I’m quite happy you’re looking forward to more.MrsSilverusSnape: More? Happy to.wolfcathope: True about the cliffhangers. I do try to update within a week to two week span between chapters. I’m hoping I was able to explain the court process below in the chapter.nari-chan: I’m not done yet. As for Ginny and Dean, well….have to wait. *wink*jami_lee: I leave ya hanging ‘cause I think I get more reviews this way. HeheheheCDGaymer: Thanks for the love. Glad someone liked the cliffy. LolChaosLady: Thank you. Glad you liked it. Suspense and all. *wink*starr: Yep. Harry does not have it easy.BAFan: We’ll have to wait and see.moodysavage: Hmm…wait and see.cullengal101: Interesting. A different thought on Dean. Hmm. We shall see.min: Thank you, thank you.Author’s Note: So who wants to take a wild guess at what house I may have been sorted in? I think it’s a toss-up between Slytherin and Ravenclaw. Slytherin for those cliffhangers and Ravenclaw for the creative writing.
Chapter NineteenDon’t Poke the Pacing Lion
Severus wasn’t surprised to wake up holding a smaller body in his arms. He was, however, a tad surprised when he opened his eyes to find blonde hair. Most mornings Harry would wake up and go downstairs to make breakfast. This was the first time he had managed to somehow sneak out of bed without one of his lovers snagging him around the waist and pulling him back down.Severus kissed Draco on the top of the head before extracting his limbs. He left the slumbering blonde in favor of pulling on a pair of sleep pants. He wandered downstairs in search of their missing lion. Smelling the sweet aroma of pancakes, Severus headed straight for the kitchen. He frowned when he found only Tippy in the kitchen.“Tippy?”The house elf, having already sensed her master, did not jolt at the call of her name. She turned around on her stool placed in front of the stove to face the wizard.“How can Tippy be helping Master Severus?” Tippy asked.“Do you know the whereabouts of young Harry?” Severus asked.Tippy nodded her head, her ears flapping up and down.“Master Harry be sleeping in the living room.”His frown deepened. He thanked the house elf before turning around and going to the living room. Sure enough, he found the young brunette curled up in the armchair with a large, threadbare blanket wrapped around him. Kasper lay on the ground directly in front of the armchair, but his eyes were open and alert. Severus grew concerned for his young lover as he approached. He knelt down and slid a hand over his cheeks and forehead. No fever. He slipped his hand under the blanket. No chill on the wizard’s arms. This was quite confusing, Severus mused. Carefully maneuvering his arms under Harry, Severus lifted him up into his arms when he stood up.Rather than apparate upstairs and risk waking the young male, Severus carried him. He placed a weightless charm on his lover before ascending the stairs. Severus wondered just how long Harry had been sleeping in the armchair. He hoped the brunette wasn’t coming down with something. Kasper had stood with him and walked beside him up the stairs. When he walked into the master bedroom, Draco was finishing dressing for work. He glanced out the bathroom door when he spotted Severus. He came out when he saw the load his older lover was carrying.“Is he okay?” Draco asked.Severus shrugged as he spelled the sheets back and laid Harry down. Harry snuffled in his sleep, rubbing at his closed eyelids with the hell of his palm. Kasper jumped up to put his upper body on the bed with his head resting on top of Harry’s.“He appears to be fine, but I found him downstairs asleep in the living room,” Severus answered.Draco wanted to find out more, but he was going to be late for work. He felt slightly better when Severus kissed him and promised to keep an eye on Harry. Tybalt came running out of his hiding space from who knows where and climbed up into the hood of Draco’s cloak. Before apparating out, Draco kissed Harry on the cheek and patted Kasper on the head.Severus looked down when he heard Kasper whine. The dog looked up with a hopeful glint in his gaze. Severus instantly picked up the dog’s thought.“No,” he said firmly.Kasper whined while pawing at the covers. Severus crossed his arms over his chest.“No. No animals on the bed. Not even the ferret is allowed on the bed,” Severus informed him.Kasper moved his head about so he could gently nudge at his human. Harry’s hand unconsciously came up to hug the canine close. The canine smiled up at him. Severus let out a big huff.“Fine. But only this one time,” Severus told him.Ducking his head out from under Harry’s arm, Kasper climbed onto the bed and curled up close to the sleeping brunette. Severus threw his arms up as he left the room.