Chapter 19
Sirius was both excited and stressed out at the same time. He travelled with his son to St. Mungo’s for the ritual that would allow Orion regain his real appearance, but the older Black knew very well how dangerous that could turn out. All the way through the corridors of the hospital he tried to keep up straight face and every now and then smiled reassuringly to his son. Thankfully, Orion seemed rather calm about the entire situation.
When the two of them finally reached the fourth floor they were met by a few Ministry officials and Halers who instructed them that Orion will be placed in a separate room in the closed ward, in order to give him and his family as much privacy and peace as possible. To Sirius that sounded very reasonable and he even started to calm down a bit more until they entered the room in which his son was supposed to spend the next few days. Inside, with a small group of Healers waited his cousin, Andromeda. Sirius liked her when they were younger and he admired her for following her heart and marrying a Muggleborn, but now he wasn’t sure if it was better or worse that she was going to participate in this ritual. Amdromeda would never hurt his son; that he was certain of. However she supported Dumbledore and the light side. Sirius didn’t know what to expect from her, when she finds out that Albus meddled with Orion’s blood and magic; what will happen when she notices the teen’s resemblance to Severus.
For the next ten or so minutes both Ministry officials and Andromeda were explaining the procedures, but neither Sirius nor Orion were paying much attention. When that part was finally over, everyone left the room apart from the Blacks and Andromeda.
“Sirius…we finally see each other again,” started the witch, emotion clear in her voice. “I wanted to join Nymphadora on one of Albus’ meetings to see you, but…oh, how I missed my favourite cousin.”
“And yet, no one tried to help me get out of Azkaban,” interrupted Sirius seeing that the witch moved closer and tried to embrace him.
“I really regret not doing anything, but I can’t turn back time. No one knew what to do, Sirius. But believe me…it hurt and it still does to see my closest family in Azkaban,” Andromeda tried explaining. “I was cut off from everyone in the family, I couldn’t do anything…I didn’t even know you have a child. Sirius, please…I want to make things right. Just like you, I want my family back. I will never hurt my family…no matter what.”
The wizards exchanged looks and silently agreed to give the woman a chance; they both knew that sooner or later she would discover Dumbledore’s involvement in this mess and they would be there to push her in the right direction; if Andromeda turned against Albus, their family would benefit a lot.
“I don’t know, Andromeda. It seems to me that everyone I knew, everything I believed in turns out to be other than I thought,” said Sirius playing out his role perfectly. “I need time to trust people again, but you doing everything that’s possible to keep my son safe and alive would definitely be a good start.”
The witch smiled heartily seeing at least some hope to get her cousin’s trust back. Not wanting to continue the sensitive topic of the last wizarding war, she kindly explained once more the procedures of the ritual – how Orion would get some strengthening potions, then dreamless sleep potion and then some secret potion from the Department of Mysteries; according to Andromeda that was the most dangerous part of the ritual. That potion would go directly into his blood and fight off all the foreign magic that got into his body, which was supposed to be extremely painful. If that wasn’t enough, after disposing of all the unwanted magic in him, his own blood and magic would work hard to reconstruct his real looks, which was compared to getting rid of all of his bones and growing them back.
“This is just the strengthening potion, dear,” said Andromeda and handed a glass of disgusting potion to the teen. “Drink it now and then we’re going to start the ritual in about two hours. I’m going to leave you for now…I’m sure you want to spend this time together, without any Healers around.”
“She doesn’t seem like a bad person,” noticed Orion when the witch left the room.
“No, she’s not. She’s actually really sweet, but I can’t make any mistakes. I promised myself that I won’t lose you ever again. That’s why I’m going to be extra careful, especially with anyone who supports Albus,” announced seriously the older Black, which made the teen fight back a laugh.
“It’s actually really nice to finally have someone who cares and is protective of me,” said the boy still smiling at his father’s behaviour.
“You know, I’m not the only one who’s protective of you,” Sirius smirked and winked to his son. For once, there was Severus, who honestly loved Orion very much; but there was also Draco, who seemed to have started developing feelings deeper than one has towards a cousin.
There was a long, awkward silence and Sirius was starting to think that maybe this whole time the teen was just hiding his nervousness; perhaps he was scared of the ritual and the realisation just struck him.
