the baby once it's born… we'll be happy." He pulled back slightly to look at her.
Hermione, horrified by what was happening, finally saw an opening. When Ron pulled away slightly, she slammed her forehead into hers, effectively head-butting him.
"What the hell!" he cried, stumbling back a step.
At that moment, Percy came through the doorway. He took in Hermione's frightened expression and immediately raised his wand.
"Petrificus Totalus!" he shouted, binding Ron effectively on the floor. He rushed over to Hermione. "Are you all right?"
She let out a sob and threw her arms around him.
"Did he hurt you?" Percy asked, tightening his grip on her.
"Not really," she mumbled, burying her face into his chest. "He kissed me… the things he was saying…"
Percy held her as she cried. "Shhh, it's okay. You're okay, Hermione."
Hermione nodded, but she couldn't stop the tears.
Percy conjured his Patronus. When his fox didn't appear, confusion filled his expression.
"What?" Hermione managed to ask.
"My patronus has changed," Percy whispered, watching as the silver mist took the form of an otter.
Hermione managed to smile despite herself. "Just like mine," she whispered.
Percy felt himself grow weak at the knees. He managed to clear his throat, holding back the tears. "Harry, come now. Ron's broken in." The otter swam in a circle before disappearing.
"Percy," Hermione whispered worriedly.
"What?" He turned back to face her.
"Something's wrong," she mumbled, rubbing her stomach. "I need to go to St. Mungo's."