“When did I start losing control of my life?”Harry, amazingly, slept until almost noon. Before he began brewing some basic potions for Poppy, Severus had asked Tippy to inform him when Harry woke up. He was surprised by the late hour. He ordered Tippy to ensure Harry ate lunch and then tell him he wanted to see him. Severus left the potions door open so Harry could come in when he was done eating. It wasn’t long until Harry appeared in the doorway. Without looking up from his work, Severus waved him over. Harry left Kasper sitting in the doorway as he entered the potions lab. He stopped short of the cauldron and table so he didn’t disturb Severus’ work. Severus sprinkled in some herbs before stirring clockwise three times. He had reached a stable point in the potion and cast a stasis spell.“Did you get enough rest?” Severus asked, turning to face the shorter brunette.Harry nodded. “Yes.”Severus noticed that Harry wouldn’t meet his gaze. Despite Harry’s knowledge that Severus wouldn’t use magic on him without permission, he wasn’t looking directly at him. This behavior strongly reminded the Potions Master of when Harry had first arrived at the house. It was as if he were hiding something.“Harry?”Only then did Harry lock gazes with him for a brief moment before looking somewhere past his ear.“Is there something on your mind?” Severus asked.Rather than tell his lover the truth, Harry diverted to a different answer.“I was thinking I might go back out in the woods and gather some ingredients for you. Maybe I can come across the unicorns again,” Harry answered.Severus knew good and well that wasn’t what was on Harry’s mind. However, he knew that the Gryffindor sometimes needed his space before he would open up. Instead of calling his lover on his lie, Severus grabbed a parchment and scribbled a short list down. He handed it to Harry who murmured a quiet thank you.Harry felt Severus’ hand curl around the back of his neck and pull him close for a kiss. Feeling the tongue tapping at his lips, Harry opened his mouth and relinquished control. Severus pulled Harry flush up against his body while wrapping his tongue around Harry’s. After a few seconds, Severus pulled back and allowed his young love to lean back. He swiped a thumb over his cool cheek.“When you’re ready to talk, I’m ready to listen,” Severus told him.Harry sighed. His body sagged with relief. Severus hadn’t called him out on the lie, but he let Harry know he knew there was something. Harry nodded to him and showed Severus a small smile when the taller wizard gave him a small peck on the cheek.“Be safe.”“I will.”As Harry gathered some things to help him collect ingredients, Draco was joining Casey for lunch. Casey had closed the shop for lunch and the two cousins were sitting in the back. Draco chuckled as a group of puppies gathered at Casey’s feet and they all begged for some of her lunch.“No. Noooo. My lunch. Not your lunch. My lunch. Shoo with the lot of you,” Casey said, holding her plate up to her face.None of the puppies conceded defeat. In fact, two came forward and put their paws up on her knees. They put the full force of the puppy stare on display. Draco was tempted to slip them something from his own plate.“Oh, for the love of…Pops!”From another room, a great big bloodhound with grey around his face came lumbering by the doorway. Pausing in the open doorway, the bloodhound opened his mouth and let out a big, deep woof. All the puppies slid on the tiled kitchen floor as they scrambled over to the older canine. He started walking away down the hall with the puppies hot on his tail. Their little retriever barks echoed down the hall.Draco chuckled again as Casey placed her plate down on the table.“You won’t find it so funny when Kasper starts begging at every meal for a morsel,” Casey teased.Draco snorted. “I’m not about to spoil that mutt. He can get that from Harry.”Casey grinned. She speared a few pieces of macaroni and shoved them in her mouth. When she was done chewing, she asked about Harry. Draco shrugged.“Severus found him sleeping in the chair in the living room this morning. I’m just hoping he isn’t coming down with something,” Draco commented.“Keep an eye on Kasper. He’ll be able to let you know if Harry isn’t feeling well. It’s all in the body language. If you find him curling up with Harry or staying real close, then chances are Harry isn’t feeling 100%.”Smile. “Thanks for the advice, cousin.”Chuckle. “Anytime, cousin.”/……/
Draco stumbled slightly when coming out of the fireplace. He brushed some soot from his cloak before pulling it off. As he walked out into the entrance hall, he laid his cloak on the coat rack. He rolled his sleeves up to his elbow on his way to the potions lab. The doorway was open, but he still knocked on the door as fair warning to Severus.