“What’s wrong, son? Everything is going to be fine. I’ll be here with you all the time,” assured him the older wizard.
“It’s not that,” answered the teen. “I feel a bit sorry for…you know. He seemed to be worried about this ritual too. But contrary to you, he can’t be here.”
Older Black smiled sincerely and wrapped and arm around Orion’s shoulders. Even though the teen didn’t say straight forward who he had in mind, but Sirius knew he was talking about Severus. It seemed that the boy was still having some reservations towards the potion’s master, especially in terms of calling him ‘father’, but recently relation between those two have improved greatly.
“If you only want him to be here, I’m sure he’d do anything it takes to be by your side now,” said Sirius not able to contain his joy of the fact that his husband and son were finally getting closer to each other.
“No, he can’t do that,” protested Orion, surprising the other wizard with such a reaction. “I don’t want to be mean to him…it’s just that…first of all, he shouldn’t be seen here. That would be too suspicious at the moment. Also…I didn’t tell you this before, but now after the extra lessons he’s been giving me and all that time we spent together I can see he’s not a bad person. Actually, he’s really brilliant in what he’s doing and…I feel this need to impress him.”
“Awww,…” Sirius was about to make a teasing comment, but Orion sent a death glare his way. “Watch out young man, I’m your dad so don’t give me that look,” the wizard couldn’t help but tease the teen a bit. “But seriously, I’m very happy to see you two getting along. I know he’d be overjoyed if you told him what you just told me.”
“That’s my problem, dad. I want to treat him the way he deserves…the way I treat you, but at this moment I still can’t picture myself being completely fine and open about our true relation,” Orion sighed heavily; he himself didn’t understand why it took him so long to just get over the past and officially accept Severus as his father. “But I’ll get there eventually…after all, I want to have a complete family.”
The next hour and a half they sat in the room preparing for the ritual. In order to keep the teen’s mind off of the dangerous things awaiting him the next few days, they kept discussing all the plans for winter break, moving in together, maybe visiting Edinburgh too – all the things Orion couldn’t even think about when he was living with the Dursleys.
When the door to the room opened, Andromeda walked inside. She was accompanied by a group of Healers and Ministry officials from before. “I’m afraid it’s time,” announced the witch with an apologetic look on her face.
“From this moment on, I’m not going to leave you until you wake up,” assured Sirius when the Healers handed a glass of Dreamless Sleep Potion to his son.
“See you in a few days then, dad,” the teen smiled and drank the potion. It didn’t take long for the liquid to take effect. His eyelids became heavy and he gently fell on the mattress.
Albus silently walked down the corridor and smiling to every student and teacher passing by. No one would ever guess something was wrong with the peaceful Headmaster. However on the inside, the old wizard was furious. Just few minutes ago he returned from his trip to France, Belgium and Germany. The reason for his travel was searching support from big wizarding families from those countries.
Dumbledore hoped at least some of them would support their cause and agree to fight with Voldemort and Death Eaters if the time comes, but so far his negotiations with those wizards were unsuccessful. Only some small groups of halfblood and Muggleborn wizards from Europe agreed to help the Order of the Phoenix in their fight against the Dark Lord. Unfortunately, almost none of the most powerful and pureblood wizarding families agreed to support them. What Albus feared the most was that they were outnumbered. It wasn’t only about people fighting alongside with them; what the Headmaster truly needed was witches and wizards who would support his vision of wizarding world after the war – he wanted to completely ban dark magic, even if it meant isolating all the magical creatures and magical beings considered having dark nature; he believed integration of wizarding and Muggle world was needed; but also he was convinced pureblood families had to be forced to share their magical abilities with other witches and wizards, instead of keeping it secret from everyone outside of their families.
“Having a bad day, Albus?” asked smirking Phinneas Black from his portrait. “You look overworked.”
Dumbledore only grumbled something incomprehensibly and ignored the ex-headmaster. For some reason, old Black was taking great pleasure in torturing Albus with his sarcastic comments. Such behaviour summed up with what Sirius was doing, made Dumbledore only hate the Blacks even more; they were messing up all his plans.
“Or maybe not…” Albus said quietly to himself when an idea came to his mind.
Feeling hope growing inside him, he walked over to his private chamber so that none of the headmasters’ portraits could spy on him. The old wizard searched his drawers for something and finally took out an old, ruined notebook – Tom Riddle’s diary; the very same diary that was destroyed in the Chamber of Secrets few years ago. Ever since that time Albus suspected there was something dark and complex. Dumbledore has been researching the mystery of that object and by now, he was almost absolutely sure that the diary was a horcrux.
“Tom must have made more of those,” the man said to himself and making plans already in his head. Moments later, everything fell in place and another secret plan of his was ready. He smirked while thinking how devastated Voldemort would be when he finds out that Albus discovered his secret to almost eternal life. “Time to find and destroy some horcruxes.”
Narcissa Malfoy wasn’t a very frequent visitor at St. Mungo’s, because she disliked the place greatly. However, no one was going to stop her from supporting her cousin, especially now that young Orion was going through such a difficult ritual. She was worried sick about the teen, whom she really grew to like a lot during this last year. It was no secret that getting rid of someone else’s influence in one’s blood and magic was extremely dangerous and rare. At least two out of ten people undergoing this ritual didn’t survive it.
It’s been already five days since Orion went to St. Mungo’s, but so far Narcissa hasn’t received any bad news from her cousin. That filled her with hope that everything would turn out well. However she felt the need to be there by Sirius’ side; she knew she’d be grateful for such gesture if it was Draco in the hospital.
“Mum! This is horrible! Can’t they do something?!” Mrs Malfoy heard frightened female voice coming from the direction of Orion’s room. Hearing that made Narcissa worried again and she quickly marched to see what was going on.
At the end of the corridor she spotted a group of red haired teens accompanied by their mother. They were all waiting outside the room, but they could see what was going on inside through a glass screen in the wall. Immediately when the Weasleys spotted her, they all started sending odd looks her way, as if she wasn’t welcomed there. Narcissa had to fight the urge to snort at such behaviour; she decided to completely ignore them and looked through the glass screen.
No wonder the teens were horrified to see their friend in such a state. Orion’s arms and legs were strapped onto the bed so that he didn’t do anything to himself whenever a wave of pain struck. He was in convulsions and screaming in pain really loud. Narcissa was surprised that the straps didn’t snap due to the strength Orion was showing. Her gaze landed on Sirius, who looked beyond worried while at the same time trying to keep his son in place on the bed, so that he didn’t hurt himself.
“No one is allowed inside,” informed her sternly Molly Weasley. The plump witch looked like she was holding back too not to run inside to help the teen.
Mrs Malfoy looked at the other woman with ice cold eyes and said, “They are my family. But by all means, stop me,” without waiting for an answer she entered the room and joined Sirius by Orion’s bed.
Minutes were passing by and Orion was slowly calming down; his breathing slowed down and after another few minutes his body stopped wriggling on the bed. With a sigh of relief, Sirius noted that another pain attack has passed and now his son was sleeping soundly. Neither him nor Narcissa noticed when Andromeda entered the room and started checking the teen’s state.
“Wonderful news,” announced Andromeda smiling brightly to her sister and cousin. Even though she was obviously happy with the news she had, one could also see she was tired from the stress of leading such an important ritual on her family member. Andromeda briefly looked at her younger sister, who was still slightly annoyed to be in the same room with her, and then looked at Sirius. “It seems this was the last of those attacks. The potion successfully eliminated the foreign magical influence. Now we only have to wait for his genes to work their magic again until he regains his real looks.”
“Thank Merlin!” Sirius started laughing hysterically hearing the news. He was happy that this madness was over; the worst part has come to an end. Black realised only now how tired from lack of sleep and all the stress he was, but still, nothing would force him to leave his son’s side.
A sudden knock on the glass screen and muffled noises caught their attention. Only now did Sirius notice that Orion’s friends and Mrs Weasley were standing there completely horrified. “Don’t worry, I’ll go talk with them. They were worried about Orion,” said quickly Andromeda and left the room.
“Why are they here anyway?” asked Sirius a bit angry. His frustration wasn’t exactly directed at the Weasley family, but after seeing how much Orion had to suffer the last few days because of Dumbledore, Sirius was now mad at everyone who supported the old fool.