Instead of brewing over a cauldron, Severus was sorting through a collection of ingredients. Stopping beside Severus, Draco glanced around his lover’s arm.“Those look fresh,” Draco commented.“You’re home early.”Without missing a beat, Severus slung his arm around Draco’s waist and pulled him in to kiss his cheek.“Harry picked them earlier from the forest. He takes more care collecting than he does brewing,” Severus remarked.Draco hummed as he leaned on his lover. Draco quietly questioned him about their little lion. Severus told him about sleeping in late and not quite telling him the truth.“Where is he now?” Draco asked.Severus gestured to the ceiling.“He came back a little bit ago with these. I think he said something about being in the library,” Severus replied.Draco shifted his gaze heavenward. He pulled out of his lover’s embrace and headed for the door.“I’ll go up and talk to him. See if I can get him to talk,” Draco said out loud, mostly to himself.“Don’t push too hard!” Severus called after him.He expected to find Harry curled in an armchair reading or even perched on a windowsill looking out over the grounds. What he found was Harry weaving aimlessly through the bookshelves. He was only able to spot the brunette because of spotting Kasper’s tail disappear around a corner. Draco walked straight forward to the center, knowing that Harry would come out from the stacks in a minute. As he heard the brunette approaching, he could hear him hissing.Draco shivered. The hissing scared and thrilled him at the same time. He wasn’t sure which feeling was stronger. Harry was looking down, seemingly talking to himself. He was gesturing in front of him while walking. When he came out from between the stacks to cross the room to the other shelves, Harry lifted his head and stopped dead.“You’re…home early.”Draco cracked a huge grin.“Yes. That seems to be the general consensus in this house. What’s going on, little lion? You’re all out of sorts today,” Draco pointed out.Draco was alarmed when Harry turned his head away. He shook his head as he moved to walk around Draco. The blonde’s arm shot out and he caught the brunette by his elbow. Harry cringed away from his touch, causing Draco to release him like he had been burned.“Harry? Talk to me. What’s wrong?” Draco demanded.Harry glanced at him then away, all the while shaking his head.“No. I don’t…want to tell you,” Harry muttered under his breath.Harry started walking away again. That made Draco angry as his youth reared its ugly head. Harry should know by now that he could talk about anything with his two lovers. They weren’t going to cast him away over anything he said.“We know you’re hiding something from us!” Draco exclaimed.Harry’s hands tightened into fists at his sides as he stopped. He slowly turned to half-face his lover. Kasper was whining and nudged him, trying to divert his attention.“Leave it alone! You don’t need to know everything!” Harry snapped, his voice rising.“Stop pushing us away, Harry! We’re here to help you!”Harry felt his temper boiling over. His head lowered down to his chin, his body shaking with rage. Suddenly, his head snapped up and his eyes flashed an eerie, bright amber color.“I said…LEAVE IT ALONE!!”A sudden wave of pure magical energy echoed off Harry and smashed into Draco. The magic ripped him off his feet and flung him through the air. Draco’s back collided roughly with the wall above the fireplace and his body fell. He hit his back on the mantle on his way down before dropping to the ground with a loud groan.Hearing the crack of Draco’s head slamming violently into the wall snapped Harry out of his rage. His bottom lip quivered. Tears spilled down his cheeks. He darted across the library, sliding to his knees when he reached Draco. Cradling the blonde’s head to his chest, Harry lifted Draco up into his arms. A deep sob broke out of him when he moved his hand back from Draco’s head to reveal crimson.“Kas! Kasper, get Severus!” Harry shouted.Harry heard the pop sound of apparation, but it didn’t register in his mind. He clutched Draco to his chest, sobbing “I’m sorry” over and over again. He was still sobbing when Severus arrived. Severus had to coax Harry to let go of Draco so he could look at his injuries properly. A few minutes later, Severus was tucking Draco into bed and stroking his cheek while murmuring assurances he’d be okay. Draco was mumbling incoherently, but settled at the sound of his lover’s voice. One down, one to go. Severus returned to the library. Harry was sitting on a window sill with an arm curved around his middle. Kasper sat beside him with his head resting on Harry’s lap. Severus stood where he knew Harry could see his reflection in the window.