“I suspect that Draco might have told them a word or two about how awful this ritual is, which probably scared them or maybe they were jealous that Draco could visit Orion and they couldn’t,” answered calmly Narcissa, but she couldn’t help a small smirk growing on her lips. “He might have even mentioned something about taking long and painful revenge on the person who put that glamour on Orion.”
“What a wonderful and carrying cousin,” commented Sirius smirking at Narcissa.
“Oh thank Merlin! You see it too, that something is going on between them,” laughed Mrs Malfoy. “I was starting to think I’m the only one who sees it that they became very close.”
“One has to be blind not to notice it,” said Sirius and looked through the glass screen, where Andromeda was calming down the Weasleys and most likely telling them to return to Hogwarts. Black quickly became serious again and said, “But first things first. Now the danger in Hogwarts will only grow…and not only there. We all have to be very careful who we decide to trust. But we also need more people on our side, Narcissa.”
“I know what you’re trying to say, Sirius,” interrupted him the witch. “But you don’t trust Andromeda either. Her husband and daughter are blindly following Albus, which means she will do the same.”
“Soon she will see Albus’ true colours, just like I did,” said Sirius in a hushed voice. He then pointed to the small bottle standing next to Orion’s bed; inside was some lightly glowing substance that Andromeda eliminated from the teens blood – evidence of someone’s magical signature and also a proof of Dumbeldore’s crime. “When she discovers who’s magic was messing up with my son, she will turn against the Order. Besides, Nymphadora already started questioning Albus; the same goes for Remus. I’m telling you, Cissa, war is coming again…but we’re not going to lose it this time.”
First days of December went by rather fast. Most of the students in Hogwarts couldn’t wait for the winter break to start, but there were also others, like Hermione, who had the opinion the time was flying by too fast and there wasn’t enough time to study for OWLs. However that wasn’t Hermione’s only problem.
This morning professor Dumbledore called her and all the Weasleys to his office to ask them to spend winter break at Grimmauld Place. The redheads were all excited to spend all that time with their friend, especially after everything they saw him go through at St. Mungo’s. Another matter was that Ron was thrilled to shove it in Malfoy’s face that they were going to enjoy young Black’s presence for two weeks and Draco wouldn’t be even welcomed at Grimmauld Place.
“What’s wrong, ‘Mione? It’s going to be awesome!” Ron couldn’t contain his happiness. “Don’t tell me you’re worried about the exams!”
“OWLs are very important, Ronald!” protested Hermione, but shortly after that she sighed heavily and sat on a bench in an empty corridor. “But that’s not the only problem.”
“Then what’s wrong?” asked the wizard sitting next to her and looking genuinely concerned about her.
The girl was quiet for a longer while; she debated with herself if she should tell him what was on her mind or not, but eventually she decided she needed to talk with someone about it. “You see…I feel bad for how I’ve been treating my parents lately. We hardly ever spend time together, because I’m constantly either studying or doing something professor Dumbledore wants us to do. Don’t get me wrong…I don’t regret doing things for the Order, because it is to keep our friend safe, but…I already promised my parents we’re going to spend winter break together…my mum was really happy about it, because…”
“Because…she misses you?” he tried to help her in her speech. For the first time since they know each other, Ron saw Hermione short on words.
“Yes, she does, but…what I didn’t tell anyone is that…she’s pregnant. I’m going to have a sister sometime around New Year,” the witch finally managed to say what was bothering her.
“Hermione, that’s great news! Why would you be worried about something like that?” he smiled genuinely happy for his friend. He was used to living with many siblings so it was natural for him that one would be happy to have a baby sister, but Hermione didn’t seem happy at all. “’Mione…what’s bothering you? Aren’t you happy?”
“That’s the problem, Ron. I feel bad, because normally I’d be overjoyed to have a sister, but I know that for the last few years I haven’t been a number one daughter; I didn’t even spend much time with my parents so when they told me about the pregnancy I couldn’t help, but feel jealous…as if they were having this baby to replace me,” she buried her face in her hands, feeling ashamed of her feelings. “I know this is ridiculous. They wold never stop loving me, but now that I explained it all to myself and accepted my future sister I promised myself I’ll be a better daughter and spend more time with my family. But now…all those requests from professor Dumbledore. It’s just starting to be a bit too much for me…but on the other hand, I don’t want to choose between my family and my friends.”