“Is he…?” Harry asked.“Draco’s going to be fine, Harry. Nothing more than a knot on his head and a bruise on his back. I gave him a potion for both. He’ll sleep until mid-day tomorrow. What happened?” Severus asked.Severus wisely stayed back. He witnessed a tear rolling down Harry’s cheek.“We were arguing. I got mad and my magic lashed out at him. He…hit his head on the wall. The bruise is from the mantle. I didn’t mean to. I just…I’m not ready,” Harry murmured, his voice breaking.Severus wanted nothing more than to cross the distance and gather his lover in his arms. And he would have. Except he could feel Harry’s magic swirling in the air. It was keeping him back away from him.“Not ready for what, Harry?” Severus asked.Another tear rolled down Harry’s cheek as he turned his head around to look at Severus. Harry’s face was full of agony; an expression Severus wished to never see again.“There’s a reason…you found me sleeping in the armchair this morning. I had a visitor…last night that told me…told me something that…*sniff*…upset me,” Harry explained.“And you’re not ready to tell us what it is?” Severus guessed.Harry gave him a weak nod. Severus held his hands out to show he meant the brunette no harm.“It’s okay. It’s okay, Harry. Tell us in your own time, okay?” Severus told him.Severus surprised himself by not taking a step backwards when Harry suddenly flew to his feet. Kasper remained close to him, even leaning on the wizard. Harry lowered his head to his chin while shaking it back and forth.“I…I can’t stay here. Not…not tonight. Not after what I did,” Harry mumbled.Severus flinched. Harry was pulling away from them…away from him. Draco was going to be mad at himself when he found out. A small bit of relief enveloped him when Harry reminded him he had a standing invitation at Malfoy Manor. He had already owled ahead to Lucius that he was coming.“Take the time you need, Harry. But Harry?”Harry lifted his teary gaze. Severus had a serious look on his face.“Come back to us when you’re ready.”Harry sniffled again while nodding. It broke Severus’ heart when Harry stepped back when he silently offered a hug. He flashed Severus a sad, barely-there smile before flooing out with Kasper. Lucius was there to meet him with a questioning look in his gaze. Not wanting to see the similar characteristics to his injured lover, Harry kept his gaze turned away.“Have you eaten yet?” Lucius asked. The question threw him. He had been expecting a question as to why he was there. Harry shook his head in response to the inquiry.“Good. The house elves are finishing dinner as we speak. I dislike dining alone. So wash your hands and join me downstairs.”Harry could do nothing, but nod in silent agreement. He knew Severus would be upset if he retired for the night without eating. He had already gotten away with missing breakfast and eating a small lunch. After washing up and trudging downstairs, Harry had a quiet dinner with the Malfoy patriarch. It wasn’t until he was lying on top of the covers in Draco’s old room that the floodgates opened. Harry rolled over, buried his face into the pillow, and wept. Kasper’s ears drooped. He whined as he climbed up onto the bed and curled up to his human. Harry rolled back over, throwing his arms around the canine and crying into his fur. The canine just lay there, trying to offer what comfort he could to his human.Harry trembled. His stomach hurt and all he could see in his mind’s eye was the image of Draco collapsing to the ground. The crack of his lover’s head smacking against the wall sounded through his ears. Soon Harry cried himself to sleep. A moment later, Lucius crept into the room. He walked over to the side of the bed carrying a blanket which he used to drape over the two of them.He had just gotten off a floo call with Severus. All he had been able to tell him was something happened with Draco and Harry was gravely upset over it. He would wait until morning to speak with the young brunette. He knew ways of making someone talk without pushing them too hard. A lesson his son might possibly need to learn. After ensuring his guest was comfortable, Lucius left to review papers at his desk in the library. He was reviewing all the paperwork for the next trial day for the day after tomorrow. Lucius flipped through his pages while drinking a deep, strong cup of coffee. He was making a few small notes when he reached out for his mug. He was surprised when he came up empty. Lucius looked down to find the mug empty.