The red head didn’t know what to do. He felt helpless and at the same time completely devastated to see Hermione in such a state. If he only knew how to help her, but he was having the same thoughts as her – slowly the amount of secrets and requests from the Order of the Phoenix, and the Headmaster especially, was getting too much. Not to mention that all the spying on their best friend, that Dumbledore wanted them to do, was not only no good, but it only made Harry angry at them even more.
“Don’t worry, ‘Mione. We’ll figure something out,” said Ron and carefully put one arm around her shoulders.
Ever since Orion went to St. Mungo’s for the ritual, Draco was in a very foul mood, to say the least. He was mad at himself that he didn’t get there on time to say good bye to his cousin and because of that he made it a point of honour to himself to practice really hard with his fellow Slytherins, so that they were properly prepared for any fight or attack that might come after Orion comes back in his real body. Malfoy was more than sure that when everyone finally see for their own eyes that there is no Harry Potter anymore, but Orion Black, heir of the Black family, it will spark some conflicts and fights. Not to mention that some students might want to attack his cousin and that he would never allow; for such situations he needed all of his Snakes to be ready to stand in Orion’s defence.
“Malfoy, what’s the plan for today’s practice?” asked Goyle, who surprisingly became very interested in learning new spells; especially if those spells could be used in a battle.
“Today I have something special for you…but also extremely difficult,” said Draco with an evil grin on his face. “We have to wait a bit for our…guest of honour, who will be training with you today, but first…” he reached out his hand to his housemates and said, “First I need each and every one of you to make an Unbreakable Vow not to reveal in any way, anything that will be said in this chamber today.”
“But Draco,” protested Pansy. “We already made a vow to keep these trainings secret. Why do you need us to make an Unbreakable Vow now?”
“Because you all are very valuable to me and the cause I serve. More importantly, in a few days things here in Hogwarts and entire wizarding world will get really heated. That’s why I want you to know the situation, because I want and I need your help. I know you’re ready to do things I expect you to do.”
“Very well put, Mr Malfoy,” said a familiar cold voice.
All of the fifth year Slytherin’s eyes moved to see professor Snape standing in the doorway to the normally abandoned dungeon. Severus bowed his head to them and cast new powerful privacy wards around the chamber. When he was done with that, he walked over to Draco and looked at his students sternly. That was all it took for the Snakes to agree to make the Unbreakable Vow. One by one, Slytherins walked to Malfoy and made the vow.
“Now then,” started Severus. “You all are aware of where your parents’ alliances lie. That’s why you won’t be surprised to know that Mr Malfoy was asked by the Dark Lord himself to train you how to fight, protect yourselves and others.”
“The Dark Lord himself?” gasped shocked Millicent Bulstrode. They all knew that the Malfoy family was loyal to Voldemort, but none of them thought Draco already met the most feared dark wizard of their times.
“Does that mean the Dark Lord has some mission for us?” asked Daphne Greengrass with a bit of hesitation in her voice.
“Don’t worry, it’s nothing drastic nor very difficult, although you might not feel very comfortable with the idea at the beginning,” explained Draco. “By now it’s no secret that there is no Harry Potter…there is Orion Black and he’s my friend, but also my cousin. I know that some of you still feel uncomfortable with that; as well as most of you don’t understand why none of my family members attacked him or how we got away with it when the Dark Lord is back.”
“Your parents did not reveal that secret to you yet, because they wanted to keep you safe,” explained further Severus. “Now however is the time to tell you the truth. The biggest lie of the Ministry and light side is that the Dark Lord tried to kill Harry Potter…or rather Orion Black.”
“But isn’t he Sirius Black’s son? Black supports Dumbledore…he fought against the Dark Lord,” noted Blaise.
“Yes, he is Sirius Black’s son…and yes, Black was blinded by Dumbledore’s visions of new wizarding world. However, what even Dumbledore doesn’t know is that Orion’s other parent is a loyal Death Eater.”
“And that’s the true reason why the Dark Lord went to Godric’s Hollow…to take Orion away from the Potters and take him to his real parents,” interrupted the potions master leaving the teens dumbstruck.
“Professor…does that mean Harry Potter….I mean…Orion Black is secretly supporting the Dark Lord?” asked Pansy and looked from professor Snape to Draco and back again.
“For now I’d say he’s not against the Dark Lord…and he definitely doesn’t support the Order of the Phoenix and Dumbledore anymore,” answered Draco and smiled to himself, remembering how happy he was when Orion told him he chose to support the side that protects his family.
“If that’s true that means he’s a spy for the Dark Lord,” said Theodore Nott. He was a bit surprised that the Golden Boy turned out to be dark wizard supporter, but if he was friends and family with Malfoy, then he didn’t have a reason to doubt it.
“I wouldn’t call him a spy, but he’s definitely a very important person for both dark and light side in the upcoming war,” explained again Draco. “And this is where you all come in. The first reason for our secret trainings was to get your skills better so that you knew how to defend yourselves, which already comes in handy with the ridiculous behaviour from Mad-Eye Moody. The other reason was to form a skilled group of students to watch out Orion’s back, because at some point he will become the target of Dumbledore himself.”
“You want us to protect Potter?” asked shocked Crabbe, but quickly lowered his head when Draco glared at him, “I mean….are we supposed to protect Black?”
“Look at it differently…You’re not going to protect Black, but the only heir of one of the oldest pureblood wizarding families in the country,” Severus tried to use the pureblood excuse.
There was a long silence. Both Snape and Malfoy were observing the faces of the teens before them. It was clear by just one glance that they were calculating what would be best for them, their families. It only made them smile, because Draco and Severus had exactly the same motives – they wanted to do anything it took to protect their family.
“I’ll do it,” Daphne announced first. “I’ll help protecting him…just like he saved my younger sister from Gryffindors during DADA class.”
“He’s a pureblood and I’ll help too with this task,” agreed Nott.
After those two, all others declared their support in the matter; everyone for different reasons, but Draco was certain that with time they’d get to like and befriend Orion just like he did. Now the most important part was that his cousin had more people he could trust.
“Now that we’re done with the formalities, let’s continue with your training,” said Severus and smirked viciously. “You’ve been learning Occlumency the past few months. Today I’m going to test it. Now that you declared to protect Orion Black, your minds will be targeted by Dumbledore and Moody, as well as many others. You have to keep your minds protected. Mr Malfoy…you’re closest with your cousin and that’s why we’re going to start the training with you.”
Albus wrapped his cloak tighter around his body as he apparated in front of a cave he remembered from his visits to young Tom Riddle. He walked inside and took of the hood. It was a nasty night to go travelling around the country looking for Voldemort’s heirlooms, but at least he already had some success.
His first stop was Little Hangleton, where he found ruins of the Gaunt family’s house. Just as he expected, he managed to find the Gaunt’s ring there; an heirloom he remembered Voldemort cherished greatly. Surprisingly, the ring didn’t have any curse cast on it; or at least it didn’t hurt Albus right away, but Dumbledore preferred to be extra careful with the object and immediately stored it safely in his pocket.
Finally getting out of his thoughts, he started examining the cave for another entrance. After a few minutes he was successful and found a way to get through the stone wall and further into the cave. He used all his cunning to get over all the traps set by Tom many years ago for anyone who tried to get to the centre of the cave. This only proved to Albus that Voldemort must have hidden something very important here. When he made it to the small isle in the middle of the lake, he spotted a basin filled with some liquid. He tried all known spells to vanish the suspicious potion, but nothing worked; the liquid reappeared every single time.
“Oh Tom, do you really think I’m going to drink a potion you placed here?” Albus fought back a laugh and stopped his attempts to get rid of the liquid. Instead, he used a different spell; something that allowed him better vision through the fluid. He still needed to narrow his eyes a bit to see the object at the bottom of the basin more clearly, but he could already decipher the shape of it. “Slytherin’s locket? Hmmm…this would hurt Tom…if only I could get my hands on that locket.”
After a few more moments the headmaster took out a small bottle and took a sample of the potion for further examination. “Next time I’m here this locket will be mine.”
A/N: I know this might not have been the most exciting chapter, but I promise more will happen in the next one; which, btw, I already started working on ;) So hopefully, see you soon with Chapter 20 :D