“Damn it,” he murmured, placing the cup back down.“…never thought I’d hear you curse,” a quiet voice emitted from the shadows.Lucius’s hand flew to his heart as Harry emerged from the shadows.“Potter, don’t do that,” Lucius growled, trying to calm his rapidly beating heart. He noted that as the young man stepped closer, he looked like a total wreck. His eyes were tinged a bright pink from the crying, his face wet from the tears. Lucius noticed the young wizard had a folded piece of paper in hand, but he chose to wait for Harry to bring it up.“Can you not rest, Potter? It’s only been a couple of hours,” Lucius hinted.Harry walked closer and held the paper out to him. Lucius took it but left it folded while Harry opened his mouth to speak.“Someone flooed in last night. They gave me…some news I…I…umm didn’t like. I’ve been thinking about it all today. Draco confronted me about it tonight,” Harry explained.Lucius leaned back in his chair, giving the youth a calm, collected look.“And you weren’t ready to talk about it?” Lucius guessed.Harry shook his head.“I…I guess I was still coming to terms with it. That,” Harry nodded his head to the parchment, “is one of the questions you should ask Ginny in court.”Curiosity won out with the older wizard. He unfolded the paper, his eyes scanning the paper. His gaze flew up to Harry’s sunken face.“I…can see why this would be upsetting,” Lucius commented.Harry shook his head again.“It’s not what you think,” Harry murmured.“Then explain it to me. Start with the beginning and go slow.”Maybe it was because the wizard wasn’t one of his lovers. Maybe it was the guilt of having hurt this man’s only child. Whatever it was, Harry found himself spilling out everything; Neville and Dean visiting, the shocking revelation, the trip through the forest, and even the incident with Draco. Harry was shocked when, after telling the man what he did to his son, that same man threw his head back and laughed. What is Draco going to do to me when I tell him his father’s gone around the bend, Harry thought.Harry pouted, waiting for the wizard to calm down. Lucius laughed for a few seconds before sobering up.“Do you see that bay window over there?” Lucius asked.Harry glanced over at where Lucius was pointing to. When he looked back at the other man, he nodded his head.“In all the years I was married to my wife, she blasted me through that window over 38 times,” Lucius explained.Harry let out a silent gasp. Lucius waved it off.“It was nothing. There is a large bush underneath the window. It magically enlarges to catch me every time. It’s like falling on a large mattress, if you will. About half of those times were in the months she was pregnant. I had to be careful what I said and did.”Harry smiled. He could only imagine the sight that must have been. Harry jumped when a heavy hand landed on his shoulder. He turned his gaze up to his lover’s father.“Do not feel bad about this. My son made a mistake in pushing you when he knew your magic is still unstable. Go home tomorrow. Apologize, if you feel you must.”“Thank you,” he mumbled.Lucius smirked. “You’re most welcome, Potter.”Harry was still experiencing an emotional high and couldn’t find it in him to try to sleep. He had left Kasper in the room because he had known his magic wouldn’t go haywire. At least not right now. Instead he picked up a random book and plopped down in an armchair not far from Malfoy’s desk. When Harry cracked the book open, he found that it was on the subject of wizarding law; more specifically, on the court process in the wizarding world.Harry was somewhat familiar with the way muggles court was run. All charges were listed and the prosecution presented its case with witnesses, evidence, etc. The Defense was allowed to question the witnesses and argue against evidence while providing their own. Wizarding law, back in the early years, had started out the same way. However, one explosive case had forced a change. Spells had been cast, testimonies interrupted, and evidence destroyed. This is what led to trading off prosecution and defense giving each their sides. This meant that prosecution could call any witnesses back up after defense has called them up and vice versa.Lucius glanced over at him at one point and wasn’t surprised to find the young man asleep. He sure as Hell wasn’t picking him up and taking him back to his bed. However, he did have the decency to stand and throw a blanket over him. As he returned to his desk, Lucius thought over the other questions he would be asking Ginny Weasley the day after tomorrow.End of Chapter NineteenDon’t Poke the Pacing Lion
